Gardeners trying to do right by the ecosystem often run into antiquated bylaws, covenants and restrictions that prohibit natural yards. This frustration led to the creation of Bylaws for Biodiversity, an initiative to encourage lawmakers and homeowners associations to adopt rules that protect and promote biodiversity on private and public lands. Joining me on the podcast this week to discuss the motivation behind Bylaws for Biodiversity are two of the program's advocates: Nina-Marie Lister and Lorraine Johnson. Lorraine Johnson is a Toronto-based writer, editor, community advocate and cultivation activist. Her work focuses on people and communities growing plants, ecological health, and connection to nature and to each other. Her recent series of talks entitled 'Unsettling The Garden' addresses arguments raised by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report (of Canada) and is the topic of this episode. As the report emphasizes, "Reconciliation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Canadians, from an Aboriginal perspective, also requires reconciliation with the natural world." In this discussion, Lorraine describes the many of the ways that native plant gardening and related practices help to restore our relationship with nature and encourage kinship with plants and wildlife. We heard a lot about drones at the Paris Olympics, but what about in our own backyard? In this episode, Spacing's John Lorinc tells us about a piece he wrote called Eyes in the Sky, which documents the stealthy creep of the Toronto Police Service's use of drones to keep tabs on residents. Next, author and green advocate Lorraine Johnson tells us about an open letter she co-signed urging Canadian municipalities to change their outdated bylaws which prohibit growing habit gardens and other helpful plant species in our lawns and backyards. Finaly, Ingrid Buday founded No More Noise Toronto out of frustration with the city's high-volume noise pollution, especially traffic sounds. The group advocates for new bylaws protecting residents' right to peace and quiet, and gathers its own data to make the case.
The latest episode of our mini-series on regulatory enforcement considers the impact of the UK Financial Conduct Authority's new rules that seek to prevent greenwashing. Failing to comply with the Financial Conduct Authority's (FCA) new anti-greenwashing rules could have serious consequences for financial services firms in the UK. In this episode, we summarise the main changes and tackle the most pressing questions that firms are asking right now, including: Why have these changes been introduced and how do these add to the FCA's enforcement arsenal? What areas do (and don't) the rules cover? When will the rules come into force, how will they work in practice, and how might firms feel the impact of these? How does the FCA's guidance clarify what is considered “clear, fair and not misleading”? And what difference could the changes make to firms' marketing communications? How do the FCA's changes impact firms' ongoing compliance work in relation to climate-related financial disclosures? What further amendments could the FCA introduce to make the rules more effective? Answering all these questions, and more, are Ashurst colleagues Nathan Willmott, Lorraine Johnson and Anna Varga. To listen to this – and previous episodes in this regulatory enforcement mini-series – search for “Ashurst Legal Outlook” on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. With Lorraine Johnson of Project Swallowtail and lorrainejohnson.ca Why is the concept and practice of ‘regeneration' such an important companion for ‘sustainability'? What opportunities and challenges exist for folks in urban areas who wish to restore native plants? How about in rural areas? Which questions and misconceptions about pollinators and native plants continuously arise? Lorraine Johnson has spent decades creating habitat for native pollinators, while writing numerous books on this important and joyous practice. She shares her insights, tips, and stories in this rich conversation… and gives a little love to those oft-misunderstood goldenrods! Guest: Lorraine Johnson has been writing about native plants and habitat regeneration for 30 years, in popular books such as 100 Easy-to-Grow Native Plants for Canadian Gardens; The New Ontario Naturalized Garden; Grow Wild!; and her most recent, co-authored with Sheila Colla, A Garden for the Rusty-Patched Bumblebee. Lorraine is involved in many community organizations, such as Project Swallowtail, and has served on the Boards of the North American Native Plant Society, LEAF, Wild Ones, and other organizations. Her advocacy work includes efforts to reform grass and weeds bylaws in support of biodiversity. What unites her work is the need to reconcile with nature in a healthy relationship. #NoMowMay is an international movement that has been gaining widespread popularity in the United States. Its goal is to persuade gardeners to stop mowing their grass during the month of May so that lawn weeds such as dandelions and white clover may flower and provide early spring pollen and nectar for insect pollinators. A laudable impulse, but Dr. Sheila Colla of York University and her colleagues biologist Heather Holm and native plants stalwart Lorraine Johnson have published an article in Rewilding Magazine detailing why this isn't the best means of fostering native pollinators in North America

The Chief Executive Officer of LymeDisease.org, Lorraine Johnson, JD, MBA joined me to discuss the issues she has with the report--scientific and ethical. In addition, Ms. Johnson discussed issues concerning chronic Lyme to include treatment and diagnosis--two issues that divide Lyme advocates and the CDC and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).
In this episode you will learn: • How to help cure Lyme Disease by adding your data to the My Lyme Data Registry • The surprising statistic of how many lyme sufferers actually use antibiotics • How you can use the my lyme data to help you along your lyme journey. Lorraine Johnson is the Chief Executive Officer of LymeDisease.org and an attorney advocate. In 2014 she co-authored the Lyme disease guidelines of the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society. She has spoken before state legislatures, US and international governmental agencies, and at healthcare policy conferences throughout the world.
Glitter overdose in the cover art of this VERY DISCO DISCOVERY volume. The set compiles 70s and 80s Disco and Funk vibes. But always so up to date tracks starting with the opening track that says "¿Qué tal América? (How is it America?)" ideal to ask USA after the presidential election of last month. Following this track you can find a good range of Disco and Funk tracks made from masses to B side tracks. Genres that are part of my sets apart of a huge inspiration for a new sounds. The IDSA has just announced that it is revising its guidelines. Its process excludes patients with Lyme disease, physicians who treat them, and even researchers who do not adhere to the IDSA viewpoint that Lyme disease is “hard to catch and easy to diagnose and cureâ€. LymeDisease.org launched a patient survey on what patients who have Lyme disease value and find important. Over 6,000 patients responded in one month. LDo also filed comments with the LDA on behalf of over 90 patient groups. Lorraine discusses the guideline revision process and how it differs from the process for developing guidelines by ILADS last year.
Sen Merlin Bartz explains his side of the "who pays for the new fence" story. Then, Lorraine Johnson is the City Farmer...urban food growing...chicken rancher... Post debate feedback....ugh. Winner? Anderson Cooper.
