No, pregnant women should not practice intermittent fasting. If you're throwing up and you can't eat, then in some sense, you are fasting. However, your number one priority should be nutrition. Find food that you don't throw up. There are other tools that you can magnify once you are pregnant. For instance, you will pass down your microbiome to your child. So, you need to understand what supports a healthy microbiome. Pregnancy is an excellent time for fermented foods. Also, keep in mind what you are putting on your skin; make sure all your products are very clean. Overall, there are tons to unpack for the pregnant woman to have a healthy pregnancy, and fasting is not the tool you want to be leaning into. How Often Should You Check Your Ketone Levels? Ben doesn't check his ketone levels because he has been doing keto since 2013. So, he knows when he is in ketosis vs. when he's not in ketosis. When you're starting keto, it can be a valuable tool to know whether or not you are genuinely in ketosis. Many people will test their urine because it is the cheapest option; however, urine testing is not the best. When your cells use ketones, they will not spill out in your urine. While on the other hand, breath meters are hit or miss. Ben recommends Biosense if you are interested in testing your ketones through breath. https://mybiosense.com/ All in all, a blood ketone test will give you glucose and ketones levels. If you're 0.5 or higher, then you are in ketosis. Test your ketones for a month or two. Eventually, you won't need to test anymore.    Keto vs. Carnivore: Which Diet Is Best For You?    Carnivore is technically keto because when you're doing carnivore, you are in ketosis. Both diets are good options, but Ben says to try keto first. Keto is low carb, but it's not zero carbs like a carnivore diet. If you go from 150 grams of carbs to zero, that's going to feel challenging. However, going from keto to carnivore isn't as challenging for you. Many people have naturally started carnivore diets because they plateaued on keto. Carnivore can be a great natural transition to try something new and change things up for your body. We don't need motivation; instead, we need momentum. All in all, carnivore can be an accessible version of keto if you want something simple to do. Intermittent Fasting: Is It Safe For Your Children?  Fasting isn't a fad; fasting is a primal way our body approaches food. Children live in a human body and have the same primal need to go through periods without food. Sadly, we beat that sense out of them. We tell kids to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Then, they aren't allowed to eat after dinner. Dr. Mindy says to watch the natural rhythms of your children's hunger levels. Do they wake up happy, or do they wake up crazy hungry? If they're happy, you can easily go an hour or two before feeding them. Make sure you are learning their natural rhythms. We need to tap into our children's natural time-restricted eating. Overall, don't push food on them when they may not be hungry.  Should You Do Keto If You Don't Have A Gallbladder? Gallbladder removal surgery is one of the top surgeries in the United States. Many people think that the gallbladder is what produces bile to break down fat and detoxify. In reality, the gallbladder is more of a storage house for the bile. The liver produces bile. Bile is a beautiful green substance that helps you break down fat and detoxify. If you don't have a gallbladder and you start to do keto, the liver needs to make up for the absence of the gallbladder. If your liver can't keep up with the fat, that's where issues will occur. You may experience diarrhea and stomach issues. So, you must go low and slow and eat small and frequent meals. Eventually, your liver will adapt so you can do regular keto and intermittent fasting.  Check out Dr. Mindy's Website: https://drmindypelz.com Follow Dr. Mindy Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drmindypelz Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr.mindypelz/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/drmindypelz YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DrMindyPelz/featured Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/drmindypelz/ Register for my upcoming 90 day detox program: http://www.ketokampdetox.com (1 spot left!) / / E P I S O D E   S P ON S O R S  Paleo Valley beef sticks, apple cider vinegar complex, organ meat complex & more. She has been active in the impact investing sector since 2006, and is founder of ArthaPlatform.com, an online impact investment platform that is designed to tackle the economics of due diligence around high impact, small scale SMEs/SGBs.  She has also been a wanna-be techie since 1997. She completed her PhD in technology policy and development and has been thinking about how to intertwine the two ever since. She is passionate about bringing good people together, and proving that investment in good business(es) is one of the keys to best serving the under-served on this planet.  Audrey has a background in management consulting from PricewaterhouseCoopers, and her entrepreneurial experience includes several years spent in business development, marketing and sales at an NSF-funded software start-up called Wireless Grids Corporation.  Artha Impact The Artha Impact team has been working since 2007 as the impact investing arm of Rianta Capital, which is a dedicated advisory to the Singh Family Trust. Through this initiative, they have been running a series of programs designed to invest, catalyze and convene around the promise of supporting meaningful business interventions for impact in India. Today Artha Impact holds a robust portfolio of direct early/growth stage investments and a small handful of impact funds in the country.  Sectors of focus include - but have not been limited to - agriculture, healthcare and livelihoods. Key Points: There is an incredible network of like minded family offices Artha Network platform  help coordinate discovery and create more visibility. “The information about who's doing what and where should not be left to chance, because the opportunity costs are just too high in the event that things go wrong, and things don't happen the right way.” Partnership with Menterra, one of the oldest social enterprise incubator in India. Impact Measurement - we encourage folks that we work with to pick 2 or 3 things that are really tangible and possible to measure Taxonomies - we are trying to keep it simple Partnerships play a crucial role in due diligence - We had 40% of investors reported in the GIIN survey, express willingness to utilize other investor's due diligence documentation, and that's a sea change.  Every player has a lot to contribute, technology is amplifying what each and every one of us can do. “Federation and King of the Hill strategies, domination strategies aren't going to work today. What is the importance of biofeedback for longevity and improved physical performance? How can we accurately measure whether we are in ketosis? What is intermittent fasting? What impact does an 18:6 diet really have on our bodies? What is autophagy? How does fasting affect muscle mass? What are exogenous ketones? What does it mean to be metabolically flexible? With all of the conflicting information surrounding ketosis, fasting, the impact of exogenous ketones, and nutrition as a whole, we wanted to get an expert on the SuperAge podcast to give us some clarity around the topic. Jim Howard, the President and CEO of Readout Health, has helped to create an innovative biofeedback tool, Biosense, used to measure your ketone levels throughout the day to help with goals for longevity, weight management, or peak performance. He, along with this team at Readout Health, wants to help us regain control of our health through proper nutrition and lower the rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and more. What you will learn in this episode:- Why using a biofeedback device can promote a better understanding of our health and be used to promote  longevity- How to know whether you're in ketosis- The misconceptions around ketosis, health, and diet- What intermittent fasting does for the body- What autophagy is and how it impacts aging- What Jim's wellness non-negotiable are“A good way to look at ketosis, I don't mean the keto diet I'm talking about ketosis, is that it's the other side of the metabolic switch, that's where the damage is undone. We focus on the undoing of the damage that one has done to themselves.” “If longevity and healthspan are curious and part of your future plans, I encourage it to be, knowing what your actual body is doing as you enter these zones is critical, as opposed to just guessing.” “I was born in 1967 and in this one generation, in 1967 10% of us were obese. 54 years later it's now at 40%. In one decade it will be 49%.”Try Readout Health's Biosense ketone monitor with code SUPERAGE20 on https://mybiosense.com. Listen to the SuperAge podcast wherever you get your pods. Connect with Jim:LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jim-howard-2b33124/Biosense Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/mybiosense/?hl=enWebsite: https://mybiosense.com

#015-What is the best way to detect ketosis?Ketones and ketosis are everywhere in the news. What are ketone bodies? Why are they good for us? How do we measure them?  Our guest today is Jim Howard, the CEO of biomarker-based startup Readout Health. Their product  Biosense is the first clinical-grade, handheld device that measures nutritional ketosis for chronic disease and longevity/wellness focused consumers. He is a digital health executive with an MBA from University of Missouri-Saint Louis.Take away points:Three Ketone bodies are produced as a by‐product of fat metabolism. When the liver metabolizes free fatty acids,  they are transformed into acetyl‐CoA, a molecule used in the production of energy. Depending on the glucose level, acetyl‐CoA can be diverted to  produce acetoacetate, the first of three ketone bodies.  Acetoacetate can further produce β‐hydroxybutyrate and acetone, by enzymatic degradation or spontaneous decarboxylation respectively. All three ketone bodies circulate in the bloodstream. Acetone, because of its small size, diffuses into the lung and appears in the exhaled breath. The devices we will be discussing detect levels of acetone from this process.Deep lung measurement.Biosense Breath Ketone Monitor -Use the code Lufkin20 for a $20 discount at https://mybiosense.com/*** CONNECT WITH ROBERT LUFKIN MD ON SOCIAL MEDIA ***Web: https://robertlufkinmd.com/ Twitter:https://twitter.com/robertlufkinmd*** GOT A SUGGESTION FOR A SHOW? ***Contact us at: https://robertlufkinmd.com/contact*** SPONSORSHIPS & BRANDS *** We do work with sponsors and brands. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Kristina Hess. Kristina is a premier health coach and licensed dietitian/nutritionist who works with clients to support them in making lifestyle changes that produce real and lasting results. Kristina has a master's degree in clinical nutrition and Integrative Health from MUIH - Maryland University for Integrative Health and several certifications in areas ranging from Mindful Eating, Heartmath,to Ericksonian Hypnosis to Sport Nutrition. Kristina received her health coach certification from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Kristina's integrative and functional approach is an arm within the Functional Medicine model of the IFM. Functional Medicine views us all as being different; genetically and biochemically unique. A functional approach is deeply science based and views everything that happens within us as a connected network or web of relationships. Kristina's private practice in Connecticut is called Thrive Results Coaching. In this episode, Kristina explains what health complications come from insulin resistance and the Standard American Diet. If you're a sugar burner, Kristina describes what you need to start doing right away in order to turn your health around. One of the first things you need to do is start testing critical health markers. Kristina reveals which health markers are essential and which brands she recommends to her clients. Tune in as we jump into epigenetics, mental health, and Kristina's upcoming Keto Symposium. Parents don't want to take food away from their kids like macaroni, pizza, and chicken nuggets. Kids will start metabolically flexible and can get away with eating anything. However, it won't last forever. If you still want to buy chips, then Kristina will suggest buying chips with cleaner ingredients. Instead of buying Ben & Jerry's ice cream, try a pint of Rebel ice cream. The most common contributing factors leading to insulin resistance are lifestyle issues like nutrition. If we ate real food, then we wouldn't develop insulin resistance in the first place. Processed food is speeding our way to insulin resistance. [06:10] Are You A Sugar Burner? Here's What You Need To Do Now There are three things we can do when we are trying to get well: Time Restriction: how often you're eating and when you are eating. It's critical to stop eating before bedtime. Caloric Restriction: if you're going to eat garbage, then eat less of it. Dietary Restriction: take something out of your diet that is not healthy for you. It will be a vast improvement from the Standard American Diet. If you want results, try all three of these steps. 76% of the world population does not have the genetic adaptation for LCT. You should consider cutting out dairy; cow dairy is inflammatory for most humans. If you have skin issues, headaches, and extra flatulence, then dairy could be the problem. [11:50] The Importance of Testing For Glucose Values and Ketones Values If you are extremely insulin resistant, there is hope if you're willing to put in the work. There are two different companies that Kristina recommends for her clients: Keto Mojo: https://keto-mojo.com/ Biosense: https://mybiosense.com/ Keto Mojo allows you to test ketones and blood sugar. Plus, they provide your GKI. People should test every single day, especially in the beginning. That way, you can learn which foods are taking you out of ketosis. Plus, by testing, you can learn how many carbohydrates that you can tolerate. Some people can stay in ketosis at 50 total carbs or 75 total carbs. Everyone has their own carb tolerance. [18:50] What Is Nutrigenomics? It Might Be The Future of How You Eat The Human Genome Project was a project that spanned many years. Human DNA was mapped out to correlate to different nutrients and hormones. APOE4 is an old gene, and it conferred a lot of health benefits. One of the benefits was fertility in cold weather. Plus, APOE4 correlates to neuronal health in the brain and also to cholesterol production. Unfortunately, today's diet doesn't correlate to that old gene. Our diet causes a lot of inflammation. If you have APOE4, you shouldn't drink at all because you are 23% more likely to develop Alzheimer's. If you want to test your genes, Kristina recommends the Nutrition Genome: https://nutritiongenome.com/. If you have done a 23andMe, then you can use that data as well.   [26:10] The Role That Epigenetics Plays With Our Genes and Lifestyle How you live is what impacts your epigenetics. We are in control of our health. How much sleep do you get each night? How are you moving your body? Genetics is the blueprint. Genes are the potential, and they can give us a roadmap on how to live our lives. Epigenetics is the optimal lifestyle that will help you lead a healthier and longer life. There's a gene that correlates to ketones: PPARalpha. If you have this gene, eating extra fat will be challenging. [30:40] The Health Numbers You Absolutely Need To Know Ask for your A1C. That way, you know if you are headed for diabetes. C-reactive protein is a cardiac risk marker. You want it to be under a 1. Also, test for homocysteine, RBC magnesium, and B12. Lastly, get a full thyroid panel. [33:25] How Changing Your Lifestyle Can Impact Your Mental Health Sugar takes us on a roller coaster ride emotionally. There is a strong food-mood connection. Cold therapy can be a huge benefit for improving mood. People don't need antidepressants and antianxiety medicine if they have the proper tools. It takes 72 hours to get off sugar. Once that's over, you have all this freedom and clarity. Then, you'll have the energy to work out. Plus, you will sleep better. [40:15] All About The Keto Symposium and Why You Should Sign Up Today Learn about The Keto Symposium: https://www.ketosymposium.com/ Kristina loves to educate people; that's why she started the Keto Symposium. People are finally starting to understand the health benefits of a low-carb life. At the Keto Symposium, you can hear from all sorts of educators and experts. Melanie is a SAG-AFTRA actress, author of What When Wine: Lose Weight and Feel Great with Paleo-Style Meals, Intermittent Fasting, and Wine, host of the top iTunes podcasts The Melanie Avalon Biohacking Podcast, and The Intermittent Fasting Podcast with Gin Stephens, and she has appeared on this podcast twice before. Melanie is certified as a wine specialist by the WSET and as a holistic nutritionist by the AFPA. She is also a member of MENSA. Melanie developed the top iTunes app, “Food Sense Guide", to help those with food sensitivities, and she currently runs three rapidly growing Facebook groups. A few months ago, Melanie and I had a long conversation and decided to do two episodes at the same time. The first was Episode 143, which aired in April. In that episode, we focused on biohacking, for which Melanie is well-known. For today's episode, we pivot and focus on blood sugar dysregulation. Melanie and I will bring you up to speed with everything you need to know about managing your blood sugar, tapping into the intrinsic hormonal regulation in your body, and ensuring that your blood sugar is well supported. Stay tuned for more!  IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: How Melanie first became interested in the science of dieting. Melanie talks about metabolic flexibility, the amount of energy stored in our body fat, and the purpose of insulin. Why your bio-individuality needs to be taken into account when figuring out the best diet. What a continuous glucose monitor is, what it does, and the benefits of using it. Biohackers often ask: How long do I need to fast before I am in autophagy?  The answers come back fast and furious and it appears that nobody can agree – 16 hours?  24 hours? 72 hours?  It turns out that the answer is frustratingly: “it depends”…it depends on you, your metabolic flexibility and more…the Biosense device is here to help individuals answer this burning question for themselves. In this week's episode Nathalie talks to Jim Howard from Readout Health about the Biosense Breath Ketone Monitoring device – a revolutionary method of measuring ketones more precisely without spilling a single drop of blood!  We talk about the ketones, fasting and a new feature on the Biosense App that will help users to tap into their body's innate mechanisms of repair and renewal – cellular autophagy - by honing in on their individual response.   Meet This Week's Guest Jim Howard is a 27-year medtech executive focused on value creation with novel approaches to patient care. Jim came to Readout as CEO from his EIR position at venture capital firm, BioGenerator, an initial investor in Readout. He is a co-founder and initial CEO of Washington University spinout SentiAR, the first AR platform for interventional procedures, currently in clinical trials. Jim led a team of 50 as VP of Sales in CareFusion's respiratory business unit through the acquisition by Becton Dickinson in 2016. He is a board director at POC medical device company, MagBiosense, and is an active mentor to new CEO's in the St. Louis healthcare ecosystem. Jim is passionate about behavioral changes in chronic diseases, putting the healthcare in the hands of patients. He has an MBA from University of Missouri-St.Louis and remains active in collaborations with Washington University researchers.   Episode Sponsor: drinkHRW: This episode is sponsored by drinkHRW.com  manufacturers of the best molecular hydrogen supplements on the market.   For the past 4 years I have been using molecular hydrogen tablets every single day for dozens of reasons including mitigation of oxidative stress, to support my mitochondria and metabolic health, to help me recover from my workouts.  I am such a fan that I have every one of my clients using drinkHRW tablets as a foundation supplement in their stacks whether their goals are healthy aging or increased performance (or both).
