Episode 49 was an absolute blast to record. I had the honor of sitting down with THS alumnus Tony Anzaldi and talking life, and career choices. Tony is another member of the unique fraternity of THS alumni who have now come back to Tallmadge City Schools to serve as teachers. Tony is in his 5th year of teaching, and it is his 4th year at Tallmadge Elementary. He teaches science and math in a 4th grade classroom. It is in that classroom where Tony truly shines. He is an amazing teacher and mentor to the children not only in the classroom, but in the school as well. So many parts of our conversation resonated with me and I could write on and on about those parts. I definitely want to highlight the part of our conversation that centered on having a growth mindset. Years ago my then superintendent Dr. Jeff Ferguson put a book called Mindset in my mailbox. It was written by a psychologist named Carol Dweck. Little did I know that his simple gesture of gifting a book to me would radically change my teaching and my philosophy of teaching. Not only that, but it my personal mindset shifted so dramatically that I will never be the same. You can only imagine the excitement I felt with Tony started talking about the concept of a growth mindset and how he spends countless hours teaching his little ones how to embrace this and become better from it. As our conversation continued you can hear the excitement and passion in Tony's voice. It is clear that he is called to this profession and that he loves serving our community and our kids. Four individuals Mr. Anzaldi highlights as having an impact in his life are Mr. Knutty, Mr. Slivka, Mrs. Conley, and Mrs. Knutty. Four extraordinary human beings whose lives are centered on helping others. After hearing about the influence they have played in his life you will come to realize that no gesture, small or large, is ever wasted and that it can have an eternal impact on an individual. Mr. Anzaldi is a proud husband to Ally. They have been married for 3 years. They have a retriever named Dolly who keeps them busy and active. Honestly, I cannot wait for you to hear this episode so stop reading, grab some Crimson Cup coffee, and listen to this amazing young mans story. You will be impressed, moved, and just as excited as I am to hear and share his story. Please share this episode with your friends and family. Tallmadge is so blessed to have this young man, and so many other incredible educators, in our school system changing lives. And, as always, please remember that everyone has a story worth being told, even you. Are you getting the most out of your PPC campaigns? Want to know what you should focus on in 2022? Jeff Ferguson, honored as one of PPC Hero's "Top 25 Most Influential PPC Experts" for three years in a row, joins Loren Baker to talk about the biggest PPC trends that can help improve your strategy. In the coming year, businesses will no longer be able to rely on third-party tracking, which has become an industry standard over the years, requiring them to rely on first-party data. For those of you looking for guidance on how to manage this massive change, this podcast is for you. In 2022, things are going to be very different. It's one thing where I really think people are not fully grasping how dramatically different this is going to be when Google pulls the plug. –Jeff Ferguson, 15:14 We've been telling people already to do whatever they can on that first-party side, like start yesterday. –Jeff Ferguson, 20:09 That's really the beauty of what we do, it changes from day to day. –Loren Baker, 09:24 [00:00] - A little about Jeff. [11:40] - What interesting changes happened in PPC this year and where is PPC going in 2022. [17:50] - What is first-party data? How do you switch from using third-party data to first-party data? [23:13] - Why are classic media planning styles returning? [24:19] - How programmatic advertising gets obtrusive. [25:10] - What can you do instead of programmatic advertising? [28:59] - An example of disconnected retargeting. [32:01] - Where you can use your first-party data for retargeting. [32:45] - What PPC opportunities are there instead of Google, Microsoft & Facebook? [39:53] - Does PPC really help with branding? [49:26] - Do you need to be on every platform? [56:09] - Jeff's room, his stand-up bass, and becoming a UCLA professor. Resources Mentioned: PPC Trends 2022 - https://www.searchenginejournal.com/ppc-trends-2022/ The problem is we get all these new tools that are fun and they're effective and they have a place for them. We think they're doing the work but we really have to go back to old-school marketing. –Jeff Ferguson, 48:41 I'm really trying to teach people not to become digital marketers but to become marketers that use digital. –Jeff Ferguson, 63:07 I don't think that a PPC campaign started chicken sandwich wars. I think there are people on social media talking about how long the line is, and that there are pickles, and it just exploded - and now in Santa Clarita, there are three Popeyes being built. –Loren Baker, 47:51 For more content like this, subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/searchenginejournal Looking to keep up with what's current and effective in digital marketing today? Jeff Ferguson, Partner at Amplitude Digital https://amplitudeagency.com/ @countxero My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Jeff Ferguson. Jeff is a Partner and the Head of the Production Team at Amplitude Digital. He is an industry veteran with over 25 years of experience in digital marketing. In that time, he's worked with large organizations like Belkin, CBS, eHarmony, Manchester United, Paychex, Sony and many others. He is a regular presenter at conferences such as Ad:tech, AllFacebook Expo, Conversion Conference, eMetrics, and SMX. He is also a professor at UCLA where he teaches classes in Advanced Digital Marketing and Search Engine Optimization. Earlier this year, Jeff wrote an article for Search Engine Journal titled, “Do We Have the Math to Truly Decode Google's Algorithms?” The article quickly gained interest on Twitter and throughout the SEO community. I'm going to spend a lot of our conversation discussing some of the points made in the article. Prior to joining Amplitude, Jeff owned his own agency Fang Marketing. I'm going to ask him about the experience of getting acquired during a global pandemic. Jeff is also a lot of fun to have a beer with. Bonus points to Jeff for bringing an imperial coffee stout from Gigantic Brewing Company with an unforgettable picture of Sam Jackson on the front of it (picture on the next page). Join us for a conversation that scrutinizes the tools SEOs use, the studies we rely on for information and learn a little bit about Gentlemen Scientists. It's been about six weeks since Jeff published a Search Engine Journal article (https://www.searchenginejournal.com/math-decode-google-algorithms/374391/) questioning the methods, conclusions, and qualifications of many SEO studies that try to decode Google's algorithms. Jeff Ferguson, partner at Amplitude Digital, joins Jim and Dave to talk about the statistical science, or lack thereof, behind some of what many might consider foundational studies in the SEO industry.

In this episode, Jeff Ferguson of Amplitude Digital and Jennifer Hood, Data Analytics Consultant join Matt to discuss the accuracy of studies of Google's search engine ranking algorithm. Many SEO companies claim to have tested multiple aspects of the ranking algorithm and then use this data to sell their products. But how much have they tested, what have they tested, and is their testing even statistically valid to make a substantial claim? Those are the questions that Jeff Ferguson asked and answered in his recent Search Engine Journal article, "Do We Have the Math To Truly Decode Google?"
In this episode I sit down with Mr. Jeff Ferguson, the superintendent of Tallmadge City Schools. I have know Mr. Ferguson for a long time. Jeff Ferguson joins the show to talk about how brands are stepping up to reengineer their digital involvement to rise and meet the needs of our current climate. Jeff has been on the scene since the early days of digital as a writer for the trades, speaker, and leader in agency, publishing, and the client-side. Jeff and Kevin discuss the role of entrepreneurs to problem-solve and give hope to the industry, adding the notion that we may even take some of these practices with us after the pandemic is over. Then, Jeff and Kevin give examples of the good, bad, and ugly of media responses from different companies about the pandemic, and even slip into a fun role-playing segment of the show! Takeaways: While a few comic book stores and record shops remain closed in all ways, Jeff noticed that there were some that adopted creative strategies to both move inventory and stay connected with their fan base. Some of the new advertising practices we develop in the pandemic will stick with us in the future and become new ways to engage with customers in a positive way (a fancy term for making money). Jeff predicts a shift where both smaller and bigger businesses will realize that including a digital portion of their brand or services will get them that direct-to-consumer sales channel. Also, traditional media channels are seeing the way digital can rewrite, recut, and reimagine their advertising instead of shutting it all down, and they may follow suit in this way as well. Things are going to be different, but it’s not going to be that bad, despite what some advertising reports may tell you. Indulgent posts from CEO’s and grandstanding with a sales message both don’t help. What does help is honest and transparent communication and true care for the brands’ customers and their community. Quotes: “There will be enduring things that we have learned that will stick with us.” Entrepreneurialism has always been about solving problems.” “You have to be able to transform and do whatever you need to do.” Mentioned in This Episode: Jeff Ferguson LinkedIn Amplitude Digital Fang Marketing @ThatKevinSmith Ming Chen @grantmorrision Geeky Quote from Matt Damon Mars Movie “The COVID-19 Shuffle: How Businesses Embraced Digital Marketing to Survive the Pandemic” “The COV-Ad Pandemic, And How to Avoid It” “Rag and Bone’s ‘Why We’re Lowering Our Prices’ Letter is the Biggest Load of Horsesh*t” Marathon Gas “Creating Civility and Opportunity with Rob Norman” Interactive Advertising Bureau

Jeff Ferguson with Jason Barnard at Search Marketing Summit 2019 Jeff Ferguson talks with Jason Barnard about how Google is using machine learning (SEO and SEA). Jeff Ferguson gets us started with a repeat of his groovy Elvis impersonation. Then gets serious and gives some amazing insights into what machine learning Google is using that affects SEO. Obviously Rankbrain, but also crawling and extracting unstructured and structured data for the web. I love the idea Jeff throws out – that Schema.org is the only thing we are doing ONLY for the search engines. We debate whether Schema.org is needed for understanding or is it really mostly for improving confidence. We move onto how many legs does a horse have (pretty funny) and how fast does an ostrich run. Jeff has a lovely line on cocky human beings. Onto ML in Google Ads, specifically DSA. Volume of data is incredibly important, and is a factor we (I) often overlook. Lastly Smart Display – Maybe machine learning will push some ugly ads because they work better… in which case we still need the human touch!

Jeff Ferguson with Jason Barnard at Search Marketing Summit 2019 Jeff Ferguson talks with Jason Barnard about AI and ML in Google. Jeff Ferguson gets us started with a nice Elvis impersonation. And we agree he has an admirable business card. On a more serious topic, AI is science fiction, Machine Learning is what we mean. And will we ever allow AI to get to the stage where it can truly emulate a human. In Digital Marketing, ML has allowed us to move to become more marketers that tech. What we are doing in marketing, but just using modern tools. And that means we should be thinking in terms of strategy rather than focussing on tactics. There is no point in trying to hack the algorithm. Understanding, deliverabilty and credibility is a solid approach (I led Jef very not subtly into agreeing with me there). Then onto “ML started in the 50s… why is it blossoming now?”. And with that our job is now to effectively feed the machines with information. We are moving towards a knowledge graph in real time. And things are moving forwards at an accelerating rate. Are we perhaps moving too fast? And as it moves forwards we are now at the stage where we can no longer even look into the algorithms and data since the format is not understandable to us. Then I get overwhelmed with something as simple as Captcha. GAFA use mechanical Turks. R2D2 gets a mention. Jeff tells me that I do indeed have more computing power in my phone than NASA took to the moon.

Jef tells me that I do indeed have more computing power in my phone than NASA took to the moon.
