Episode 84 was inspired by a recent discovery meeting between Mike and a smaller company looking for his help to take their new business development game to a new level. During the conversation, Mike shared his simple “Buckets of Blame” framework to help these executives get a big picture 30,000-foot view of five potential obstacles that may be preventing their sales team from bringing in new business at the desired rate – and to estimate the percentage of “blame” to attribute to each of the five buckets. Take a listen to see which of these buckets might be preventing you (or your team) from winning MORE NEW SALES. Mike wraps up the episode with a reminder to sales leaders about the power and value from having salespeople draft individual business plans for the coming year and points you to several valuable resources to help with that initiative. On this week's Pride special, we are taking you back to a dark time for LGBT representation in children's entertainment where the idea of a same-sex kiss was shot down by corporate meddling in the pre-production phase. Ok...maybe not that far back. Back in 2017, a little Nelvana magical girl show could have been one of the first steps forward for moderate representation of LGBT characters. Unfortunately for Mysticons, Nickelodeon was not willing to support the production team's vision. And we needed to sell toys...a capitalist tale as old as time. For way too long, toxic masculinity has run rife. Men have been taught to be tough, not to cry, don't show emotions and all the other damaging rhetoric. They've also been subjected to abuse and put downs for showing signs of kindness and warmth. This has to stop. The four men I talk about in this episode are indeed putting a stop to the harmful narrative that causes many men to self-loath and in some cases, take their own life. Mark MacManus, Matt Ferguson, Leigh McDonald and Steven Baker aren't afraid to cry, and are actively sharing their stories in an effort to support men and others to ask for help and believe in themselves. Essentially they want people to know they are ok just the way they are.Socials:The Restoration Project https://www.facebook.com/restorationgippsland/Build Grit with Steven Bakerhttps://www.facebook.com/buildGRIThttps://www.buildgrit.com.au/Matthew Fergusonhttps://www.instagram.com/mattyferg21/?hl=enChronic Traumatic EncephalopathyAccording to the Boston University CTE Center, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative brain disease found in athletes, military veterans, and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma. Hope emphasizes that everyone should comprehend the business context and constraints. “It was just a learning moment for me in terms of, do you really have [a] shared vision?” she tells Barry. “Does everybody on the team really understand the business context of what we're trying to do?” This situation was common in the early 2000s tech landscape, Barry says. “There's still plenty of companies living in that world of siloed teams, lack of cross-functional groups.”Jack of Many TradesHope shares a key moment from her professional evolution, recounting a significant turning point when Matt Ferguson, the CEO of CareerBuilder, offered her a position. Hope initially turned down the role due to personal reasons, but Matt persisted, expressing a genuine belief in her potential and leaving the door open for future collaboration. This persistence became a catalyst for Hope's subsequent transition to CareerBuilder. It demonstrates how a leader's perseverance can reshape an individual's career trajectory. Hope's career evolution also highlights her adaptability. She navigated various roles, from AOL to CareerBuilder. Her eagerness to find ways to grow the business and diversify revenue streams led to her role as Chief Product Officer. From Chief to CoachHope's transition from being a leader in various companies to becoming a coach and advisor wasn't a predetermined career move, she shares. Barry prompts Hope to reflect on this shift, asking about the triggers and the unlearning process required. Hope's career shift was triggered by certain constraints she experienced in her role as CPO. At CareerBuilder, she faced the challenge of training and developing individuals from diverse backgrounds into product-related roles due to certain constraints. This experience became foundational for her belief in the coachability and trainability of product leader roles. Her coaching venture was a result of requests for interim consulting, leading to her collaboration with Teresa Torres. Reflecting on her coaching transition, Hope shares, “Knowing what types of skills I think are coachable and trainable, and knowing that was something that I got a lot of satisfaction doing and had seen a lot of different scenarios [of], is what gave me confidence that I could do this to a certain segment of people."Looking AheadHope advises listeners to focus on fundamental questions such as understanding the customer, evaluating alternatives, and articulating the unique value proposition, emphasizing the importance of alignment and shared understanding within product teams to drive forward progression.ResourcesHope Gurion on LinkedIn | X(Twitter)Fearless Product

What If the Jab Were a Puff? A Look at Drug Delivery to the Lungs In this episode we explore the advantages of using inhalers for drug delivery with Lonza experts Kim Shepard and Matt Ferguson. In late 2022, China introduced the world's first Covid-19 vaccine to be inhaled into the lungs. The Chinese scientists who developed the vaccine tout its ability to directly stimulate the immune system's first line of defense – the lungs' mucous membrane. However, vaccines are just the tip of the inhaler iceberg. While we all are familiar with metered-dose inhalers, as well as nebulizers, for asthma, a whole range of therapeutic options for many diseases are becoming available through the technology known as dry-powder inhalers, or DPI. While the first commercially available DPIs appeared in the seventies, recent advances have opened the door to treatments for diabetes and even cancer. As with the Covid-19 vaccine, direct delivery to the lungs can be more efficient, but it also has the advantage of lowering toxicity by bypassing the liver altogether. Still, getting the correct amount of the molecule to the right part of the lung without unwanted immune responses is tricky business. Recently developed manufacturing techniques and new types of molecules make drug inhalers a continually evolving field full of potential advantages for patients. Curious to Know More? Listen to this episode of A View On Manufacturing Inhaled Drug Products to learn more about what it takes to develop effective treatments with insights from Lonza's Associate Director, R&D, Kim Shepard and Matt Ferguson, Lonza's Head of Respiratory Drug Delivery.

On this episode, Sabine VdL interviews Matt Connolly, entrepreneur and platform builder to the insurance sector. He's also the CEO of Sønr - the world's #1 InsurTech scouting and open innovation platform. On this episode Matt talks about himself, his idea to build the Sønr platform.   KEY TAKEAWAYS I always knew I wanted to start my own company, but I didn't know what it was going to be or what I wanted to invent. The only relevant professional experience I had was working for a digital agency but my friend and I set up a web design company in 2003 that was going to deliver strategy, creative and tech for the web. Five years later the business was very successful and became the number one digital agency in the UK. It was a very unusual position to be in as a 20-something. I always wanted to push, push and push again. I'm never satisfied. They are terrible traits in somebody, but they are also great traits for an entrepreneur. I hope I'm able to do that with a level of empathy for those around me. Staff retention supports my belief that I'm able to create a good culture and be a good leader within my organisation. And, those traits really do drive me forward.  Having control of the DNA of a company and setting culture is a great responsibility and one of the most important things to achieve as a successful founder. Once you have that right the rest of the business will flow. Fun has to be a large part of that. As a founder you start off with your feet firmly under the desk. You are involved in shaping the operation of the business, KPIs, growth metrics and all those kinds of things and you can forget about having fun, that's where my co-founder, Matt Ferguson, is great at continuously reminding me and us, to remember the fun part of work. He makes sure we are going out, we talk and connect. You need to set a vision and have a purpose within that vision and ensure that vision is brought into, and possibly even co-created, by people within the team. If you have that and everybody buys into it and you set a clear pathway to achieving that – whether you're ahead of it or behind it – then everybody will rally and do their best to make that happen. I've always felt it should be somewhat of a democracy in the culture of a business. Rather than employ people to fulfil specific roles, I'd rather employ exceptional talent, understand where they are best deployed and allow them to function with that intent. That allows them to do the thing they love the best, and invariably they're the best at, to create the right resourcing landscape to achieve our vision.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Employ people that are more talented than yourself.'  ‘You will always overestimate what you can or will achieve in one year, but you will always underestimate what you can achieve in 10. I need to remind myself of that, I'm an incredibly impatient man.' ‘Always check in with each other and have those “high five” moments and check in and look after yourself en route.' ‘I am much better at encouraging others to have fun than doing it myself. But if you're not having fun and living another life outside of work you become a one-dimensional person and that's never going to be healthy for you.'   ABOUT THE GUEST Matt is the CEO of Sønr - the world's #1 InsurTech scouting and open innovation platform. Sønr is a subscription-based platform that houses the world's most comprehensive source of innovation intelligence, designed specifically for the insurance innovator.  It is used by some of the best-known insurance companies globally including Allianz, Bupa, Generali, Munich Re, Tokio Marine. In November 2020, Oregon voters approved Measure 110, essentially decriminalizing possession of small amounts of drugs — from heroin to cocaine to opioid pills. Instead of criminal penalties, the law calls for treatment centers to be set up all over the state, so addiction could be treated as a health care issue, not a law enforcement issue. he problem, law enforcement says, is that has led to a huge increase in the amount of drugs on the streets — and now, an increase in crime. KGW joined Sgt. Matt Ferguson, the leader of the Special Investigations Unit of the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, for a ride-along to see what that looks like. On this day, Ferguson and his team partnered with Portland Police to run surveillance on a motel in Northeast Portland.
