Deep within us lies an innate understanding that we were created by and for God, designed for a greater purpose than our daily routines suggest. While regret often feels like an easier path to change, it only offers temporary relief rather than true transformation. Real change requires disrupting our normal patterns. The concept of My One Word isn't about making promises to improve—it's about adopting a perspective that helps us see God's active work in our lives, giving us a lens through which we can discover our authentic purpose and relationship with Him.
The subtitle for the book, My One Word, is “Change your life with just one word.” You may be thinking, “How can one word change my life?” I admit, it sounds like a bit of an overstatement, but words have power. When you look at the 29 times words are referred to in Proverbs, you will see words can be perverse and seductive; they can ensnare you and pierce you like a sword. Or, on the other hand, words can be wise and insightful. They can be just and pure. They can bring healing and comfort; they can be gracious and sweet. Words have the power of life and death. So, choosing a word—the right word—to focus on for an entire year can indeed bring personal change and spiritual formation in your life. It's not a self-help program; it's a way to change your thought life—to see things through God's eyes. And when you and I become truly focused on changing our attitudes and our thought patterns, we open ourselves to wonderful changes by the power of God's Spirit. How do you choose your one word for 2025? Well, first think about some things you would like to change about yourself. For example, patience might be an area you know you need improvement. Or discernment; that was one of my words in the past, as I recognized I am not naturally a discerning person. Or you might choose a word that exemplifies areas where you want to grow, such as wisdom or thankfulness. As you think and pray about what your one word will be for 2025, you will be amazed at how that process will lead you to the right word for you. Here is an example from the book of a word that someone chose: My word for the year is PAUSE. In my busy life there are so many times I need to pause. Pause to remember these days, for they will fly by so quickly. Pause to say yes...and no. Pause to give thanks. Pause before I speak in anger, judgment, or criticism. Pause to say I'm sorry. Pause to dwell on God's goodness and mercy.[1] What a great word to choose for 2025. Do you see how many areas of your life could be dramatically affected if you focused on the word pause for one year? To focus on your one word just means you will pray about it regularly—daily—and seek God's power to effect the changes he wants to make in your life through that word. Then you would do a search in the Bible for passages relating to your one word. For example, if pause were your word, some verses you might choose are: Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 91:1: Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 116:7: Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you. I would recommend that after you choose your one word, you begin a journal of how God is using this one word in your life. Keep track of all the verses that come to you throughout the year as a reminder of what this one word means for your life. If you seriously commit to focusing on that one word, praying it into your life, and asking God to empower you to make it a reality in your life, you will be amazed at how your one word has truly changed your life. Here's what another woman wrote about her one word: I am an intensely shy person. I avoid confrontation at all costs. And I only share my faith when it happens into a conversation. The idea of BOLDNESS, of being a truly bold Christian, is seriously out of my comfort zone. But it seems that this is God's challenge for me this year. I am to actively pursue BOLDNESS and be transformed in the process. So here I go—man, this is intimidating![2] This is an example of choosing a word that pushes you out of your comfort zone and teaches you to trust God in new ways. God might put this kind of word on your heart—something that even frightens you, but you know God wants to do a new work in you in that area. For example, that word might be boundaries, where you recognize your weakness in setting appropriate boundar...
“Reach isn't a measure or a strategy for how we get bigger. Reach is a measure of what we're willing to care about.” “We have to wage war against regret.” “We break the patterns of the past by choosing to be faithful in the moment.” Chapters: 00:00 Introduction and Background 07:27 Reaching People and Caring for Their Needs 09:07 Walking with People and Being Helpful 17:19 The Importance of Surrender 23:17 Choosing a Word of the Year 27:58 Living a Life of Beauty and Generosity 30:37 The Power of a Single Word 32:27 Being Intentional and Generative 36:39 Disrupting Old Patterns and Finding Peace 39:43 The Process of Encounter, Formation, and Expression 50:02 Being Cool and Embracing Authenticity Episode Summary: Mike Ashcraft, senior pastor at Port City Community Church, shares his journey and insights on generous leadership. He emphasizes the importance of reaching people and caring about their needs, rather than focusing on building something big. Mike also discusses the value of walking with people and not standing on issues, as well as the significance of surrender and choosing a word of the year. He encourages individuals to focus on who they want to be and to live a life of beauty and generosity. In this conversation, Mike Ashcraft discusses the power of choosing a single word to guide and shape our lives. He emphasizes the importance of being intentional and generative in our actions and thoughts. Mike also shares insights on disrupting old patterns, finding peace in the present moment, and the process of encounter, formation, and expression. He encourages us to be cool and not let our emotions dictate our responses. Ultimately, Mike wants to be remembered as someone who was authentic and actively worked towards becoming the person he aspired to be. R.O.G. Takeaway Tips: Reaching people is about caring for their needs and extending ourselves towards them. Walking with people involves being helpful and asking how we can support them. Surrendering involves trusting God with different aspects of our lives and offering ourselves as a living sacrifice. Choosing a word of the year helps deepen our awareness and focus on who we want to be. Living a life of beauty and generosity involves offering something that isn't necessarily productive or efficient. Choose a single word to guide and shape your life. Be intentional and generative in your actions and thoughts. Disrupt old patterns and find peace in the present moment. Embrace the process of encounter, formation, and expression. Be cool and don't let emotions dictate your responses. Strive to be authentic and actively work towards becoming the person you aspire to be. Guest Bio: Mike Ashcraft serves as the senior pastor at Port City Community Church which he helped start in 1999. Change is possible, but focus is required. God created us to live in a way and at a pace that He established. He made a way for us to experience the life He has intended us to live and become the kind of person He's calling us to be. Rather than doing nothing about everything, My One Word invites us to do something about one thing. In today's Midweek Meditation, we sit down with our College Ministry Director, Carson Goslee, to discuss week three of our teaching series, "Created To Become," narrowing down our "One Word for the year," and how we can focus in a world of disctraction. For more information, check our portcity.church/word.
We live in a constantly and chronically distracted world, leaving us in a state of partial attention. The pace of our lives seems to force us to divide our attention to get everything done. Our diverted mind takes an unintended toll on our hearts. What catches our eye will capture our hearts and garner our affection. We need to pay attention to what we pay attention to. God is always at work around us, yet, we are often too preoccupied to notice. Attention has a price; it always costs us something, but the good news is we get to choose what lays claim to our focus. Seeking the Kingdom of God first doesn't mean missing out but seeing everything else correctly. Change is possible. Focus is required. God created us to live in a way and at a pace that He established. He has made a way for us to experience the life He has intended us to live and become the kind of person He's calling us to be. Rather than doing nothing about everything, My One Word invites us to do something about one thing. Picking a word provides a way to pay attention to God's promise of formation. It serves as a single lens to see the connection between the various areas in our lives that can get divided.
We are all becoming something. The question is, are we aware of who we are becoming? In today's Midweek Meditation, we sit down with our Wilmington Campus Pastor, Clay Everett, to discuss our new teaching series, "Created To Become," "My One Word," and how to pay attention to our spiritual formation. For more information, check our portcity.church/word.
We all want to be different, but many don't know how to get there. Rather than a vision of becoming, our drive for change primarily finds its fuel in regret. In our quest for transformation, we don't need more quick-fix promises but a lens to see God's work in our lives over time. Vision-fueled action is more powerful than regret-based restraint. Unfortunately, life's normal, natural pace won't lead us to become the person God created us to be. We need something different to become different - a disruption from the routine. My One Word is a tool in our spiritual formation, a tangible way to seek God in our daily lives and abide in Him. Becoming who God uniquely created us to be is a life-long journey where transformation occurs through daily dependency over time.
Do you set New Year's resolutions or new goals this time of year, or are you like me and go through a reflection process to choose one word for the year that serves as a compass or a guide? While I do think goals can be very powerful when done correctly, I first have to know where my focus is. Since this is the first episode of 2023, I'll share about my own reflection process and what happened with last year's word. I'll also share with you how I chose my word for this year and offer some guiding questions and things to consider so you can choose your own word for 2023. My word is what I need in my life right now, and your word will be very different and should reflect what you need. I hope listening to this episode will help you find your own compass for the year. As we kick off a new year, a world full of new possibilities and resolutions awaits us. Some will find the blank canvas of 2023 invigorating, while others will see it as panic-inducing or just the start of another year of broken promises you made to yourself. In this episode of the M2P Podcast, Sass, Amy, and Kerry talk about a resource, My One Word, that you can use to better navigate the possibilities and lose the long list of broken resolutions by doing something about one thing this year instead of nothing about everything. You will want to utilize this resource yourself and pass it along to the parents and families in your church. Take a listen to this episode and consider what it would look like for you and those around you to step into the new year differently.
On New Year's Day, we are going to celebrate the ringing of the New Year together thinking about the One Word that God is placing on our hearts for 2023. We've all heard and said a lot of “Happy New Years” lately right? Well, what do we mean when we wish someone happiness for the new year? Often when someone says “Happy New Year,” they mean “Good Luck,” because they see happiness as a consequence of good things happening to you. If you have the good luck not to have health problems, or money problems, or emotional issues, then you will be happy—so they think—and therefore they are wishing you a year filled with good luck, nice circumstances. Others think of a Happy New Year as one filled with prosperity—you have a good job earning good money. You are successful in your pursuit of financial stability and you have no money worries. To them that would constitute a happy new year. Still others think that a happy new year is one where your internal emotional state is good—you have good self-esteem and you are emotionally strong. What would be your definition of a Happy New Year? If you could engineer the next 353 days of 2022, how would you design those days to make you happy? Here's the truth—you cannot engineer the next 300 or so days. You don't know what the future holds. Perhaps you'll have very happy circumstances and life will prove easy and good. But as soon as tomorrow, life could take a drastic turn in the wrong direction and your circumstances could change overnight. We have all lived through that since early 2020, haven't we? Your life—and mine—is in the hands of our God. As the old song says, “I know not what the future holds, but I know who holds the future.” If you live in 2022 for the purpose of pleasing the Lord, abiding in Christ and trusting the God who loves you, then this new year will bring you joy and contentment and peace—and yes, some happiness. So, whatever this year holds for you, I pray you will know Jesus better at the end of 2022 than you do now, and you will trust and love him more as you learn how much he loves you. That's the best year you could possibly have. If you would like to read the entire week's message, click here to view/download the PDF. I wonder if you have ever thought about the power that is released when you become a thankful person. Let me tell you some of the great things that will happen: People will like you much better. Thankful people are nice to be around. Your relationships will improve. You'll have more friends. Your energy level will go up. It's true, because when you're thankful, you unleash a lot of good energy that is often wasted on complaining and negativism. You will do more work in less time. And that's going to make you a better employee, which will make your boss happy! I won't go so far as to say you'll get a raise, but then again—who knows? Your stress will go down. I'm not making this up. When you are being thankful, you are thinking about the good things in your life, and that keeps you from focusing on the negative things. It's like a release valve on a pressure cooker—you will see your stress go down. Your face will be prettier—or more handsome, whichever you prefer! Think about it—when you are thankful, you're not worried or fretting, and those things cause lines in our faces and age us! You'll look younger! Your posture will improve. When you're thankful, you stand up straighter. When you're negative, your shoulders tend to stoop and your back curves. There's power in thankfulness. You have much to gain. But way above and beyond all of these, here's the most important reason to be thankful: You will honor and glorify Jesus Christ as he deserves. When you overflow with thankfulness, you tell the world what Jesus has done for you and you are a good ambassador for him. Not to mention, it pleases him to see your thankful heart. That's why I'm urging you to adopt this one word as your word for 2022: Thankfulness. Focus on it all year; pray it into your life; remind yourself every day to be thankful. If you would like "My One Word for 2022" reminder card, click here to download the pdf.
I'm sure I don't have to remind you that we're five days into a New Year. This is a good time for you and me to ask ourselves: What is my personal theme for 2022? What attitude or characteristic do I want God to create in me this year? David prayed, “Create in me a new heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). It's a good prayer for us in this New Year. A really good word to focus on all year is thankfulness. If you look at the sacrifices that are a part of the Mosaic law given by God, you'll discover that there were many sacrifices of thanksgiving. This was a ritual God put in place to remind his people that they were to be thankful people. We're no longer under the law, but we still need to be reminded to be thankful. Here are some more practical ways to become a thankful person—to learn to practice thanksgiving. Do the thankful alphabet. Start with A and go through Z, naming something starting with each letter for which you are thankful. You can have some fun with this; it's a great game to play in the car with your kids and you'll be teaching them to practice thankfulness. Make every Tuesday a “Thankful Tuesday” or each Thursday a “Thankful Thursday.” You can share this with your family or your co-workers and have some fun with it, but it will teach the joy of practicing thankfulness. Sing songs of thanksgiving. The Bible says to sing and make music in your heart to the Lord. Go for it. Begin every prayer time with thanksgiving. Psalm 100 tells us to enter the gates of the Lord with thanksgiving and enter his courts with praise. Whenever you enter into the presence of God, always enter with thanksgiving. Make the first words out of your mouth words of thankfulness. I have found that this changes my prayer time. If I begin with all my needs and requests, I am self-focused. If I begin with thanksgiving—reciting some of the many things I have to be thankful for—I am God-focused. What a difference that makes in my time spent with God, and that in turn makes a difference in my day. If you would like "My One Word for 2022" reminder card, click here to download the pdf.
Have you thought about a New Year's resolution for 2022? I would suggest that you don't need a resolution, you just need a word. One word that you will focus on all year. One word that says what you want God to do for you this year. One word that indicates an attitude and a commitment you're willing to take on with God's help. Actually, I would like to suggest one word that would work for you and anybody else you know—and that one word is thankfulness. Just suppose you determine to make thankfulness the theme of your life in this new year. Just suppose that you are willing to put away the negative thoughts and the complaining spirit, and overflow with thankfulness throughout the year? How would that make 2022 different from 2021? This is a characteristic I've been trying to cultivate more and more in my life because I want to be thankful for all my many, many blessings. But also because being thankful is a major stress buster! I'm not kidding; one of the best things you can do to reduce your stress, lower your blood pressure, and lengthen your life is to practice thankfulness. Notice I said "practice thankfulness.” You see, it's really easy to get caught up in complaining because that's what we hear around us quite often. And we've all gone through—still going through—a worldwide pandemic that gave us lots to complain about, didn't it? Don't you hear a good bit of griping and complaining where you work? Well, you might have caught that complaining disease without realizing it. So, you need to practice thankfulness. Here are some suggestions to help you do that. Put a sign on your desk or your screen saver or your refrigerator that says: “My one word for 2022: Thankfulness.” I think we just sometimes need simple reminders. It sure wouldn't hurt. In fact, we've prepared a reminder like this that you can use, if you like. Put on thankfulness each morning before you leave home. While you're buttoning your shirt or putting on your shoes, just make a little ritual each day of saying, "And I'm also putting on thankfulness to wear all day today." Very simple and easy things to do—but those little rituals and reminders could truly make a difference in your life in this new year. Christmas and New Year's celebrations are over—I'm guessing that you survived nicely. We're in a New Year. So, you think I'm going to talk about New Year's resolutions, right? Well, not really, because my experience is that those New Year's resolutions last about a week, if that long. But I do have an idea—maybe even a challenge—for you as you face this new year of 2022. I suggest you choose this one word to be your theme for the year—and that one word is thankfulness. Instead of making resolutions, for the past few years I've been choosing one word to focus on for the year—one word to think about and pray about and remember. For example, one year my one word was wisdom. Last year my one word was transition. And I prayed about those throughout the year because I desperately needed wisdom and last year was truly a year of transition for me and for our ministry. Well, this year I want to suggest that it could make a huge difference in our lives and the lives of those around us if our one word was thankfulness. You can never over-emphasize the importance of being always thankful. Paul wrote to the Colossians: “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:6-7). Overflowing with thankfulness—that's what we should be if we have received Christ Jesus as our Lord and are continuing to grow in our faith. In other words, thankfulness is supposed to be a trademark of a Christian. Now, ask yourself this question: Would people who know you well—who are around you often and see you in real-life environments regularly—would they describe you as a thankful person? ALTAR DAY "My One Word" 2 Kings 13:14-20 WHAT IS A “ONE WORD” ALTAR? I. THE ARROW THAT PREDICTS MY FUTURE. The best way to predict your future is to create it. 2 Kings 13:14-17When Elisha became sick with the illness of which he was to die, Joash the king of Israel came down to him and wept over him and said, “My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” 15And Elisha said to him, “Take a bow and arrows.” So he took a bow and arrows. 16Then he said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” And he put his hand on it, then Elisha laid his hands on the king’s hands. 17And he said, “Open the window toward the east,” and he opened it. Then Elisha said, “Shoot!” And he shot. And he said, “The LORD’s arrow of victory, even the arrow of victory over Aram; for you shall defeat the Arameans at Aphek until you have destroyed them.” The Predictive Principles Of “My One Word.”#1: Do SOMETHING About ONE THING Instead Of NOTHING About Everything. #2: My One Word is a LENS through which you will SEE, not a PROMISE which you must keep.#3: Keep Your “Word From God” In FRONT of you so you won’t FORGET God’s Voice.#4: Every Story Of Transformation Begins With A Word From God.“My One Word” is the point at which LOGOS becomes RHEMAH in your life. II. THE POINT I KEEP STRIKING THE GROUND. ( “Complete Victory”) 2 Kings 13:18-20Then he said, “Take the arrows,” and he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground,” and he struck it three times and stopped. 19So the man of God was angry with him and said, “You should have struck five or six times, then you would have struck Aram until you would have destroyed it. But now you shall strike Aram only three times.” 20And Elisha died, and they buried him. THE BEAUTY OF ONE WORD! A Single Word Can Reveal The Voice Of God. | A Single Word Focuses On Your Inner Character.III. THE PLOW AND OXEN I BURN. (Cortez, Point Of Plow?) 1 Kings 19:19, 21So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, while he was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth. And Elijah passed over to him and threw his mantle on him. 21So he returned from following him, and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah and ministered to him.
Pay attention to how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise men, and make the best use of your time because the days are evil. - Ephesians 5:15-16 (paraphrased)In our last session, we took a short look back over 2020 and crunched it into three words.2020 was the BEST YEAR EVER for me in spite of the pandemic. I did not start 2020 with any resolutions. “Resolutions are well-meaning, but they rarely last. To make anything last, there must be a change of heart, not just a change of season.” (1)Instead, I started with ONE WORD going forward, ONE VERSE to inspire, and then implemented a SIMPLE PLAN, with micro-steps, and my heart was changed one day at a time.In this session, we will begin by asking God to lead you to ONE WORD and ONE VERSE. Select one from this list that inspires, fuels, or unsettles you out of your comfort zone.Compassion. Colossians 3:12-13 Purpose. Jeremiah 29:11 Self-discipline. 1 Timothy 4:7b-8 Focus. Hebrews 12:1-2 Faith. Hebrews 11:6 Pray. Philippians 4:6-7 Love. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7Risk. Proverbs 3:5-6You will know you've selected the right one if it fires you up. It may not juice anybody else up and that doesn't matter -- if it does you, then you're set.I wear my ONE WORD stamped onto a key made by the good people at The Giving Keys, an inspiring “pay it forward” company. It is a constant reminder that God is changing my heart and walking with me. My ONE WORD for 2021 is TRUST and my ONE VERSE is John 14:1.Let me know yours and I will pray with you into 2021 that God will use your ONE WORD and VERSE to lead you into your BEST YEAR EVER. Next week we will dig into a SIMPLE PLAN.(1) Erika Michelle asymphonyofpraise.com/about___________________PRAY WITH ME:2020 was a rough one for me. The idea that 2021 could be my BEST YEAR EVER seems ridiculous. I've heard that with God all things are possible. So, I trust You will guide me as I begin my year with You. Thank You. What kind of person do you want to become? What is your vision for the new year ahead—what would you like to be more true about you at the end of 2021 than is so now? Choosing one word to focus on for the entire year could change you in 2021. And your one word might be a word of vision—a word that sets a goal and a vision for you to work toward. For example, from the book My One Word, here is an example of how one woman chose the word integrity, her word of vision for the year. She wrote: I am a radio personality, a writer, director, and producer. My one word is INTEGRITY. Integrity refers to the quality of a person's character at the core of their being. Integrity, for me, is one of the hardest words to live by, especially in the entertainment business. Striving for integrity reminds me to live by God's standards, not the media's. I want to live every day by my one word. Living every day by her one word is the vision God gave her as she chose one word for the year. That's the way this practice of choosing one word for the year can truly make a difference in your life—when you sincerely desire to live every day by that one word. For example, a visionary word might be purity, where you choose to live every day by God's standards of purity. That would affect many parts of your life—including purity of speech, purity of lifestyle, purity of motivations. Psalm 119:9 says, “How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word." Maybe this is an area where you struggle—to have purity of thoughts and lifestyle. If so, can you see how choosing this one word could help you attain your goal of living a pure life in 2021? It can be a life-changing word.
Can you remember back to the beginning of 2020? Have you grown spiritually in this past year? Can you identify areas in your life where you have changed for the better? Did you keep your New Year's resolution in 2020? One way you can make sure that 2021 is a year of growth in your spiritual formation is to choose one word as your area of intentional growth for this new year. Choosing one word to regularly and consistently meditate on, one word to keep in the forefront of your mind, one word to motivate you to allow God's Spirit to change you, is a way to ensure that this time next year, you will be able to clearly identify spiritual growth. I've been sharing some stories from the book, My One Word by Mike Ashcraft and Rachel Olsen, which illustrate how impactful this practice of choosing one word for the year can be. Here's what a woman wrote about her one word: I am an intensely shy person. So here I go—man, this is intimidating! This is an example of choosing a word that challenges you in areas that push you out of your comfort zone and teach you to trust God in new ways. God might put this kind of word on your heart—something that even frightens you, but you know God wants to do a new work in you in that area. For example, that word might be boundaries, where you recognize your weakness in setting appropriate boundaries in your life. That often requires some confrontation, but if you recognize your reticence and fear of setting good boundaries, that would be a great word for you in 2021—and by God's grace, it could truly be life-changing for you. So, start your search for that one word you will choose for 2021, and see what God wants to do for you in this new year.
When we were young, growth seemed natural and available. As we grow older, change seems to stagnate and become unachievable. We get so used to what God has done and "should do" that we stop longing to know Him and, instead, we settle for what we have always known and experienced. We spend too much of our lives bouncing back and forth between stagnation and frustration. Without a disruption, we drift aimlessly in the direction we've always gone. Change is possible, but focus is required. Clarity comes from sustained focus over time. My One Word replaces our broken promises with a vision for real change. Rather than swearing off the past, with your word, you're moving toward the future. Your best doesn't remain in the past; it resides in the present with an eye to the future.
Did you make a New Year's Resolution for 2021? Those resolutions don't last very long, as a rule. What I'm suggesting is that you don't need a resolution, you just need a word—one word that you will focus on all year. One word that says what you want God to do for you this year. One word that indicates an attitude and a commitment you're willing to take on with God's help. From the book, My One Word, here is an example of a word that someone chose: My word for the year is PAUSE. In my busy life there are so many times I need to pause. Pause to remember these days, for they will fly by so quickly. Pause to say yes. . . and no. Pause to give thanks. Pause before I speak in anger, judgment, or criticism. Pause to say I'm sorry. Pause to dwell on God's goodness and mercy. What a great word to choose for 2021. Do you see how many areas of your life could be dramatically affected if you focused on the word pause for one year? To focus on your one word just means that you are going to pray about it regularly—daily—and seek God's power to effect the changes he wants to make in your life through that word. Then you would do a search in the Bible for passages that relate to your one word. For example, if pause were your word, some verses you might choose are: Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 91:1: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 116:7: “Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.” I would recommend that after you choose your one word, you begin a journal of how God is using that one word in your life. Keep track of all the verses that come to you throughout the year as a reminder of what that one word means for your life. If you seriously commit to focusing on that one word, praying it into your life, and asking God to empower you to make it a reality in your life, you will be amazed at how that one word has truly changed your life.
Christmas is over, New Year's has come and gone, and we're back to the everyday routine of life—right? As we get started into this New Year, rather than making resolutions which never last very long, I want to once again encourage you to choose “one word” as your theme for 2021. I've been doing this for the past few years—choosing one word to focus on all year—one word to think about and pray about and remember. I first got started in this practice after I read the book, My One Word by Mike Ashcraft and Rachel Olsen, and I highly recommend the book to you. The subtitle for the book is “Change your life with just one word.” You may be thinking, “How can one word change my life?” I admit it sounds like a bit of an overstatement, but words have power. When you look at the 29 times that words are referred to in Proverbs, you will see that words can be perverse and seductive, they can ensnare you and pierce you like a sword. Or, on the other hand, words can be wise and insightful, they can be just and pure, they can bring healing and comfort, they can be gracious and sweet. Words have the power of life and death. So, choosing a word—the right word—to focus on for an entire year can indeed effect personal change and spiritual formation in your life. It's not a self-help program; it's a way to change your thought life—to see things through God's eyes. And when you and I become truly focused on changing our attitudes and our thought patterns, then we open ourselves to wonderful changes by the power of God's Spirit. How do you choose your one word for 2021? Well, first think about some things you would like to change about yourself. For example, patience might be an area where you know you need improvement. Or discernment; that was one of my words in the past, as I recognized that I am not naturally a discerning person. Or you might choose a word that exemplifies areas where you want to grow, such as wisdom or thankfulness. As you think and pray about what your one word will be for 2021, you will be amazed at how that process will lead you to the right word for you.

This is an encore presentation of one of my favorite episodes. Enjoy! This episode is a live recording of my chat with Sara Kuljis about some of our favorite year-end reflection activities. Joining Sara and me for this episode is Kate Rader, one of the participants from our Raise Thriving Kids Workshop. Kate is a stay-at-home mom to 3 adventure-seeking and fun-loving kiddos, Lauren and Caroline, identical twins who are 13 and Jack, age 10, wife to her college sweetheart Jeff and curious lover of books, podcasts, and conversations about intentional parenting and living. Here's what Kate had to say about our workshop: "It was just so wonderful to be in a room with people who care enough to be intentional about the choices they're making for their families and what they want for their families because it's a work in progress--and we're all working together." Big Ideas In addition to parenting books, podcasts, and coaching, workshops are a great resource for parents. Just as most people need continual training and education in their careers, parents can also take the time to learn and connect with others in order to feel invigorated. It is helpful to share what is working and to discuss best practices for strengthening family bonds. We talk a lot about the importance of self-care and modeling a balanced life for our kids. Today we discuss the ideas I shared in my recent post, 5 Simple Year-End Reflections: Create a Reverse Bucket List. Look back over your life and make a list of the cool things you've already done. 100 Family Memories Brainstorm and make a list of what happened in your family this year. Pick a Quote of the Year Find a quote that resonates with you, or something motivational, looking back or looking ahead, a quote you want to live by. Select One Word that you want to guide you in the new year Be authentic and make it a word that is uniquely yours. Remember your Favorite Books or resources from the past year Take time to let the new things that you have learned (in books, podcasts, workshops) to percolate and apply the concepts or practices to your life. Pick one or two of these ideas that resonate with you. You can do an activity on your own or engage the whole family. Make the delivery of the idea fun and light. Allow people to be silly. Getting the family together over the holidays, expressing gratitude, and setting intentions together are my favorite ways to bring in the new year. Quotes Sara: "Sometimes parenting intentionally feels counter-cultural. When we're swimming upstream, to have fishies to swim with is so confidence building. It's reassuring, it's empowering. I've loved all the parents we have gotten to work with through this project because it has fueled me." Kate: "The regular accountability is equally as important to me as the one-day workshop. Whether it's via podcasts, recorded conversations, or live conversations, getting together at Starbucks, or whatever it might be, that's really beneficial in maintaining the kind of wonderful feelings that we got coming out of the workshop." Kate: "If we're going to develop a true family culture, we need to be intentional about spending time together as a family. And that time is harder and harder to come by." Kate: "Just being together, away, experiencing some new adventures has been a neat way for us to firm up our family culture and values and make memories together. That's been a key take away for me." Kate: "It's not about those grand gestures. It's about the thoughtful, meaningful moments where people take the time to appreciate their relationships." Audrey: "Even if you're not a person who gives affirmations, I really don't think there's a person in this world who wouldn't mind getting a nice note saying something that someone likes about them." Audrey: "Sometimes parents start thinking that their relationship with their child is supposed to be like a normal, reciprocal relationship. Expecting that you pour into this child and they're going to pour back to you, is not how parenting works. However, I'm seeing that once they're adults you may get more of the reciprocity than when they were kids. I get very filled up now by my adult children when they give me affirmations or send me a nice message--it's really great." Audrey: "You keep encouraging, even if you don't think it means something because I think it really is landing somewhere." Audrey: "Another activity could be taking a year's worth of fun texts, cards, and nice messages and putting them somewhere like in a scrapbook just as a great boost." Sara: "I love the idea of sitting down with the whole family and saying, 'let's look way back' because there is a chance that something that I didn't consider very bucket-y might have been really significant to my kids. I think it will remind us that it has been a rich life of experiences." Audrey: "I would challenge you to focus on yourself for your own reverse bucket list. Sometimes it's good to just think about for your own self-awareness and self-worth and knowing that you're enough just the way you are. I would suggest that the bucket list idea is more of a personal thing because it is recognizing the goals you've already achieved and the cool things that you've done, whereas the 100 Family Memories would be the things you're grateful for." Audrey: "The goal is to try to remember (as many as) 100 things so you get down to some of the minutiae and those are some of the funny, random, individual things that happened. It's been a really fun practice." Kate: "I think when you allow each family member to share their treasured memories from the year, it gives us insight into their personalities and their level of value and priorities, as well." Audrey: "I like spending time at the end of the year, really thinking through what my one word is, thinking about what was good this year and what is it that I want to take into the new year and feel more of, or do more of--I love the process." Audrey: "Determine the kind of person you want to be in the next year. Identify the characteristics of that best self. When you're being your best self, what does that look like? It has guided me a lot because once I pick a word, I then seek out resources and ideas to help me live that word better." Kate: "It's a neat way to put the focus on how you're going to spend your time, your energy, your reading, and research--all that good stuff. When it is meaningful, it really does carry you through the year and it gives purpose to how you're spending your time." Audrey: "It really hit me that my best contribution to my family, to the world, comes when I focus and take the time to do some research, reading, writing, thoughtful time, which is not a normal part of life anymore. You have to actually build in focus." Audrey: "There are so many new ideas and things you can do, but to really move the needle, all you need to do is just one. I am challenging myself this year to slow down on the consumption of new information and instead get out the books I've read, look at my highlights and just recap." Episode 37: Tricia Had a Birthday! In this episode, Rob is eager to learn about how Tricia spent her “socially distanced birthday,” which seems to dissolve before long into a lot of laughter in this episode! Peter was excited to present Tricia with his gift to her for her birthday: a new bike! (And not a tandem bike, thankfully, as they have now learned that it’s best if everyone just rides his or her own bike.) Peter’s more than a little concerned about Tricia’s short legs, as she seems to get off the bike by “aborting” the ride! Tricia was prepared to answer what has become known as Rob’s Best Birthday Question: “What is something that you know this year that you didn’t know last year on your birthday?” She offers several responses, along with this conclusion: she is very happy to be 41. Rob offered her some wisdom from his book A Hundred Years that offers a wise thought for every year of your life. After a quick review of the thoughts for people in their 40’s…well, they both decided they really don’t like the book. Tricia tries to explain the calendar in her mind that seems to be football shaped. Rob requested that she draw a diagram of this mental image, as a visual seems necessary to help explain…why it isn’t a circle, like his year. Surprise! Tricia and Rob’s dad called Tricia via FaceTime right in the middle of this episode! He stepped right into the conversation, but was also happy to step right out of it. (And he’ll probably try to avoid letting that happen again!) As they return to the topic at hand, Tricia and Rob discuss the potential benefits of having a word for the year of your age, similar to Mike Ashcraft’s recommendation in his book (see below) of choosing one word as the theme for your calendar year. Tricia also shares her theory on what each decade of life seems to be about—at least, as far into the decades that she has come at this point! “The more we learn, the more we learn that we do not know.” – Rob “Turning 40 is just a giant permission slip. I gave myself permission to say, ‘Hey, I’m 40, and I’m doing that now.’ Or ‘Hey, I’m 40, and I’m not doing that anymore!” Tricia: “Peter, what is this part of my knee called, this part right here that hurts?” Peter: “Oh yeah…I think that’s called ‘You’re Turning 41 Tomorrow…’” Sources mentioned or quoted on this episode: My One Word, by Mike Ashcraft The Five Minute, No Rehearsal, No Sheet Music on Facebook Live with My Trumpet, by Rob Lott (You might need to decide to be his Facebook friend in order to enjoy these unannounced concert events.) A New Year, so many people make New Year's Resolutions that seldom last a day, week or maybe a month. A better way is to ask God to give you a Word from Him to carry with you through the year. Gill reminds us to begin to ask for our One word from God for 2020. We hear two testimonies of how My One Word has helped in this past year. Gill shares the One Word for the church for 2020

Happy New Year!! In 2019 I had two goals: 1. To fit into my ski pants 2. To be in control of my food intake If my ski pants fit, that meant I could go skiing and spend wonderful, exhilarating time with loved ones! And if I could be in control of my food intake, that meant I wouldn't inadvertently hijack other goals that I had about health and weight loss. Today I share about how I met those goals, through a 5-step process that I hope will be helpful as you work to achieve your goals! Links and other stuff I share in this episode are located at weturnedoutokay.com/312 Join us! Sign up for my Weekly Parenting Newsletter Each Wednesday I send out a Parenting Newsletter, to help you stay sane while raising your kiddos. We're doing a series right now on what to do when you feel like a failure, and who among us hasn't felt like that at some point? Useful stuff. Click weturnedoutokay.com/weekly so it zooms right into your inbox each week! Cheat sheet of the 5 steps to get what you want out of life: 1. Declare yourself worthy. This is a tough one! I do it with something that I call "mirror chats." 2. Decide what you want. This one feels deceptively easy, but sometimes it can take a while to figure out what we actually want. 3. Decide where you want to be with that goal… By a certain date. 4. Take one small step most days, or weeks. 5. Assess how it's going once a week. Also, as part of this, find something to celebrate each week. My One Word is: ENOUGH this was such a tough one, I had to choose between two words and the people in my email newsgroup were so helpful as I made my choice! If that was you, thank you so much!
If you’re like most people, each January goes something like this: You choose a problematic behavior that has plagued you for years and vow to reverse it. In fact, you can probably think of two or three undesirable habits—make that four or five. Thus begins the litany of imperfections to be perfected commonly known as “New Year’s Resolutions.” All of which are typically off your radar by February.“My One Word” is an experiment designed to move you beyond this cycle. The challenge is simple: lose the long list of changes you want to make this year and instead pick ONE WORD.This process provides clarity by taking all your big plans for life change and narrowing them down into a single focus. Just one word that centers on your character and creates a vision for your future.
[caption id="attachment_6803" align="alignnone" width="1024"]Kate Rader and family[/caption] Here's what Kate had to say about our workshop: "It was just so wonderful to be in a room with people who care enough to be intentional about the choices they're making for their families and what they want for their families because it's a work in progress--and we're all working together." Big Ideas In addition to parenting books, podcasts, and coaching, workshops are a great resource for parents. 100 Family Memories - brainstorm and make a list of what happened in your family this year. Pick a Quote-of-the-Year. Find a quote that resonates with you, or something motivational, looking back or looking ahead, a quote you want to live by. Select One Word that you want to guide you in the new year. Be authentic and make it a word that is uniquely yours. Remember your Favorite Books or resources from the past year. Take time to let the new things that you have learned (in books, podcasts, workshops) to percolate and apply the concepts or practices to your life. I am challenging myself this year to slow down on the consumption of new information and instead get out the books I've read, look at my highlights and just recap." At its core, the Enneagram helps us to see ourselves at a deeper, more objective level and can be of invaluable assistance on our path to self-knowledge.- The Enneagram Institute Website In Episode 104, I'm chatting with my daughter Meredith who--like me--enjoys learning more about herself and other people. The tool we discuss most is the Enneagram, which Meredith discovered last year through her employer and introduced to me and the rest of our family. Big Ideas It is important for parents, and anyone who works with kids, to be self-aware. Understanding personality types can help us to create healthier relationships because it affects the way we view the behavior of others, as well as our own reactions in different situations. Empathy increases when we are more aware of other people's tendencies. Each relationship is unique based on personality types. It is the parent's responsibility to adjust and to figure out where the child is coming from. Noone can be defined by one personality test or type but learning about the different characteristics and identifying with types can be extremely informative. We can't accurately assess other people's types just by observing their behavior. Personality test results are personal and best used for self-reflection. Being self-aware helps us identify our weaknesses and strengths in relation to achieving our goals and in our relationships with others. The Nine Enneagram Types in their Family Roles Ones: family perfectionists Twos: family helpers Threes: family stars Fours: Shed light on family problems Fives: family experts Sixes: move between building family unity and rebelling against the family unit Sevens: family cheerleaders Eights: family protectors Nines: family peacemakers Quotes Audrey: "The theme of this podcast is about the importance for parents and anyone who works with kids to know themselves because your own self-awareness has a huge impact on how you view the behavior of others." Audrey: " You can have more compassion when you understand where other people come from and it changes your view of why they do something that may annoy you or that kind of thing." Audrey: "As parents, we are different with each of our kids because our kids each have different personalities. It's our responsibility to adjust and not our kids." Meredith: "I do think that the Enneagram, and with most personality quizzes once you find out what you are, you sometimes don't want to be that. I think its easier to focus on the downsides of that personality type and look at the good sides of other personality types." Audrey: "Remember, 'Comparison is the thief of joy.'" Audrey: "The more I've read about my type, the more it has freed me from some of my frustrations with myself. It has given me a better understanding of why I've done some of the things I've done and why I am the way I am. It actually makes me feel a little better." Audrey: "I like the whole idea that there are some things that just make me kind of unique and just because I don't do something the same way or view things the same way, it's still okay." Audrey: "I just think that self-awareness is a really important part of social intelligence and a lot of us don't have it. I really don't think I did until a few years ago when I started doing more strengths testing, this Enneagram, and the four tendencies. It's like all this stuff kind of comes together like a puzzle of self-awareness." Meredith: "It's a tool for yourself and maybe for your close family members and friends so that they can understand you better. It's not something that you go around asking people, 'What's your Enneagram number?' because sharing your numbers, sharing how you think, your weaknesses, the different lies you believe about your self, is actually quite personal." Audrey: "You really have to read the book to understand for sure the one (type) you are because oftentimes depending on how healthy you are and what you're doing, you may look like a different number." Audrey: "You really can't tell about someone else because you don't know what's going on inside of them." Meredith: "Being aware of Enneagram numbers has helped me to empathize with the way other people were thinking and for them to understand me, as well. It has made me more aware of myself and for example, how I can come off to others, even when I don't think I'm coming off as critical." Meredith: "It is helpful to be aware of the way my brain is wired, that I need to actively work to give myself grace, to be aware of my thought patterns so that I can see when I'm starting to be in a state of stress or a state of health because I'm taking on those qualities." Audrey: "For me, I'm prone to not rest in my emotions long or deep enough and that came out in the last few years with problems in my body. Like in my shoulder, my knee, I would always have some huge pain and it was because I had internal pain that I wasn't dealing with." Meredith: "Read an introductory level book. It's most helpful to read the descriptions in-depth and identify with one. I think that's more helpful than just taking a quiz and having it spit out an answer for you." Meredith: "You move around on the Enneagram a lot, sometimes to lots of different ones depending on if you're in a state of stress or security. So it's not like your number is locked in. You move around to your wings and then to other numbers too. It's normal to identify with lots of different qualities, but I think it's when you really identify with one number, you found the right one." Audrey: "It's fun to take them because any little insight that you gain is just more self-awareness." Meredith: "You have to give yourself grace because it's not like you can know what Enneagram or personality types all your kids or family members have, especially when kids are changing and forming in different ways. I think it's good just to be aware, but don't be too hard on your self." Audrey: "There can be certain personalities that may bring out your not-great parts, like when your kid has a personality that's so different from yours or one that clashes with yours. That can be really hard as a parent." Audrey: "A lot of parents have pain when they don't feel their relationship is really strong with one of their kids. But there is always reparation, especially if you take the time to learn a little bit more about each other and figure it out." ONE WORD TO RELEASE THE RAIN - Reset 2018 Jan. 21 - Pastor David Rathel “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” John 6:63 YOUR ONE WORD OF SPIRIT AND LIFE: Every Story Of TRANSFORMATION Begins With A WORD From God. Do SOMETHING About ONE THING Instead Of NOTHING About Everything. My One Word is a LENS through which you will SEE, not a PROMISE which you must keep. You Will Keep Your “Word From God” In FRONT of you so you won’t FORGET God’s Voice. God’s One Word For RiverTown In 2018 As A Family Is ABUNDANCE! Under King Ahab, Israel’s Word Was DROUGHT. 1 Kings 17:1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the LORD, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, surely there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” What Is Your Drought Word? What Word Would Release Your Rain? (Last Sunday, The Last Year, Youth Lock-In) YOUR WORD BECOMES YOUR WATER. Hosea 6 1“Come, let us return to the LORD. For He has torn us, but He will heal us; He has wounded us, but He will bandage us. 2“He will revive us after two days; He will raise us up on the third day That we may live before Him. 3“So let us know, let us press on to know the LORD. His going forth is as certain as the dawn; And He will come to us like the rain, Like the spring rain watering the earth.” Receive Your Word ~ Become Your Word ~ Release Your Word Hosea 10:12 Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the LORD, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you. It’s Got To Reign In You Before It Will Rain Around You. 1 Kings 18:37-39 37Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” 38Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. 39When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!” 1 Kings 18:41-46 41And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” 42So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. 43“Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked. “There is nothing there,” he said. Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.” 44The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’ ” 45Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel. 46The power of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel. Prayer Of Honi, The Circle Maker “Lord of the Universe, I swear before your great name that I will not move from this circle until you have shown mercy upon your children. Not for such rain have I prayed, but for rain that will fill cisterns, pits, and caverns. Not for such rain have I prayed, but for rain of Thy favor, blessing, and graciousness.”

ALTAR DAY "My One Word" 2017 2 Kings 13:14-20 WHAT IS A “ONE WORD” ALTAR? THE ARROW THAT PREDICTS MY FUTURE. 2 Kings 13:14-17 When Elisha became sick with the illness of which he was to die, Joash the king of Israel came down to him and wept over him and said, “My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” 15And Elisha said to him, “Take a bow and arrows.” So he took a bow and arrows. 16Then he said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” And he put his hand on it, then Elisha laid his hands on the king’s hands. 17And he said, “Open the window toward the east,” and he opened it. Then Elisha said, “Shoot!” And he shot. And he said, “The LORD’s arrow of victory, even the arrow of victory over Aram; for you shall defeat the Arameans at Aphek until you have destroyed them.” The Four Predictive Principles Of “My One Word.” #1: Every Story Of TRANSFORMATION Begins With A WORD From God. #2: Do SOMETHING About ONE THING Instead Of NOTHING About Everything. #3: My One Word is a LENS through which you will SEE, not a PROMISE which you must keep. #4: Keep Your “Word From God” In FRONT of you so you won’t FORGET God’s Voice. THE POINT I KEEP STRIKING THE GROUND. 2 Kings 13:18-20 Then he said, “Take the arrows,” and he took them. THE PLOW AND OXEN I BURN. 1 Kings 19:19, 21 So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, while he was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth. And Elijah passed over to him and threw his mantle on him. 21So he returned from following him, and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah and ministered to him.

TRANSFORMED BY “ONE WORD” FROM GOD EVERYBODY WANTS TO CHANGE: It is expected that 90 million Americans make New Year’s Resolutions. It is expected that 75% abandon them by February. What one word on your tombstone? The Power Of My One Word Is The Power Of The Bible. Your Word Is A Word From God’s Word Illuminated In Your Heart. JAMES 1:19-25 19Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. 20Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. 21So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls. 22But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. Come January we will be back with more episodes on our "My One Word" for the year, tips on forming new habits, what we "got" for Christmas, and hopefully more of our sisters will join in the chats. Show notes for this episode: Immanuel texts for you to study, Isaiah 7:14; 8:8; Matt. 1:23 C. S. Lewis in Mere Christianity “The Son of God became a man to enable men to become sons of God.” If you are interested in hearing more about the place that might have been Jesus' tomb, click here. Obviously everyone can have their own opinion on whether they believe it to be fact or not. While the video is not the best quality, it's definitely interesting to watch!
Jon & Jeremy talk about MYONEWORD.ORG, and the book "My One Word" by Mike Ashcraft & Rachel Olsen, and what it looks like to have a one word vision for 2017, rather than a handful of failed resolutions.

Joshua 4 1Now it came about when all the nation had finished crossing the Jordan, that the LORD spoke to Joshua, saying, 2“Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe, 3and command them, saying, ‘Take up for yourselves twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests’ feet are standing firm, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging place where you will lodge tonight.’” 4So Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of Israel, one man from each tribe; 5and Joshua said to them, “Cross again to the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel. 6“Let this be a sign among you, so that when your children ask later, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ 7then you shall say to them, ‘Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.’ So these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of Israel forever.” What We’ve Learned So Far: Week #1: Every Story Of TRANSFORMATION Begins With A WORD From God. Week #2: Do SOMETHING About ONE THING Instead Of NOTHING About Everything. Week #3: My One Word is a LENS through which you will SEE, not a PROMISE which you must keep. Week #4: Keep Your “Word From God” In FRONT of you so you won’t FORGET God’s Voice. The Word “Confession” In Greek: Homo Logeo. SAME SPEAK - Speak The Same As God / Agree With God A Prophetic Confession Spoken In Agreement With God About My Life! From The Soul’s Code, by James Hillman There is more in a human life than our theories of it allow. Sooner or later something seems to call us onto a particular path. You may remember this “something” as a signal moment in childhood when an urge out of nowhere, a fascination, a peculiar turn of events struck like an annunciation: This is what I must do. This is what I’ve got to have. This is who I am… (video LAURA https://youtu.be/SBQJw3SYQ58) So shall My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:11 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:5
Week #3: Message Bottom Line - My One Word is a LENS through which you will SEE, not a PROMISE which you must keep. Key Verse: But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man. The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9 MY ONE WORD: ONE WORD forces CLARITY. I am amazed at how clear something can seem while it is in my head until when I try to explain it to someone else. Articulation has a way of dissipating fog like nothing else. ONE WORD focuses EFFORT. Instead of trying to do everything, your one word is going to help you narrow your focus, so your efforts will be effective. [scott smith video] Review: Week #1: Every Story Of TRANSFORMATION Begins With A WORD From God. Week #2: Do SOMETHING About ONE THING Instead Of NOTHING About Everything. Week #3: My One Word is a LENS through which you will SEE, not a PROMISE which you must keep. HOMEWORK: List of CHARACTERISTICS: List 10-15 words, then narrow it down to just one. What impact will each ‘word’ have on the way you see your life? RESIST Making Promises: Instead, see the ‘word’ from God in your life that makes you dependent, not committed. FOCUS on What you SEE: This is a process. Simply, get into a position to see Christ at work deeply and intimately in your heart through your ‘word’! I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,19and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. Ephesians 1:18, 19

Pastor Jorge Martinez of The Sanctuary Fellowship in The Bronx, NY challenges the congregation to pick ONE WORD to live out 2014. Inspired by the "WyOneWord.org" movement, all members and visitors were encouraged to pick one word and write it on a rock which was provided. These rocks will be on display at TSF in the lobby throughout the rest of the year as a reminder to us all.
