By the end of 1970 Three Dog Night was in the middle of their most prolific and successful period of their career. The group would land 21 Billboard Top 40 hits between 1969 and 1975 with three of these taking the top slot. The group was formed by three vocalists in 1967 - Chuck Negron, Cory Wells, and Danny Hutton. The other members of the band for this album are Mike Allsup on guitar, Joe Schermie on bass, Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards, and Floyd Sneed on drums. All of the instrumentalists in the band also provide backing vocals on at least one of the songs from the album.Naturally is the fifth album from the band and the second released in 1970. Three singles from the album entered the Billboard top 20, with "Joy to the World" topping the charts. As with contemporaries like the Beach Boys and Crosby, Stills, and Nash, you get an abundance of vocal harmonies with Three Dog Night. Given the origins with three vocalists, perhaps this is not surprising.Three Dog Night takes its name from the Australian Outback, and how the Aborigines would keep warm at night by sleeping with a dingo - dogs native to the continent. A very cold evening would be known as a three-dog night. While the group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000, they have not yet been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Much of their work was composed by others, and this has been used as an excuse for their lack of recognition.Three Dog Night continues to produce music today, though Danny Hutton is the only original member still with the group. Wayne takes us through this album for today's podcast. One Man BandThe first single released from the album went to number 19 on the Billboard charts. The lyrics describe a man who wants to be the only one for his lover - her one man band. There are great close harmonies and work on the Hammond organ in this one.Joy to the WorldThe big hit from the album went to number 1 on the Billboard charts and remained there for six weeks. It was not expected to be a hit, but was instead expected to just be a "filler" song for the album with nonsensical but catchy lyrics. Singer-songwriter, guitarist, and actor Hoyt Axton wrote the song. Chuck Negron is the lead singer on this hit.LiarRuss Ballard of Argent wrote this song, and released it as Argent's first single off their self-titled album. While that version did not chart, the Three Dog Night rendition went to number 7 on the Billboard charts, benefitting from its release after their number 1 hit with "Joy to the World." The haunting lyrics describe a relationship in trouble.I Can Hear You CallingThis song leads off the album and appears as the B-side to "Joy to the World," but was never released as a single itself. The funky grooves feature heavy use of the Hammond organ and a big drum beat. The lyrics reflect a person who keeps getting called on the phone by a lover he has left behind. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “H.R. Pufnstuf”This odd children's show from Sid and Marty Krofft left the airwaves in October 1970. STAFF PICKS:Fire and Rain by James TaylorRob starts off the staff picks with this soft rock hit. Taylor wrote the song after the suicide of a friend. It was the second single from Taylor's second album, "Sweet Baby James." It peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.It Don't Matter to Me by BreadBruce brings us another soft hit. Bread was a soft rock group formed and fronted by David Gates, along with Jimmy Griffin and Rob Royer. Gates, a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, ran in the same circles as Leon Russell in Tulsa bar bands before moving to California. The song reflects an openness in the singer's relationship, wanting only the best for his love.Knock Three Times by Dawn Lynch features a group which would later be known as Tony Orlando and Dawn. Orlando was working as an executive at April-Blackwood Music, and released the song without listing his name to protect his position from accusations of a conflict of interest. The song went to number 1. The lyrics reflect a secret romance between a man and his neighbor from the floor below.Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go by Bettye LaVetteWayne's staff pick is a bit of a James Brown song with a female voice. Bettye LaVette came out of Detroit but was signed by Atlantic Records rather than their competitors in Detroit, Motown Records. LaVette is a long time singer of blues, soul, and R&B starting in the early 60's and continuing today. This song is about letting loose and having a good time living in the moment. A sixth-generation master baker, competitor and jury member for international baking competitions, business owner, consultant, professor, and most recently, author—Jimmy Griffin has just about done it all in his baking career. He got his start working from a young age in his 125-year-old family bakery set in Dublin, Ireland. Now, he's finding ways to pass his knowledge and craft down to younger generations of bakers. BAKED in Science host Mark Floerke invites Jimmy to share his story in this episode. Starting back in Ireland during the late 1700s with his journeyman ancestor, and the start of the family bakery in the late 1800s, Jimmy shares what life as a baker looked like back then and the memories that have been passed down over the decades. His own career officially started at 17, as he studied baking at a university and helped run the family business, eventually starting his own cake shop on the side. From there, Jimmy would go on to win a silver medal in the Coupe du Monde Chocolatine and was a frequent international jury member of the Coupe Du Monde (Bakery World Cup). In 2016 he was president of the jury. The Art of Lamination Later in his career, Jimmy went back to school to get a Master's degree in New Product Development and Culinary Innovation so he could continue instructing honors degree bakery students. He devoted that time to immersing himself in the art and science of lamination. Those notes would eventually become his first self-published, widely popular book. The Art of Lamination is the ultimate instruction and reference book for croissant (https://bakerpedia.com/processes/croissant/) and other laminated pastry (https://bakerpedia.com/processes/dough-lamination/). It covers all the processes and skills from start to finish, helping the reader firmly grasp the concept and troubleshoot issues. You can find Jimmy's book on Amazon. Through this conversation, Jimmy and Mark cover: - Growing up in a bakery - International baking competitions - Writing a book - The most commonly asked croissant question - Adding layers to croissant dough - Sourdough croissants What are your top croissant or baking questions? Ask our experts in the Baking Industry Professionals Facebook group! https://www.facebook.com/groups/bakingindustryprofessionals

R&SRNR_124 – "COMPLETE HIT SINGLES HISTORY OF BREAD & DAVID GATES ET. AL." This episode salutes a band which was synonymous with the soft rock sound that was all over your radio in the 1970s. The group’s primary lead vocalist composed all their hit singles, except one, and also achieved significant solo success. That band was Bread, and that singer-songwriter is David Gates. We’ll sample all of Bread’s and David Gates’ hit singles – plus a whole lot more. David Gates was a constant in Bread – as various other talented musicians and singer-songwriters rotated in and out of the band – in particular, Jimmy Griffin, Robb Royer, and Larry Knechtel – whom we’ll also spotlight in this podcast. Various Bread members also played a part in hits by Glenn Yarbrough, Simon & Garfunkel, and the Carpenters, among many others. We’ll sample some of those songs, too. Our resident “Rare & Scratchy Rock ‘N Roll” Rockologist, Ken Deutsch, will be along with the David Gates/Yogi Bear connection – plus lots of fun factoids. And Radio Dave will have more of the greatest rock and roll stories on record. Hear it all here.
Welcome to the OT machine El Monstero. Like their shows, this conversation is fun, unique and something not to be missed...
Robb Royer, fulfilling a deathbed wish from Jimmy Griffin, completed in 2010 a project begun by the two in 1973 after Bread's first breakup. A mix of rock opera and radio "Theater of the Mind," the project is a dramatic narration completed with sound effects and music which tells the story of Cosmo, an electronics whiz who is the sole human employee of Savage motors. In his spare time he has built Robetta, a robot who later becomes nearly human in appearance and abilities. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I am lucky to have experienced the music of Eddie Van Halen from an early age. My guests were moved by Eddie to learn their instruments and to perform at a high level. In an age of earbuds and headphones, the communal aspect of music seems less prevalent than ever. The used record stores of Birmingham beg to differ. Listen in as we investigate their growing popularity and the place music has in today’s society. This episode features Marian McKay of Charlemagne Records, Gary Bourgeois and Jimmy Griffin of Renaissance Records, and Eric and Eugene Bates of Bates Brothers Recording Studios. The music in this episode was made and written by Samford student Kerry Joiner. Find more about our program at www.oralhistory.samford.com. You can find us on social media on Twitter (@su_stori), Instagram (@samford_stori), Facebook, and our blog, the Bull Pup (samfordhistory.com).
Conversing with Gary Bourgeois and Jimmy Griffin is like listening to a comedy team of long standing. They speak in a kind of code, in which one always knows exactly what the other is about to say, which story is about to be told of their four-decade friendship. For most of that time, they've also had a business relationship, first at the legendary Charlemagne Records at Five Points South, and for the past 14 years at Renaissance Records, also at Five Points. Standing in the well-packed confines of Renaissance on a recent Friday afternoon — surrounded by vinyl, CDs, DVDs and books — Bourgeois and Griffin spool out an idiosyncratically comprehensive catalogue of their musical knowledge, stories of their interactions with customers over the years, and their thoughts on how it is that one little corner of Birmingham, Alabama, supports two gloriously independent music stores. Enjoy the latest WeldCast.

What was the experience of going into a Quiktrip while it was being looted just moments before being engulfed in flames? How about witnessing a man being shot and pulling him to safety when one's job is simply to capture the images of these occurrences. David Carson shares these stories and more in the second part of his conversation with Ken Calcaterra. What I admire the most about David Carson is his integrity along with his amazing creative eye. Giving a fair and balanced view of the world is not easy but David has accomplished this in both Afghanastan, Iraq and Fergurson along with photographing more than his fair share of murders in the city of St. Louis. The work hasn't gone unnoticed as he is a Pulitzer Prize winner as part of the photographic team of the St. Louis Post Dispatch for their coverage of Ferguson. The photographs he makes are not all doom and gloom. He covers the world as he see's it and there is a lot of good that he's seen and he's reported as a journalist, utilizing photos to support the story.
