On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson explores the wonderful world of sports across the Golden State with three notable experts. First, Johnson speaks with Natalie Nakase, head coach of the Golden State Valkyries, the WNBA's newest team making its debut in San Francisco. Nakase, the first Asian American coach in the league's history, shares her vision for the team and reflects on the rising momentum behind women's basketball. She also describes how she hopes to create a dynamic game-day environment at Chase Stadium. "I hope that they come in and they have a great time and it feels like a party that they can't wait to watch, but also not leave," she says. Plus, Nakase shares how she enjoys spending time when she's not courtside in San Francisco. Next, Johnson catches up with Benjamin Hill of MLB.com to discuss California's fun-filled and easily accessible minor league baseball scene. “It's just such a smaller, friendlier world where you can get up close to the field, you can get up close to the players,” says Hill. He then dives into ballpark adventures he's had across the Golden State, from meeting churro-inspired mascots in San Jose to biting into asparagus-topped hot dogs in Stockton. Hill also highlights recent changes in California's minor league, including the departure of the Modesto Nuts and the addition of a new team in Ontario. Finally, Johnson heads to the Palm Springs Surf Club with professional surfer and operations manager Nate Acker. Acker explains how the state-of-the-art facility is bringing wave riding to the desert and giving people of all skill levels a chance to experience the joy of surfing. "We get groups that come in that have never surfed before," he says. "I love that the most because it's so fun to get people in the water and riding waves that have never done it." Acker also details the wide array of sun-soaked activities available to non-surfers at the club.
Brady is back on a Friday talking about the M's 3-4 start and the type of "torture ball" they play. He says everything seems hard and tense as they roll into San Francisco for the first road trip of the year. After a field trip to see the Fredericksburg Nationals, Patti and the Pottymouth recorded this snack-sized, but jam-packed, episode over pizza and beer and perilously close to corn hole. The good news is we did NOT get kicked out of the ballpark (officially or recreationally) for sharing any of our opinions which appeared to differ greatly from the majority of the fans in the park, if t-shirt sentiments are to be believed, nor for the expressly stated “no profanity” rule. The other good news is Stephen Strasburg looked great in his re-hab assignment,we got to meet Patti's adopted minor leaguer, the FredNats won, and we found Adventure Brewing and Rosie's Pizza Truck. This week was a tipping point in “sticking to sports” as calls for sensible gun laws permeated media interviews, video boards, and social media. Gabe Kapler takes a stand by not standing but making sure we know why, Natasha Cloud calls for backup and Sean Doolittle responds, and the Yankees and Rays social media teams jump into the fray.Pottymouth witnessed Juan Soto's 200th double and shared quality time with the Nat's Woo Guy. In other boyfriend news, Ildemara Vargas goes to Rochester, Bobby Witt becomes a doubles machine, George Springer makes a difference, and this piece about Adley Rutschman is a must-read of the week. Gerardo Parra retires – but not completely. Pottymouth profiles Verónica Hernández, of the Modesto Nuts, the first Latina GM in an affiliated team, and holds her example out as a possible career path for Patti. In our Police Blotter, MLB calls out ballparks at all levels for not providing the required adequate facilities for women traveling with teams, and gives them a deadline to show how they will make it right. Josh Donaldson is suspended for calling Tim Anderson “Jackie,” and Tommy Pham is out for three games for slapping Joc Pederson over old fantasy league beef.We say “They shuffle on the bottom,” “That's my Woo situation,” and “Really good with pickles!”Get boosted, fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, and find us on Twitter @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. The all-new NBC museum Always give more than you take Learn more about the Wichita Wind Surge:https://www.milb.com/wichitaFacebook ProfileInstagram ProfileTwitter ProfileThe Wind Surge were supposed to begin play in 2020 as the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins in the Pacific Coast League. However, a combination of the cancellation of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Major League Baseball's realignment of the minor leagues for 2021, resulted in the team changing to Double-A as affiliates of the Twins without having played a Triple-A game.Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wind Surge were scheduled to begin their inaugural season on the road playing against the Round Rock Express on April 8, 2020, and to play their first home game on April 14 against the Memphis Redbirds. Initially postponed due to the pandemic, the season was ultimately cancelled on June 30. That summer, owner Lou Schwechheimer also passed awayIn 2021, the team dropped to the Double-A classification without having played a Triple-A game due to Major League Baseball's realignment of the minor leagues after the 2020 season. Instead of being a Miami Marlins affiliate, the Wind Surge became affiliated with the Minnesota Twins. The Wind Surge went on to win the Northern Division title by finishing the 2021 season in first place with a 69–51 record. They qualified for the championship playoffs by possessing the league's best record. In the best-of-five series, they were defeated by the second-place Northwest Arkansas Naturals, 3–2. Wichita manager Ramon Borrego was selected as the league's Manager of the Year.Graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Fresno State University, California, in 2008, Bob then began working for a casual luxury retailer. Although he worked up to a management role, where he was leading a team of 1,000+ workers, after eight years with the company, Bob decided to make a major career change. In 2013, Bob took an internship with the California League, Colorado Rockies affiliate, Modesto Nuts. In this position, he was responsible for many different responsibilities including developing of the Nuts' social media, marketing, and advertising platforms. In fall of 2016, Bob joined the then named New Orleans Zephyrs as the team embarked on a complete rebrand, transforming into the Baby Cakes. The Baby Cakes rebranding was hugely successful, resulting in over three-quarters of million dollars in merchandise revenue, in a little over one year. Following the 2017 season, Bob was promoted to assistant general manager. In this role, he was responsible for marketing; social media; and all game day responsibilities, employees, training, and the internship program. Thanks to his previous experience in the retail management and internet marketing industries, Bob was able to apply his versatile skills to many aspects of his baseball responsibilities.Bob moved once again from New Orleans to Wichita as he excitedly joined in the process to aid in the building of the Wichita Wind Surge brand. Now, as Director of Fan Experience, he is currently responsible for the many aspects of the business as it relates to the fan experience, but also overseas many aspects of Riverfront Stadium operations and is heavily involved in the Wichita community.A little over a year ago he and his wife Stephanie made their very first house purchase in the Riverside Neighborhood.Other Resources:Join the Wichita Regional Chamber of Commerce! Gabe Morency and Joe Raineri open the show talking about how Joe was going to be in NYC for a few extra days, until he was scared off by Newark Airport, and headed back to Miami. The guys go over some NBA free agency rumors, starting with the fact that the Celtics are looking like a horrible destination for any free agent, including Kemba Walker. Gabe goes to say that Walker's current team, the Charlotte Hornets, have nothing to offer their star player, despite the presence of Michael Jordan. Bobby DeMuro is one of the scribes at noted Rockies $hill site Purple Row, and he was so kind as to join us for the 80th edition of this noted Rockies $hill podcast. Inside, you'll find all kinds of goodies about the Modesto Nuts, like Tyler Matzek's journey through rediscovering himself, top prospects such as Dom Nunez and Forrest Wall, and more. The Tao of Sports Podcast – The Definitive Sports, Marketing, Business Industry News Podcast
Mike Savit has operated several minor league baseball franchises across the country, including the Michigan Battle Cats, Mobile Bay Bears, Modesto Nuts and Augusta Green Jackets, along a team in the Coastal Plain League of the Carolinas. But his heart remains with the NBADL’s Springfield Armor which he founded in New England in 2009. Savit talks about the league’s prospering future, marketing & ticketing concepts, and how to lead employees. Great conversation with Savit as Tao of Sports was his first podcast interview (he was initially pranked into thinking the entire conversation would last 5 hours!).
