"Going into this race, I was like, 'Top 10, that sounds like a really good goal. I can do that. Top 10.' And then when that race started, I was like, 'Holy crap, Top 10 is going to be so hard. This is the most talented group of women I have ever been surrounded by.' Everywhere I looked, I was like, 'You're amazing, you're amazing, you're incredible…' I felt honored to be among those women. I just look up to all these women around me." "Have kids and dreams." It's Makenna Myler's mantra (surely you've seen her post-race video that quickly went viral), and it's exactly what she's doing. Episode SummaryMakenna Myler, while pregnant with her first child, ran a mile in five minutes and 25 seconds— just 10 days before she gave birth to her daughter in October. Her husband, Mike, created a TikTok post that accumulated over 6 million views. Her story jumped to numerous other news sites around the world...and she just did it again, right before this recording---running a 5:17 just days before she's set to have her second child. The following spring after having her first, she started entering races to qualify for the Olympic trials. At the end of May, she finally qualified with a time of 32:03.62 in a 10,000-meter race in Oregon. Her time was almost three minutes faster than her best collegiate time.[2]In the trials on June 26, 2021—seven months after having her first baby—she placed 14th out of 44 runners in a highly competitive 10,000-meter race. Although she didn't go on to compete in the Olympics, she signed a contract to run professionally for Asics. In her debut as a pro runner, she ran the Deseret News half marathon in 1:09.54, beating the old course record set by fellow BYU standout Sarah Sellers. Makenna competed in track and field for Brigham Young University from 2011 to 2014.Episode SponsorRunner Click Pro – https://pro.runnerclick.com/Key Takeaways00:58 – Whitney Heins welcomes Makenna Myler to the show to share her running story, including how she ran a mile in five minutes and forty-five seconds while 9-months pregnant14:17 – Makenna reflects on her very first ‘Pregnant Mile'20:09 – The genesis of The Naked Myler21:45 – Key running lessons Makenna has learned throughout the years27:53 – Changes Makenna has made that have helped her with running through her cycle33:35 – The importance of showing up35:28 – The ‘Internal Governor,' explained41:45 – Makenna reflects on her experience and the realities of running while pregnant51:16 – Makenna shares the goals she has for her website54:21 – Whitney thanks Makenna for joining the show and sharing her storyTweetable Quotes“So, we did the [pregnant] mile. It wasn't really planned that well. I was jumping in the middle of this guy's three-mile tempo. It wasn't an official race. He was even late because he was trying to do a run before I even did the mile. And then he came, filmed it, thought it was funny so he tried to make a funny video to show our friends and family, and posted it on TikTok. And then half a day later he said, ‘You have half a million views and ESPN wants to post your video.'” (16:44) (Makenna)“I think what hit me the most was the self-deprecating comments that happened so much. And that's why we actually started The Naked Myler, which kinda led into this female-running guide for women because so many people - and especially women - were like, ‘Wow, I can't even get off the couch and I'm a terrible person because I can't run a five minute mile.' I really wanted to help people and help them connect happiness with running.” (19:05) (Makenna)“Now, we have the Naked Myler blog, which is a resource of women - four females - who are running through all things pregnancy, periods, all the hormonal changes to help them navigate how to do that with their cycles.” (20:34) (Makenna)“First, just mentally understanding that was a huge game changer. I would still show up for the same workout, but I would have to understand, ‘Ok, my body is not responding today. I'll cut the workout in half. That is ok and I'm not going to let that drag me down or ruin my training. I'm just going to continue on.'” (27:58) (Makenna)“I think it's also important to distinguish between adaptations and racing. Because, to me, training is where you're trying to get your body to adapt to stimulus. And the race is more of the
Rep Mel Myler & Rep David Luneau, both of Merrimack District 9 are the Ranking Democrat members and the Deputy Ranking Member respectively of the NH House Committee on Education. They have been leading the charge within the legislature for greater accountability and equity in public education, particularly with respect to the new Educational Freedom Accounts that provide annual grants to families who place their children in private schools, with virtually no accountability, educational standards, or oversight. When you listen to this podcast you will find yourself both disgusted by the unjust and likely-unconstitutional (soon to be adjudicated) use of millions of dollars of taxpayer funding being doled out to thousands of families whose children were already in private, often-religious, schools before the passage of the Education Freedom Account law, administered by a private contractor - not the NH Department of Education, and not subject to any legislative oversight.Parents who enroll their children in the program forfeit all special education assistance to the child, leaving their child as the primary victim of the transition. The only requirement to qualify for this grant is that the household is beneath an approximately $80,000/year income level but this requirement is only for the first year. If a family enrolls a first grader in the program this year, irrespective of how high their income goes over the course of their child's education, they will be eligible to collect the grant through the end of high school, with no recertification of income level.3,200 children are enrolled in this program, receiving a public grant of between $7-$9,000 per year per child. 3,100 children were already in private schools before the program went into effect and only 100 students applied to move from public schools to private schools. This represents a direct transfer of wealth, from communities throughout the state to families who were already sending their children to private schools. Then there is the hopeful news. For the first time in more than 20 years, a committee was appointed, Chaired by Rep Luneau, with support from the Carsey Center at UNH, a think tank, to do a broad assessment of educational funding, based on empirical data now available. What they discovered is that funding for public education is adequate but that changes to the formula for distribution are needed. That's right. More money is not the problem. How that money is allocated could substantially improve the equity of public education for all of our kids.

Our first premiere of the week starts off with a thump as PETDuo feature on Purgatory's first release with a high octane hard techno techno anthem. The Brazilian duo have supplied a rapacious peak time track, with slamming low end, tortuous synth lines and crisped looping grooves. Irish techno party Purgatory launches its first chapter as a label with a hard hitting VA of angry techno. Purgatory was born in Berlin with the aim of hosting tough as nails techno parties with avant-garde acts from across Europe and Ireland. Purgatory has hosted heavy hitters Dave Clarke, Chlär, Echoes Of October, Illnurse, Cailín, Jamie Behan & more across Berlin, Manchester & Galway. The party & label celebrates its year anniversary of ferocious techno, with the birth of the label which features act's from Ireland and further ashore, which keeps in line with labels ethos. Among the bill of producers on the VA is Cailín, Richie Corrigan, D. Carbone, Aero, Myler, Felix6ood & Pet Duo. Our second feature of the VA comes from Brazillian hard techno pairing, PETDuo. The formidable duo have been hugely influential in the hard techno scene over the years, spreading their sound across seminal parties, clubs and festival such as, Love Parade, I Love Techno, TimeWarp, Awakenings and countless others. The pair have also worked alongside some of techno's most influential characters in the world of hard, tough and straight up banging techno such as, Miss Djax, Svetec, Ben Long, O.B.I., Alex TB and Malke. Since forming on 1997 PetDuo have undoubtedly made their mark on hard techno and have released on Hydraulix, Audio Assault, their own imprints Cause Records, PHONK! Records, D & A Music & a host of others. PETDuo's contribution to the Purgatory VA show's the pair at the hardest and raviest as they blend an amalgamation of churning synths, groveling bass and hammering bass drums. This hard techno done properly, as the duo tell a story of peak time warehouse techno. We can see this getting played a lot over the summer. Tough off-kilter bass drums, work with sliver licked percussion hits and troublesome distorted atmospheres. The track has sudden breakdown points, before arriving at a new venomous energy. Makenna Myler is a professional distance runner for Asics who has lived all over the world, now trains in Utah, and she qualified for her first Olympic Trials after becoming a mother. We talk about being coachable, having tough conversations with teammates to create a healthy competitive culture, your circle of control, training in tune with your hormones, and our shared love of ridiculous holiday cards. This interview was done as research for the book I'm writing about the mental lessons learned and practiced in running and motherhood. I'm sharing these recordings so you can come along in this book writing process with me! We brought the sweet 16 episode with my sweet thang, my gf joined the bros and we got into some heated discussions from astrology signs, charging your crystals, witchcraft and other things ladies enjoy doing. An age old question was asked and answered to set the record straight (ToA). Brook calls me out a few times on some freaking bologna (she's mostly right tho). Tyler told us a story about how he exposes his buddy on IG for his 15th bday (RUDE). We dive into some requested dm's and brook teaches us how gross old dirty men are. love u bros and broets follow brook on IG; @brook.myler @orange.swim
“That seems to have diminished quite a bit since having a baby. The outcomes really don't matter. It's just so much more about who I'm becoming as I'm trying to reach these goals. It's so cliché, right — the journey. But it really is true. The journey and who you're becoming are just so much more important.” Last year, Makenna Myler went viral when she ran a mile in five minutes and 25 seconds — at nine months pregnant. On this episode, Makenna talks about that day, and about the bet she had with her husband that motivated the run. She also talks about the aftermath of going viral, and the criticism she received just days before going into labor. Today, Makenna is mom to one-year-old Kenny Lou, and she's had a strong comeback on the run. She qualified for the Olympic Track & Field Trials in the 10K, competed at the Trials and finished 14th (her goal was to finish in the top 15!), won the Deseret News Half Marathon (and set a course record in the process), and signed a professional contract with Asics. Most recently, Makenna ran the TCS New York City Marathon — and she's hungry for more. Plus, Makenna talks about her expectations about running and motherhood, and shares what the reality has been like for her. SPONSOR: UCAN. In October 2020, Makenna Myler made headlines when a viral video showed her running a mile in 5 minutes and 25 seconds. Those numbers would be impressive for anyone—but Makenna did it just 10 days before giving birth to her first child. Still, her running time isn't the only thing Makenna is excited about; it's her opportunity to shine a positive light on motherhood and wellness in pregnancy. On this week's episode, Makenna shares what she has discovered about the sometimes surprising role of God's plan as we pursue our hopes and dreams. Shane Myler grew up in a divorced houshold with his mom and four younger siblings. The family moved quite frequently through four divorces, spending some time in a homeless shelter and foster care. Shane dropped out of school his high school senior year. He threw himself into his passion of tae Kwon do. Shane opened his own martial arts school, but money was extremely tight. Unable to afford rent, he slept on friends' couches. As newlyweds, Shane and his wife, Aly, worked odd jobs to support themselves. They lived in the studio for several months with no air conditioning or heating. They joined a local gym to have shower facilities. In 2017, the Myler family, with Shane at the helm, created Ninja Kidz TV. Four years later, the YouTube channel has over 12 million subscribers and 5 billion views. They have a toy line in every U.S. Target and Walmart. After overcoming life's obstacles, Shane proved hard work, persistence, and dedication will result in living the American dream.
