About 20 years ago, Cary Fowler and Geoffrey Hawtin wanted to prevent hunger and protect the world's food supply. The two men imagined a so-called “doomsday vault” for plant seeds. (A vault is a secure storage structure.) Fowler and Hawtin's goal was to keep a supply of seeds safe if existing seed banks were threatened by war, climate change, or other crises. They decided to build their storage building into the side of a mountain north of the Arctic Circle. “To a lot of people today, it sounds like a perfectly reasonable thing to do,” Fowler said from Saudi Arabia in an interview with the Associated Press. Seeds, he added, are a valuable natural resource that needs protection. But Fowler said: “Fifteen years ago, shipping a lot of seeds to the closest place to the North Pole that you can fly into (and) putting them inside a mountain…” did not sound reasonable. In his words, it was “…the craziest idea anybody ever had.” Their idea became the Svalbard Global Seed Vault on the Norwegian island of Svalbard. The vault opened in 2008 and now holds 1.25 million seed samples from nearly every country in the world. The structure was built into the side of a mountain. It protects the seeds of over 6,000 kinds of agriculturally important plants. The Crop Trust website says: “Its purpose is to backup genebank collections to secure the foundation of our future food supply.” Last week, Fowler and Hawtin were named the 2024 World Food Prize winners for their work. Fowler is now the U.S. special diplomat for global food security. Hawtin is an agricultural scientist from Britain. They were named the winners of the yearly prize at the U.S. Department of State in Washington. Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised the men at the announcement for their “critical role in preserving crop diversity.” For many years, countries have created seed banks to store seeds for future use. But Fowler said he was concerned that climate change would cause disorder in agriculture. This would make the seed supply even more important. Hawtin is an executive board member at the Global Crop Diversity Trust, an international nonprofit group. He said there were a lot of threats to crops in the past, such as insects, disease, land degradation, and political unrest. He said that climate change has made these problems worse. So, he and Fowler saw a need for additional secure seed storage. Hawtin explained that climate change is changing pests and diseases. He added, “Climate change is putting a whole lot of extra problems on what has always been significant ones.” Fowler and Hawtin said they hope winning the World Food Prize will help them raise more money for seed banks around the world. Operating them is not too costly. However, the financial support needs to continue forever. “This is really a chance to get that message out and say, look, this relatively small amount of money is our insurance policy -- our insurance policy that we're going to be able to feed the world in 50 years,” Hawtin said. 。 Norman Borlaug established the World Food Prize. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his part in what is called the “Green Revolution.” That was a big effort to make crops more productive so the world's growing population would not go hungry. This fall, Fowler and Hawtin will accept the prize in Des Moines, Iowa, the city where the food prize foundation is based. They will also split the $500,000 award. This year's prize will be presented at the yearly Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue. The conference will be held in Des Moines from October 29 to the 31.

One of my favourite mixes is Ritchie Hawtin's DE9 Closer to the Edit. DE9 refers to the equipment he used; essentially two Decks, Effects and a 909 unit. He brilliantly chops up hundreds of tracks into a kinetic, beat orientated mix. I've often wondered what the underlying tracks were like.. So last weekend I hunted a good proportion of them down, and created my own mix. I've taken a different approach though - I wanted to stay away from Hawtin's technique (as he does it so well!) - instead i've tried to take the opposite direction - no decks, no effects, no 909. The mix is created live on my DDJ controller & Rekordbox using only volume faders and minimal EQ - no additional samples or overlays used. Many of the tracks have bpm drift and the phasing of tracks is a challenge too given how repetitive some are. Anyway, here it is - enjoy!

Welcome to Showcasing House Music DJ Mixes by dattrax!! Decided on a mock interview format to share our thoughts on some House DJ related topics we've seen online lately, PART1...We hope that you enjoy this mix also. Cheers, dattraxWHAT IS WITH ALL THIS HOOPLA ONLINE ABOUT DJS WHO USE SYNC BUTTONS TO MATCH BEATS?Sync or no-sync, at the end of the day it's about rocking crowds, making great memories and experiences, so it doesn't matter. If you have fans, then someone likes what you do, then that's what we're all after isn't it?Having said this, there are a few things we'd like to share:Some big DJs like DeadMau5, David Guetta and Steve Angelo, etc. who use premixed mixes for live shows are like modern day rock stars with legions of fans paying lots of money to listen to their pre-programmed sets, so it seems that this is what their fans want, their form of 'live' entertainment. Doesn't seem that their fans care if it's really live or not.DNothing wrong with that. Loud music blasting in your ears while you dance your stress & worries away is what it's always been about.Don't really have a beef with pre-programed sets or synced mixing, but our beef is with pretending to DJ and then denying that they are syncing, etc (recent example is the online scuffle between DJ Sneak and Steve Angelo about 'fake djing'- remember the Milli Vanilli lip syncing scandal in '80s? Same deal).Angelo apparently denies this, even after images and youtube vids of him at live events circulate all over Facebook that prove otherwise. Angelo has a massive following that love his tunes, so what's the big deal Stevie? Just say you do and so what if you do, but don't say that you play live when you clearly don't.Syncing is important for DJs like Richie Hawtin. Hawtin is a pioneer, a scientist and master show man- working a laser light show, always mixing four tracks at the same time, doing 1/2 a dozen effects at any one time. In his case, beat matching has to take a backseat so he can create and inspire. That's different. If you just mix two records together (like we do), then why do that? The fun for us has always been in the mixing! The ups and downs of trying different track combos, different house genre combos, playing tracks at different speeds or EQ settings that we enjoy rather than what they were created at, using line levels and cross faders to change the tension between during mixes, mixing out properly to not change the tempo in an undesired way, seeing how what we do fail or succeed in getting a shared reaction of joy from a fellow House Fiend. We grew up with great Toronto DJs, like Aki. who was mixing beautiful house journeys in smoky, dark & packed warehouse parties before dj mixers had single channel EQs or effects buttons (the internet, mp3's, Facebook or cell phones). Listen for yourself- just house music and mixing. This mix was on cassette tape (google it!) made in 1996 by Aki with two twelves and a old school mixer:http://torontohousedjs.podomatic.com/entry/2011-03-03T10_38_24-08_00We forked out good money each week to go crazy to amazing talents like Jason Palma, PTS (Peter, Tyrone & Shams), Dave Campbell, Kevin Williams and Dino & Terry- these guys made you danced till the sun rose.We saw out of town talents like Roger Sanchez, Derrick Carter, Doc Martin, Cevin Fisher, DJ Sneak and Little Louie Vega blow our minds with 2 or 3 vinyl turntables- all these guys made us grow more in love with house music each time we partied to their brand of house! The art and wonder of it all. Learning what we liked or didn't like about the mixing or music programming. Always learning and having fun along the way.We also take issue with some DJs saying that beat matching is so easy and take no time to learn to justify their syncing. We just have one question:"If it's so easy, then why are you using the sync??!!"If you want to sync, then do it, it's your art form and the way you want to express yourself. Just don't pretend that you do it because it's not worth your creative focus & energies, or that you don't when you in fact do. Life is simple but some people choose to make it difficult.---------------Reach out to us and comment. Just Google 'dattrax' and you'll find all places online that we've been a part of. It all started with The Prodigy, they were his first music influence, later on Antoine Clamaran and Carl Cox, today Dubfire, Carola, Luciano. He found the world of DJing fascinating with all the different genres, from techno then house and dark progressive and finally minimal-tech-house which he now plays and produces. Had gigs in many clubs across Serbia and at the Exit fest, Foam Fest and Love Fest. His tracks were played by Dubfire, Hawtin, Carola, Umek, Varela, Spartaque, Oxia... but the biggest support comes from Deeperfect owner Stefano Noferini. Has signings with some major minimal labels in the business: Little Helpers, Tres14, Innocent, Antura, Conceptual, Kootz, Malicious Smile, Psicodelica, Mushroom Smile, Frequenza, Nopreset, Go Deeva...

NEW GLOBAL FALSE CHURCH C. Peter Wagner and Ben F Gray wrote: “The New Apostolic Reformation is an extraordinary work of the Holy Spirit that is changing the shape of Christianity globally. It is truly a new day! The Church is changing. New names! New methods! New worship expressions; The Lord is establishing the foundations of the Church for the new millennium. This foundation is built upon Apostles and Prophets. NOTE: This “new foundation” is built upon the wicked minds of men and women that Wagner and Gray call, “Apostle and Prophets.” Of course, they are chosen by Wagner. This new global church that Wagner is building, he says, is changing new names, such as naming churches, “Destiny, Community, etc.” (a Masonic name for one of their gods); new methods (opening star gates inviting demons, oops, angels) prophesying lies, worshipping planets, etc); new worship expressions, (inviting native pagan, goddess and god worship styles). Some even walk around with shepherd’s staffs and real swords to do battle with their imagined enemies. Naturally, this is all being motivated by the powers of darkness to infiltrate real Christians and cause them to stumble into their religious insanity of new churches, new ways of worship, new structures of faith and following new false prophets and prophetesses. The International Coalition of Apostles headed by C. Peter Wagner is the most influential purveyor of the New Apostolic Reformation, a term coined by Wagner. This organization is really an extension of the New Order of the Latter Rain whose influences and mentors include William Branham, Franklin Hall, the Hawtin brothers, and more recently Bill Hamon, Paul Cain (Disgraced alcoholic-homosexual) Bob Jones (Perverted false prophet) and the Kansas City Prophets. The doctrines of the Latter Rain have influenced most of the televangelists on TV today, and so have crept deceptively into many denominations.

Ambivalent Is Certain About His Life After Minimal Techno Kevin McHugh spreads his wings with new labels and artistic ideas. Kevin McHugh didn't set out to be a techno musician. But when his work in the world of NYC's modern art scene crossed over into the realm of minimal techno in the early 00s, he caught a wave that took him all the way to Berlin as part of Richie Hawtin's Minus label. He was soon traveling the world under the name Ambivalent, spreading the gospel of Berlin's trendy ambience with compatriots like Magda, Marc Houle and Heartthrob. "It became a big thing on [Minus] when that label was a big thing," he says modestly of his 2007 breakout single, "R U OK," a prime example of the drugged-yet-cheeky, plink-plonky sound that took over techno a decade ago. Since departing Minus in 2012, Kevin has debuted two new aliases — the house-inspired Amber and gritty LA-4A — and launched his own Delft and Valence labels and to release a broader palette of dance music than the haus of Hawtin had allowed for in the past. He's also continued his Ambivalent guise, partnering up with techno stars Sven Vath, Josh Wink and Sasha to release music on their Cocoon, Ovum and Last Night On Earth Imprints respectively. Always self-examining and sometimes painfully honest, Kevin explains the twists and turns it's taken him to reach this point in his career, with a critical eye towards both his past and his future.

This Week's Very Special Guest DJ - John Acquaviva. John began his international career in 1989 with Richie Hawtin by founding one of the world's best known and influential techno labels, Plus 8 Records. In 1993, Acquaviva and Hawtin also founded Definitive Recordings and the label is now celebrating 15 years of legendary club and underground anthems. An acknowledged pioneer of new music and ideas, John was one of the first people to take notice and embrace electronic music's digital future at the dawn of 2000 by championing Final Scratch. And following that success, John took another enormous step to help launch Beatport.com, the biggest dance-music download site in the world. With an unparalleled legacy in the annals of analog and digital electronic music John Acquaviva can boast and list pages of accomplishments in just about every aspect of the music world. Surging to the very top of the production and DJ world in the past handful of years with a steady stream of club anthems and chart topping tunes, his productions have won over and set the mood for an entire generation of clubbers and clubbing worldwide. Not satisfied with just his own work, Acquaviva has also relaunched the seminal Definitive Recordings imprint, taking it to its highest levels ever, fostering new artists, DJs and producers such as Olivier Gaicomotto, Kid Dub, Robot Needs Oil/Greg Kobe, to mention but a few. The tireless Acquaviva is perpetually on worldwide tour, trying to keep up with all the requests. Due to incredible demand the past year he has been featured at some of the key Spring and Summer festivals, including BENICASSIM, Global Gathering, Kaballah in Brasilas well as key summer dates such as the Privilige 2008 season opening party in Ibiza, Space with Danny Tenaglia, Nikki Beach in Marbella, Cocoricco in Riccione, Tito's & Abraxas in Palma and closer to home at Toronto, Canada's new mega-club CiRCA with a host of others in between and all over. His international career has spanned 2 decades now, having DJ'd professionally for almost another decade before that. Throughout thousands of parties millions of people have heard him play and continue to keep him in demand. Get in line or get on the guest-list if you can, and get into the sound and vision of a new generation.
