Welcome to another fascinating episode of Adam's Archive! I'm your host, Austin Adams, and today we're diving deep into some of the most compelling and lesser-known stories of political intrigue and historical conspiracies.
Politics was in the blood of Clarksburg native John W. Davis. He was born not only to a Congressman, but to one who participated in the Wheeling Convention that birthed West Virginia. So, it was no surprise when Davis became a political star, working for U.S. Presidents and pleading cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. But that was only the beginning. He would get the Democratic nomination for president in 1924, putting him within grasp of the White House. Despite his loss, he remained a stalwart advisor to the men who would take the office and take his place in history.
In 1924, a divided Democratic Party met in Madison Square Garden to pick their presidential nominee. It took 103 ballots to arrive at John W. Davis, a talented but obscure Wall Street lawyer who had served in the Wilson administration. With the Roaring Twenties roaring, he didn't have a prayer of upsetting Calvin Coolidge. Thirty years later, he returns to the public eye to work on the legal cases that became Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka. On the side favoring segregating public schools. To help us understand this dynamic, we are honored to have Prof. Leland Ware of the University of Delaware with us.
Five cases, eleven advocates, and a quarter century of work; Brown v Board of Education of Topeka addressed this question: does racial segregation in schools violate the 14th amendment? Walking us through the long journey to overturn Plessy v Ferguson are Chief Judge Roger Gregory and Dr. Yohuru Williams. They tell us how the case got to court, what Thurgood Marshall and John W. Davis argued, and how America does and does not live up to the promise of this monumental decision.

The myth of the American cowboy features a lone man who makes his fortune on the open plains. He doesn't need the government, and he doesn't need some big corporation telling him what to do. But that myth is far from the reality in the west. Many cowboys worked for large corporate cattle operations. And when those operations were in danger, he relied on the government for help. The Johnson County War started when the Homestead Act of 1862 brought new people to central Wyoming. The area just west of the Big Horn Mountains had been free-range grassland where anyone could let their cattle run free. The large cattle operations loved this setup because it saved them an immense amount of money and infrastructure. The new homesteads threatened their empires because they divided up the land and restricted their access. So the Wyoming Stock Growers Association banded together to send a message: get off our land. They send a murder squad to Johnson County, Wyoming to scare the people of Buffalo with a series of brutal murders. What followed was one of the darkest chapters in Wyoming history. Where big businesses murdered with impunity, aided by the governor and sitting president. Davis Discussion Questions: What role did the Homestead Act play in stirring up trouble in central Wyoming? Is there a character in the story that you identify with? Is there any part of you that sympathizes with the WSGA? How does this story challenge your concept of the American cowboy? What role does the government have in protecting an industry? How do you feel about the government's failure to punish the invaders?

In the southeastern corner of 1901 Wyoming, cattle ranchers were furious that sheep were destroying valuable range land. When Willie Nickell, the son of a local sheep rancher was found murdered near his home, legendary gunman Tom Horn was one of the first men suspected of the lowdown crime. My guest is John W. Davis - retired Wyoming attorney, historian and author, who joins me to share stories about the arrest, trial and execution of one of the Old West's most fascinating and dangerous characters. In addition he discusses some might-have-been-also-rans: Silver Dick Bland, Champ Clark, Charles Fairbanks, William Randolph Hearst, Leonard Wood, William Gibbs McAdoo, Hiram Johnson and Irvine Lenroot.
In this episode, Thom dives into one of the most forgotten presidential losers of all time, John W. Davis, 1924 Democratic dark horse nominee.
One of my favorite things to learn about when researching episodes is how people marketed inventions that had never been on the market before. In The Story Behind Post-its, we talked about how 3M's style of marketing was to show what the product could do, rather than just showing the product. In The Story Behind Dr Pepper, John W. Davis made it a point to tell six people every day his version of the beverage's origin story. And, probably in the running for most audacious marketing of an invention covered by The Story Behind is today's topic, when its inventors rented a kangaroo to help demonstrate the fun jumping capabilities of the product.
