Rerun summer continues with another past guest from way back in 2022—lettering designer extraordinaire and Portland flower fan Kyle Letendre joins Sean to talk Minnesota's missing lakes, misguided entrepreneurial spirit, and rebrands that aren't quite making the grade. We're filling in the pixels in that JPEG manually in person while we get to the bottom of a question that's been on everyone's mind: what's Sean's favorite food color?Kyle most recently did artwork for TypeCon 2024's identity, which you can see on the TypeCon website.Not-so-coincidentally enough, the day this episode is re-released (Thursday, July 25, 2024) Fontroversy's Lena Hall and I will be appearing at TypeCon's Education Forum to present about the type education side of how Fontroversy came to be—it's going to be a real kick, and if you're going to be attending TypeCon, check out the EdForum schedule page on TypeCon's website for scheduling information. Lizy and Travis, along with fellow co-founder James Edmundson of Ohno Type Co., co-founded Future Fonts, where you can get experimental typefaces while they're still in development and help support their creators through the process! Book Vs. Movie: Kinky BootsThe True Story Behind the 2005 Movie & 2013 Broadway Musical (and the 2019 movie!)The “Month of Musicals” concludes with Kinky Boots, the true story of a footwear company in Earls Barton, North Hamptonshire, UK--WJ Brooks. The factory was in Steve Pateman's family for decades when in the 1990s, they started losing money to the cheaper, faster competition. Pateman appeared on BBC's Trouble at the Top documentary showing how his company switched to creating boots for transvestites who needed more security when they stood in high heels. The collection expanded to “kink wear,” dubbed “Kinky Boots” by the BBC producers, and the story took off. In 2005, director Julian Jarrold and writers Geoff Deane and Tim Firth brought the story to life (unfortunately, the factory had to close in 2000.) Joel Edgerton plays Charlie Price (the Steve Patemen substitute), and Chiwetel Ejiofor's Lola is an amalgam of several drag queens that were customers of WJ Brooks's “Divine, Provider, and Lady Provider” brands. The film has an amazing soundtrack, and Ejiofor was nominated for a Golden Globe. Harvey Fierstein wrote the book for the musical with legendary talent Cyndi Lauper creating the music and lyrics before its debut in Chicago in 2013. The maiden voyage of a cruise ship starring a boatload of musical theater stars — like Tony Award-winners Laura Benanti, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming and Lena Hall — will set sail next spring. The Broadway Cruise — heading roundtrip from New York City to Bermuda, from March 31-April 5, 2023 — will also feature Tony nominees Joshua Henry, Taylor Louderman and Jeremy Jordan, as well as Broadway favorites Randy Rainbow and Sierra Boggess. Producers promise “intimate and grand scale shows and cabarets from Broadway's coolest talent” as well as “tips and techniques from some of the best and brightest creative talent working today.” Tony-nominated scenic designer David Korins will discuss his creative process when designing settings for the stage and Tony-nominated choreographer Kelly Devine will discuss the art of the dance. Chris Jahnke will serve as music director. The cruise will borrow the Norwegian Gem, which accommodates 2,000 people. Cabin prices begin at $1,165 per person. The trip was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. Cruise ships were an early source of outbreaks at the start of the pandemic. The CDC issued a no-sail order in March 2020, prompting a standstill that ended in June 2021 as cruise ships began to leave U.S. ports with new health and safety requirements. All guests 12 and over — and all artists and crew — aboard The Broadway Cruise are required to be fully vaccinated and present proof of vaccination to board. In the wake of the 2020 election, one meme, which had originated in the spring of 2019, flooded the most ardently MAGA corners of the internet. It featured an image of Soviet Dictator Joseph Stalin and the following quote. "The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything." To the MAGA world, Stalin's words echoed eerily into the present. Like Stalin, the imposter president Joe Biden was, naturally, a Marxist bent on reconstituting America as a Communist hellscape in which Christianity was illegal and worship of the state was mandatory. But the problem with the meme is that the quote is fabricated. Stalin never said it. In part three, our final episode of the first half of season 2, we look at how Stalin would use deception to take control of the Soviet Union and how his use of disinformation helped him tighten his group, reshape Russian foreign policy, and infect the American imagination for decades to come. John is on Twitter @ProbablyRealJB Mike on Twitter @the_mikestir Jess on Twitter @jayarekay_ Sources for this episode include: Georgiy Kent - "How fake news helped hide Soviet genocide in Ukraine" EJ Montini - "Arizona Republican lawmakers endorse Joseph Stalin's disinformation strategy" Orlando Figes - "The Cult of Lenin" The outro music is a cover of Ruled by Secrecy by Muse, performed by Lena Hall.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Ariel Bellvalaire over Zoom video! From quiet beginnings comes one of pop rock's most promising up-and-coming guitarists.Ariel Bellvalaire hails from the small town of Windsor, CT, though her music has captured the attention of music lovers around the globe. Often described by fans as “Avril Lavigne with a hint of Van Halen,” Bellvalaire has made a name for herself by creating original music with a rock twist and her signature solos. The young artist made her on-stage debut in 2014, when she performed on Broadway alongside Tony winners Lena Hall and Robin de Jesús in the Dearly Beloved Prince tribute show in New York City. Bellvalaire moved to Los Angeles the following year and soon after booked lead roles playing guitar in national campaigns and commercials for GMC, KIA, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Bellvalaire has spent the last several years touring around the world. Her skills have landed her spots with Nik West, “I Am King” – The Michael Jackson Experience, Guns N' Roses tribute band Paradise Kitty, and more. Q&A with Snowpiercer actor Lena Hall. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. Set more than seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, this series centres on the remaining people, who inhabit a gigantic, perpetually-moving train that circles the globe.
If ever there was an episode about a deep love for both Wall-E & Maximus (the horse from "Tangled"), this is the one. Join Tony Award-winner Lena Hall ("Hedwig and the Angry Inch," "Kinky Boots," TNT's "Snowpiercer") as she reminisces about her love of Disney growing up--from going to Disneyland as a kid and seeing Captain EO and "It's a Small World," to how as a child she would sing along to "The Little Mermaid" and the "big one" that is "Beauty and the Beast" (and wanting to be Snow White so badly). This rocker credits getting her singing chops to signing along to Disney movies as from "Kiss the Girl" to "Aladdin" and the entire soundtrack of "The Lion King," and loving the music and ballet sequences from "Fantasia." Lena recalls her first time going to Walt Disney World while on tour with "Cats," and also shares a very sordid story from a trip to Pleasure Island while on tour with "Annie Get Your Gun." Besides her love of Ursula, Sebastian, Timon & Pumbaa, and "The Nightmare Before Christmas,". Lena digs in and talks about her love of the flawed Disney characters and just how complex they are. She shares a very romantic story about watching "Wall-E "with her husband (then boyfriend) in a little cabin together, as well as her time in "Tarzan" on Broadway and the challenges she faced during that part of her life--and finding her purpose. Play along with "The Origin of Love for Disney" game in which Lena is quizzed on how the Broadway Hedwigs relate to Disney, and listen as she slays the game "Rock Stars do Disney." From the non-stop nature of a Broadway performer's life, to the slower pace of TV, this Tony Award winner opens up about her struggles as an artist during the pandemic, and the importance of stopping to “look back and realize how far you have come” on your way to your goals. Lena Hall is a Tony Award winner and Grammy nominee known for her phenomenal performance of Yitzhak in the 2014 Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Following her award winning run, she toured North America with Josh Groban on his Stages tour. Lena’s slew of Broadway credits include 42nd Street, Tarzan, and Cats, as well as originating the role of Nicola in the Tony-winning musical Kinky Boots. She is a recording artist, with 2 albums and 12 EP’s to her name, and numerous TV and film credits including Girls, BoJack Horseman, Sex and the City, and All My Children. Lena can now be seen as Miss Audrey in Snowpiercer on TNT. Currently in Canada quarantining and filming season 3 of Snowpiercer, Lena opens up about how her “light” shooting schedule leads to nostalgia for the workhorse nature of being a Broadway performer. She speaks candidly about the impact the pandemic has had on her creative mind and vision; and shares how she has struggled with the stress, the anxiety, and the not knowing, while taking solace in the knowledge that “we are all in the same boat”. Lena also takes a look back at her career and chronicles how tonsil problems from hell led to a chance to re-start, re-learn, and explore new parts of her voice. Rebecca Naomi Jones is an actress and a singer who made her Broadway debut in 2008 when Passing Strange transferred from it’s Off-Broadway run. She went on to create the role of Whatshername in the Green Day Rock Opera American Idiot, which opened on Broadway in 2010. In 2012 Rebecca played the Narrator in Manhattan Theatre Club's Off-Broadway musical Murder Ballad, for which she received a Lucille Lortel Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress. Her other Broadway credits include replacing Lena Hall as Yitzhak in Hedwig and the Angry Inch in 2015, a starring role in Significant Other in 2017, and Laurey Williams in Daniel Fish’s revival of Oklahoma!, a role for which she earned a Drama Desk Nomination after appearing in the original production at St. Ann's Warehouse. Rebecca can currently be heard as Lolli in Bleeding Love, a brand new original musical podcast radio play on The Broadway Podcast Network. Rebecca was born in New York City to bi-racial parents, her mother Jewish, and her father African-American. Rebecca is no stranger to the New York Stage. But doesn’t mean she is immune to performance anxiety. In our conversation, Rebecca opens up about her first encounters with anxiety and panic attacks in 2015, attacks that would linger even as she was performing on stage during Hedwig and the Angry Inch. She shares that during the run of Oklahoma! she kept up a regular meditation routine so she could prepare herself “for the fear”. In this episode, we talk about: Her inner demons that come out when she is gaining recognition or awards for her work Her memory of the first time she experienced a panic attack How performing to a house full of people with the lights on during Oklahoma! tested her Her experiences practicing and performing opera with the children's choir at The Met The trial and error of recording Bleeding Love Some of the film and TV work she has done, and why she finds this work so exciting and thrilling Connect with Rebecca: IG: @onerebeccajones Twitter: @rebeccasername Listen to Bleeding Love Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents songwriter, Desmond Child. This is the show's second interview with Desmond (recorded winter 2019). Desmond discusses his latest album 'Desmond Child Live', chanteuse Lena Hall, working with Jon Bon Jovi, making KISS a chart success, times when collaborations didn't work, song doctors, the Scorpions Humanity: Hour I, working with Alice Cooper, lost confidence, Nashville, ASCAP & streaming, and much more. On working with Bon Jovi: "We had chemistry together. We had a fate that was leading us to each other." On writing the massive KISS his I Was Made For Lovin' You With Paul Stanley: "I showed up at a KISS rehearsal and during the break... at SRI there was a big grand piano up on the stage. Everybody took off and just he and I were at the piano and we wrote the song. It was a magical experience. I told him, 'do these dramatic chords over a disco beat - just four on the floor and put heavy guitars on it. He was like, 'ok, but I don't think Gene's gonna like that, but whatever." And Gene never liked it, not to this day. But It's there biggest international hit." Early Aerosmith experience: "It started out not good with Aerosmith to tell you the truth. I was forced on the band. I walk in and there's just some roadies around and I hear some kind of a loop going on backwards. Steven who's a real people pleaser, I didn't even say a word yet, says 'hey come over here - listen to what we're doing.' And so I listen to it and it was this backwards loop and he started singing, 'Crusin' For The Ladies... Cruisin' For The Ladies,' and I said, 'that's really bad.' Those were my first words to Aerosmith." On his friend's reactions to wanting to work with the Scorpions in 2006-07: "Lots of my friends and manager said, 'Oh, come on - don't work with them. They're has-beens. They do beer halls in Germany, like forget it.' I don't know, I just felt something and I believed in them... I had rules. I made Klaus go to singing lessons with Eric Vetro." On his legacy: "My music has touched billions of people all around the planet. They don't know who wrote it. They don't even know who sang it, but they know the song. So, for me, it's been very fulfilling" Get your MITCH MERCH here: https://loudtrax.com/Mitch Twitter: @mitchlafon Instagram: @mitch_lafon Subscribe to Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon for exclusive content and interviews. On this episode of the Simply Advent series, my friends Cain and Lena Hall and I all sit down and talk about what it means to live with hope in light of the past, the present and its role in the future. Hope came, but it did not appear (and still often doesn’t) as we expected it to. Cain and Lena both experienced a lot of life and heartache before they met each other. They share what it was like for them in their singleness as they both chose to live with hope and trust God with their lives and the lives of their children in seasons they never saw coming, and their journey into new hard things, but how God is meeting them in it. Hope does not mean everything is going to be perfect, but that you are never alone in it. I love this quote from Lena in this conversation: “Without Jesus, without Hope, there’s nothing. There’s a bunch of bad experiences that don’t have a reason, don’t have a purpose, and with Hope it ties it all together not perfectly, but in a way that doesn’t make it easier, but makes it where your past and the things you’ve been through don’t own you and they are just a part of you and there’s a bigger purpose.” As we walk with God, and surrender our lives to Him, we can look backwards of where God was in the hard, and how we can believe Him for the future. This tender conversation covers such vast topics of where hope has impacted our grief, our waiting, our rejoicing, and how we cling to God’s Word and the Light of His Son’s presence as we choose to “dare to hope.” I pray it meets you wherever you are. You matter. Your story matters. Hope is worth the risk. Thank you again, ZonderKids for allowing us to read a portion of Sally Lloyd Jones' Jesus Storybook Bible before each of these episodes. Lena Hall joins Tim Berglund in the studio to talk about Apache Kafka®, the various ways to run Kafka on Microsoft Azure, Kafka on Kubernetes (K8s), and some exciting events that are happening in the Kafka world. Lena shares about serving double duty as both a senior software engineer and senior cloud developer advocate for Azure Engineering, including her unique roles and responsibilities, and how she balances engineering with advocacy. From writing tech articles to her experience with fuzzing and presence on YouTube, Lena is a strong community supporter and believes in the importance of staying rooted in the world of code as an advocate, because it helps you better understand common challenges and gives you insight as an engineer trying to fix them. It’s important to ask what's good about it and how it can be improved. They also discuss Kubernetes, the benefits of running Kafka on Kubernetes, why it’s popular, and using systems that can integrate with it. With Confluent Operator, it’s faster to spin up new environments, as well as easier to support a larger number of clusters in addition to scaling and configuration changes. As the Kafka ecosystem continues to grow and progress, one of the most notable updates of all is KIP-500 involving ZooKeeper. EPISODE LINKSApache Kafka on Kubernetes – Could You?
