In this thought-provoking episode of The Light Inside, we explore the complexities of neophobia—an unhealthy fear of the unknown—and how it can paralyze us from embracing new experiences and opportunities for growth.  Change-leading catalyst Jamie Meyer joins the conversation to unravel the psychological mechanisms that underpin this irrational fear and how it can hinder our ability to form new routines and perspectives. Throughout our conversation, we examined the processes necessary to embrace new possibilities and open our minds to the richness of our diverse experiences.  Jamie, and I discussed the subconscious bias of the comfort zone, as coined by business theorist Alasdair White, and how it can limit personal growth by keeping us rooted in familiarity. The episode touched on mental heuristics like the status quo bias, which drives our preference for consistency and an adverse fear of risk, and how these subconscious patterns can become liabilities to our well-being. Jamie Meyer shared her insights on the importance of recognizing and engaging with healthy fear and risk to move beyond reluctance towards new experiences. She emphasized the need to navigate the distress often felt during uncertainty and how her work helps clients through this process. Tune in to gain insights on transforming unhealthy fear and embracing more diverse pathways to change. Timestamps: [00:01:35] Comfort zone, healthy psychological safety, and personal growth. Spending several years getting a degree or working your way up a certain company, doesn't mean you can't eventually pivot away from that industry to try something new that you might enjoy more. A lot of times, people get caught up in what Tony calls a “sunk cost fallacy” and they think that because they invested time or money into something, that going a different direction would be a waste, but that isn't true. You can't get the time or money back, so don't be afraid to take the knowledge and lessons you learned, and switch gears to something that makes you happy and better fits your lifestyle. Today's guest did just that and went from being a medical doctor to working in the car industry. Dr. Jamie Meyer has served on the SEMA Board of Directors since 2018, and has taken the role as President of the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) trade show and media company. Jamie has a long history in motorsports and racing, and will lead the PRI team in increasing engagement and support for the industry through enhanced programs and services for the motorsports community. He recently left a very successful 15-year career at General Motors, where he served as the Advanced Performance Parts program manager, the performance marketing manager, as well as several marketing and advertising roles. In this episode of the 365 Driven Podcast, Dr. Jamie Meyers shares his journey of pivoting from the medical industry to cars, and his advice for people that are scared of transitioning from one industry to another. Jamie urges leaders to not be afraid to make mistakes but to make sure to learn from them. Jamie and Tony discuss recent changes in the car industry and offer advice to those looking to get involved with this industry. Tune in for more. Facinating interview of how he has gotten the best of Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Dak Prescott and many others to excell well into their 40's.  Here is the full episode transcribed. Hey, everybody's Mark Pattison. I'm back again with another great episode of Finding Your Summit, all about people overcoming excuse me, all about people overcoming adversity and making their way through it and finding their summit. So, anyways, I haven't done this a little bit during the summer here, but we're back on we're back on track and before we get into today's wonderful guests, we're gonna talk about my website really quickly. WWW dot mark pattison, NFL DOT COM. There's a number of things going on there. Number One, the movie searching for the summit, which one and Emmy for best picture, covering my Everest journey by the NFL Um, is now on that website. You can check it out by following the different lengths that are there. That's number one. Number two, I've got over two D sixty podcasts of finding your summit with amazing people at the guy out today doing incredible things which will inspire all. And number three, I continue to have my hands knee deep in my flat. Philanthropy causes with with higher ground. That's the organization that helps um process all these things and and drive money, Um and awareness to people who really need. A lot of these people are military folks who have had PTSD and have had adaptive issues with their legs and norms and things like that. So really about empowerment. My daughter also has epilepsy. So we created this found this campaign called the millions Everest, and we have now raised well over a hundre ground towards these great causes. So, Um, if you want to donate over there, go ahead. Of all the money goes directly to higher ground. Okay, on that note, let's jump into today's great guests. His name is Tom. How's Tom? How are you doing? Very good, happy Wednesday. Happy Wednesday to you. I haven't done this in the spell in about a month and so my got a tongue twisted just a little bit and I normally don't do that, but it's all good. Um. So I I I found you, like a lot of times I do. You know, at some certain point the Dealta of knowing people and then tapping into other people. You hear about somebody and I was so fascinated because they've called you this guru, you know, quote unquote. I don't know how you exactly Um phrase that up, but I kind of want to give away what we're gonna talk about a little bit later and then to kind of go back and see how the building blocks of how you actually got to the place that you were in today. Um Tom, is a guy that I saw, I think, on twitter, and you've been, uh, somewhat infamous, that's the right word, for helping guys like Tom Brady, Dak Prescott many other NFL stars drew brees over the years with their throwing motion and helping them get better. And the interesting thing about all this is that you're really a baseball guy and you're a guy that that went to USC went on, you were drafted by the braves, played over the Red Sox and home my home, uh team, I guess, so to speak, the mariners. I grew up in Seattle, Washington, want to the University of Washington. So you you, I'm sure you know that area well up there. But but let's go back to kind of the route at the beginning of formulating because so much of what you do is just not about how to throw a ball. To me, all mechanics are roughly the same when throwing anything, whether it's, you know, a baseball, a football, a basketball. It's all that fall through shoulders, score a target and off you go. But there's so much more that you do that you contribute to this which is between the years um of making that happen. So let's let's start kind of back at USC and your love for baseball and how did that kind of evolve to where you are today. Mark, that's a great leading and you've done your homework. It's it's awesome to talk to some of it. It has any kind of clue that what I've been doing for the last fifty years. But we'll go back to sc it actually started sitting into that with my mom and dad. There Um not quantifying or qualifying sports as a way to make a living. They only cared about getting an education. So everything I did in sports I had to get an a to be able to play. So that's set the stage. But when I got to USC UM, my first bullpen was next to a guy named Tom Sieber. I had a really good high school career and my my first bullpen at USC with coach Rod Dato, who was the coach of the century, watching over my shoulder and severer shoulder. I was looking at this guy. He was a man child at eighteen, nineteen years old and I'm flipping up my little left hand at eighty mile an hour fastball and he's running it up there, you know, in a bullpen. And coach Dato was the first one to make me aware that there were options outside of a pure talent. He said, well, what do you think? A young Tom seewer Tommy House, and I said, rod if you need me to do what he's doing, you got to row left hander. And this is where I've been fortunate my whole life when it comes to someone mentoring me at the right time at a prosp room. He said, I don't need you to be Tom Seeber, I need to be the best Tommy House you can be. Throw your curveball, throw your change up field your position, hold downers close, you'll get innings, you'll win a lot of games with the TROJANS and you'll play some pro bowl too. You know again. But let me let me jump in really quickly, because you're telling me this whole story and the thing that that I'm recollecting again going back to Seattle, watching the Seattle Mariners, especially when they had griffey and Rodriguez and those guys up there. He had a picture named Jamie Moyer, and you sound just like him right, you left. He had could throw probably top s eighty five miles per hour. And you're you're aware that I had jamie for six years when I was a pitching coach with the Texas Rangers. Well, there you go. And and he ended up having a longer career. He Pitched Hill. It was forty eight. Nolan Ryan only pitched untilie was seven. But it was the same information and Instruction delivered to a particularly different human being. But the process created a better chance for an outcome, a positive outcome, with both of them. Okay, so let's talk about let's talk about that process, because it's you, you, I think you you used yourself in Tom Sieber, who I think played for the dodgers way back when, Um, and and then you're talking about Nolan Ryan and Jamie Moyer. Right, Nolan Ryan was just like a Pissy, you know, burning fire out of his nose, throwing Hunter Mile Prior fastballs well into, like you said, his late forties. And then you have Jamie Meyer, probably very similar to you, a lefty that would just right pots coming in and strike people out left and right right. Well, you talk about individuals, whether they're coaches or athletes reaching a semit or getting really good, with mastery at what they do. It's it's really finding order in chaos with with some kind of a process. We cannot what I learned early on, we cannot control outcome, but we can control process and by Hook or by Crook, throughout my playing career and my coaching career I got lucky in learning how to manage the process that I was going through and not getting so caught up in outcomes. Okay, so so, so. So. Go back there, though. I'm so fascinating this because if you can, if you can appreciate, you know, going through major college football with the process, going into the NFL, with the process, I was kind of like Tom Brady, another guy that you mentioned. I was drafted in the seventh round. He was drafted in the sixth round. Had to fight for everything. Obviously Tom Brady's a legend legendary player. I wasn't, but you know, still we all try to achieve our ceiling of what we were able to do and then going on and and climbing all these crazy mountains around the world. That took a process and didn't know what the Hell I was doing when I got into it and then, you know, coming back and helping to revive sports illustrated there was a certain process and so I'm trying to understand from you, like I really want to peel back the layer here and not just glaze over like Oh, there's a process. Well, what does that mean like to you in your mind? What is that process? What's that combined of well, it's it's unique to each individual Um, like there's one set of rules, but there's a million interpretations and it's a function of his movement efficiencies, his functional strength, his mal emotional capacity and his nutrition in sleep to recover. Those are the four basic pillars of health and performance in any sports occupation. And again, I played, but I continue to get education. I went on and got a couple of Bestelor's science, a cup of Masters and a Ph d, an avid learner for and just listen to you talk. You may have you may not have realized it was formal Um, but you're an avid learner or you would not have been able to do the climbing you did on the seven summits of the highest mountain ranges in the world. And it's the individual Um and he doesn't have to be a leader. He can. He can actually follow someone that identifies for himself or herself the path of least resistance, the process that will return the most give it, give the best return for the least akhams raiser, let the the best return for the least amount of thinking or processing. So what I got lucky at is, as a player I was always in front of somebody that gave me a how to with my talent and how a process to make it. They were Clyde King's of the world where he realized I didn't throw hard, but he saw that my e r a when I was in the minor leagues, one time through the lineup my Ra was less than two. By the third time through the lineup it was astronomical. So he was a a statistics guy before anThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5724695/advertisement

Jamie Meyer, a successful female entrepreneur in a male-dominated industry, and founder of NineCarat.com, shares her perspective on reaching the pinnacle of your success. Stop waiting for the right time and for things to fall into place because that time never comes. If you want success, you need to chase it down. You need to take messy action and opportunities that come your way even when you feel you are not ready for them. That is the only way to create the best version of yourself and create the life and business of your dreams. Attack your limiting beliefs head-on so you can shut them down. Learn how to use the exhilaration that accompanies fear and anxiety to your advantage to reach your full potential. Jamie Meyer created her best life when she founded NineCarat.com. A company built on the principles of helping others reach their full potential so they can live out their dreams. Success coaching is not a one-size-fits-all concept; Jamie understands that each individual is unique in their position and perspective, and everyone requires a unique approach. NineCarat works by outlining people's patterns of behavior because no matter what region of the world you are from or how you were raised, human behavior has set patterns. When you can assess routines and habits, you can understand reactions and consequences. That is the starting point you use to change your life choices and move ahead. Jamie's challenge when working with clients is pushing them out of their comfort zone. Most people, even those that are considered successful, are only living their life at a 60% effort level. They reach a certain level and become content. Most of the population behaves like this because it's what they were taught to expect life to be like.  Jamies knows differently. As Einstein said, most people only utilize 10% of their brainpower. Jamie knows people can push themselves to go further. Life will always be forward moving, so if you want to grow and succeed, the only option you have is to take those chances. You need to be willing to risk what you currently have, typically 60%  of your potential, for more. Imagine living your life at a 70 or 80% success level and how that would look for you.Life is all about perspective and choice. There is always room for improvement and growth. It's a personal decision to accept life as it is or break out of the old paradigms and limiting belief systems. One example Jamie shares is that the grass is always greener where you water it. In life, people make decisions based on who they are today. Get married at 21, and you choose a partner and lifestyle that fits who you are at 21. Most people are not the same when they are 42. Ideals, desires, wants, all those things shift. This is where accepting life as it comes or being uncomfortable and wanting more than your 60% of happiness comes into play. We have choices. Life moves along the same pattern and trajectory for everyone. If you understand that, you take the lessons you learned and apply them in your new circumstance. There are no repeated mistakes. People have the opportunity to level up and conquer new challenges. Jamie helps her clients challenge their limiting beliefs. She helps them realize what they want out of life and what holds them back. She doesn't claim to have the answers, but she has the questions to lead you to them. Her methods include a lot of introspection and mindset shifting. Jamie's favorite part of client work is when they reach that aha moment, and a switch flips. Fresh eyes see opportunity in situations where before they saw none. When people are unhappy in their life, and they walk through the doors at NineCarat, they want to take a risk and make a change. They're ready to jump headfirst into their new life and leave everything behind. Many clients are looking to escape the reality they've created for themselves. Support the show

This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Jamie Meyer. Jamie is the founder of Nine Carat Business Consulting, a firm that has been named one of the Top Australian consulting firms and Jamie has been named one of the Top Australian business strategists. She has a unique focus on clarity and focus into where businesses breakdown and how to prevent or overcome these issues. As Jamie says, her mission is to reinvigorate businesses, their foundation, future, and approach to progress. Nine Carat strives to mine the gold of everyone and everything giving the ability to close the gap between where a business is and where it wants to be. I'm excited for her to share how she does it. https://www.ninecarat.net/ When Jamie was younger, she was the kid that wanted to change the world. As she got older, she got more serious about life. She started working full time at a very early age doing everything from hauling frozen fish to working night shift in the container business. Business came naturally to her. She ultimately ended up running a business in Brisbane, AU that was integrating companies and she was really frustrated because of all the lost potential she could see through the process and the fact that her hands were tied by leadership in doing anything about it. So, she went out and created 9 Carat out of her frustration and to gain control. The company has evolved greatly, and she now works with major companies helping them step into new areas in their business. Why did you choose the name 9-Carat for your business? She moved into a house next to a little old couple. The husband was a graphic designer and helped her design the look and logo of 9-Carat. There were 9 areas she wanted to focus on in companies. People would tell her that she would sparkle, and clients would tell her she was a diamond. And diamonds are forged under intense pressure – which is sort of the story of her life. Take us through your process of how you do what you do and get the results you get for your clients… Companies are unique as human beings and have individuality. There are no one-size fits all path to success for companies. Clarity and expectation are key. You must have clarity of where you are at and where you want to go and why. And the set the expectations needed to get there. How does a business or business owner get “clarity?” Where you have synergy, you have clarity. If things feel hard, you don't have synergy or clarity. The way you get clarity is specific to each business, but every business must be clear on their purpose and vision – and those are the basis for getting clarity. What is the difference between purpose and vision? Purpose is your motivation. It is the ground on which you are taking steps to doing an anything. It aligns with your vision. Vision is where your imagination comes in and you can see what that physically manifests into in a market. Your vision is driven by your motivation. You must be clear on both and must be synergistic with each other and coincide. Purpose is the foundation and vision is the framework. Where should a business owner start when it comes to purpose and vision? Purpose – your vision will come together as you figure out your purpose and motivation. Talk about expectations and how they relate to clarity. How does expectation play a role in achieving the vision? There are 2 sides to expectation. The first is the expectation that currently exists in business models – most of the time, they are actually limiting and don't give much room for leeway. The goal is to re-write the expectations to facilitate substance from people. If you have clarity, everyone will be working toward the vision – how can you expand their expectation or give them the room to contribute their genius in a bigger way and expand it themselves? Let their “unsolicited genius” standout! Where do see companies have the most problems or breakdown the most? It really is around clarity and expectation. Jamie dives in on this at the 17 min mark and it is best to just listen. A focus just on rules/bureaucracy creates a company full of robots and processing what it is front of them. Companies put in more and more rules when the lack clarity and expectation. What is success setting and understanding alchemy and bionomics to achieve it? Bionomics is relations in interactions between organisms and their environment. It takes into account every action a business has and how it interacts with its market. Most companies do a lot of things right but understanding why they work so well in one area and then applying that to another area that isn't doing so well is the key. Alchemy is the work that Jamie and the client does together to make things shine. It's turning where they are into a new version of success or converting something a much better version of what it is thought to be. At the 27 min mark, we talk about the book, The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo and how that has impacted us. What is the most important thing you do for your business every day as an entrepreneur? Be grateful every day for it. Every day, show it a little bit of love. What are some of the best lessons you've learned as an entrepreneur that have helped you the most? The only person standing in your way is yourself. We don't realize the conditioned idea of limitation that we have in our lives. Always do something that you've never done – be bold. Best advice for an entrepreneur starting out? Put blinders on to the rest of the world. Put blinders on to the market and competition. Create a business that you are motivated by. Create a vision that speaks to you. What have you learned about working internationally? You must have patience. Do not get bogged down trying to understand everything – you won't. You will learn as you go. And what you think you need to know many times is irrelevant.   Best Quote: Where you have synergy, you have clarity. If things feel hard, you don't have synergy or clarity.   Jamie's Misfit 3: Always remember the point right when you are about to give up is where the magic happens – don't give up. Always be your own hero. Always be the novice, but don't assume everyone already knows what you know.    Show Sponsors: Five Minute Journal www.MisfitEntrepreneur.com/Journal   The David vs. Goliath Podcast Search "David vs. Goliath Podcast" where you listen for podcasts
