Lucy Prebble, the BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Emmy award-winning writer behind HBO's drama Succession, talks about her play, The Effect.
Shortland Street has been running for an impressive 32 years, and Jayden Daniels played one of the most popular characters in its entire run. After graduating from Toi Whakaari in 2014 Daniels picked up the role of Curtis in 2015, using that role as a stepping stone to enter the screen industry proper. He starred as Gabriel in the 2023 film Evil Dead Rise, and Cyril in Whina, the biopic of Dame Whina Cooper. Daniels' is now making the switch from screen to stage, going back to his roots and theatre training with Auckland Theatre Company's production of The Effect. The play follows two people who meet during a clinical drug trial and fall in love, asking the question of whether the love is real or just a side effect of the medication, written by multi-award winner Lucy Prebble. “There's love, there's sorrow,” Daniels told Newstalk ZB's Jack Tame. “She writes it way better than I'm explaining it now.” A majority of Daniels' training was theatrical training at drama school, but since he's been working on screen since his graduation there's been a bit of an adjustment. “The whole time I've been trying to pull down, be smaller and more subtle,” he said. “If I'm on screen, I can drop right down and talk to you like this,” Daniels lowered his voice in example. “Whereas on stage I'm having to project. Even if I'm talking to you close, I have to be big and loud.” “That's been a challenge for me.” Daniels has worked in both mediums, and while he used to think he had a preference, he's recently discovered that theatre has a lot to teach him. The techniques he can rely on when acting for camera aren't applicable to stage performances, as audiences can't hear softspoken voices or see the minute expressions on actors' faces. And while he doesn't prefer one over the other, he told Tame that there are benefits to working in theatre. “You can take more risks in theatre. You're rehearsing for a very long time, which is a luxury in acting, especially on screen.” “I feel like I put a lot of pressure on the product on screen because you get there, you don't have long to shoot the scene and its done. Whereas here you can try this, it didn't work, I'll just throw it to the complete other end.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Chris and Andy talk about a New Yorker profile of 'Succession' writer Lucy Prebble in which she wonders whether it's better to create TV that "feels like having a bath" instead of shows with complicated plotlines that require the viewer to follow closely (1:00). Then they talk about the fourth episode of 'Shogun' (26:44) and the new Netflix show 'The Gentlemen,' which feels just like the "gourmet cheeseburger" that chief content officer Bela Bajaria once described (44:55). Welcome to Part II of this special episode with Lucy Prebble, executive producer and writer from the hit tv show Succession. If you're curious about why you both loved and hated Logan, why Shiv was as deeply flawed as her brothers and why a bromance like Tom and Greg's made us feel all kinds of things, then hit play because all those questions and more will be answered. As Lucy and Damon take a deep dive into the world of Waystar Royco and Succession, Lucy shares openly to what lengths deeply researched real world stories were used to create this fictional company, goes on to explain that Logan Roy's media mogul character was the only archetype in the show, and then takes us inside the writer's room that leaned on the power of constraint to tell this story for the ages in the most Succession-y way possible, and yes, Succession-y is a word. As hard as it was to watch at times, as the dark side of the world of work was broadcast into our living rooms, this television show that is, at it's core, about love and power - the need for it, the absence of it, and the lengths people will go to get it and then keep it - can be received as a gift to us all in the way it helps us find clarity on the types of companies and company cultures that we want to create and be part of.If you haven't already listened to Part I, where we learned about Lucy's background as a playwright in London's West End, her time as a TV Showrunner and how she nearly didn't accept the offer to work on Succession, you can - check it out here.Show notes: If you love our Pop Culture First episodes, be sure to check out this joyous conversation between Damon, Priya Parker and Gary Ware about a very different workplace run by, the legend himself, Ted Lasso.Damon also mentioned his recent conversation with Jamila Rizvi on how to make work actually work for women. Renowned for tackling big themes on stage, Lucy Prebble made her name as a playwright in her mid-twenties when she wrote the hugely successful Enron. The play, which premiered in 2009 and explored the collapse of the American energy corporation eight years earlier, transferred to the West End and also played on Broadway. In 2019 she premiered A Very Expensive Poison which dramatized the assassination in London of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko. Lucy Prebble has also written for television, she devised and wrote the black comedy series I Hate Suzie with its star Billie Piper. She was also one of the writers of the Emmy, Golden Globes and BAFTA winning Succession, about the ageing media mogul deciding if and how to hand control of his corporate empire to his children. In conversation with John Wilson, Lucy recalls how an early job as an assistant to Nicholas Hytner in his first year as Director of the National Theatre helped her to begin her career as a writer. She reveals how Billy Bragg's song Waiting For The Great Leap Forwards is a continued inspiration in her work as a playwright and the influence that Bob Fosse's 1979 film All That Jazz had on her TV series I Hate Suzie. She also discusses being part of the team that wrote the hit TV series Succession and what effect the experience has had on her and her work. Producer: Edwina Pitman

Lucy Prebble, acclaimed playwright and Succession screenwriter, talks to Tom about the return of I Hate Suzie Too, her TV collaboration with Billie Piper about a B-list celebrity making a reality TV comeback, following an intimate phone hacking scandal. Immersive and interactive exhibitions, performances and ‘experiences' are everywhere, from the Frida Kahlo exhibition at the Reel Store in Coventry to a Peaky Blinders experience in London. Tom is joined by author Laurence Scott and art critic Rachel Campbell-Johnson to ask if we've reached peak immersion. After having its funding slashed and being told it must move out of London, where does the English National Opera go from here? Manchester has been mooted, although there are reports that the Arts Council may be about to grant the ENO a reprieve. The company's chief executive Stuart Murphy will give us an update, and we'll hear from Richard Mantle, chief executive of Leeds-based Opera North, which tours to cities including Greater Manchester. And Manchester-based opera singer Soraya Mafi, who has performed with ENO, explains what the move might mean to her. I am BEYOND EXCITED that we are joined by my OG Idol, Billie Piper, who made the first album I ever bought - fun fact! Believe it or not, Billie first burst into our lives 25 years ago - so this is technically the Silver Jubilee of Queen Billie, which should be a national holiday, right? As a 15 year old popstar, Billie became the youngest person ever to go straight to number one with the eternal bop, Because We Want To before going on to land two more number one singles with Girlfriend and Day & Night. How her hit, Honey 2 The Bee wasn't ever a number one is still an injustice that haunts me until this day. But here we are… Billie then turned to acting with the comeback of Doctor Who starring as the Doctor's assistant, Rose Tyler opposite Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant and The Secret Diary of A Call Girl. Billie even continued to set records with her new career path by winning all six of the possible best stage actress awards, including an Olivier award, for her stage debut in Yerma. Now Billie is back with the second season of the BAFTA nominated TV show, I Hate Suzie, which she co-created with Succession writer, Lucy Prebble. If you haven't watched the first season of the show, it follows the former child star, Suzie Pickles as her life implodes when private images of her leak online. And let me tell you RIGHT NOW, the second season is just as good as the first with more twists and turns for our anti-hero, Suzie. I Hate Suzie Too is available on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW from 20 December.Today Billie joins us to talk about being a horny dancer (same here!) - tis the season, after all - and how exploring anxiety and mental health on I Hate Suzie has impacted her own well being. Billie also opens up about how seeing her 14 year old son grow up has made her reflect further on her own teenage stardom and the advice she wishes she could go back and give her popstar self. She also shares some great words about balance and pressure which I think we all need to hear and will relate to, and about finding a new level of confidence turning 40 this year. Billie Piper is still THE coolest person on the planet in my mind, so I hope you love this chat just as much as me as it really shows just how this icon has managed to stay relevant for a quarter of a century across so many disciplines. If you have missed any of the episodes of Reign Season six go check them out now - we've been joined by some truly inspiring people from Chloe Grace Moretz to Lena Dunham. Cat English has written four novels, with the first about to release for general sales in February. This first book, “Briefly Yours”, is a very graphic biography of the life story of a call girl in Manchester who uses a lot of her profits to run a cat rescue organization. This interview is NSFW and very frank in discussions around descriptions of sex, brothels, and how people mistreat animals – with a hopeful note on what anyone can do to help TNR feral cats. … Continue...Episode 134 – Interview with Cat English

*NO SPOILERS* Welcome to a new kind of episode on Pop Fiction Women where we take you behind the scenes on our thought process for picking content and where we try to convince each other (and our listeners) to watch a show we love. ** I Hate Suzie. After a brief summary of the show, Kate leads with her strongest point: that Phoebe Waller Bridge is a superfan of I Hate Suzie and that there are endless comparisons between it and Fleabag! As if that wasn’t already enough, Kate points out that the show is a deeply personal labor of love co-created by two best friend writing teams, is interestingly structured around the stages of grief, and has a cleverly aggressive title for a reason. (03:05) ** Complicated Woman: Suzie Pickles. Kate believes you’ll want to watch this show because of Suzie and Billie Piper’s performance. She’s insecure, full of self-loathing, reactive, dramatic, blunt, anxious, angry, messy, engages in self-sabotage, but is also a loving mother of a deaf child, a friend, a wife, a lover, a sister, a daughter. She’s vulnerable and raw and definitely complicated. (08:20) ** Scenes and Themes. If Suzie isn’t enough to convince you, you'll also want to watch for its nuanced perspective on many interesting themes: midlife identity crisis, female desire, infidelity, mommy & daddy issues, and female friendship. (13:13) ** What She Said: Billie Piper & Lucy Prebble. A double whammy of talent, our what she said for I Hate Suzie allows us both to deep dive into two creative, complicated and insightful friends, collaborators and creators. And of course we relate it to ourselves! (29:08) Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @popfictionwomen and on Twitter @pop_women. Prebble is Co-Executive Producer and writer on the BAFTA, Golden Globe and EMMY award winning HBO drama Succession. She was the creator of the TV series Secret Diary of a Call Girl. She wrote the political thriller A Very Expensive Poison (Old Vic), and before that The Effect (National Theatre), which is a study of love and neuroscience, as well as the hugely successful drama Enron, about corporate fraud, which transferred to the West End and Broadway after sell-out runs at both the Royal Court and Chichester Festival Theatre. Prebble's latest TV show, I Hate Suzie, sees Billie Piper star as a celebrity who has her life upended when her phone is hacked and pictures of her emerge in an extremely compromising position. The gang is back together on this week's Backstage, as Claire returns from sunning it up on the coast! And the excitement doesn't stop there - Billie Piper and Lucy Prebble's new Sky Atlantic show I Hate Suzie is very, very good. Claire chats with Daniel Ings, who plays Suzie's husband Cob, about the project. Less exciting, however, is Disney+'s new family film The One And Only Ivan. It's got a stellar cast, and some great CGI animals, but it might even be too boring for some of your kids, let alone the grown-ups!Not one, but two teen movies for you this week. Babyteeth is out in cinemas now, and Chemical Hearts is on Amazon Prime. One's great - the other, not so much. And it's the devil himself - or is it? Netflix's Lucifer is back for part one of its fifth season, but something isn't quite right with the Hellish prince. Something also isn't quite right with the acting.Plus, Katie got to speak to actual living legend, Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, about his new art project, and there's a hint of some new music on the way...Get in touch via email. Writer Lucy Prebble (Succession, Enron) celebrates Nora Ephron and Rob Reiner's deceptively effortless romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally and the lessons it teaches about writing, and life. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Lucy Prebble’s play A Very Expensive Poison opened last week at the Old Vic in London. It tells the story of the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko in 2006 with a treatment ranging from the high theatricality of song, dance and puppetry to simple direct address to the audience - and has a love story at its core. Lucy Prebble joins Front Row to talk about putting truth on stage. Mark Strong and Daniel Mays star in new Sky One drama Temple, set in a disused underground station being used as a covert hospital to treat criminals and CEOs of massive companies who need to keep their health a secret. David Butcher of the Radio Times reviews. Lynda Clarke has been shortlisted for the BBC National Short Story Award with Ghillie’s Mum. The writer discusses her story which is about a shape shifting mother whose animal forms delight her son but horrify the wider world . The story is broadcast on Radio 4 at 1530 on Friday 13 September and the winner of the BBC NSSA is announced on Front Row on 1 October. Lope de Vega wrote about 500 plays but there can’t be many writers with more plays to their name than years to their age. Alan Ayckbourn can claim that honour: he’s 80 and last night his 83rd play opened, like so many of his previous dramas, in Scarborough. Birthdays Past, Birthdays Present has all the deft stagecraft we expect from the playwright; it opens on the day of Micky’s 80th birthday party and works backwards to the birthdays of his wife, his son and daughter. What happens offstage is as important as what the audience sees. This is a family drama about rumour, reputation and what really happened. So, a play for our times. Nick Ahad, drama critic for the Yorkshire Post, reviews the production. Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Hilary Dunn
Lucy Prebble discusses her acclaimed play Enron, which dramatised the spectacular rise and criminal fall of a huge American corporation built on bad debt and dodgy hedge funds. She explains how seeing The Last Days Of Judas Iscariot, a 2008 play by Stephen Adly Guigis, helped fire her theatrical imagination, and offers an exclusive preview her next play A Very Expensive Poison, about the assassination of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006, which will premiere at the Old Vic in August. Lucy also discusses her work as a writer and producer on the brilliant HBO drama series Succession, starring Brian Cox as Logan Roy, an ageing media baron who struggling to decide which of his hand over children should inherit his empire. I met Lucy here in Bali and I was amazed at how present and intuitive she is. As she could identify me very quickly as a doer, and she used to be a lot in the doing side of things with her marketing agency, we discussed also the importance of simply being. Here are the questions I asked: 1- Her story and background as a high-achiever 2- What's the risk of being too much in doing? 3- When did she realise the importance of being? 4- Techniques to be more established in BEING

One of the most enjoyable periods in my working career was the five years I spent between 2001 and 2006 working as the Writers’ Tutor at the Royal Court Theatre’s Young Writers Programme…It is always fascinating to ask myself if I had noticed anything in the spirit of say Jack Thorne, for example, or Mike Bartlett, Laura Wade or Chloe Moss that even in their early career marked them out as likely to succeed. With the case of Lucy Prebble my answer is unequivocal. Some writers have a spark of vitality about them from the start that marks them out as exceptional.
