We've all seen movies that contain a pivotal moment when characters are united in a cause or moved to action, all as the result of an impassioned speech from a leading character. The music builds as the words of this character flow forth, everyone's eyes are fixed on them until finally there is a collective cheer as they come together to tackle a challenge, or their spirits are reignited for a seemingly lost cause, or they plunge headfirst into battle or some other dangerous endeavor, with no other incentive than these persuasive words. But again, that's the movies. Can the words of a charismatic leader really carry that much weight in real life, and serve as their own incentive (separate of any personal or financial gain)? Joining me for this episode is Christian Zehnder with the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, whose study, “Just Words? Just Speeches?” On the Economic Value of Charismatic Leadership, has been selected for publication in the INFORMS journal Management Science. We'll explore just how much weight charisma carries in the real world, especially in a business setting when sometimes words are the only incentives available.

Join me in welcoming Ed Frey to the Well Mind community. The Well Mind Podcast is a space for meaningful conversations about a broad range of wellness related topics. In this episode, that topic is forgiveness. Forgiveness is an incredibly important practice that supports our relational, emotional, and spiritual health. So if that's the case, then why is it so hard for us to apply forgiveness after we've been hurt? And why do we struggle with persistent, harsh, and critical self-talk when we've messed up or fallen short. It often comes from a misunderstanding about what forgiveness is and what forgiveness isn't. Throughout this conversation Ed beautifully articulates the work of forgiveness and reconciliation in our relationship with God, with one another, and within ourselves. Ed is a pastor and professional counselor and brings tremendous depth to the conversation. I had a great time with Ed in this episode and found his words to be of tremendous comfort and filled with grace. He has such a compassionate heart and it's a joy to share this episode with you. The Rev. Kevin Skogen, senior pastor of Sandhills Presbyterian Church, and former associate pastor here at Faith Presbyterian Church, brought us the Word in our morning services, preaching “Just Words?” from 1 Corinthians 4:1-5.
Think back to an interaction you had with someone this last week that didn’t go as well as you’d hoped for. Maybe your kiddo left their legos on the hallway floor (again) and you lost your cool. You and your partner fought about money, your VA missed a date on an email campaign or a customer gave you some tough feedback.Whatever the conversation, there’s a high chance that you didn’t show up in those moments as the best version of yourself and there are things you could have done differently. You can’t change the past, but of course, you can learn from it.Connection with others is the richness to our lives and business, so today I’m giving you some tools to help you show up in these critical conversations with more intentionality so that you can nurture the relationships that matter most.I’ll introduce to you my framework for snapping out of the trance of the daily autopilot to engage in richer, more aligned experiences with others: my Intentional Communication Model.Additionally, I’ll share with you 4 power questions I use daily during my “Daily 10”. Each morning as I plan my day, I spend ten essential minutes focusing on the people I’ll engage with that day and how I can show up with purpose:Who needs me at my best today?Who am I interacting with today? And do I want to show up for these interactions? What might get in my way? What’s my “get back in the game” plan?Links Mentioned:If you’re ready to play a bigger game in 2020 and step into the spotlight, get my new guide - 5 Steps to Speaking on Stages to Grow your Authority & Audience // Ep 1: How to be More Authentic with your Communication// Ep: 2: How to Articulate Your Thoughts So They Make Sense To Others// Ep 9: The Art of Communication: More than Just Words// 5 Steps to Speaking on Stages - heathersager.com/5steps// Share your favorite nugget from this episode. In this special episode, we've asked two rock star ornithologists to answer a flock of listener questions about birds. Drew Lanham and Corina Newsome talk flying, feathers, eggs, poop and how we humans can help birds. Plus: we test their ears with the Mystery Sound and their obscure bird knowledge with a game called Real Birds or Just Words. Young people tend to say “LOL” and “like” a lot. Business jargon — such as “What’s the ask?”— is surfacing in boardrooms. Is the English language deteriorating before our ears? Linguist and author John McWhorter pushes back, saying these modern terms are examples of language evolving. Words’ meanings have always changed and those shifts will continue. “Language is like clouds,” says McWhorter. “If the clouds are in the same position they were in when we came in, something’s wrong.” In this conversation with Georgetown linguistics professor Deborah Tannen, he talks about his book Words on the Move and explains why we shouldn’t be frustrated when language changes. Show Notes Watch John McWhorter's talk, Adjusting to Modernity in American English, from the Aspen Ideas Festival. McWhorter is also featured in the Ideas Festival panel discussion, Just Words. BELIEVING IS SEEINGBrokenness Is Required.John 9:1-7, “As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. …Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. “Go,” he told him, “wash in the pool of Siloam” So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.”“ Everyone Matters to God. John 9: 8-12, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.” “How then were your eyes opened?” they demanded. Loving God Results in Sharing His Love. John 9:17,21,24,25, “Finally they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” The man replied, “He is a prophet.” “Give glory to God,” they said. “We know this man is a sinner.” He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”Identifying Doubts Is Normal. John 9:18, 19, “The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. “Is this your son?” they asked. Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?” Extreme Faith Requires Practice. John 9:26-28, “Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?” Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! Verifiable Miracles Are Expected John 9:30-33,“The man answered, ‘Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will. Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.’” Experiencing Grace Brings Salvation. John 9:35.36, “Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”QUESTION: If This Guy Showed up at RiverTown Church, What would we do with Him?ANSWER: Invite Him Into Three Environments that Help Him Grow!BELIEVEWeekend WorshipGod MattersMost People BECOME Home TeamsPeople Matter BECOMEMinistry MentoringYou MatterFind Faith Open To All Heart’s TreasureInspirationDone For You Reward AttendanceThe Fact is: We Are All Just Like Him. It's not every day you find watershed improvements in your web data that you can immediately attribute back to 1-3 simple action items you recently took on your website, but since we're constantly tweaking and testing, it just happened to us, and we feel the need to share it with you right away. Now, to many of you already familiar with the impact of Page Speed Load Time on SEO Rankings (which goes along with Optimization for Mobile Web), this won't come as a surprise. But, in our true style, we don't just believe all we read. We test, we analyze and we make data driven decisions. So, here's what we did to improve our website's engagement levels by 95% OVERNIGHT. 1. We eliminated some unneeded content on our long scroll homepage. Data showed us originally that the wide format, long scroll homepage was most effective to lower bounce rate, increase pages per visit and average session duration, all of which increase conversions, but when content isn't being looked at our clicked on (insights we gained from heatmapping data), it needs to go. Seriously. It needs to go because getting rid of it minimizes the amount of images and words that the webpage needs to load, and increases the Page Speed Load Time, which keeps search engines, and most importantly, VISITORS, happy and engaged. 2. We changed a hero image with words at the top of our homepage to JUST WORDS. We got rid of the image. The image wasn't relevant anymore to our business, and we didn't have a replacement, so we said "screw it, let's see if this works," - well it has, to the tune of a 95% better bounce rate. Now, we've also recommended moving background imagery based on data. Moving background imagery takes up far more bandwidth than even imagery, so this may seem counterintuitive based on other blog posts and reports, but remember, data has to be examined on a case-by-case basis. Every website is different, loads a different amount of content, main navigation items, images, and has a different target audience. However, regardless of vertical, we know that if your website is loading slowly or has a high bounce rate, implementing #2 on our list will help. 3. We removed a "preloader." A "preloader" is a fancy graphic that shows before the page loads. We are immediately going to all of our clients with preloaders and sending them this post. This is typically something easy to turn off. It's one more thing that the server doesn't have to load (making the page load faster), and as we all know, every split second that a user has to wait in order to see what they came for increases the chances that they'll bounce. Not only have the web engagement numbers been extremely more positive since these changes, but even more leads have come through our website forms, which is what we all need, right? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/paulhickey/support
A few weeks ago we broke out of the 2ser studios and headed down the road to our friends at 107 projects in Redfern, Sydney for the Just Words live event, sponsored by Audiocraft. We were overwhelmed when more than 100 of you turned up to sit in the dark and listen to us make a podcast as we put 18C on trial for ‘murdering’ free speech. In our very last episode of Just Words you will hear some familiar voices and some that are brand new to the series.Thank you if you came along and for those of you just catching up now, you are in for a treat! As the event was recorded live the sound is not as crisp as we usually like it, but we hope you feel like you are in the room.
To celebrate the success of Just Words, 2SER 107.3 has teamed up with Audiocraft to present a live listening event at 107 Projects this Thursday May 18thWe are excited to announce that we will be joined on the night by special live guest Jeremy Jones, Director of International & Community Affairs at the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council (AIJAC). Jones is no stranger to 18C – in fact, he has filed the most cases under the Racial Discrimination Act in Australia, using 18C to protect the Jewish community against anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial. Join the 2SER team as we record the final episode of Just Words live on stage, and put 18C on trial one last time, to determine if our race hate laws really did murder free speech. A low lying fence and a prejudiced neighbour see years of racial slurs rain down on an Aboriginal family. So how does 18C help to end racial abuse for everyday Australians? In 2SER's last episode of Just Words, we look at a little known 18C case that plays out in the front yards of a suburban street in Western Australia.
Just Words spoke to 18C plaintiff Jeremy Jones, who has used racial hatred laws to fight anti-Semitism since the section was introduced over 20 years ago.Jones is concerned that the proposed draft laws will open the flood gates when it comes to racist speech. He says the Coalition Government's plan to remove 'offend, insult and humiliate' and replace it with the term 'harass', as well as to more narrowly define the term 'intimidate' is a sign of 'immoral' leadership. Will the proposed changes to 18C still capture the concept of Holocaust denial?Just Words producer Anthony Dockrill spoke to Jeremy Jones, Director at the Australian Israel and Jewish Affairs Council on Wednesday 22 March, the day after Malcolm Turnbull flagged changes to Australia's race hate laws.
On March 30, a late-night debate in the Senate saw the Government's attempt to change section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act reach defeat, after an alliance by Labor, Greens, Nick Xenophon’s team and Jacqui Lambie, voted down the proposed changes - 31 to 28.This means that the plan to remove ‘offend, insult or humiliate” from section 18C and replace it with the term “harass” will no longer go ahead. Although we do expect to see some changes to the processes of the Human Rights Commission.Just Words producer Myles Houlbrook-Walk spoke to Senator David Leyonhjelm on March 21, a week prior to the bills defeat.
On March 21, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced a potential watering down of the controversial Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act.Under the proposal the words “offend, insult, humiliate” will be replaced by “harass”.The reforms were debated in the Senate on Tuesday, but little attention has been given to proposed procedural changes to the Australian Human Rights Commission, which will not only apply to 18C complaints but all complaints of discrimination handled by the Commission, including, sex, age, disability and race.Experts say this could make it more difficult for vulnerable members of the community to make complaints of vilification and discrimination.Just Words host Nic Healey spoke to Luke McNamara, Professor of Law from the University of New South Wales about the proposed 18C reforms and what they could really mean.Just Words Podcast Extra produced by Emma Lancaster

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, the young boardsman has already assembled a very impressive body of work in a relatively short time. In 2009 he came out guns blazing with his debut release for Stride Recordings, "The Future" EP. Subsequent singles, collaborations and remix projects like "Save Me" and "Photograph" caught the attention of labels from across North America and Europe and it wasn't long before they came knocking in search of fresh new music. His work with veteran producer Gremlinz led to a release on Bad Concept Records, while the legendary John Rolodex quickly took notice and recruited the budding newcomer as a key member and intricate part of his Machinist Music imprint. It was around this time that his reputation as a fierce and fine producer made a sharp ascent with the support of Drum & Bass tastemakers from Bailey to Loxy, Marky to Sub Focus and even the mighty Andy C all regularly playing his music out in their sets both on tour and syndicated radio. Riding the waves of a solid buzz both locally and globally, reputable labels like Rubik, New World Ordio, Dsci4 and Dylan's Freak Recordings scooped up music both already released and forthcoming from the artist touted as Canada's next big producer.
