It's our longest episode in this series, 'Onipa'a: Resiliency Pushing Through Pain, but it is a MUST listen for those struggling in addiction and for those watching a loved one struggle. Kuhio, director of Teen/Adult Challenge on Big Island, comes to the table to share his many year struggle with drugs and alcohol. His vulnerability shows how destructive addiction can be, and how for many, he couldn't see a way out. Having made her television debut at just 9 years old, Alessandra Torresani is well-known for her roles in The Big Bang Theory, Caprica, Arrested Development and Malcolm in the Middle. In our interview with Alessandra, she gets candid about navigating adult life as an actress after she was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 at the age of 22. Despite being discouraged from talking about her mental health openly, Alessandra realized the importance of encouraging stigma-free conversations about mental health after she decided to share her story. She said, “I'm Alessandra Torresani, and I am bipolar. Who wants to talk?” It turns out, a lot of people did. This “talk” kick-started her advocacy to normalize talking about mental health issues, and she has since started her own podcast, called EmotionAL Support, where she discusses mental health with her guests. In this episode, we discuss: - Alexandra's childhood and her journey through misdiagnosis - The importance that documenting both highs and lows has on receiving an accurate diagnosis - Alessandra's work with NAMI, and the conference where she shared her bipolar diagnosis - How toxic positivity discourages people from talking about their struggles - Finding emotional support and comfort - The difference between mental health and mental illness - What we can do to help destigmatize the conversation around mental health According to Alessandra, it's vital that we start talking about mental health openly and encourage people to seek support and medical help when they need it. This is the only way to foster an environment where every single one of us can celebrate our individuality and uniqueness. Planet Fitness franchise was founded in 1992 by Marc and Michael Grondahl in Dover, New Hampshire. The Grondahls had acquired a struggling Gold's Gym franchise and closed it in 1993. They opened a new gym called Coastal Fitness and the Grondahls hired current CEO Chris Rondeau, who was still in college at the time, to run the gym's front desk. The Grondahls changed the gym's name to Planet Fitness in 1994. From the start, Planet Fitness was an inclusive, non-intimidating gym and in 1997, Planet Fitness officially unveiled its “Judgement Free Zone” philosophy. The “Judgement Free Zone” was started to help first-time gym users feel more comfortable starting their fitness journey. How is it that so many of us are more sure of what we want on a sandwich than in our sexual pleasure? On this episode of Busine$$ of the V, Dr. Alyssa Dweck and Rachel Braun Scherl take on this question along with their guest, Andrea Barrica. Her sexual education platform, the O.School, has carved out a niche by providing a safe place for people in search of science-based and accessible information. Over the past five years Andrea's team at O.School have compiled a treasure trove of data and insights about the predilections, fears and curiosity among a wide range of people who are sexually active – or would like to be! Part of the magic at O.School has been creating a resource that offers judgment-free information and language that is not only familiar but inclusive. As a result, many other sites have introduced similarly candid conversation around sexual health and wellness. Andrea finds that the video content, polling and data analysis her platform provides creates a sense of community and tremendous engagement among people who find comfort (and shed shame) around a variety of behaviors. The O.School's “Orgasm Order Form” is a great point of entry for many first-time website visitors. The result of an “aha” moment while waiting in line to place a sandwich order at Whole Foods, Andrea and her team have put together a series of questions to help us figure out what we do – or do not – appreciate sexually at least as well as we know whether we want mustard and pickles! Enjoy this frank, fun conversation about the important work Andrea is doing and how O.School is poised to partner with reproductive- and sexual health-related businesses and provide data and access to voices in this quickly evolving space. If you'd like to try out O.School's sexual pleasure order form, just click here. "The safest way to travel on chiropractic hi-ways" is a brief story in one of BJ's pamphlets. It is BJ's way of saying to create a judgement free zone in our practice. Kids on the spectrum should not be looked at as disabled but 'differently-abled'; a non-verbal child isn't non-verbal...they just don't speak OUR language. When you create a judgement free zone, kids on the spectrum feel ok to be themselves and this helps them reach their fullest potential. All kids feel welcomed no matter what their label. That is a happy safe place!
It seems like everywhere we turn these days, someone somewhere is passing judgment. And it really doesn't matter if it is about something serious or ridiculous: that judgment can be really painful. So we work overtime to create and keep a space that is "free of judgment, negativity and draining energy"? But is that really the most productive solution? I think surfers may know the answer! Neel Nanda is one of the hottest young stand-up comics in the game. Born and raised in Atlanta, he moved to LA early in his career and quickly started running his own show at the Westside Comedy Theater. Since then, he's performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Adam Devine's House Party, Hulu's Coming To The Stage, and Viceland's Flophouse. He's been releasing lots of comedy over quarantine, and has a lot of exciting projects cooking right now! Neel and I talked for a while (almost 90 minutes) about how he used quarantine to improve his piano skills, who we consider the GOAT comedians, and his experience doing comedy abroad in the UK and India. We close out with another Judgement Free Zone where we share some bit ideas we've been working on. If you're a fan of comedy, you will love this episode.
