Tonight we're chatting with the co-creators of a new graphic novel project called THE MATRON, co-authors David Bowles and Drew Edwards and artist Monica Gallagher. They all have amazing resumes and I have spoken many times with David, who besides being an Eisner-nominated comic creator and author of some forty books, presently serves as the president of the Texas Institute of Letters and co-editor-in-chief of Chispa Comics. And I speak regularly with Drew, who is a Best of Austin award-winner, two-time Ringo nominee creator of the comic Halloween Man. But it is my great pleasure to for the first time speak to Monica Gallagher, a Ringo Award winner for Assassin Roommate and has co-created numerous series including The Black Ghost and Anti-Stepbrother, not to mention a number of indy series. For fans of PEARL, HACK/SLASH, and YELLOWJACKETS—The Matron, Volume 1: A Wind that Kills is a 52-page horror graphic novel from award-winning creators David Bowles and Drew Edwards. Check out THE MATRON at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ipicomic/the-matron-slasher-meets-slavic-myth-in-central-texas.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/castle-of-horror-podcast--4268760/support.

In this episode we interview Dr. Kris Manjapra. Kris Manjapra works at the intersection of transnational history and the critical study of race and colonialism.  He is the author of five books, in this episode we discuss his comparative study of global emancipation processes and the implications for reparations movement today: Black Ghost of Empire: The Long Death of Slavery and the Failure of Emancipation.   In addition to his scholarly work, he is the founder of a site-based nonprofit, Black History in Action, dedicated to the restoration and reactivation of a Black cultural heritage center in Cambridge, MA.  Kris also co-organizes a free online community certificate course, entitled Black Futures Matter, serving people's assemblies across the US and the Caribbean. Our conversation with Manjapra focuses on Black Ghosts of Empire and on unsettling our mystified and highly inaccurate dominant views of emancipation processes globally. Dr. Manjapra walks us through the origin and history of the legal apparatus of emancipation and takes a materialist approach to analyzing whose interests were served through these processes to demonstrate how these historical shifts preserved and upheld the interests of slave owners. He also demonstrates the various ways that emancipation processes were designed to place Black people into a state of indebtedness and delay their freedom from bondage. This is an excellent discussion for thinking through the ways that the white supremacist capitalist state and the property owning classes  seek to respond to crises in ways that preserve existing hierarchies and power relations. We also discuss many of the vibrant Black abolitionist movements that demanded, organized, and struggled for alternative futures. Taking a look at some of the earliest Pan Africanist and Black Feminist thinkers, cultural workers, and organizers Manjapra stitches together a rich tapestry of movement lineage that carries into the current ongoing struggles for reparations for slavery and its long afterlives. We can't quit vampires. Just when you think you've seen every mythological iteration, a creator comes along with a new take on the bloodsuckers. Blood Oath by Alex Segura, Rob Hart, and Joe Eisma arrived before our eyeballs at the perfect moment. The vicious vampire twist that plops our favorite fanged beasts amongst the gangs puppeteering the Prohibition era was the most delightful way for Lisa to extend her current undead obsession, ignited mostly by her recent Twilight re-read. She will not accept any comments on that sparkly infatuation at this time, although we do get into it during this week's opening banter. The ComiXology original Blood Oath joyfully adds a new element to the seemingly tired monster mash concept. We chat with Alex Segura about what he hoped to accomplish with his take on the creatures. We also discuss why our culture, and most other cultures, can't shake these particular monsters either. Also, how do you like your damnation? With or without God involved? Of course, Segura is an incredibly busy writer these days, and 2022 proved to be a stupendously successful year for him as well. In addition to Blood Oath, we talk about his vigilante/journalism thriller The Black Ghost and his award-winning new novel, Secret Identity. Look no further if your hustle needs some inspiration. Blood Oath and The Black Ghost are available from ComiXology, and The Black Ghost's first two trade paperbacks are available from Dark Horse Comics. Sindri Hlíðar Jónsson, co-owner and head guide at Fish Partner, walks us through what it's like to fish over there. We hear about which species are the most targeted and what you need to prepare for. Find out why there are no public waters and fisheries in Iceland - how all are privately owned and by whom. We also hear about the new lodge they're working on that has five different fisheries within a 20 mins drive. Tim Cammissa told us about his awesome trip to Iceland in a recent episode. Today, we confirm with Sindri why. Check out Sindri's Top 4 Tips for Fly Fishing Iceland. Hit that play button and you just might have your next destination! Fly Fishing Iceland Show Notes with Sindri 03:30 - Sindri and I connected at the Fly Fishing Show in Denver 04:45 - Sindri grew up in the suburb town of Reykjavic 06:00 - Fish Partner started in 2013 and Sindri started guiding there right then 06:50 - The 3 main species in Iceland are trout, Atlantic salmon, and arctic char 07:30 - Early April and into May is the start of the season to fish for sea-run browns. Salmon runs start coming in late June, July, and August. Then the fall, they get another round of the sea-run browns. The season closes on October 20th 09:20 - The best sea-run browns are located on the Southeast Coast of Iceland called, Skaftafell 10:30 - Fish Partner is opening a new lodge in June which will be called, Battle Hill Lodge, located right on the banks of one of the smaller tributaries, Thvera 12:30 - Hottest temperature month is July. Their big issue is the wind because it gets really windy up there so casting can be a challenge 13:44 - Sindri recommends bringing both single and double-handed rods - 7 and 8 wt, 12 and 13 foot 15:45 - Fish Partner have about 25 guides working for them 17:30 - Prime time for Atlantic salmon in Iceland is in July 19:20 - There is no such thing as public water in Iceland - all of the waters there are leased to outfitters, angling clubs, or whoever the highest bidder is 23:10 - Sea trout numbers have gone way up and Atlantic salmon in the last 2 years have been disappointing. 15 years ago, sea-run trout was not considered a sport fish in Iceland - they were "trash fish" or food so they make about 5 to 10 runs to the ocean and live up to 25 years 25:00 - They usually just catch and release. But if people want to have fish for the table, they can take you to the high mountain lakes and they're packed filled with arctic char - taking a few for sushi or the grill is fine for the fishery 29:00 - They use flies like Mickey Finn and Black Ghost. For nymphs, Pheasant Tail works great 30:30 - Start by emailing Fish Partner and tell them what you want to do and what you want to catch - they will set up a trip and the itinerary for you. Choose whatever day you want to start and finish, if it's available on their calendar, they will make it happen 32:15 - Sindri states that they have more fish in Iceland than in Norway and Scotland but their salmon are smaller. Norway has big salmons 33:15 - Iceland has some of the biggest sea trout. The only place you could compare it to is Argentina 38:40 - The two biggest hatches in Iceland are caddis and midges 39:45 - Reykjavic alone has about 12 fly shops. All Fish Partner lodges have small fly shops 45:00 - Most of the waters in Iceland have waterfalls because it's mountainous over there - there are about 10,000 waterfalls there 50:00 - Iceland is only about 5 hours flight from the US 52:30 - Sindri says do not eat or buy farmed Atlantic salmon and he tells us why. North Atlantic Salmon Fund is an organization dedicated to saving the North Atlantic Salmon from extinction. 54:25 - Super Tinsel and Hitch Tube are some of Sindri's go-to flies Fly Fishing Iceland Conclusion with Sindri So there you go. If you want to catch some of the largest sea-run trout.. If you want to catch arctic char and Atlantic salmon.. If you want to have the water all by yourself without competition.. If you want to enjoy nature and get away from people.. If you want just a 5-hour flight and get to your destination.. Visit Iceland! Don't forget to bring your thickest jacket!
