When Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn sent an internal memo about AI last year, he didn't expect it to go viral — or to ignite a firestorm about the future of work. Now he joins Rapid Response to unpack what he got right, what he got wrong, and what the backlash taught him about the real limitations of AI. Von Ahn also reveals why he's made a deliberate pivot in 2026: chasing users, not revenue — and what that bet says about how big Duolingo can get before ads become inevitable. It's a candid reckoning with hype, growth, and the surprisingly complicated promise of technology in education.Visit the Rapid Response website here: https://www.rapidresponseshow.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Duolingo (NASDAQ:DUOL) is down 77% over the last year while the S&P 500 is up 32% but 7investing founder Simon Erickson is defending the owl. In this deep dive into Duolingo's Q1 2026 earnings, Simon breaks down why the bearish narrative around slowing top-line growth and AI competition from OpenAI and Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) may be missing the bigger picture: Duolingo is one of the most capital-efficient software businesses in the market, with a 37% return on invested capital, a cash ROIC of 99.4%, 50%+ free cash flow margins, and zero long-term debt.Simon also covers the optionality that most analysts are overlooking — Duolingo's math app, music lessons, chess, and the internationally recognized Duolingo English Test — and explains why CEO Luis Von Ahn's methodical, profitability-first approach makes this a compelling long-term hold even as short-term sentiment stays negative.Stocks Mentioned:Duolingo (NASDAQ:DUOL)Alphabet / Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL)OpenAI — private#Duolingo #DUOL #GrowthStocks #TechStocks #StockAnalysis #BuyTheDip #EarningsReport #AIStocks #SoftwareStocks #StocksToWatch #InvestingIn2026 #7investing #Simonerickson

Luis von Ahn was a tenured professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University who had sold a company to Google. “You were pretty set, a lot of us would say, so why were you so hungry to build something new with Duolingo?” asks Ayesha Karnik, MBA '25. “For the first time ever, with phones, we can reach billions of people,” reflects the Duolingo co-founder and CEO. “I want it to be the case that we can show that screen time is actually useful for the world.” From human-computer interaction and pioneering early 2000s consumer tech gamification to his thoughts on leadership and the future of AI, von Ahn shares his unique perspective on where he's been, what he's working on today, and the future of learning. There's also that unpredictable owl mascot. “I wouldn't say our brand is ‘chaos,' okay?” he jokes. “We call it wholesome unhinged.”This episode was recorded on May 5, 2025.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Luis von Ahn is the co-founder and CEO of Duolingo. There are lots of opportunities to enhance a product like Duolingo with AI, and we talk about all that — but I also wanted to talk to Luis about learning, generally. Duolingo is a global product, and there are a lot of tech tensions there, dealing with different user needs worldwide. Duolingo Co-founder and CEO Luis von Ahn shares his journey from creating CAPTCHA, founding a multi-billion dollar language learning app, and how his company produced their delightfully unhinged mascot.
Breakthroughs in generative AI have created enormous opportunities for humans to learn from computers. We can use them to explain the news, understand historical concepts, fix our coding errors, and so forth. But of course, AI also has to learn from human. The technology digests enormous amounts of written text, and often relies on human feedback to calibrate its models. Luis von Ahn has been at the forefront of these back and forth interactions for years. He is currently the CEO and co-founder of Duolingo, the language learning app, but prior to that, he was one of the original developers of CAPTCHAs, the little puzzles you solve to log into websites and prove that you're a human. And of course, in the process of proving your humanity, you're also training computers to get better at identifying red lights, cross walks, bicycles and wavy letters. On this episode, we discuss the history of his work, the future of CAPTCHAs, the success of Duolingo and how he is using today's advanced AI models in aid of language learnings.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2000, Luis von Ahn was starting his PhD in computer science when he attended a talk and happened to learn about one of Yahoo's biggest problems: automated bots were signing up for millions of free Yahoo email accounts, and generating tons of spam. Luis' idea to solve this problem became CAPTCHA, the squiggly letters we type into a website to prove we're human. He gave away that idea for free, but years later, that same idea had evolved into a new way to monetize language learning on the web, and became Duolingo. Today, Duolingo is a publicly-traded company with a market cap of $9 billion. This episode was produced by Casey Herman, with music composed by Ramtin Arablouei. Guest: Luis von Ahn, CEO and co-founder of DuolingoWhen Luis von Ahn wanted to go to college in the United States, he had to take a standardized test called the TOEFL, or Test of English as a Foreign Language. Many years later, as the co-founder and CEO of Duolingo, Luis and his team “decided this type of thing, we could do a lot better.” Today, more than 4,500 universities accept the results of the online Duolingo English Test — a boon for the estimated 2 billion people currently learning English around the world. In this episode, Luis and Joubin discuss returning to the office, Carnegie Mellon, identifying strivers, the “Luis dashboard,” ignoring Reddit, pre-meetings, the hardest part of learning, sounding dumb, private security, the job of a professor, digitizing books, working out every day, April Fools' campaigns, Duo the owl, and hiring nice people. In this episode, we cover: Working in Pittsburgh, in-person (00:57) How Duolingo hires (06:48) Growing up in Guatemala (10:29) Luis' parents, intelligence, and drive (12:09) His morning routine (16:56) Ground truth (19:39) “The smaller the team, the better” (22:29) Language education and human behavior (24:32) Learning English (28:53) Back to Guatemala (32:03) CAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA (36:10) Money vs. impact (41:26) Luis' TEDx Talk and public speaking tips (44:46) Love Language and nontraditional marketing (48:46) Doubling down on what works (53:27) Slow hiring (56:44) Would Luis ever start something new? If you're not one of their 500 million users, Duolingo is a phenomenally successful app where you practise a language in small chunks every day. Launched in 2012, it has become the number one language learning app and the most downloaded education app in the world. The company floated in 2021 and currently has a market cap of just under 4 billion dollars. It's rare for a founder to be brilliant at both invention and business but Luis Von Ahn, the Co-Founder and CEO of Duolingo, is one of them. Before Duolingo, he invented Captcha - those squiggly letters you have to write out to prove you're not a computer. The guy's a genius, and that's a fact. He actually won an award for being one in 2006, the prestigious Macarthur Fellows Program award. It's colloquially known as the genius grant, because it's said you have to be one to get it. Luis grew up in a single parent household in Guatemala. His mother spent all the money she could sending him to the best school she could afford. This experience, of seeing the difference between those who receive a good education and those who don't, would later form the basis of Duolingo. But when Luis and his Co-Founder Severin started Duolingo in 2012 they had a big problem - how could they keep their users coming back? Listen to find out. A special preview of the podcast, Unsung Science with David Pogue from CBS News. Journalist and author David Pogue finds the untold creation stories behind the most mind-blowing advances in science and tech—and hears from the characters involved—from their first inspiration to the times they almost gave up. This episode looks at the bad guys who used software bots to sign up for millions of fake email accounts—for sending out spam. Then, PhD student Luis Von Ahn stopped them. He invented the CAPTCHA, that website login test where you have to decipher the distorted image of a word. Or you have to find the traffic lights or fire hydrants in a grid of nine blurry photos. Those tests help to keep down the volume of spam, spyware, and misinformation; they advance the clarity of digitized books and the intelligence of self-driving cars; and, by the way, they made a handsome profit. The only problem: We HATE those tests! Guest: Luis Von Ahn, co-inventor of CAPTCHA, co-inventor and CEO of Duolingo. Hear more episodes of Unsung Science at https://unsungscience.com/.
