Our guest today is Sarah Glassmeyer, Director of Data Curation at LegalTechnology Hub. Sarah has worked in various roles as a problem-solver in the legal community. For several years, she was a law librarian at universities around the US. Since then, she has worked as Director of Content Development at the Center for Computer Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI), as a research fellow at Harvard's Library Innovation Lab and the Berkman Center for Internet and Society, as project manager and legal counsel for the ABA Center for Innovation and Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services, and as a Legal Tech Curator at Reynen Court Inc. At the time we recorded this episode, Sarah was Senior Solutions Analyst at LegalTechnology Hub, but her role has recently changed to Director of Data Curation. In this position, she oversees the content in the LegalTechnology Hub directory. Additionally, Sarah has received numerous accolades and honors. She was part of the inaugural class of the Fastcase 50, was named an ABA Legal Rebel, and has earned a “le Hackie” award from the Legal Hackers organization. In our discussion, Sarah talks about making "lucky jumps" in her career, how being a law librarian has changed over time, her current work at LegalTechnology Hub, and what excites her the most in legal tech.
In this episode, we meet with Inna Ptitsyna from Kyiv, Ukraine. Inna Ptitsyna is Product Communications Manager at Lawrina. With Inna, we explore the importance of access to legal information. Legal information is essential for individuals to understand their rights and obligations under the law, but not everyone has equal access to this information. We begin by discussing the challenges that people face in accessing legal information, including the cost of legal services and the complexity of legal language. We also examine the impact that this lack of access can have on individuals. We continue exploring how different technological solutions can help Access the Law, also beyond different jurisdictions and Inna tells us the story of Lawrina and how it all began for their team. Lawrina is really ambitious in content creation and Inna explains what kind of processes they have developed to keep updated and how the members of the lawyer directory can participate in the work. Since Lawrina's story began in Ukraine and Inna and some of her team members work from Kyiv, we also talk about the Russia's massive assault against independent Ukraine. We examine if legal design and legal tech can play a role in the reconstruction and healing of Ukrainian society. And since many of us are looking for ways to help Ukraine and Ukrainian people, we ask Inna what would be the best ways to do this. --- Inna Ptitsyna is Product Communications Manager at Lawrina. She has a law degree and great expertise in legal innovations. Along with the work for Lawrina, Inna is a part of the international community of Legal Hackers, where she gives presentations about the importance of PR and marketing for lawyers. At Lawrina, Inna is responsible for setting out a strategic and comprehensive communications plan, delivering it, and ensuring that a coherent message runs through all product communications, including marketing activities.
On this episode, Hunter spoke with Jason Tashea to discuss the exciting intersection of tech and the legal system. As the Director and Co-Founder of the Georgetown Judicial Innovation Fellowship, Jason is constantly thinking about ways to ethically integrate technology into the legal world. As an institution predicated on tradition, precedent, and intentionally inefficient legal protections, the legal profession has been incredibly slow to adopt the forward thinking, efficiency mindset so prevalent in the tech world. It is the juxtaposition of the two that sits at the center of today's conversation. How do we ensure that the efficiency goals of tech don't trample the rights of others? How do we make sure that the vitally necessary data collection practices are implemented safely without privacy violation? All these questions and more are explored in this episode! On today’s show we welcome Amy Wan, an attorney who specializes in real estate fund syndication for entrepreneurs. Amy is based in Los Angeles, where she runs her company Bootstrap Legal. The underlying goal of the company is to democratize access to legal council by decreasing the amount of billable hours for drafting legal documents. Amy had not intended on going into law and, in fact, she was studying biology towards being a doctor or pharmacist. After going through the motions of her degree she eventually landed in USC Law School studying human rights law and later international trade law. Amy then moved to California with her husband and found a job at Patch of Land. It was here that she became interested in the idea of legal access democratization, something she would draw from with her own company. Amy’s story is both one that can inspire an individual pursuit and is also full of great illuminations on the possibilities for the future of legal work. Tune in to hear all about it! Key Points From This Episode: Why trading your time for your money is not for everyone. The legal profession’s opposition to efficiency. Different types of fund syndication. Investment crowdfunding as an online syndication and its returns. What exactly is an accredited investor and their role. Bootstrap legal and the democratization of legal aid. Just how inefficient the standard legal turnaround is on drafted documents. How Amy’s company makes the system work more efficiently. The money and time that this can save a client. Challenges that Amy faced in starting her own business. Amy’s suggested timeline for prospective capital raising. Property value, projected goals and likely capital amounts. And much more! Legal Hackers may sound deviant, but in reality they are a group of lawyers, academics, and tech nerds that are exploring technology solutions to the most relevant legal issues. In this report from On The Road, host Jonathan Askin talks to Tony Lai and Mark Potkewitz about the legal hackers movement including how it helps with access to justice and the potential of open data. They also discuss the unexpected allies they’ve found outside of the hacker community that have helped with collaboration and sponsorship, one of these allies being the government itself. Tony Lai is a lawyer, entrepreneur, and evangelist for processes and systems that support openness and innovation, engagement, and sharing. Mark Potkewitz is a legal technology fellow at Brooklyn Law School and the communications director at the Foundation for Fund Governance.
