There's no worse regret than "I didn't know you did that." "I didn't know I could hire you for that." You have to tell people what you do for your job and profession, how you get paid, how you create value for others and how you help people with your professional services or products if it's something you genuinely believe in. This is not a sales pitch or a conversion process. This is not ABC "Always Be Closing". This is a value conversation, which is much better. Be brave enough to advocate for yourself, your business or brand. If you don't do it for yourself, no one else will. Talk about what you do or what you're working on casually, in an informational way. Be bold and talk about your business or side hustle. Talk about your goals. Talk about your band, art or social media account you're trying to build. Talk about a new degree you're working on because you want to change your career. Talk about things you want to do, get people involved, get people invested. Create relationships and then go from there with a potential for success. You know me, I'm Kyle Golding. I'm not just the guy behind the Saturday Morning Hustle. I'm also the CEO and Chief Strategic Idealist for The Golding Group, an award-winning think tank of strategic planning, business process management, integrated marketing and public relations consultants. We work with your leadership team to develop strategy, determine the most effective action plans, then execute and measure. We create processes, systems and protocols that can be measured, adjusted and repeated by incorporating data analysis, market trends and audience feedback in a two-way conversation. Tell people what it is you do. Tell people how it's different than other options. Tell them the value that you create. Tell them the audience you're looking for. Tell them who gets the best value out of your product or service, how you want to serve them, how you want to create for them, connect with them, build business relationships, etc... Explain these things to people, but not in a sales pitch. Don't try to sell it directly to them. Just tell friends, tell family, tell casual acquaintances. When you're networking or at a holiday event, when you meet someone and they ask, "What did you do for a living?" don't just say you're in accounting, legal, medical, business, consulting, etc... Tell them "I own a business; this is what we do. This is whom we serve." If the person listening finds value in that, you might have an opportunity, but they also might know someone or refer someone to your business. If you're going to be in business, if you're going to be a self-brand, if you're going to be a hustler, grinder or an entrepreneur, you got to be comfortable telling people who you are, what you do, the value you create, what's distinct about your business, what's good about doing business with you, why people should pay attention, why they should trust you. You have to be comfortable talking about it, not promotionally, not trying to make money, but being confident in what you do by connecting with people. Try to build relationships that eventually could lead to a business transaction. Put things in the correct order. Be confident. Be willing to do it for yourself, your business and your future success. Let's talk about it on the SMH podcast today! It's Saturday. I'm in the office. This is the Saturday Morning Hustle podcast. Quiet Quitting is a relatively new phenomenon in which young professionals claim to be doing the bare minimum to reprioritize work-life balance. Employees doing the bare minimum of effort to earn a paycheck to renew an emphasis on life outside of work. But, this is not popular with employers, some of which are countering with Quiet Firing or giving employees less responsibility, limiting their role and potential for advancement. Both Quiet Quitting and Quiet Firing are detrimental to both employees and employers. We have advice for avoiding both on the podcast today. "The Professor" Pritch Pritchard, APR & Fellow PRSA is taking a deep dive into the scourge of modern communications: Misinformation, Malinformation and Disinformation. We identify, define and discuss the different types of media manipulations prevalent in today's 24/7 global media mix. Misinformation is false, but not created or shared with the intention of causing harm. Disinformation is deliberately created to mislead, harm, or manipulate a person, social group, organization, or country. Malinformation is based on fact, but used out of context to mislead, harm, or manipulate. Pritch references the disinformation literacy resources of PRSA: http://voices4everyone.prsa.org/disinformation/disinformation-literacy/ To contact us for advice, assistance or collaboration: https://thegoldinggroup.com/contact-us/
We're discussing all the mistakes and missteps of many start-ups and small businesses that can add up to presenting a picture of failure, not success. These minor errors can collectively harm or kill a new or small brand. We cover basics like having a proper website with corresponding email addresses, official phone numbers, and cohesive social media accounts. Failure to explain product/service, differentiation, value proposition, the people involved or not telling your story (you assume no one cares, but they do). Too much focus on sales numbers or marketing before product/service development. Making way too many assumptions, not being patient enough and chasing fast cash are just a few of the topics we cover on this episode. On the #NeoMarketing podcast, The Golding Group partners Kyle Golding and Pritch Pritchard, APR & Fellow PRSA discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options. The ability to delegate is an often misunderstood and overlooked leadership skill. Yet, delegation is the quickest way to promote, or stagnate, business growth. Without delegation within an organization, you have a much higher potential for inefficiency, employee burnout and missed opportunities. Consumers are more sophisticated than ever in 2022. They know businesses are collecting data on them, some of which they voluntarily share via search engines, website clicks and opt-ins. It's not enough to stop at basic, generic demographic data for marketing. In 2022, all businesses (big and small) need to further inspect, analyze and activate the data they have on current and prospective customers to highly customize marketing, customer service and sales process. Spend more time exploring curated product/service offerings, inventory on demand and unique offers for the smallest audience subgroups. Focus on repeat business, referrals, brand loyalty and highly focused differentiation. An old idea that's very, very relevant in 2022: Lifetime Value of advertising, marketing, public relations and customer service. We discuss the impact of lifetime value in '22 based on an article written in the 1980's by Pritch's dad (an original "Mad Man" advertising pro): Pritchard Jr, H. O. "A Member's Lifetime Value: Seeing Member Acquisition as an Investment in Your Organization's Future." Association Management 36.6 (1991): 35-39. There is huge profitability in retaining clients instead of constant attraction, thus lifetime value of repeat business along with recommendations, endorsements and (potential) brand evangelist. We break down the why, how to execute, measurement, budgeting and management of creating lifetime value as an investment, not an expense. 00:00 From expense to investment 00:39 Intro 02:42 The longer they stay, the more value created 06:48 Evaluation of your product/service/program offering 08:30 The answer isn't always "just charge more" 11:00 Value added 14:50 All based on research of what's valuable to your audience 16:50 Profitable and sustainable On the #NeoMarketing podcast, The Golding Group partners Kyle Golding and Pritch Pritchard, APR & Fellow PRSA discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options. Episode 134 was inspired by a recent conversation we had with a new business owner who was overwhelmed by too much information. He had taken a multi-week class on starting a business, read blogs, listened to podcasts and purchased a franchise that came with a huge marketing manual. The problem was where to start, how to focus on what's most important and how all the advice in the world could b put into the simplest version possible to get his business off the ground. That's what we did for him and we hope to do for you with this episode. His 800 pages instruction manual had 798 too many pages. Everything necessary was on the first two pages: Brand, Products & Services, SWOT, Audience, Advertising (all of it), Public Relations, Sales. We break all of these segments down to simple, easiest-to-understand action plans. 05:00 It was all on the first two pages 10:38 Brand + Product/Service DIFFERENTIATION #1 13:37 POSITION vs. competition #2 20:41 Target AUDIENCE #3 24:54 SET and MEET EXPECTATIONS #4 29:50 FOCUS on most effective channel(s) first #5 On the #NeoMarketing podcast, The Golding Group partners Kyle Golding and Pritch Pritchard, APR & Fellow PRSA discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options. On Ep133 of The Golding Group #NeoMarketing Podcast, Pritch Pritchard, APR & Fellow PRSA will react to the PR disaster of the Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel who made a minor crisis much worse by responding in all the wrong ways. Pritch will utilize Jim Lukaszewski’s “Profiles in Failure” list of things NOT to do during crisis management. Nessel somehow managed to do everything on this list of actions to avoid. Not just a teachable moment, but a whole series of “what not to do” examples. “Sometimes the only way to help organizations avoid embarrassment, humiliating visibility, enormous litigation, and just plain stupidity is to illustrate dramatically the pattern of behaviors and attitudes that lead to catastrophic reputational trouble.” Jim Lukaszewski calls this pattern “Profiles in Failure.” https://www.e911.com/profiles-failure-behavior-patterns-precipitate-perpetuate-trouble/ NBC NEWS: Michigan’s AG got drunk before a football game and wrote about it on Facebook. "The Professor" Pritch Pritchard, APR & Fellow PRSA challenges co-host and Golding Group CEO Kyle Golding to a philosophical debate on the Friedman Doctrine: The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase Its Profits. Friedman is known as one of the most influential economists of the 20th century. The Friedman doctrine has been very influential in the corporate world but has also attracted criticism. We go deep and wide in the back-and-forth discussion. Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedman_doctrine. With a lot of businesses transitioning from work from home (WFH) back to the office the concept and execution of Corporate Culture is once again becoming more important. But corporate culture doesn't happen overnight. We have two real-world examples of (1) how to build and (2) how to erode corporate culture through attention to (or lack of) details to discuss, analyze and craft teachable moments. This week, Pritch wants to show some love to earned media. In particular, creating relationships with media sources and how to professionally pitch your story ideas. The key is doing a good job sending topics, news releases and story ideas with an actual "News Peg" to it and not everything your client wants "news" for. The relationship should work both ways, with you giving your media contacts tips on newsworthy events and stories that have nothing to do with you or your clients. Just a win for them. Special Guest: This week, President of PRSA-OKC Kristin Ewing, APR drops by to talk about current and upcoming events at PRSA. http://prsaokc.com/index.php Bonus Question: What's the oddest thing you have ever been asked to do for client or boss? "Too many businesses today are set up to benefit themselves and not their audience. It should be the other way around." To compete or be disruptive, business should be providing products/service in a way that benefits the client/customer first. Then, find a way to accomplish that with a profit margin (every business has to make a profit or die) and you now have a viable business model. Give them what they want, how they want it! Learn the lessons of old-school cable companies and cell phone providers. Don't force your customer to do business the way you want, but in a way they want. Build brand loyalty and repeat business through your attitude and structure. Develop real audience profiles and then use that information to be a better business option. Switch the way you think, serving your audience first, to benefit you (more) later. Think long-term, not short. It's harder up front, but so much better and more stable in the long term. It's simply a better way to do business. Bonus Question: What TV shows, publications, websites, podcast and video shows do you follow for business advice? For Pritch, industry publications like PRSA and Ad Week. For Kyle, Shark Tank, The Profit and Gary V. He's also a big fan of The Pursuit by Kelsey Humphreys on YouTube. Employee communications have always been an HR issue, but why? PR and marketing professionals are better equipped to drive internal employee communications. Employees need to know the company mission, position, offers and value statement. Employees are your greatest ambassadors. Word-of-mouth from employees has huge value in-person, online and via social media. A company stands for what the employees stand for. The keys are building relationships and engagement. Can you mid-level employees do a better job with internal communications? Probably so. Your PR team can help. Often, companies with rapid growth (existing and startups) lose their effectiveness due to a lack of internal communication structure. Like our Golding Group partner Felicite Moorman says: "Death By Success" from rapid growth. The lack of employee communications is as detrimental as gaps in internal structure, inventory or cash flow. Special guest Alyssa Murphy drops by to discuss AMA-OKC, our local chapter of the American Marketing Association. It's that time in the new year when we set resolutions for ourselves. In business, we set goals to track our successes (or lack thereof). This allows a business to do more of what works and less of what doesn't. Just because your business is profitable, doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement. Side Note: Almost no one is doing 5-year strategic plans anymore. Business moves too fast today. Prepare a 12-18 month plan with a 36-month max. When setting goals, never start with tactics (the fun stuff). Instead, use these 3 concepts for setting the proper goals. Obtainable: Set your goals high, but not so high you cannot obtain them. Set an additional “stretch” goal to push yourself but in a realistic way. Factors within and outside your business will affect you throughout the year. Don't just set goals against your primary competition, but all discretionary spending options. Measureable: According to Pritch, measurement is the most important part. If you can't quantify it via math, it's not measurable. You have to start somewhere (X) and end the year somewhere else (+/-X). Goals need to be connected to audience and market factors such as share percentage, scope, etc. Specific: You can't measure something if you don't set a specific goal. "More Sales" is not specific, but "increase sales by X% or $X" is. The other aspect of being specific is setting a timeline and budget. What do you want to accomplish, when and how much will you spend? Only do those things that have positive ROI. You need to be profitable to survive. Once you have taken these three steps, the strategy and tactics will be obvious. Now, divide up your set budget based on impact, priority, etc. then execute! Bonus question: On a personal note, what's your New Years Resolution? Subscribe to the NeoMarketing podcast on iTunes and videos on YouTube. In today's market, speed is essential. Waiting for the perfect scenario to launch your blog, vlog, podcast or startup is a huge mistake. Ideas are great, but execution is the key to success. Consistent delivery of information is more valuable than a flawless launch. There is no "perfect" time for anything. Even Gary V. and Casey Neistat had to learn as they worked. Technology is making it possible to bring the best ideas to reality fast. We started the #NeoMarketing podcast with no real idea what would happen or when. With only 20 episodes posted, the connections and interactions have been amazing. Keep watching and asking questions. Authenticity is an ever-increasing element of modern marketing. Advertisers are using community content and social causes to draw attention, such as the recent anti-bullying ads from Burger King, but is it authentic concern or a disguised sales pitch? Did the ad connect with the right audience as intended? Is it authentic to the BK brand? Why or why not? So what can BK do to prove the authenticity of a campaign like this? By sharing background, decision making process, planning and collaborators. The Golding Group partners discuss how to stay authentic to your brand by being open, transparent and honest about the good and bad. Show the "warts and all" as the saying goes. Don't forget, you can't fake the funk. The public sees through deception and dirty tricks. Bonus: Pritch is apparently afraid of the Burger King and finds the TV character to be a bully of sorts.
