This week, Plodcast regular Kevin Parr explores a lost church in Dorset. St Luke's Chapel was built to serve the village of Sterte near Abbotsbury, in the 1240s. The chapel remained in use until the mid 16th Century when it was abandoned following the Act of Supremacy (1534) that gave Henry VIII the power to disband religious buildings. All that remains of the chapel (and the village) is a single wall and arch, which stands deep in the woodland of Ashley Chase, although a more recently constructed altar carries votive offerings and painted stones left by the handful of visitors who pick through the trees to pay homage. Kevin samples the atmosphere of this eerie place and looks for ghosts. Contact the Plodcast team and send your sound recordings of the countryside to: editor@countryfile.com. There is a particular kind of joy in the simple act of curling up in an armchair with a book on a winter's day, or going to a café with nothing to do but take in the next chapter, or going to bed early and sitting up against soft pillows to read by lamplight. Words can be a real comfort in the darkest of seasons - both those we read and those we write. I hope this episode inspires you to pull down a favourite book off the shelf and have a read, or perhaps treat yourself to some poetry, or a new story, or a self-help book that is going to carry you through the winter. We're in a little cottage deep in the Dorset countryside. The fire is lit. Steam swirls from a mug of tea. The curtains are drawn and we wait. Outside, there is a moment of calm as though the world is taking a deep breath. A storm is rolling in off the Atlantic, but before the wind comes the rain. Thudding into the brickwork and flicking off leaves and guttering. In the warm, we cosy up to listen. We're resting on a field gate. Late summer warmth spills into the autumn. The sun slow to rise but blazing when it does. The overnight dew clings on in the shadows, while the long grass of the field margins rattle with the chirrup of grasshoppers. Flies and bees buzz. A nuthatch bubbles from the hedgerow. A last hurrah before the first frost. Creator Kevin Parr's love of pop culture and nerd fandom was bred into him from an early age. His mother worked as a Computer Graphics Artist for EA Sports in the late 80's, and throughout his childhood he participated in endless tours of the gaming headquarters, and was even a child game tester from time-to-time. This fostered his passion for games and the gaming community. Being a fan of the fantasy genre, Kevin was drawn to D&D thanks to a group of friends - regulars that visited him at his bar every Sunday morning for breakfast - who would not only regale him with tales of their campaigns but would invite him to his first D&D session. This is also where Kevin would meet his long time collaborator, Geordie Rose, who since day one has been the backbone of what has become Dicecream Sandwich, a D&D brand focused on collaborating with fellow creators and artists to tell amazing stories and showcase TTRPG talents to the masses. Since then, Kevin's growth in the D&D and TTRPG communities has been exponential, leading to partnerships and sponsorships with various brands and third-party TTRPG companies, opportunities to DM live games at GenCon and D&D in a Castle, and to his role as a full-time content producer for Questline, a TTRPG youtube channel created by A Filthy Lot Studios. It's early morning in a secretive bay on northern Anglesey. You're walking on a shingle bank that separates a serene, reed-fringed lagoon from the restless rising tide. The pipes and skirls of oystercatchers, redshanks and curlews rise over the wash of the waves but above them all, the sulphurous scents of beached seaweed.BBC Countryfile Magazine's Sound Escapes are a weekly audio postcard from the countryside to help you relax and transport you somewhere beautiful, wherever you happen to be.Recorded by Kevin Parr, presented by Hannah Tribe. This week's guest is Garrett Fallon - someone who grew up in Ireland fishing the Boyne, Corrib, Deel and other rivers and lakes around the country but since the 1990s he has been in England working in publishing and design. The last few years however has seen him combine his love of fishing, writing and publishing to create the very popular fishing quarterly magazine, Fallon's Angler, which is dedicated to longform writing about every type of angling with the likes of Chris Yates and Kevin Parr featuring in each issue. Garrett is also the son of Niall Fallon, an Irish Times journalist who wrote the well-respected Fly Fishing for Irish Trout in 1983 and we speak to Garrett about his father's influence growing up, his own memories of fishing in Ireland and why Fallon's Angler has helped him find the soul of angling along the way.Keep up to date on IrelandontheFly.com as well as on Instagram.com/IrelandontheFly.
