On May 20, 2021, Christopher Leahy delivered the banner lecture, “President without a Party” The first president to ascend to the office because of the incumbent's death, John Tyler also remains the nation's only chief executive to have been kicked out of his own political party. In September 1841, angry that Tyler's use of the veto destroyed their legislative agenda, members of the Whig Party held a ceremony at the Capitol and formally banished him from their ranks. Tyler's excommunication affected him personally, impacted his agenda, and destroyed his chances to win election in his own right in 1844. Portrayed by his contemporaries and by many historians as an ideologue whose rigid devotion to states' rights and strict construction of the Constitution forestalled compromise and made him a failed president, Leahy instead argues that Tyler largely favored a middle-of-the road, bipartisan approach to the nation's problems, and that it was his status as a president without a party and rejection by both the Whigs and opposition Democrats that doomed his presidency. Christopher Leahy is a professor of history at Keuka College in New York and the author of President without a Party: The Life of John Tyler as well as an article in the Virginia Magazine of History & Biography entitled “Playing Her Greatest Role: Priscilla Cooper Tyler and the Politics of the White House Social Scene, 1841–44” (2012). Historians have long viewed President John Tyler as one of the nation's least effective heads of state. In President without a Party―the first full-scale biography of Tyler in more than fifty years and the first new academic study of him in eight decades―Christopher J. Leahy explores the life of the tenth chief executive of the United States.Born in the Virginia Tidewater into an elite family sympathetic to the ideals of the American Revolution, Tyler, like his father, worked as an attorney before entering politics. Leahy uses a wealth of primary source materials to chart Tyler's early political path, from his election to the Virginia legislature in 1811, through his stints as a congressman and senator, to his vice-presidential nomination on the Whig ticket for the campaign of 1840. When William Henry Harrison died unexpectedly a mere month after assuming the presidency, Tyler became the first vice president to become president because of the death of the incumbent. Leahy traces Tyler's ascent to the highest office in the land and unpacks the fraught dynamics between Tyler and his fellow Whigs, who ultimately banished the beleaguered president from their ranks and stymied his election bid three years later.Leahy also examines the president's personal life, especially his relationships with his wives and children. In the end, Leahy suggests, politics fulfilled Tyler the most, often to the detriment of his family. Such was true even after his presidency, when Virginians elected him to the Confederate Congress in 1861, and northerners and Unionists branded him a “traitor president.”The most complete accounting of Tyler's life and career, Leahy's biography makes an original contribution to the fields of politics, family life, and slavery in the antebellum South. Moving beyond the standard, often shortsighted studies that describe Tyler as simply a defender of the Old South's dominant ideology of states' rights and strict construction of the Constitution, Leahy offers a nuanced portrayal of a president who favored a middle-of-the-road, bipartisan approach to the nation's problems. This strategy did not make Tyler popular with either the Whigs or the opposition Democrats while he was in office, or with historians and biographers ever since. Moreover, his most significant achievement as president―the annexation of Texas―exacerbated sectional tensions and put the United States on the road to civil war.-Dr. Leahy, who began teaching at Keuka College in August 2007, earned his bachelor's degree from Washington and Jefferson College, his master's degree from Virginia Tech, and his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University.

Chris Leahy was a fellow traveler with Colin in his days at LSU. Since 2007, he's been a professor a Keuka College in upstate New York. He has a new book out, President without a Party: A Life of John Tyler (LSU Press, 2020). His biography began as a dissertation in Baton Rouge, where Chris studied under the imposing William J. Cooper (a previous podcast guest on American Rambler). Chris talks with Colin about his days at LSU as well as growing up in Baltimore and his time at Virginia Tech. Chris has been working on his biography for more than 20 years. Born in the first years of the American republic into a Tidewater planter family, Virginia's John Tyler isn't one of the better known presidents. But his career in politics serves as an example of how a man can find himself accidentally put into a position of power and then find he doesn't really belong in any political camp. Tyler might have been U.S. president, but he ended his life loyal to the Confederacy. He died in early 1862, just before taking his place in the Rebel Congress. Ultimately, what kind of a man was Tyler? And what can he tell us about the time in which he lived?

Episode 152: Brian Zerges is a Licensed Real Estate Broker and sole owner of Finger Lakes Premier Properties (FLPP) for the last 25 years. After earning a BA from The Rochester Institute of Technology, Brian spent over seven valuable years as a Licensed Real Estate Broker in California specializing in commercial sales, syndication and property management. These experiences positioned him well to return to upstate New York and become the owner-operator of the largest lakeside real estate firm in the Finger Lakes. Brian is certified by the National Association of Realtors as a Resort and Second Home Specialist and an active member of the Vacation Rental Managers Association. With over 60 full-time year-round employees, FLPP maintains offices in Canandaigua and Penn Yan and specializes in property management and real estate sales. FLPP currently manages over 300 privately-owned single-family lakeside vacation rentals along with over 50 single-family homes. Its portfolio of commercial accounts has grown to include Keuka College and Best Western’s Vineyard Inn & Suites, Penn Yan. Many investors rely on Brian and his team to locate, purchase and manage lakeside investment properties with maximum rental income. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Brian Zerges about his special niche of selling real estate in the lakeside hospitality industry and the challenges that go along with it. What You Will Learn in This Episode: The special aspects and systems of selling real estate in the hospitality industry Similarities between hotels and house rentals in terms of visitor experience Creative solutions and features FLPP uses to stand out in the industry Why Brian’s niche is so challenging and how he and his team rise to the challenge Data Brian’s team gathers from its properties and customers and how that data is used What FLPP does to remain flexible and accommodate clients What “co-opetition” does for Brian’s team Lakeside Real Estate Brian Zerges is the sole owner of Finger Lakes Premier Properties, the largest lakeside real estate firm in the Finger Lakes. Brian’s experience in California real estate has made him a perfect fit for the competitive industry of real estate hospitality. He and his team of 60 full-time employees have discovered the ins and outs of operating in this unique niche, the required systems, and how to deliver the best visitor experience. Finger Lakes Premier Properties runs over 300 properties along hundreds of miles of shoreline. Each building is different due to topography, distance, client profile, and so much more. As the largest growing section of the lodging industry, vacation rentals require marketers and owners to keep up by implementing systems that go above and beyond. FLPP has a large, commercial laundry service that is constantly ensuring its properties have clean linens and other laundry supplies. This is just one of the many moving parts of making sure that all of those properties have maintenance and housekeeping 24/7, just like a hotel would. Brian’s team goes the extra mile to make their customers confident in the visitor experience. Finger Lakes tourists can rest easy knowing that the FLPP staff will be there to meet their every need, no matter the time. FLPP accomplishes this by thoroughly vetting its high-performing staff, evaluating metrics, and constantly searching for feedback from guests. Data about timing, costs, efficiency, quality, and numerous other things are gathered from the renters and taken into account when FLPP develops its systems, trains its staff, and updates its fees and policies. Innovation and Flexibility In a niche as hot as lakeside rentals, FLPP has to constantly adapt to meet the shifting needs and demands of the competitive industry. As always, this requires creativity! Brian and FLPP have leaned heavily into the lakeside aspect of their real estate properties, highlighting and optimizing a lake experience for their guests. Brian grew up on the lake, so he knows all about what lakeside living really means. This is where the team’s creativity comes forward, whether it’s having houses along Lake Street or having the word lake in their phone number. Alongside creativity, flexibility is incredibly important. With lots of clients at lots of different properties, FLPP has to be able to change plans at the drop of a hat to accommodate customers. One way they do this is through scattered check-in and check-out dates. While some of the property owners were resistant, Brian and FLPP have successfully made it so guests can successfully check in and out based on their needs without having to commit to a full Saturday to Saturday stay. This makes it easier for guests with hectic schedules and prevents FLPP from having to clean and prepare 300 houses on a given Saturday. One of the biggest ways FLPP continues to learn and grow is through collaboration and even competition. FLPP is always in touch with property owners to make sure they’re delivering the best experiences for guests and has helped form the Finger Lakes Vacation Rental Managers Association, a lakeside association helping to handle issues around the lake ranging from problem guests to pollution. They also collaborate with the Vacation Rental Exchange, a coalition of 13 vacation rental companies in the Northeast that come together to exchange ideas and have great discussions. Brian Zerges and FLPP are another fine example of creativity, innovation, and “co-opetition”, and I’m so glad I get to share some of their knowledge with you. In 1818, Mary Shelley published Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. What would nineteen-year-old Mary think if she knew that, two hundred years later, we’re still reading, discussing, and celebrating her novel? On October 22, the Penn Yan Public Library hosted a talk called Frankenstein at 200. Audience members watched a TEDEd refresher on the story, and then were treated to lively discussion about the book by Keuka College chemistry professor Andy Robak and local writer Bethany Snyder. Hosted by Adult Services Librarian Alex Andrasik, Frankenstein at 200 was captured on audio for the first episode of the new podcast, PYPL’s Cardigans and Conversation.

Jolene Creighton, founder, and editor-in-chief at Futurism, LLC (futurism.com), provides expert insight into the state of our advancing technologies and what the future holds for society. Some of Creighton's past accomplishments include her tenure as co-founder of From Quarks to Quasars and her noted work as a freelance writer with Hattiesburg American. She was an instructor at the University of Southern Mississippi. Creighton's Ph.D. work was focused on digital media & discourse analysis at the University of Southern Mississippi and her master of art study was at SUNY Brockport where she studied English language and literature/letters working toward her thesis on digital communication and viral storytelling. Creighton received her BA from Keuka College in Keuka Park, NY.  Creighton is a noted public speaker and writer in the field of science via digital, print, and video output. She has taught more than two dozen university courses on writing and communication. Creighton's work as editor-in-chief at Futurism brings together her many varied interests and profiles her expertise on the topic of future science and its applications across various media. Creighton discusses the pace of change as technology is accelerating, and the additional power that is packed into our devices as they decrease in size but expand in capability. She touts the many benefits of the changing technology landscape such as the nearly instantaneous reporting of news and events through media platforms such as YouTube and others that have revolutionized the news dissemination avenues.  Futurism is a media publication that covers the science and technology that is currently shaping our future. Creighton discusses their overall intention for the platform. Futurism's mission is to deliver captivating news and further the dialogue about forward-thinking products and narratives that make an impact on our world. Futurism, as Creighton explains, seeks to bring thought-provoking news items that bridge the expanding areas of science and technology. She details the interesting case studies and questions that surround the safety, science, and responsibility of autonomous vehicles as they dramatically expand into development and use in our society. She discusses the vigorous scientific debate that revolves around vaccinations, and other significant areas of science and medicine, and more, and how fear of technology can sometimes keep people from accepting proven science that can improve their lives or help to keep them safe. The futurist technology advocate also discusses some of the more dubious applications of technology such as social credit systems that rate the quality of someone as a citizen. She details how China is using algorithms to judge individuals and how parenting could be one way to increase someone's score, as bizarre as that idea may seem. She provides information on the government policy and research that goes into the development of technology and the checks and balances that are in place to ensure that technologies benefit people in a safe and effective manner. As technologies can be utilized for good and bad purposes and are being generated at a blistering pace, it is important to ensure that the development and release of technologies are monitored by multiple entities for the good of society. However, Creighton stresses that the overpublicized ‘worst case scenarios' that technology detractors speak and write about are typically absurd and unrealistic, and have little to no chance of becoming reality. In essence, she states that most advancing technologies will be used to benefit our lives in multiple ways.
