Episode 65. Six Degrees of Patti LaBelle. The Queen. The Legendary Godmother of Soul. Hosted by Troy Saunders, Wanda T., and Arif St. Michael. In this part of our series on the music and career of the legendary Patti LaBelle, we focus on Patti's early years with The Bluebells and LaBelle. Our special guest is singer and songwriter Keith Anthony Fluitt, who has performed with Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, Sarah Dash, Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, Bruce Springsteen, Pet Shop Boys, Michael Jackson, Harry Belafonte, and many others. We have asked him to be on the show since he has worked with Patti, Nona, and Sarah.Patti LaBelle grew up singing in a local Baptist choir, and in 1960 teamed with friend Cindy Birdsong to form a group called the Ordettes. A year later, following the additions of vocalists Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash, the group was renamed the Blue Belles. With producer Bobby Martin at the helm, they scored a Top 20 pop and R&B hit in 1962 with the single "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman," and subsequently hit the charts in 1964 with renditions of "Danny Boy" and "You'll Never Walk Alone."The quartet, now known as Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles, signed in 1965 to Atlantic, where they earned a minor hit with their version of the standard "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." In 1967, Birdsong replaced Florence Ballard in the Supremes. The remaining trio toured the so-called "Chitlin' Circuit" for the remainder of the decade before signing on with British manager Vicki Wickham in 1970. Wickham renamed the group simply LaBelle and pushed their music in a funkier, rock-oriented direction, and in the wake of their self-titled 1971 Warner Bros. debut, they even toured with the Who. The trio also collaborated with Laura Nyro on the superb R&B-influenced album “Gonna Take a Miracle”. By 1973, LaBelle had gone glam, taking the stage in wildly theatrical, futuristic costumes. A year later, they became the first African-American act to appear at New York's Metropolitan Opera House. The landmark performance introduced "Lady Marmalade," which in 1974 became their lone chart-topping single, produced by Allen Toussaint.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. Hosted by Troy Saunders, Wanda T., and Arif St. Michael. This episode in our series on the career and music of the legendary Patti LaBelle will focus on  the life of the great Sarah Dash. Special guest is B.J. Nelson. She was known as “The Voice” before Whitney Houston was “The Voice”.B.J. Nelson began singing in the late '60s in her hometown of Pittsburgh, fronting a band called Insane Soul. She moved to New York in 1979 and after becoming a member of T.M. Stevens' band, T-Bird. During her time with T-Bird, B.J. met guitarist Ronald "Head" Drayton, which led to her becoming a member of Nona Hendryx's band. She has also worked with Duran Duran, Power Station, Will Downing and Robert Palmer.Sarah Dash was a founding member of the groundbreaking, million-selling vocal trio LaBelle, along with Patti LaBelle and Nona Hendryx. She brought her church-rooted soprano and high harmonies to LaBelle, which began as a 1960s girl group before reinventing itself as a socially aware, Afro-futuristic rock and funk powerhouse, costumed in glittery sci-fi outfits and singing about revolution as well as earthy romance. In 1974, LaBelle had a No. 1 hit, “Lady Marmalade,” and performed the first concert by a pop group - and a Black group - at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. From troubled upbringing with her mother who suffered from undiagnosed schizophrenia, to foster homes and reform schools, then finding her groove in her own band The Bloods, it's not surprising that this former backup singer for the likes of Culture Club, and Whitney Houston, final made her move to live her queer identity. Three time author, singer, songwriter Adele Bertei joins us to share her life journey of self-acceptance and to talk about her new book Twist: An American Girl. About Adele Adele Bertei musical history includes singing back up for Culture Club, Whitney Houston, Sandra Bernhard, and Matthew Sweet among others. She released records as a solo artist with the Geffen and Chrysalis labels and has had international dance and pop hits with Thomas Dolby (“Hyperactive!”) and Jellybean (“Just a Mirage”). She has also written songs for artists as diverse as Sheena Easton, Arthur Baker, Lydia Lunch, and the Pointer Sisters, among others. In the '70s, Adele fronted the punk band the Wolves in Cleveland, OH with Pere Ubu bandmate Peter Laughner which became the basis of her first book Peter and the Wolves. His sudden death prompted her move to NYC in 1977 where she immersed herself in the counter-culture movement of art, film, music and literature. A founding member of The Contortions (produced by none other than Brian Eno), she dove deep into the underground, having toured the world with her other band The Bloods, America's first out, queer, all-women-rock band. Why Labelle Matters was also extremely well-received and it was about Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash and how their band Labelle revolutionized how women bands were perceived. Her second book Why Labelle Matters was also extremely well-received and it was about Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash and how their band Labelle revolutionized how women bands were perceived. Twist: An American Girl, is a memoir about her troubled upbringing with her mother who suffered from undiagnosed schizophrenia, her subsequent placing in foster homes and reform schools, her discovery of her own queer identity and her appreciation of music. Keith Richards made Talk is Cheap in 1988 as a response to Mick Jagger's efforts as a solo artist and the sniping the two had engaged in via the press in the mid-80s.  But the Glimmer Twins made up, recorded Steel Wheels in 1989 and launched one of the biggest tours in rock history, reestablishing the Stones as a viable touring act. However, Keith didn't want to give up this fabulous band he'd created with Steve Jordan (now in the Stones), Charlie Drayton, Ivan Neville, Waddy Wachtel, Sarah Dash and Bobby Keys.  So while the Stones paused before Voodoo Lounge, Keith & the X-Pensive Wynos released Main Offender.  Wicked As It Seems was a bit of a hit on rock radio and inspired Mick to work with Keith to create Love Is Strong off Voodoo Lounge. It's a great album and the band did tour to support it.  We're reviewing the 30th anniversary edition which includes a live performance from England in 1993.  Truth be told this one has been on the shelf for a while as the 30th anniversary edition was released in March 2022 but we've been busy with interviews, live concert reviews and lots of fun stuff.  So ahead of its official anniversary on October 19, we offer our review of Main Offender 30th Anniversary Edition.Ugly American Werewolf in London WebsiteThe RockonteursTwitterInstagramYouTubeLInkTreewww.pantheonpodcasts.comWant to win front row seats to Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets in the US?Enter here to win tickets and a chance to be on a Pantheon Podcast: https://pantheonpodcasts.com/nickmasonWe'll be at the Indianapolis show Friday, October 14, Get tickets here: https://www.thesaucerfulofsecrets.com/

By chance, Dick Wagner met her, and introduced her to Tim Curry. Shattering Gleam: A Podcast About Music and Gender

LaBelle, the musical trio of Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash, inspired much of the queer, expressive freedom that defined glam rock in the mid-70s, and yet their story and music has essentially been erased from the genre's history. Our host Sasha Geffen and writer Adele Bertei dive into the self-contained unit of fiery, inspired women: three musicians and one manager, whose influence has stretched from Grace Jones to Lil Nas X. Bertei tells the stories of her own experience at a LaBelle “wear silver” show and meeting David Bowie and Geffen gets into the band's famous costumes – whose designer would later go on to design wear for Parliament-Funkadelic and KISS.

Sarah Dash, the singer and co-founder of the all-female singing group Labelle, best known for their 1974 hit "Lady Marmalade," died Monday at the age of 76. I have decided to honor Sarah's wish and go on and celebrate her as she should be celebrated. As an award-winning vocalist, songwriter, motivational speaker, educator, entrepreneur, and humanitarian, Sarah is a unique force whose voice has touched millions of listeners around the world. From co-founding Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles and making history as a member of Labelle to becoming the very first Music Ambassador (2017) of Trenton, New Jersey, Sarah has blazed a trail in every facet of her remarkable career. The radio dial introduced her to everything from R&B and rock 'n' roll to country and polka, with the voices of Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, and Smokey Robinson shaping some of Sarah's earliest influences alongside albums by Mahalia Jackson, Nat "King" Cole, Andy Williams, and her brother's jazz collection.

We open this episode providing condolences to a legendary singer, Ms. Sarah Dash, who was one of the founding members of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, who then went on to be LaBelle, and who had her solo career. A true talent and an amazing persona on stage. Today's episode may touch on some sensitive issues, such as statutory rape, LGBTQ issues, and power dynamics in relationships. We are discussing the case of Tarence “TJ” Mitchell and Ronald Taylor Jr. TJ, 18 years old at the time, was Bloomfield High's star athlete — academically sound and popular. Ronald Taylor, 27 at the time, was TJ's friend and avid football game supporter. But something happened between them and Ronald ended up dead. Was TJ forced into a relationship with Ronald? Was Ronald attempting to extort TJ into the relationship by threatening to expose him? Or did TJ act out fear of how others would perceive him if they found out that he was in a relationship with another man? Power dynamic because of the age difference? Find out in this episode. It would not be the Café if we didn't discuss these things openly and honestly — but most importantly — while having a good ole drink in our hands.Stream wherever you listen to podcasts or on our website. Sarah shares how she pursued a career path in public health policy, inspired by Edward Stierle's biography, A Dance Against Time: The Brief, Brilliant Life of a Joffrey Dancer. Before joining Alliance for Health Policy, Sarah shares her background as a Health Policy Advisor and Senior Legislative Assistant under Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro and Senator John D. Rockefeller IV. She outlines her roles in developing the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act and the Informed Consumer Choices in Healthcare Act, which contributed to the final package of the Affordable Care Act under the Obama administration. Alliance for Health Policy is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization to advance knowledge and education of health policy issues. The organization focuses on bi-partisan engagement with congressional staff to address the nation's health care issues and make proposals for change. Alliance for Health Policy implements solution-focused dialogue regarding all initiatives. Sarah shares some of the health initiatives discussed with congress members, such as behavioral health, maternal mortality, rural access, and the opioid crisis. Sarah and KP discuss the evolvement of health equity. They share how the lack of a clearly defined definition in the United States creates a divide in discussions and impacts policymakers in determining the concept. They further address how societal values contribute to the priorities and outlook of health equity—creating both destructive and constructive criticism. KP explains how constructive criticism can encourage positive discussion and lead to better, more inclusive policies.Connect with Sarah Dash:https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarahdash/https://www.linkedin.com/company/alliance-for-health-policy/https://twitter.com/SarahJDashhttps://twitter.com/AllHealthPolicyConnect with KP:linkedin.com/in/kaakpema-kp-yelpaala-379b269/https://twitter.com/inonhealthinonhealth.com/podcastinonhealth.com/

Sarah Dash defines the word "legend." As an award-winning vocalist, songwriter, motivational speaker, educator, entrepreneur, and humanitarian, Sarah is a unique force whose voice has touched millions of listeners around the world. From co-founding Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles and making history as a member of Labelle to becoming the very first Music Ambassador (2017) of Trenton, New Jersey, Sarah has blazed a trail in every facet of her remarkable career. Music has been a constant source of inspiration in Sarah's life ever since her childhood in Trenton. The seventh of thirteen children born to Elder Abraham Dash and Mother Elizabeth Dash, Sarah sang in the Trenton Church of Christ Choir as a young girl and entertained her classmates with renditions of standards like "With These Hands." The radio dial introduced her to everything from R&B and rock 'n' roll to country and polka, with the voices of Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, and Smokey Robinson shaping some of Sarah's earliest influences alongside albums by Mahalia Jackson, Nat "King" Cole, Andy Williams, and her brother's jazz collection. Doo-wop groups The Capris and The Dells inspired the name of Sarah's first group, the Del-Capris, which included another Trenton-based singer, Nona Hendryx. When Sarah and Nona teamed with Patricia (Patti) Holte and Cynthia (Cindy) Birdsong of The Ordettes, a new group was born — The Bluebelles. Beginning in 1962, Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles were among the most dynamic vocal groups of the 1960s, recording for major labels like Cameo-Parkway and Atlantic, touring the Chitlin' Circuit, and earning rave reviews for their appearances at the Apollo Theater where they were affectionately nicknamed "The Sweethearts of the Apollo." Four years after Cindy Birdsong left the Bluebelles to join Diana Ross & the Supremes, Sarah, Patti, and Nona signed with Warner Bros., unveiling a new name and a new style on Labelle (1971) and Moon Shadow (1972), and recording with acclaimed singer-songwriter Laura Nyro on Gonna Take a Miracle (1971). Working with manager and former Ready Steady Go! producer Vicki Wickham, the trio began writing their own songs and geared their sound towards a progressive fusion of rock and soul. With the release of Pressure Cookin' (1973) on RCA, Labelle transformed into funk-rock goddesses outfitted in fashion-forward couture. A trio of albums on Epic Records, the gold-selling Nightbirds (1974), Phoenix (1975), and Chameleon (1976), sparked Labelle's breakthrough to mainstream success. They topped the Hot 100 with "Lady Marmalade," graced the cover of Rolling Stone, sold out theaters across the country, and made history as the first black group to perform at New York's Metropolitan Opera House. After Labelle parted ways in 1977, Sarah embarked on a successful solo career. She acted in and wrote the theme song to Watch Your Mouth! (1978), a PBS series produced by Ellis Haizlip (Soul!) that also starred Joe Morton (Scandal). She released three albums on CBS-distributed Kirshner Records, Sarah Dash (1978), Oo-La-La (1980), and Close Enough (1981), scoring a massive disco hit with "Sinner Man," which featured Jerry Butler. Throughout the '80s and '90s, she recorded a series of club singles, including "Low Down Dirty Rhythm," plus her fourth solo effort You're All I Need (1988) on EMI-Manhattan Records. Her highly accalimed Gospel project featured several of her own self-penned tracks, including "I'm Still Here," which has since become a show-stopper of her concerts. In between producing her one-woman stage shows, "Dash of Diva" and "Sarah: One Woman," Sarah brought her talent to several different projects. Having worked with a variety of acts like Living Colour, Nile Rodgers, Alice Cooper, The Marshall Tucker Band, The O'Jays, Wilson Pickett and Bo Diddley over the years, she toured and recorded with Keith Richards' X-Pensive Winos and appeared on the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels (1989) album. She reunited with Patti and Nona for the #1 club hit "Turn It Out" (1995), received the Rhythm & Blues Foundation's "Pioneer Award" in 1999, and recorded the Labelle reunion album Back to Now (2008), featuring productions by Lenny Kravitz, Wyclef Jean, and Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff. In 2017, the members of Labelle were inducted to the Philadelphia Music Alliance's Music Walk of Fame. She's a member of the Grammy Board of Governors (Philadelphia chapter), serves as the Grammy New Jersey Ambassador for the Advocacy Board of the Membership Committee, and is a member of the Grammy Hall of Fame (2003), as well as the Board of Trustees for the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic Orchestra. Most recently, she joined fellow legends at the Apollo Theater for the Jazz Foundation of America's salute to singer Merry Clayton. Sarah Dash has built on a legacy that traces more than 50 years of music. Like the greatest music legends, there is truly no limit to the inspiration Sarah Dash brings to every note she sings.

Beispieltrack: „House Music Will Never Die“. Ein wirklich besonderer Mix in einem besonderen Adventskalender-Jahr. Beginning in 1962, Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles were among the most dynamic vocal groups of the 1960s, recording for major labels like Cameo-Parkway and Atlantic, touring the Chitlin' Circuit, and earning rave reviews for their appearances at the Apollo Theater where they were affectionately nicknamed "The Sweethearts of the Apollo." As the pandemic crisis continues to impact lives and livelihoods, healthcare leaders are challenged to emerge from it in a way that lays a foundation for a stronger, more resilient healthcare system in the years to come. Fundamental to this opportunity is to reimagine not just a more equitable and innovated healthcare system, but a system that works together to become far more than just the sum of its own parts. InsideOut host Mike Alkire, President of Premier Inc., speaks to Sarah Dash, President and CEO of The Alliance for Health Policy, on building consensus across the healthcare system and using technology to redefine the blueprint of the future of healthcare.

Pucking Funny’s first ever multi interview episode includes talks with Lauren Didusko, Chri Wong and Sarah Dash. All 3 are current members of the Melbourne ICE, and could have more different roads to landing in Australia's City by the Bay. Lauren from regional NSW, Chris from Hong Kong, and Sarah from London Ontario Canada. Their different roads to Australia and to hockey show how no matter a person’s origin, we all have more in common than different.

Oprah’s Master Class: The Podcast

Legendary performer, Patti LaBelle, has electrified audiences more 50 years. When Patti was a little girl growing up in Philadelphia, she says she was so shy, her mother used to bribe her with quarters to play with other children. But in the privacy of her bedroom, a singer was born, when Patti started performing using a broomstick as a microphone. Years before Lady Gaga and Madonna, Patti, along with Sarah Dash and Nona Hendryx, revolutionized music with their out-of-this-world fashion and over-the-top hairstyles. Their glam-rock girl group, Labelle, scored a number one hit with "Lady Marmalade." When the women parted ways, Patti went solo, and despite crippling anxiety at her first show, she received a standing ovation and never looked back. A bestselling cookbook author, sweet potato pie queen and self-described cheesecake addict, Patti took charge of her health and made drastic changes to her diet after being diagnosed with diabetes, the same disease that contributed to her mother's death. She also discusses the deaths of her three sisters from cancer, and shares how their deaths influence the way she lives her life. Patti has a recurring role on this season of OWN’s hit show Greenleaf, playing the part of Maxine Patterson, a famous Christian motivational speaker and the CEO of a global, faith-based self-help empire.

Clockwise from top: Sarah Dash, Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, Cindy Birdsong In the 1960s there was a doo-wop girl group called the Blue Belles (sometimes known as The Bluebelles, or Patti and the Bluebelles). After Cindy Birdsong left the group in 1967 to become a Supreme, the group reinvented themselves and became Labelle. In the early 1970s they were a funk-rock group, recording covers of The Rolling Stones, Carole King and all kinds of other stuff that no other similarly-composed group would even consider. But another couple of years went by and they reinvented themselves again, embracing the the Glam Rock look and sound, and it was during that era that they scored their biggest hit, a proto-disco-funk track called "Lady Marmalade", which went to Number One on the Billboard Chart in March of 1975. Over the years since then, Labelle's influence can still be heard in the sounds of groups like En Vogue, the Pussycat Dolls, and Destiny's Child. Their fearlessness has inspired at least a couple of generations of pop musicians, and even their non-hit tracks are regularly covered. "Lady Marmalade" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003, and I'll bet you didn't even know that "Grammy Hall of Fame" was even a thing. Also that year, Don received the Marion James Award as Nashville's Bassist of the Year. Lorenzo Washington, Producer and CEO of Jefferson Street Sound sought to revive the Jefferson Street music scene that had been relegated to history books, museum exhibits and stories told by those reminiscing the rhythm and blues, soul, rock and jazz music that emanated from the Nashville's Jefferson Street scene.Washington turned to Don Adams to write, produce and record the label's first full-length debut under the name the Don Adams Band. The label's first release is a collection of R&B-infused jazz songs by the Don Adams Band modestly titled “Caution: May Cause Passion.” Adams describes the music on “Caution: May Cause Passion” released October 2013, as “borrowing elements from jazz, R&B and soul. We make the music and the listeners/fans decided whether it is good or not.” Music is available through online retailers.
