Send us a textDeath has a way of revealing who we truly are. In this captivating episode of Steps to the Stage, we dive deep into one of the most intriguing productions in the Three on the Edge Festival – "Breathing Corpses" by British playwright Laura Wade.Director Lauren Bell and actors John Nisbet and Amanda Flanagan take us behind the scenes of this darkly comedic play that unfolds in reverse chronological order. Beginning with a hotel maid discovering a dead body, the narrative moves backward through interconnected scenes that reveal how death impacts various characters in profound, absurd, and unexpectedly funny ways. What makes this production particularly fascinating is the creative team's approach to Wade's distinctively British dialogue. The script captures realistic speech patterns – complete with interruptions, false starts, and natural rhythms – creating challenges for the actors but resulting in an authenticity rarely seen on stage. The cast shares how they've navigated these complexities while maintaining the delicate balance between humor and heartbreak that defines the play."Every time the play tries to go deep," Bell explains, "something happens to bring it right back up." This tonal rollercoaster mirrors real life, where even in our darkest moments, absurdity and laughter often break through. The production doesn't shy away from heavy themes – including domestic violence and suicide – but presents them through a lens of human complexity rather than melodrama.Perfect for the intimate setting of 7th Street Community Theatre, this stripped-back production focuses on the emotional journeys of its characters rather than elaborate staging. As Nisbet notes, without being "encumbered with props or entrances and exits," the actors can fully immerse themselves in the psychological depth of their roles.Catch "Breathing Corpses" on May 8th, 10th, 16th, with matinees on May 18th and 24th. This 80-minute exploration of mortality and human connection promises to spark conversation long after the final blackout – you may even want to see it twice to catch all the connections you missed the first time around.Find STTS:Steps To The Stage (@stepstothestage) | InstagramFacebookSteps To The Stage (buzzsprout.com)Steps To The Stage - YouTubePlease follow on your favorite podcast platform and we appreciate 5 Star ratings and positive reviews!

Katherine Parkinson is best known as an actress – she won a BAFTA playing Jen in The IT Crowd and warm praise for her performance on stage in Laura Wade’s play Home, I’m Darling. But she has also written a play, Sitting, an interwoven set of three monologues first performed at the Edinburgh Festival and now on BBC4 as part of BBC Lights Up. She talks to John about performing in the play for the first time. Louise Kennedy discusses her new collection of short stories, The End of the World is a Cul de Sac, which focus on the rugged landscapes and tough characters of north-west Ireland, just south of the border, where she lives. Secrets, lies, cruelty and history lie at the heart of many of the 15 stories, infused with the country’s folklore and politics. In this episode, Laura Wade talks about the poem that has been a friend to her – 'Ashes of Life' by Edna St. Vincent Millay. We are very grateful to Laura for allowing us to share this conversation with you. Laura visited The Poetry Exchange in London. She is in conversation with The Poetry Exchange team members, Michael Shaeffer and Fiona Bennett. Laura Wade is an Olivier award winning playwright and screenwriter. Her National Theatre play HOME, I'M DARLING premiered at Theatr Clwyd in 2018 before playing at the National, where it received rave reviews. HOME, I'M DARLING won the award for Best New Comedy at the 2019 Oliviers. Laura's screenplay THE RIOT CLUB, an adaptation of her acclaimed 2010 stage play POSH, opened in cinemas on September 2014. The film is directed by Lone Scherfig and stars Max Irons, Sam Claflin and Douglas Booth. Laura has also adapted Sarah Waters' TIPPING THE VELVET for the stage and in 2018, Laura adapted Jane Austen's unfinished novel THE WATSONS for the stage for Chichester Festival Theatre. You can find out more about Edna St. Vincent Millay and read more of her poetry at the Poetry Foundation: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/edna-st-vincent-millay Ashes of Life is read by Laura at the beginning of the conversation, with the gift reading of the poem by Fiona Bennett. ***** Ashes of Life By Edna St. Vincent Millay Love has gone and left me and the days are all alike; Eat I must, and sleep I will, — and would that night were here! But ah! — to lie awake and hear the slow hours strike! Would that it were day again! — with twilight near! Love has gone and left me and I don't know what to do; This or that or what you will is all the same to me; But all the things that I begin I leave before I'm through, — There's little use in anything as far as I can see. Love has gone and left me, — and the neighbors knock and borrow, And life goes on forever like the gnawing of a mouse, — And to-morrow and to-morrow and to-morrow and to-morrow There's this little street and this little house.
In this episode, we had one of our favorite guests, Laura Wade who, with her partner and their dog, Tesla, is currently living a traveling quarantined life in their van. We look at our present world situation, and the many issues that are being raised by this turn of events. There are many different exercises we can practice to help support ourselves through this time of change and transition, and Laura guides us through one of her favorites. We all concluded that life is an incredible learning experience, if we are able to see it from that perspective. This is a must listen! Contact Laura Here! Want more of Bill K & Gina Faye? Antony Gormley talks to Tom Sutcliffe about his forthcoming major show at the Royal Academy. The sculptor returns to his enduring interest in the inner dark space of the body and the body’s relation to its surroundings. As well as the famous casts of this own figure, seawater and clay fill one gallery, evoking the depths from which life emerged. The award-winning playwright Laura Wade discusses her revolutionary adaptation of Jane Austen. Her new play, The Watsons, is based on Austen’s unfinished novel, and shows what happens when characters threaten to break free from the original work and take control of the drama. The conductor Charles Hazlewood celebrates the rebellious side of classical music – minimalism. Minimalists in the 20th century, like Steve Reich and Terry Riley, flouted conventions and sought to redraw musical boundaries. But the music was also a direct response to the political and social fervour of the 1960s and 70s. One of the most creative and hedonistic periods of British culture was the nineties: the era of Cool Britannia, born in Thatcher’s Britain and flaunted by Tony Blair. The writer Daniel Rachel looks back at how art, comedy, fashion, film, football and music came together in a flowering of national self-confidence, and what broke it apart. Producers: Katy Hickman and Hannah Sander

Laura Wade's plays return to formal inventiveness with wit and imagination. This inventiveness is counterpointed by an insistent fascination with England as it struggles to define itself in the face of accelerating redundancy. This counterpoint has led to be one of the most exciting bodies of work in contemporary playwriting.

One of the most enjoyable periods in my working career was the five years I spent between 2001 and 2006 working as the Writers’ Tutor at the Royal Court Theatre’s Young Writers Programme…It is always fascinating to ask myself if I had noticed anything in the spirit of say Jack Thorne, for example, or Mike Bartlett, Laura Wade or Chloe Moss that even in their early career marked them out as likely to succeed. With the case of Lucy Prebble my answer is unequivocal. Some writers have a spark of vitality about them from the start that marks them out as exceptional.
