¡No os prometo que este sea el mejor podcast de la historia de Garaje Hermético! Pero sí puede que sea el que más vas a disfrutar con la vista, porque te traemos coches muy bonitos, realmente bellos. No serán los mejores descapotables ni los más rápidos ni los más sofisticados, pero sí aquellos que han hecho historia. ¡Estamos en verano! Y me apetecía hablar de descapotables. Porque son coches que siempre me han gustado, pero desde un tiempo a esta parte no es que me gusten… en que me apasionan…Me compré mi primer descapotable más o menos en 2012, un Mazda MX5 NC de techo duro. Y al poco tiempo decidí que mi coche digamos “principal” seria siempre un descapotable. Uso mi coche más veces descapotado que con techo. Basta que no llueva y que la temperatura sea de 12 o 14 grados para que me ponga un chaleco de plumas, una gorra, conecte la calefacción … ¡y a disfrutar! No soy el único, porque los descapotables son cautivadores… y si no, juzgad vosotros mismos. 1. BMW 328 (1936). El más antiguo. De BMW había mucho donde escoger, pero he elegido este 328 no por ser el más antiguo, sino porque creo que representa los valores de BMW mejor que ninguno, esos valores de calidad, deportividad y agrado de conducción. Confieso que la marca BMW me gusta… desde luego no todos sus modelos. Si llevan una X por ahí, me salen sarpullidos. 2. Morgan Plus (1950). Eterno. Un coche eterno porque nació en 1950 pero con algunos paréntesis, diversos cambios de propietarios, un sinfín de motores… sigue fabricándose hoy día casi igual a como se hacía en 1950. Y no, no lleva chasis de madera como he leído y oído por ahí sino un robusto chasis de largueros de acero. Lo que sucede es que la carrocería de paneles de aluminio o acero, según años y versiones, se sustenta en una estructura de madera fresno, bien tratada, ligera y casi eterna. 3. Renault Floride (1958). Un Dauphine de diseño italiano. Renault veía como marcas de otros países triunfaban en todo el mundo, y sobre todo en los USA, con pequeños descapotables bonitos, divertidos y asequibles. Así que utilizó el mismo sistema: Partir de un coche popular, el Dauphine, también conocido según mercados y modelos como Ondine o Gordini y ponerle una carrocería atractiva. 4. Jaguar E (1961). El más bonito. Lo hemos dicho muchas veces en este canal, si nada menos que Enzo Ferrari dijo que este coche “era el automóvil más hermoso del Mundo” no sé qué vamos a añadir nosotros, pobres mortales en comparación con “Il Commendatore”. 5. Triumph Spitfire (1962). Hecho de “retales”. Como en otros modelos de este vídeo, realmente se trata de una saga. Pero el primero aparece en el Salón de Londres de 1962 y, para ser la suma de unos cuantos “retales” tomados de un lado y otro, no podía ser más bonito ni más interesante. 6. Mercedes SL “Pagoda” (1963). Mi Mercedes favorito. ¡No os podréis quejar! Os prometí una lista de coche muy bonitos y estoy cumpliendo. Y este SL aparecido en 1963 y apodado “Pagoda” en muchos mercados por la forma de su techo duro, es de los más bonitos. 7. Alfa Romeo Spider “Duetto” (1966). Otro acierto de Pininfarina. La historia de este coche es curiosa y sorprendente. Porque cuando Alfa Romeo decide hacer un Spider piensa en Bertone, que en esos años era lo mismo que decir Giorgetto Giugiaro. Pero por una parte el diseño no convenció, pero sobre todo peso el hecho de que Alfa Romeo quería el diseño y la producción y Bertone estaba saturada con la fabricación del Fiat 850 Spider. 8. Fiat 124 Sport Spider (1966). Doble vida. Viendo este diseño de Pininfarina en colaboración con Tom Tjaarda, entonces jefe de estilo de Fiat, cuesta creer que debajo de ese bonito Spider hay uno de nuestros 124… solo que en España sí se fabricó, pocas unidades, el 850 Spider con marca Seat, pero nunca el 124… ¡qué pena! 9. MG Midget MKIII (1966). El coche de “Jane” El primer Midget nace en 1961 pero he elegido el MKIII por dos razones: Fue el primero que conocí en persona y el que realmente inició el “desembarco” de MG en los EE.UU. Como curiosidad, en su último año de vida, 1974, este modelo recibió uno paragolpes de gran tamaño para superar las normativas americanas de seguridad. Esos paragolpes recibieron el nombre de “Sabrinas” en referencia a los encantos de la actriz británica Sabrina que hizo, entre otros, el papel de Jane en la película “Tarzán” de 1966… ya sabéis que en GH somos muy cinéfilos. 10. Mazda MX5 (1989). Más de un millón. En un vídeo titulado “Descapotables que han hecho historia” no podía faltar el coche descapotable más vendido de la historia, el MX5 que sumando todas sus generaciones en el año 2016 superó la barrera del millón de coches. Conclusión. Sé que no todo el mundo puede tener un descapotable, pues es un coche absolutamente inútil… pero, si eres afortunado y puedes… no pierdas la ocasión.

Oirás y leerás muchas listas de modelos longevos… y cuando las compares con esta pensarás: “¡Algo falla! ¡No se parecen en nada!”. Pues no. Porque en esta lista hablamos de modelos longevos no de denominaciones longevas y… ¡no es los mismo! En Garaje Hermético somos diferentes. En estas listas aparecen modelos como el Ford Mustang, el Honda Civic, el VW Golf o los Toyota Corolla y Land Cruiser. Pero entre los modelos actuales y el original, no queda nada más que el nombre. 10. Renault 4. (33 años). Un enorme éxito y un coche fabricado en nueve países y durante 33 años. Nació para competir y superar al 2 CV y lo hizo por años de vida y por número de ventas. Quizás no sea tan icónico como el 2 CV, esto lo contamos en el vídeo patrocinado por la compañía de seguros AMV que ahora nos ayuda y que se titulado “Citroën 2CV vs. Renault 4: ¿la comparativa del siglo?”. Te invito a ver ese vídeo. 9. Land Rover Defender. (37 años). La verdad es que me siento un poco culpable, pero este coche podría liderar este ranking si consideramos que no cambió mucho en la generación que apareció en 1983 y se vendió hasta 2016. Pero desde luego entre el 48 y el 85 cambió poco. 8. Jeep Wrangler. (37 años). En el mundo del TT es más fácil la longevidad, como veremos en esta lista. El Jeep Wrangler, heredero directo del genuino Jeep apareció en 1987 y si pones uno de ese año y otro fabricado en la actualidad… verás que son, esencialmente, el mismo coche. Y con el mismo encanto. 7. Mini. (41 años). Sí, el Mini sigue existiendo fabricado por BMW y mucho más grande. Pero el original que nació en 1959 se mantuvo en vida con pocos cambios, muy pocos, quizás demasiado pocos, hasta el arranque del Siglo XXI, hasta el año 2000. Es sin duda si no el coche más influyente de la historia, uno de los más influyentes y su motor transversal y aprovechamiento del espacio crearon escuela.”. 6. Citroën 2 CV. (42 años). Desde que se puso a la venta en 1948 hasta el 1990, el 2 CV tuvo una larga vida de 42 años. Pero su diseño data de finales de los 30, aunque por temas relacionados con la Guerra no se pudo fabricar hasta después… sino hubiese rebasado la cincuentena. No voy a hablar mucho de este coche porque hemos hecho videos recientes sobre su suspensión, sobre su comparación con el R4 y no tan recientes, de “Historia ficción” sobre qué hubiese pasado si los nazis hubiesen encontrado los prototipos escondidos del 2 CV. Mercedes Clase G. (46 años). Aparecido en 1978 aún se vende y aún es considerado por muchos el mejor TT de la historia… Lo cierto es que Mercedes se tomó muy en serio el diseño de este coche y contó para mí con los mejores en estas cosas del TT y la tracción total: Los austríacos de Steyr. 4. Lada Niva. (52 años). Sin duda el Lada Niva se ha renovado, pero sigue siendo el mismo que se lanzó en 1972 y se sigue vendiendo en la actualidad. Creo que es el ejemplo paradigmático de que cuando un diseño es bueno, tanto técnico como estético, es atemporal. Hoy día ves un Niva y no parece la edad que tiene… 3. VW Beetle Tipo 1. (65 años). Un coche aparecido antes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y que se fabricó fuera de Europa, en México, hasta 2003… una larga vida. Incluso convivió con su sucesor, el fracasado Escarabajo o “new Beetle” de tracción delantera que apareció en 1997 y desapareció en 2020 tras 23 años de azarosa vida comercial… nada que ver. 2. Lotus Super Seven-Caterham. (67 años). Antes decía que hay modelos que mantienen el nombre y por supuesto la marca, pero son diferentes y en este caso pasa justo, al contrario, cambia de marca, pero el modelo es muy similar. Desde que nació de la mano del genial Chapman el Seven y después el Super Seven hasta hoy, que los fabrica Caterham Cars desde 1973, el concepto, la idea e incluso la fabricación ha cambiado poco. 1. Morgan Plus 4. (74 años). El primer Morgan Plus aparece en 1950 y de deja de hacer 11 años después, pero después aparece de nuevo en 1985 y se sigue fabricando hasta hoy día con no muchos cambios. Es verdad que ha llevado muchos motores de muchas marcas, pero eso desde el principio, porque Morgan no fabricaba sus propios motores.

Der Morgan Plus 8 – Holz, Blech, Power, handcrafted! Kein Morgan ist wie der andere – diese beliebte Weisheit hat einen realen Hintergrund. Wer mal die Werkshallen der Morgan Motor Company in der Grafschaft Worcestershire im Herzen Englands besucht hat, der weiß was gemeint ist. Betritt der geneigte Besucher nämlich die Werkshallen, fühlt er sich an den Anfang des vergangenen Jahrhunderts zurück katapultiert. Eifrige und sehr fähige Spengler, Schreiner und andere Handwerker fertigen hier die Automobile noch von Hand. Was am Morgen (das Wortspiel sei verziehen) noch eine große Blechtafel ist, hat seine Gestalt bis zum Abend bereits z.B. in eine Motorhaube verwandelt. Schreiner fertigen jedes der 94 Teile des Karosserie-Gerüsts von Hand aus Eschenholz. Das passt zur Zeitreise, denn die Idee Blechteile auf Eschenholz zu schrauben stammt aus dem Kutschbau. Diese Liebe zum Handwerk hat allerdings auch ihre Nachteile: einfach mal Teile tauschen ist so eine Sache – denn was an dem einen Morgan passt, muss mitunter an einem anderen Morgan erst mühsam und kenntnisreich angepasst werden. Am Ende wurde in dem rund eine Tonne schweren Gefährt ein potenter Achtzylinder-Motor von Rover verbaut, der dieser traditionsreichen Motor-Sport-Kutsche ordentlich Power verleiht. Fertig ist der zeitlos schöne Plus 8 der so von 1968 bis 2004 gebaut wurde. 2012 bis 2018 gabs nochmal ein Revival, dann aber optisch leicht und technisch stark verändert, so z.B. befeuerte nun ein BMW Motor den flotten Roadster. Olli findet den Morgan ganz hübsch – leider ist er in dieser Ausgabe mit anderen Dingen beschäftigt. Würdig vertreten wird er von Martin und Lutz, die beide profunde Kenner des Klassikers sind – schließlich pilotiert jeder ein Exemplar dieses „very british sports car“. Ron liebt das Auto wegen seiner Extravaganz und seiner Power während Frederic sehr angetan ist von dem zeitlosen Design. Mike Donick is the Senior Manager at Toyota responsible for their North American Ride and Handling R&D Activities. He and his Team are responsible for developing the ride and handling performance and hardware for all of Toyota’s North American developed vehicles. He has worked as a technician for the Skip Barber Racing School, spent a season in NASCAR and went into Automotive Engineering specializing in vehicle dynamics. Mike has raced sports cars and formula cars for over 19 years and participates in vintage racing, vintage car rallies, and hill climbs in his Allard K3, a ’66 Morgan Plus 4, and his latest project a Porsche 911 hotrod.
