We discuss what he really wants for the holidays - which is apparently for me to stop being so hard on myself. Oof. For Segment 2, The Long Covid Choir kindly shared a recording of a holiday song with us, called Alles Schweiget! Included is an introduction from choir director Merel van der Knoop. You can watch a video the choir put together on YouTube. Here are the lyrics in German and English: Alles schweiget, Nachtigallen locken mit süßen Melodien Tränen ins Auge, Schwermut ins Herz. All is Silent All is silent nightingales draw with sweet melodies tears in the eye heaviness in the heart. Music attrib. Haydn/Mozart Photography: Janne Cecilie Bjerkeland Produced: Merel van der Knoop In Segment 3, I have a nice long chat with Lior Ocean about what a crock new year's resolutions are, and we discuss self compassion and showing ourselves loving kindness in 2025 Segment 4 features Joe Glasgow, who contributed a story called If These Pillows Could Talk Nina Storey kicked my ass with shares a demo of a new song called Shadows Fall (Love Myself). Nina said: "Let your audience know you inspired me after we spoke after your iron infusion, and every person dealing with a chronic illness and chronic pain or disability inspires this song too.  We are all warriors." Lyrics: Shadows Fall (Love Myself) Written by Nina Storey  Verse I so long alone  surrounded by the noise  still on my own scattered through an empty void but get up and I show up cause I've grown up in the dark and I'm bleeding but I'm breathing and I know I'm come so far Chorus shadows fall from yesterday what I've lost is far away where to go when all the love is gone when everyone has walked away  and I alone have got to stay  I learn to love myself and carry on Verse II take my life in minutes count them each a win when I reach the end of one, then I start to count again so I'll fake it, 'till I make it cause most don't seem to care but I'm ready and I'm clawing my way back for every breath of air Bridge I survived a stormy ride across my soul you can't break me iron veins have made me whole Chorus shadows fall from yesterday what I've lost is far away where to go when all the love is gone when everyone has walked away  I alone have got to stay learn to love myself and carry on  Thank you all for contributing, and thank you listeners for supporting this endeavor this year! I hope you have a lovely holiday season! To further spread some joy, there's a pretty decent giveaway happening for this special episode! Welcome to a special pre-holidays ep of A Friend for the Long Haul! This is just shy of 2.5 hours but full of good chats. Here's the guest list! Caryn Zaner (0:01:01) is a clinical psychologist specializing in helping folks with identity & values alignment, anxiety, & group therapy. Find their professional Instagram account here. My obsession with Caryn started with this post on still Coviding and attachment theory. We discuss the stinky onion of grief, lost friendships, & values alignment. We get into setting boundaries - are we asking permission instead of actually setting them? Is it effective to appeal to empathy to “make your case” & or is it a waste of spoons? We dive into how difficult it is to make friends as adults. Caryn talks about the Wednesday night peer support group they facilitate & sends out a call to join a cross-generational queer group they want to start! Wanda Belisle (0:26:23) is a registered health coach, dealing with ME/CFS for several years & shares her experience to help people with ME & Long Covid pace. I'm not a client of Wanda's, but I find her posts helpful, & it's refreshing that when she's in a flare or crash, she shares it . In the ‘wellness' space that is rare for fear of diminishing returns on a ‘product.' We discuss pacing during the holidays. The focus is on parenting, but is relevant to all . Wanda explains how she's saved spoons by asking herself how she wants to feel, talking as a family about what's important , & how she reviews that. She offers tips on asking for help, delegating, being your own “Santa” & explaining pacing to family. As a gift, Wanda is sharing a pdf guide: Thriving this Season with ME/CFS and Long Covid for free. You can download it here.  Chimére & Tory Sweeney (0:57:54) joined me for a full-length episode, coming out soon. In this excerpt, we discuss what they have planned for the holidays - or - what they DO NOT have planned.  Kathleen Banks (1:02:35) has been working in public health for about 20 years & while we were having a casual conversation about grief (as you do) she mentioned the concentric circles of grief. We about it & it really helped me understand why I get so annoyed when other people put their grief about my illness back on me. We discuss appealing to empathy again, self-compassion (hello Kristen Neff), & touch on identifying your needs - something we'll talk about in an episode soon. Notes & links from Kathleen: My recent commentary on research priorities for Long COVID, *note for podcast that all my opinions expressed during our interview are mine & do not represent those of any of my affiliations, organizations or co-authors. “How not to say the wrong thing,” LA Times article on Ring Theory. Mara Glatzel's work. Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice by Leah Lakshmi Piepnza-Samarasinha.  Jillian & Natalie ( 1:30:09) are my local long hauler bffs. We discuss how this illness has affected our relationships with family & friends, being a lifeline for each other, our “words” for 2024, spending time together over the holidays, & friends who “get it.”  Lesa Schultz ( 1:52:52) was my first ever podcast guest & is one of my dearest long hauler friends. Lesa has an invitation to everyone to join a Sunday night long covid support group she facilitates, & has an update on what it's been like moving across the country to be closer to family while still upholding Covid boundaries.  The end (2:08:48) is a gift from Dr. Laurie Nadel, who has been on the podcast. Dr. Nadel is a psychotherapist. She & Lesa have been building a YouTube channel of meditations, & we have an exclusive for your holiday szn. It is 18 minutes long. Like, subscribe, share episodes pls! If you can, leave a review to help get it in more earballs. Listen to the podcast's Long Covid Theme Songs playlist on Spotify. Episode 15: The Five Gifts - Discovering Hope, Healing and Strength When Disaster Strikes This week on A Friend for the Long Haul, I welcome a fellow traveler on the path of chronic illness! Dr. Laurie Nadel, a renowned journalist and therapist, joins us to share her incredible journey. Dr. Nadel has battled chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and COPD, and understands the physical and emotional toll of long-term illness. We'll delve into her amazing career, her own struggles with chronic illness, trauma, and loss - and her dedication to helping Long Haulers. Some history from Dr. Nadel's website that I think you'll just eat up: "After an internship with the London Daily Mirror, she worked at Reuters Television in London where she became the first woman news writer. Returning to New York, she became the first woman news writer-producer at ABC News, working with correspondents and cameramen around the world. A member of the Writers Guild of America, Nadel produced news about the Vietnam war and the anti-war movement, Watergate and the Nixon-McGovern presidential election when President Nixon won a second term." "In 1988, after a long battle with chronic fatigue syndrome, Nadel was laid off while she was medically disabled. As she started to improve with the help of meditation, hypnotherapy and Chinese medicine, she rebooted her journalism career by writing for airline magazines and Men's Fitness. Around this time, she returned to graduate school to earn two doctorates in psychology and clinical hypnotherapy. These credentials opened the way for her to focus on behavioral health topics and led to her writing several psychology books." In this episode, you'll learn: How Dr. Nadel's experience with CFS shaped her work as a therapist. Her unique approach to healing, incorporating elements of psychology, hypnotherapy, and indigenous wisdom. The "Five Gifts" from her book, explained as they relate to Long Haulers (she's committed to offering long-term support for women who endure permanent chronic health difficulties since the first wave of COVID in 2020. With Dr. Noah Greenspan's Pulmonary Wellness Foundation, she helped launch the longest ongoing support program for Long Covid patients. Practical tools and strategies for building resilience and finding hope amidst chronic illness Dr. Laurie also takes us through some ways to trust our bodies and our guts in an effort to find our inner wisdom and inner healer, and shares some of her favorite meditation techniques. Whether you're a Long Hauler, someone with ME/CFS, or facing any chronic health battle, this episode is a beacon of strength and support. Don't miss Dr. Laurie Nadel's inspiring story and advice! https://www.laurienadel.com/about.htmlFrom Journalist to Therapist: Her BackstoryToday we call those events “breaking news.”  During her twenty years working as a writer-producer for CBS News, Reuters Television and ABC News, she came to realize that people whose lives were destroyed by violence would need long-term support. As a result of her experience covering the military dictatorship in Chile for Newsweek, Laurie worked with several human rights organizations upon her return to the States. She started the human rights committee of the Overseas Press Club and co-founded the Committee to Protect Journalists. (NY Times and  World Policy Journal.)In 1987, after burning out working the Iran-Contra hearings on the heels of a long Writers Guild of America strike,  Laurie came down with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS/ME) and was bedridden for nearly three years.  As there is no conventional treatment for this virus, she began studying the work of Dr. Herbert Benson who introduced meditation to the medical community.  She began a lifelong meditation practice and eventually went back to graduate school for doctorates in cognitive psychology and clinical hypnotherapy. In 2000, she completed post-doctoral clinical training in mind-body medicine with Dr. Benson at Harvard Medical School's Institute of Mind-Body Medicine. Her need to find new ways to help people struggling with mental health issues led her to travel to South America in the 1990s to study with indigenous healers and shamans in the jungles, mountains, and cities of South America.   Dr. Laurie integrates their teachings of connecting with nature into all of her sessions and workshops. A Reiki Master for the past two decades, she is expanding her Reiki practice to help animals and their human companions,  (animalreikiplanet.com)A psychotherapist in Manhattan during the week,  Laurie spent most weekends filing cover stories for The New York Times.  Her “On the Water” features covered the local marine environment and extreme water sports. Her column “Long Island at Worship” reported on communities of faith in the suburbs.  An expert in stress, health and trauma, Laurie has done more than 100 TV interviews including CBS News, CNN and the BBC. Her work has been featured in  The Wall Street Journal , Business Insider, People magazine and The New York Times. She was a guest on Oprah, talking about her revolutionary four-time best-seller Sixth Sense: Unlocking Your Ultimate Mind Power  which launched the psychic revolution.  Still in print after 33 years, Sixth Sense broke the story of the Pentagon's secret psychic espionage program.

Author and speaker Tom T. Moore has a telepathic connection with guardian angels. In the first half, he shared the latest telepathic messages he's received for 2024 and beyond, and how people can tap into the angelic realm using meditation techniques. His meditative practice includes breathing in through his nose and out through his mouth and surrounding himself with a protective bubble of light. According to Moore, the pineal gland acts as a kind of telepathic antenna. Further, everyone has their own guardian angel, which he characterized as a being of golden light. He was told that the war in Ukraine will be winding down in the next few months, but unfortunately, the conflict in Israel and the Middle East will widen.Moore delved into the topic of an ancient cosmic war involving various alien races, including the Reptilians, that lasted for 270,000 years. The Reptilians, he said, came from another galaxy and started taking over various planets, which triggered the war. Moore said he was informed that humanity has another 7,000 years on the planet, and things will be getting much more benevolent along the way. "By the end of this century, there will hardly be any wars," he added. He also revealed that he and his family will soon visit a three-mile-wide mothership from the Sirius star system, and he plans to document the trip. The craft, he claimed, will be cloaked 50 miles up in our atmosphere when he makes the journey.---------In the latter half, author and psychotherapist Dr. Laurie Nadel discussed her most recent work on using Reiki to help animals and pet owners deal with trauma, illness, and end-of-life issues. While Reiki is typically thought of as in-person energy work, she has been able to adapt the therapy remotely by looking at a photo of a specific animal. "The feedback that I get from the animals, human parent, or companion is that even though I may be sitting in...another city, or from another state, they will let me know how the animals responded during that meditation...so it really is a very pure form of energy healing," she remarked.Nadel described one case of using Reiki healing/meditation remotely on a woman's very ill cat in Istanbul, where the vet had said there was nothing more they could do. She entered a state of quiet stillness to connect with the essence or soul of the creature, and the cat conveyed through images and a few words that she was a fighter and loved her human very much. The cat ended up living for another year and a half, Nadel noted. She explained the "let animals lead" Reiki approach, which acknowledges the animal's sentience, and lets them decide if the healing is right for them. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/georgenoory/message

With a dual career in psychology and media, Dr. Nadel is the author of eight books, including Sixth Sense: Unlocking Your Ultimate Mind Power, a four-time best-seller. Her new book The Five Gifts: Discovering Hope, Healing and Strength When Disaster Strikes (Foreword by Dan Rather) was voted one of the Best Books of 2018 by the prestigious Library Journal. A journalist for 20 years, she produced hard news and obituaries for CBS News before deciding to careers due to health issues complicated by burnout from the Iran-Contra hearings. psychologist Dr. Laurie Nadel is on the front lines of disaster mental health. For the past two years she has been leading a Sunday night support program online for longhaulers—the 30 percent of COVID patients who develop severe neurological and cardiac conditions after surviving the acute respiratory infection stage. In her personal search for information about how the mind and spirit work, she has been privileged to train with indigenous healers in South America and with several remote viewers, the government's veteran psychic spies. It was Laurie Nadel who broke the story of the Pentagon's secret psychic espionage–remote viewing–program in her book Sixth Sense. She went on to study remote viewing with veteran RV'er Lyn Buchanan and several other veterans of the government's secret program. She began studying meditation and researching information on complementary and alternative medicine.

One of my most requested guests has come back on the show to talk how we can keep hope, have healing and know we have strength when it seems like none of that is possible. Dr. Laurie Nadel talks about terminal lethargy, what tasks we need to schedule and if the body and mind really learn to accept a new normal. Dr. Laurie Nadel is a psychologist who helps people recover from disasters, including the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001.  She continues to work with first responders who remain deeply affected by the event some 20 years later; she also directed a program for teenagers whose fathers were killed that day.  A former journalist, she spent 20 years in TV newsrooms in London and New York with an assignment for Newsweek in Chile during a state of siege. This led to her founding the Committee to Protect Journalists, a human rights organization. Since launching her psychology practice 30 years ago, Dr. Laurie has helped individuals and organizations heal from trauma, including the Parkland school shooting teachers and survivors of Hurricane Sandy where she lost her own home.   She currently leads free online support groups for firefighters and for individuals who are longhaul COVID survivors. She is the author of "The Five Gifts: Discovering Hope, Healing and Strength When Disaster Strikes."

As the bestselling author of God is Your Defender, an international speaker and co-host of marriage podcast The Power of Us, Rosie uses her voice to give hope to fellow survivors of sexual abuse. Today, Rosie shares her painful journey and how she found serenity including: the tragic loss of her beloved sister, internationally acclaimed singer Jenni Rivera the trauma of being sexually abused as a child finding peace in surrendering pain This conversation will empower you to face life's minor or most hurtful situations with courage, compassion + perseverance. SHOW NOTES: As a family of eight living in a two-bed one-bath home, Rosie didn't recognize how poverty-stricken until she was blessed later in life. Jenni Rivera is known as the most important female figure and top selling female artist in Regional Mexican music, and the first to sell out Los Angeles' Staple Center. Robbed of her voice: At nine, and overcome with anger, Rosie confronted the family member that was being sexually abusive. At 16, Rosie refused to remain silent and took action. “For 18 years I battled a trauma and depression because of that sexual abuse. Once I was healed I was also set free and I wanted to share that hope with all survivors so I began speaking to anyone that would listen.” “One of the biggest weapons an abuser can have is our silence.” Rosie empowers her three children to know the value + beauty of their bodies and fosters strong avenues of communication. Healing is your responsibility: After 18 years of seeking revenge, Rosie found herself living in anger. Before surrendering the pain, Rosie stresses the importance of validating the emotions. After Jenni's tragic death and the difficult aftermath, Rosie had to vulnerably share her brokenness with her new husband Abel which strengthened their respect for each other. When faced with adversity, Rosie has trust that God works in his own time. “Dream little girl dreams.” Get a copy of Rosie Rivera's God is Your Defender here. Life after trauma: Whether divorce, bankruptcy, natural disaster or anything in between — we've all faced trauma. Expert psychologist Dr. Laurie Nadel shares proven techniques to find healing on ep. 91.   ROSIE RIVERA'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 What is the best book you've ever read? Other than the Bible, East of Eden by John Steinbeck. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? My ability to forgive quickly. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? A folder with all our birth certificates, pictures, drawings, USBs with everything. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? I'd love to have one more conversation with my sister Jenni Rivera and ask her what emotions she had about my sexual abuse. She took care of me so well that I never realized how much it could have affected her. What is the best advice you've ever received? “You could sit there and pity yourself. Or you can get off your butt and we can do something about it.” What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? It gets better, there is truly a lot of people that love you but begin loving yourself first. It's been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? She was a bold woman of faith who loved well. *** About our sponsor: Keeley Companies wholeheartedly believes that if you get the people right -the results will follow. We have never experienced anything like COVID-19 in our lifetime and people are scared, myself included. Many of us are dealing with high levels of acute stress, irritability, and sleep disruption. My guest today is Laurie Nadel, Ph.D. Dr. Laurie is a very well-known author, psychotherapist, disaster stress expert and is considered a thought leader in the emerging field of acute stress and PTSD. Dr. Laurie has been a guest on Oprah, CNN, Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell and George Noory, and numerous TV and radio shows in the U.S. and Europe. She has been interviewed about her work with PTSD populations in such major news media as the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Newsday, Reuters News Service, and other publications around the world. Dr. Laurie, is uniquely qualified to help us find the calm amid the crisis; she helped first responders after 9/11 and teens who lost fathers in the Twin Towers, as well as teachers and students in the aftermath of the Parkland school shooting. Her book, The Five Gifts, is like an emergency ‘Go-Kit' for the mind that minimizes and prevents long-term damage from traumatic events. Dr. Laurie and I talk about how COVID19 is impacting people emotionally and what we can do to help ourselves and each other get through this. Dr. Laurie in my view is a hero. Making the Best Salads (0:00:00)Salad –Whether you're a die-hard fan or think they're utterly boring, it can be hard to prepare a salad that really stands out. It's one of those foods where, when you taste one that's exceptionally delicious, it makes you think, “Why don't I eat salads more often?” So, this morning we called in a professional to help us figure out how to make a salad that consists of more than just lettuce and ranch dressing. Joining us on the show today is Sarah Jampel, recipe developer and editor of Basically at Bon Appetit, to share with us her tips for making extraordinary and delicious salads.  Emotional Needs (0:13:53)We all have different needs. Some of us need our daily chocolate fix. Others need a vacation on the beach. But one thing we all have in common is that we all have emotional needs. Needs that, if met, leave us feeling happy and satisfied. But what are emotional needs and how can we fill them? We invited Bob Stahn, mental health counselor and author of “ Get Your Needs Met!,” a book of positive psychology, onto the show today to answer these questions.  Stress Awareness Month (0:33:48)As we enter month two of COVID-19, the long-term effects of living in a pandemic are starting to become more obvious. Not only are we running out of shows to watch on Netflix, but it is getting harder for a lot of people to maintain their mental health. Stress, worry, and anxiety are have become a part of daily life, and many of us aren't prepared to handle these emotions. So what can we do? As part of Stress Awareness Month, we've invited a specialist in acute stress and trauma, Dr. Laurie Nadel.  Kids and Body Image (0:50:35)We all have our insecurities, and it seems like the internet knows how to point them out. It's so easy to compare ourselves to the people we see on Instagram. But, when our young kids see displays of what the world considers “perfect” bodies online, it can really have a negative impact on their own self esteem. We want to make sure our kids feel confident in their own skin and stop trying to live up to unrealistic body standards. So, we invited body image coach and fat activist, Amanda Martinez Beck, to teach us more about how to talk to our kids about body image.  Managing Your Eating Habits (1:08:32)Right now is an especially difficult time to eat right. We're all at home, surrounded by tempting treats, and we succumb to those temptations more than we'd probably like to admit. But right now could also be a great time for us to really start eating healthy and treating our bodies right. To find out how we can manage our eating habits, we invited registered dietitian-nutritionist and friend of the show, Laura Silver.  Weekend Review (1:25:20)Lisa and Richie talk about what there is to do this weekend, from new streaming shows to the New York Times Bestseller list.

Learn how the 5 gifts can help you through turbulent times. Dr. Laurie Nadel spent the first twenty years of her career working in TV newsrooms and as a field reporter.  She recognized that people whose lives were shattered by sudden, violent events would need long-term support.  After nearly a decade at CBS News as a writer-producer, Dr. Nadel wrote her four-time best-seller “Dr. Laurie Nadel’s Sixth Sense: Unlocking Your Ultimate Mind Power” which led to her earning two doctorates: in psychology and clinical hypnotherapy.  Since 1991, she has focused on helping people recover from catastrophic life events—from car accidents, to sexual assault and workplace abuse, natural disasters and terrorism.  Dr. Laurie has given workshops to teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and to members of the Parkland community. After losing her home to Hurricane Sandy, she ran long-term programs for people in her community who were struggling with post-trauma issues. Dr Laurie also directed a program for teenagers whose fathers were killed in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.  Her new book, “The Five Gifts: Discovering Hope, Healing and Strength When Disaster Strikes”, has a Foreword by Dan Rather and was voted one of the best books of 2018 by Library Journal.

A lot of people don't realize that grief and tragedy can take literally years to get to a point of acceptance with it. And while it's a very real process for anyone going through it, so many people around them want you to just “get over it” and stop feeling the way you're feeling. It's not that easy, and today's guest, Dr. Laurie Nadel, is here to tell you how you can use humanity's greatest gifts to work through your pain. Dr. Laurie Nadel is a writer and psychotherapist who spent 20 years on the front lines of many traumatic events, from wars to hurricanes. She's used this experience to fuel her quest and education into grief, trauma, and acute stress. Laurie tells us about another first-hand traumatic event she witnessed, when Hurricane Katrina flooded her house, and what it was like watching your heaviest furniture floating in the rising waters. In this episode of Couch Talk, Laurie shares with us how she was called to the premise of her book, The Five Gifts, and what each of these gifts are. It's easy to get stuck in a “woe is me” thought cycle when a tragedy befalls you. When you practice humility, you learn to reframe your question of “why me?” to “why not me?” This shift in attitude can completely alter your outlook on life and your current circumstances. Perhaps one of the most important parts of this episode is how Laurie explains you can, and should, be there for someone going through trauma and grief. It's not always about being there when they're going through it and then leaving, but about sticking around and supporting them through the long haul. Our loved ones who need help will still need help 6 months and more down the road, too. We talk about the other gifts and how you should take each of them into consideration when you're experiencing and supporting through trauma. We also note that there is a difference between post-traumatic growth and post-traumatic stress disorder…. And bring up the many different experiences that can bring these mental health problems into being. How do you help support your friends and family who are experiencing trauma? Do you apply the five gifts to your life circumstances? When have you witnessed a tragedy bring out the best of humanity? In This Episode: How witnessing the horrors of war caused Laurie to examine different careers What it's like to experience your house flooding from a hurricane How tragedy can bring out the best in humanity What the five gifts are and how they came to Dr. Laurie Nadel How you can apply humility to your tragic situations and experiences What having humility can help us connect to How you can be there for other people who are experiencing grief What post-traumatic growth is and how it is related to post-traumatic stress disorder How extreme weather events can have an impact on mental health How long you should wait before connecting with a friend experiencing grief Quotes: “Healing very often takes 3-5 years and people stop wanting to help after 2-3 months. A lot of people don’t realize that grief and tragedy can take literally years to get to a point of acceptance with it. And while it’s a very real process for anyone going through it, so many people around them want you to just “get over it” and stop feeling the way you’re feeling. It’s not that easy, and today’s guest, Dr. Laurie Nadel, is here to tell you how you can use humanity’s greatest gifts to work through your pain. Dr. Laurie Nadel is a writer and psychotherapist who spent 20 years on the front lines of many traumatic events, from wars to hurricanes. She’s used this experience to fuel her quest and education into grief, trauma, and acute stress. It’s easy to get stuck in a “woe is me” thought cycle when a tragedy befalls you. It’s not always about being there when they’re going through it and then leaving, but about sticking around and supporting them through the long haul. Our loved ones who need help will still need help 6 months and more down the road, too. We talk about the other gifts and how you should take each of them into consideration when you’re experiencing and supporting through trauma. In This Episode: How witnessing the horrors of war caused Laurie to examine different careers What it’s like to experience your house flooding from a hurricane How tragedy can bring out the best in humanity What the five gifts are and how they came to Dr. They want you to be over it.” (11:15) “Nobody gets a free pass from suffering. Money doesn’t buy you the free pass from suffering. Tragic loss can happen, and does happen, to people on the planet every single day.” (16:10) “Patience is the gift that allows us to accept that we are where we are. And it’s okay. The Five Gifts This Thursday, on The Conscious Consultant Hour, Sam welcomes author and psychologist Dr. Laurie Nadel. Dr. Laurie Nadel has a dual career in media and psychology. As a network news writer/producer for 20 years, she came to recognize that people whose lives were shattered by catastrophic events – also known as “breaking news” – would need long-term support. After completing two doctorates, she opened a private practice in New York City specializing in acute stress, trauma, phobias, and PTSD. For 2 1/2 years, she ran a program for teenagers whose fathers were killed on September 11th; and after losing her own home to Hurricane Sandy, she ran long-term programs for people in her community who needed emotional support due to the long-term damage that follows a disaster. Her new book The Five Gifts: Discovering Hope, Healing and Strength When Disaster Strikes has a Foreword by Dan Rather. It is her 7th book; She is the author of a four-time bestseller “Sixth Sense: Unlocking Your Ultimate Mind Power.” She is a contributing writer at “Our Time Press,” an award-winning Brooklyn weekly. “The Five Gifts” is nominated for Best Self-Help Book in 2018 by Library Journal. Segment 1: Sam opens up with the quote of the day from the universe about pain. Pain is almost informative. When we are young, we learn what is pain and when we are mature, we learn early on about what else can cause pain. For elderly souls, we use pain to look within. Pain is the opportunity for us to reflect. The quote from Abraham is about the void or vortex, feelings that we are in alignment with. We learn more about pain from our failure than our successes. The topic of today: The Five Gifts. Segment 2: Sam introduced Dr. Laurie Nadel, who has a dual career in communication and psychology. Dr. Laurie talks about the lost of her home to Hurricane Sandy and how she understands what people are going through after the effect of the storm. She goes into the discussion about being mentally and financially stable and in our culture we aren't use to instabilities. Dr. Laurie also discusses the recovery process after a natural disaster. Segment 3: Dr. Laurie talks about the fine line between positive thinking and denial, as well as the importance of supplies and it isn't negative to be prepared. Dr. Laurie also discussed weather hype. She even talks about how the schools would prepare in the 1950s. Preparation is important and it all depends on your mindset. The importance about how we grow through lost and how grief doesn't set in until a year later. Segment 4: To expect the unexpected. Dr. Laurie talks more about the different ways to be prepared before, during, and the after weather storms. Dr. Laurie talks about the importance of insurance and what to do in a time of a crisis. She explains different ways to avoid the long term after effects, like staying around people, especially when you are in stocked. She explains what we can do when we are away from home when disaster strikes. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-conscious-consultant-hour8505/donations

Our guest discusses coping strategies to bring hope, healing, and strength even in disaster. Dr. Laurie Nadel is a specialist in acute stress, trauma, and anxiety issues and author of The Five Gifts: Discovering Hope, Healing, and Strength When Disaster Strikes. Her first career, as a journalist, led her to spend twenty years writing and producing hard news, meaning those grisly clips of people whose lives were going along normally until a sudden, violent event ripped the ground out from under them. Though her work required detachment and focus, she often wondered what happened to those people after the cameras left. In 1987, while covering the Iran-Contra hearings for CBS News she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome due to CMV (cytomegalovirus). However, at that time conventional medical treatment for the virus did not exist. This opened the doorway for Laurie to begin studying meditation and seeking natural alternatives to regain health. At that time she changed career direction and completed two doctorates through independent study: a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology and a second doctorate in clinical hypnotherapy. Later, she completed post-doctoral diplomas in clinical training in mind-body medicine as well as clinical homeopathy. Part of each year was spent traveling and studying with indigenous healers. In 1991 Dr. Laurie Nadel opened her private practice, focusing on stress and health issues, especially burnout; anxiety/phobias; and trauma issues. In April of 2018, she published The Five Gifts: Discovering Hope, Healing and Strength When Disaster Strikes. Although the “help cycle” after a disaster lasts about three months, it takes three to five years to recover emotionally.  The five gifts that we need for the long haul are humility, patience, empathy, forgiveness, and growth. Dr. Laurie Nadel shared how she was able to better relate to her mother after learning about the Myers Briggs personality types. Dr. Laurie Nadel's first book was a 4-time bestseller + on Oprah's book club twice: Sixth Sense: The Whole-Brain Book of Intuition, Hunchies, Gut Feelings, and Their Place in Your Everyday Life  "This book changes lives, in terms of understanding how how you think and process who you are." Her most recent book came out in April 2018: The Five Gifts: Discovering Hope, Healing and Strength When Disaster Strikes "This is a tool for people in the midst of tragedy. Open it and something will pop out you can use for self care." The 5 Gifts: humility, patience, empathy, forgiveness, growth.  Something like a school shooting or natural disaster, they rip away the fabric of what we thought normal was. When they occur, we have to find a way of balancing in the midst of emotional chaos for sometime. You can swipe it away when you see it on your screen, but when it happens to you in real life, you can’t change the channel. At a certain point you're out of shock and can start to think about next week instead of just getting through the day. When we start to feel like we can get through a week is when we have the strength or enlarged capacity to connect with people as a result of what we’ve been through. Three Cycles of Loss (when you can't go back to who you were before the injury, car accident, bankruptcy, tragic event): Loss of control of your physical environment. Loss of safety, you may be emotionally fragile. Loss of identity / who you are now. For another "Live Inspired" take on this topic, check out Ep. #4 with Michaela Haas as she explores + explains: Post Traumatic Growth. DR. LAURIE NADEL’S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Catcher in the Rye and Catch 22. These two seminal books of the 60s have characters who are authentic and think in questions. They question authority. I admire them and hope I never stop questioning.  2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? My imagination has been tempered by reality and the real world. I was an excellent creative writer, I made up stories. I wish I had a more active imagination. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? I would have grabbed the original edition of the Wizard of Oz that I was saving for my grandchildren. The beautiful books from my childhood were destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Dan Rather, I’m fortunate and privileged that he has been my mentor, believer and supporter of my book. I’m always fascinated by what he has to say with where we are now in America as compared to all of the cycles he has seen in the course of his lifetime and what we can learn from that to move forward and be more empathetic. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Dan always gives me great advice: Just keep writing. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Calm down a little bit. I was definitely wild. I wouldn’t want to clip her wings or put the breaks on, but I have a lot of people who come into my practice for therapy in their mid to late 20s because what we learn during this season is that the rules of life and family culture we learn through childhood don’t always apply to the world at large. The world is very different when you actually get out there and have to make your way in it. Be careful but be open. 7. What are the keys to staying balanced under pressure? I don't just mean during. I am asking what are they even after, waaay after, when everyone else seems to be moving past a trauma and the focus is off? I never used to think that stress was a thing. It was all just good stress. Then my body and brain started to take a little longer to come to center and then, one day, it seemed I was living a new normal where I could never seem to shake flashbacks to unsettling events and moments. I searched for answers. Well really for the questions that would allow the right answers to come to me to help. My guest has lived through personal traumas on large scale and on personal small scales in war zones and even in her own home during Hurricane Sandy on Long Island in New York.
