Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - The city of Campbell River intends to remove the Campbell River Art Gallery's (CRAG) tax exemption, and will not allow the gallery to make a presentation at the October 12 council meeting where the final decision will be made. At the September 28 meeting, Councillor Ron Kerr moved to have the CRAG's exemption and that of the Vancouver Island Mental Health Society removed because of their ‘bad behaviour.' There was no one available to comment when Cortes Currents phoned the Vancouver Island Mental Health Society In an interview with Cortes Currents, Sara Lopez Assu, Executive Director of the CRAG states the city demanded the gallery tell the homeless people sleeping outside of their doors to leave. “I have no vested interest in allowing people to sleep in our entrances,” she explained. Assu does not intend to confront the homeless people. The RCMP advised her that it would be dangerous for gallery's staff, who are all women, to do so. The gallery's board of Directors told city council they are tennants of the Centennial Building, whose responsibility ends at the door. Instead of hostility, the gallery developed relationships with the people sleeping at their door. This includes telling them, “We need to open at 10 AM, please make sure that you're packed up. Please don't leave any messes for us.”  While the city will not allow the gallery to make a presentgtion, 142 of the hundreds of letters defending it are in the correspondeance section of the October 12 meeting. The first letter is from a woman expressed her astonishment that council is granting a 50% exemption to a golf course, while ‘stripping all of the exemptions for the two organizations that are actually being proactive in providing services and addressing solutions to help mitigate the ‘downtown issues.' That is followed by someone writing, “I was very disappointed to read that the Campbell River Art Gallery may have their entire tax exemption removed. To deem such an important part of our community ‘a bad neighbour' and ‘having an extreme detrimental effect on businesses and visitations downtown' is outrageous.” The third correspondent states, “There is a large community of artists and art supporters who are shocked at this decision. The Gallery will suffer and its existence will be jeopardized by the impact of a large tax bill. The CRAG is an incredible asset to the art and culture scene in Campbell River and surrounding area. Its importance cannot be overstated as it encourages and educates local artists, local and surrounding populations, and visitors through art exhibits, art lectures, and special events.” In a post thanking the community for its support, the gallery alludes to coverage by the CBC, Times Colonist, and CHEK News. We have an interesting this day in legal history entry for today, on this day, May 16, in 1868 President Andrew Johnson was acquitted in his impeachment trial. President Johnson was Abraham Lincoln's running mate in the 1864 election and was a sop to the south – prior to sharing a ticket Lincoln had never met him. After the Civil War, President Johnson clashed with Congress over the reconstruction of the South. He vetoed legislation aimed at protecting the rights of former slaves, leading to tension and disagreement with his own party. In 1868, the House of Representatives impeached Johnson, accusing him of violating the Tenure of Office Act by removing the Secretary of War. The trial then began in the Senate, where Republicans held the majority, but Johnson was acquitted because not enough senators supported his removal. Johnson's presidency was marked by his opposition to political rights for freedmen and his lenient reconstruction policies. He served out his term but faced significant opposition from Congress. Johnson later returned to the Senate, serving for 3 months before dying in 1875. He is frequently ranked by historians as among the worst American Presidents, with his predecessor Abraham Lincoln typically taking the top spot. Those are difficult shoes to fill, I suppose. All the same, not a great guy. Wells Fargo has agreed to pay $1 billion to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by shareholders. The lawsuit accused the bank of making misleading statements regarding its compliance with federal consent orders after the 2016 scandal involving unauthorized customer accounts. Shareholders alleged that former CEO Tim Sloan and other executives provided misleading information to Congress, investors, and the media, painting a more positive picture of their interactions with regulators than was accurate. The settlement funds will be distributed to investors who purchased Wells Fargo stock between February 2, 2018, and March 12, 2020. This settlement follows previous settlements related to the bank's fake-accounts scandal in 2016 and a shareholder settlement in 2018. In 2020, Wells Fargo agreed to pay $3 billion to settle US investigations into consumer abuses.Wells Fargo to Pay $1 Billion in Class-Action Lawsuit (1)Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) removed a disclosure metric called economic value of equity (EVE) from its year-end 2022 financial statement, just two weeks before the bank's collapse in March 2023. For the past decade, SVB had provided this metric to demonstrate how interest rate fluctuations would impact its financial health. The removal of EVE, which was expected to show a bleak picture of the bank's situation amid rising rates and depositors withdrawing funds, raises questions about the role of the bank's auditor, KPMG LLP. The financial statement offers no explanation for the removal, and KPMG has not commented on the disclosure changes. Auditors are expected to question significant changes in disclosures and raise concerns when necessary. The omission of EVE, which could have served as a warning sign of growing risks associated with the bank's long-term assets, has drawn attention to the auditor's responsibilities in reviewing management sections of financial statements. Auditors primarily focus on the audited financial statement but are expected to review the management section for inconsistencies and misleading information. However, auditors have limited authority to demand disclosures or address forward-looking risk scenarios. The discretion given to reporting entities allows them to withhold important information from financial statement users.Regular consumers of Minimum Competence will remember our reporting on the recent collapses of Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank, and the near miss at First Republic Bank and the raised concerns about the role of Big Four accounting firms in these failures. The problem lies in the close relationships between accounting firms and the banks they audit, potentially leading to conflicts of interest and a lack of incentive to disclose potential problems. Well the latest Newshub Reid Research poll has the Labour / Green government still the most popular, yet if ever we needed confirmation of the spin and PR machine that this Government really is, we got it at the weekend from Sir Ian Taylor. In a series of columns for the NZ Herald documenting his dealings with this Government, Taylor has become increasingly disillusioned. He admits he voted for them – that was probably his first mistake. Like many who voted for them, one wonders if he'll make that mistake again. Like many who believed in this Government, he went in with good faith believing they would walk their talk. Sadly, they did not. Like many business people who've tried to help this Government, he's been sidelined, rebuffed, muzzled, and shut out. It should worry every New Zealander interested in democracy and progress, that this Government continues to shut out the private sector, ignore them, and then crap all over them. The Government seems to have, on top of this bewildering level of arrogance, a very short memory. It was after all the private sector who helped them initially get their much-hailed Covid response off the ground in the first place. It was the Mowbray's of Zuru Toys fame sourcing the PPE, it was other business leaders like them loudly advocating to shut the border back at the start of all this and to act swiftly. The Government had to be dragged kicking and screaming, and as usual, once it got there, loudly claimed all the credit for it and continues to. It's strange that for a government so light on business experience itself, that they continue to believe they know best. Their bureaucrats have proven over the last three years, that that's just not the case. As Sir Ian Taylor said, government bureaucrats tend to do the same old stuff they've always done; order various reviews, take too long considering them, miss crucial windows, then scramble at the end in a mad panic. I'd hazard a guess they've probably burnt Ian Taylor now, they've burnt other business people who, as Business Editor Fran O' Sullivan pointed out, are getting increasingly sick of Ardern. O'Sullivan said in a business column last week that “the mood shift within the business sector has been moving against Ardern since late last year and has since spread more broadly.” So many of them won't be back. We know offshore Kiwis who got the border slammed shut in their face won't be back, the pensioners trapped overseas, the separated families, the businesses haemorrhaging without workers. It's doubtful many of them are ticking a red box again. So how has this Government, according to the latest poll, maintained its popularity? Either voters remain hoodwinked by them and sucked into the spin, or they don't care and would vote for this Government regardless of what it does or, no one's paying enough attention yet. I'd pick the latter.  But for the Sir Ian Taylor's, who've dealt with them at the coal face, there's first-hand experience of how not open honest and transparent they actually are. 

This is all an information war. I explain how the governments, pharma, media, and Big Tech use censorship, obfuscation, and lack of transparency to keep people from asking the right questions. We go over some of those questions that must be asked. Also, I delve into the danger of Congress being able to demand the president's emails with advisers and their desire to even subpoena private citizens for their political views. Later on, we're joined by Dr. Lynn Fynn, associate director of America's Frontline Doctors, who explains how to tell the difference between Delta and Omicron, how to treat both, and some emerging trends she is seeing both in symptoms and treatment options.
