From a young age, Selin Ozunaldim questioned gender stereotypes. When she was 17, her little brother told her that she didn't need to worry about studying because she could always get married. Hearing her brother say that made Selin realize she had to do something to change this way of thinking in her community. Now 19, Selin is the youngest representative of the United Nations' HeForShe movement in Turkey, a global effort to engage men and boys in the fight for gender equality. She also founded the first Girl Up Club and Girls Who Code in her country. In this episode, we explore the important role that young women and girls have historically played in fighting for change, equality, and justice for all. We examine how teen advocates have come to the forefront on the global stage, the challenges they overcame to get there, and how technology has amplified their advocacy. Featuring Selin Ozunaldim, National Gender Youth Activist for UN Women, HeForShe Advocate, and Melissa Kilby Executive Director, Girl Up at the United Nations Foundation. -- Finding Humanity is a production of Humanity Lab Foundation and Hueman Group Media. This week on Yes But Why, I talk to improviser, Chris Griswold.Chris Griswold is the founder and Academic Director of Thunderbolt Comedy.Having taught improv since 1999, Chris is currently one of the world's most prolific improv instructors, coaching more than 800 hours in 2014 alone. Chris is a writer and actor, appearing in commercials for Android and the Brother P-Touch Label Maker, as well as PSAs for the United Nation's #HeForShe program, and Project #UROK.Originally self-taught through weekly Pittsburgh improv jams, Chris has since trained with Upright Citizens Brigade, The PIT, Magnet Theater, The Annoyance Theatre, and Arcade Comedy Theater. Chris is now supporting the improv community in the San Francisco Bay area with Thunderbolt Comedy. They also teach private workshops for business and conferences on topics such as branding, team-building, and creativity training.I was absolutely enchanted by Chris, as I'm sure you will all be as well. In our conversation, we discussed how Chris immersed themselves in the NYC improv scene, and how they have now relocated to the San Francisco Bay area. Such big important improv communities; so much going on. Chris talked a lot about how important it is for people to be nice to each other. They said that when they teach improv, the effort is to unlock a performer's true potential, to show the students how they are great. We got into a big discussion about some bad behaviors Chris witnessed in improv communities across the country. We discuss diversity and inclusivity. When the pandemic hit, Chris had been coaching steadily through Thunderbolt Comedy. But then, when in person meetings stopped, they had to find another way. So Chris and developer friend Michael Parlato created Pineappl, a Video App for Live Performance. It is an alternative to Zoom, that functions better for live collaborative performance like improv. This app is used regularly by such institutions as Queen City Comedy to host their online jams. Chris Griswold is a kind-hearted performer and teacher. My conversation today is about the role of women in the tourism sector and how governance structures can be improved to uplift the girl child to the upper echelons of the tourism establishment. My Guest is Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka who is the Former Executive Director of UN Women and current Chairperson of the World Committee of Tourism Ethics. The former vice president of South Africa also discusses her mandate as the chair of the Tourism Ethics Committee and how tourism can be a real force for good. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka is a former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women. She was awarded a doctorate in Technology and Education from Warwick University. She has authored several scholarly and other opinion pieces. A Hauser Leader at the Harvard Kennedy School's Center for Public Leadership. She became a Member of Parliament, Deputy Minister of the Department of Trade and Industry, Minister of Minerals and Energy, and finally as Deputy President of South Africa from 2005 to 2008, Dr. Mlambo-Ngcuka worked tirelessly on programmes and policies to reduce inequality. As the head of the UNwomen, she has been a global advocate for women and girls. She established initiatives such as the HeForShe for men and boys to address gender Equality. She also successfully mobilized a historic $40 billion USD for women and girls around the world. She is a founder and leader of Umlambo Foundation which is dedicated to the improvement of education and digital literacy training for educators.
One of my listeners has just alerted me to a video of a speech that was released yesterday on the HeForShe Youtube channel. The speech was done at the United Nations by Harry Potter Actress, Emma Watson. She is launching a campaign called HeForShe. Even the title of the organization is suggesting that men should be utilities used for women. I'm including a link to the HeForShe speech at the United Nations in the description below. Larissa brought this to my attention and this is what she has to say: "Sandman, notice in the first few sentences of the article it says she wants gender equality and that Emma Watson is launching her new initiative called HeForShe. From what I gotten from the article according to my opinion, HeForShe is basically a utility campaign where she wants Men to do stuff for women and men to give up their rights for women calling it gender equality. Then she mentions stats about male suicide in the UK to cover up the real feminism agendas. Emma wants to launch her initiative through the United Nations to worldwide women to adopt the HEForShe agendas. This should be pointed out to your viewers. There was also some angry females like myself against feminism by speaking out by commenting on Yahoo news comments section. There were also men who were sharing their own experiences of feminists on Yahoo comments. I was very pleased of seeing men being upset and speaking out. It confirms the MGTOW movement is strong and growing. Thank You. Well, that's what Larissa has to say. I don't know what her real motivation is behind supporting men going their own way. Hopefully she can fill us in, in the comments section below. But none the less, thanks for bringing this video to our attention. The first thing I noticed about this video is that the comments section is closed. I also noticed that the thumbs up and thumbs down is disabled when you watch the video on Google. On the yahoo comments section where this video is posted there are almost forty five hundred comments. I'm not going to pull out any comments that stand out from Yahoo. I'm going to let you read thecomments section on your own. What I found most disturbing in this video is that Watson is promoting the idea that the label of feminism is damaged. And rightfully so as I believe it's damaged beyond repair or redemption. So now the new strategy by feminist organizations like HeForShe is to promote egalitarianism. Putting Egalitarianism in the place of Feminism is considered putting lipstick on a pig in my books. There's even a part of her talk where she mentions Hilary Clinton, which I'll get to a bit later.Emma Watson Delivers Stirring Speech at U.N.https://celebrity.yahoo.com/blogs/cel...MGTOW like ghosting...
