Lots of sunshine on the way today with a high of 59. Clear tonight with a low of 35. The weekend is looking a little wet. Saturday will be warmer with a passing shower in the afternoon. The high will be 65. Sunday will be a little cooler and a little rainier with a high of 47; Buc-ee's has accused a Dallas-based gas station chain of copying its iconic cartoon beaver logo. In a federal lawsuit this month, the travel center behemoth says Super Fuels' logo of a brown dog sporting a red cape is too close to its logo of a brown beaver in a red hat. Both animals are set in front of circular backgrounds: Super Fuels' dog against a blue circle, and Buc-ee's beaver against yellow. Buc-ee's says in the lawsuit the dog “is likely to cause confusion” among customers who mistake the two from the road. In other news, Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert's base salary makes her the third-highest-paid city manager in Texas behind her old boss in Austin and San Antonio's top executive; after a month of looking for the girl who went missing on Christmas Eve after her family's vehicle was swept into a Sherman drainage ditch, Texas EquuSearch has taken over as the lead agency in the search for Clara Robinson. The 8-year-old girl was with her family as they were driving from their Oklahoma home to McKinney on U.S. 75 when their vehicle crashed on the wet road around 9:30 a.m., landing in a drainage ditch overflowing with rainwater; And Grapevine-raised musician Post Malone has partnered with Oreo on a limited edition cookie. Rob Dick shares how tensions peaked during a live broadcast outside the Anthony home, where protestors and media created a volatile spectacle. Texas EquuSearch's arrival and Casey's hostile refusal to cooperate only deepened suspicions about her involvement in Caylee's disappearance. After Casey's second arrest for writing bad checks, Leonard Padilla and his team seized the opportunity to step away from an increasingly dangerous situation while continuing their pursuit of answers. This week, Yergy and Drewby head to Texas to discuss the tragic case of Samuel Olson, a little boy whose story has become all too common on this channel... A child is born, the parents separate, and then one (or both) of the parents get involved with a significant other who means nothing but harm to their child. In this case, Samuel's father, Dalton, became involved with a woman named Theresa Balboa. Theresa was no stranger to the court system, having already lost custody of her own children previously. However, in late May of 2021, Samuel went missing, and the last person to see him alive was Theresa. On June 2nd, police confirmed that Samuel's remains had been located inside of a plastic tote in Jasper, Texas. He'd been killed 17 days prior to his 6th birthday.  Support Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/themiserymachine PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/themiserymachine Join Our Facebook This week, we have reached the milestone of 40 episodes and to celebrate, we brought in our friend, Jeff Appleby, to discuss how we can use music to discuss how music an be used to serve your community and the common good. While Jeff is not a musician, he what we'd call a "Scene Leader". He puts on shows, connects bands with one another and has his finger on the pulse of everything going down on the southside of Houston. Each year, he throws a huge birthday party at Ronnie's Hog Heaven and, for the past four years, has used it to raise money for Texas EquuSearch. We've played it every year he's done the benefit and really enjoyed seeing the community come together to support a great organization like Texas Equusearch. Jeff runs Pretty OK BBQ, which cooks up some of the best BBQ you'll ever have. He was also a co-host of the Two Sheet Cookers podcast! We hope you enjoy listening to our conversation with Jeff as much as we enjoyed recording it! Visit the Texas Equusearch website to learn more and/or make a donation at: https://texasequusearch.org/

In 2016, Elisa Roberson's case saw the most activity it had since 1989. First, Texas Equusearch came to Aransas Pass to search property once owned by original detectives' prime suspect. But nothing was found. Then, police took a different approach and used ground penetrating radar and jackhammers, presumably, to break up concrete in the garage under the former Roberson home. Although it was reported in the press that nothing was found a few years later, one person – the prime suspect's daughter – continued to perpetuate the rumor that Elisa's body was found. You'll hear a Mark Twain quote in this episode. "The two best days are the one we are born and the one where we figure out why." That quote captures this episode with Texas EquuSearch's team as they tell their stories, how they found this organization, and how honored they are to find their why. This is the first half of the interview with Tammy Phillips, Director – Business Operations; Angelina Farris,  Deputy Director; Ken Sandor, Field Operations Manager; Mary Allbright, Research Analyst and family Liaison; and Mark Edwards, Field Operations Manager. This is part of the MrBallen Foundation series, introducing you to non-profits and volunteer opportunities nationwide.  About TXEQ Texas EquuSearch is a 501(c)3 nonprofit volunteer search and recovery organization.  Texas EquuSearch never charges a family or law enforcement entity for their services. Headquartered near Houston, Texas, resources have evolved far beyond the original horse-mounted searches. Today, searches include the use of ground searchers, side scan sonar, ground penetrating radar, boats, aircrafts, drones, and ATVs. Many law enforcement agencies across the United States call on the resources of the organization's highly skilled searchers to assist in their lost, missing or murder victim cases. Throughout the years, Tim Miller and the organization have received numerous awards from law enforcement agencies and grateful community groups, recognition from media partners, and countless thank you's from families of missing loved ones. Texas EquuSearch has assisted in thousands of cases throughout the US and abroad giving some form of resolution to distraught families as well as closure to many criminal cases. There is no doubt that Executive Director, Tim Miller and his team lend credence to the age-old saying… “Volunteers are not unpaid because they are worthless. They are unpaid because they are PRICELESS!”. How TXEQ Started “Don't thank me, thank Laura.” – Tim Miller Many great and meaningful things have been born from adversity. In some cases, the response and resiliency to that adversity has resulted in monumental benefits to humanity. Such can be said of Texas EquuSearch after the tragic and senseless kidnapping and murder of 16-year-old Laura Miller in 1984. Laura's father, Tim Miller, knows all too well the heartbreak and trauma that other families feel when a loved one goes missing. In August of 2000, Tim Miller founded and became the Executive Director of Texas EquuSearch which began as a horse-mounted search and recovery team. Through the years, like-minded volunteers have given their own time, talents, resources, and dedication to help recover and return lost and missing loved ones to their families.

The family of a 24-year-old Houston woman, Felicia Marie Johnson, has issued a public plea for information after she went missing last week in Houston. She was last seen on April 15 when she stopped into the Cover Girls Night Club to look for work. Community activist Quanell X has claimed that Johnson was offered a ride by an unidentified customer after her Uber was late. No one has since heard from Johnson. Meanwhile, Kevin, Johnson's father, flew from California to Houston to appear with X. A private investigator the family hired has reportedly found her blood-covered phone. While Houston police said they are actively investigating the case, nonprofit search-and-rescue group Texas EquuSearch has also joined in to search for Johnson. Talking about Johnson's disappearance, X said that it is part of “an epidemic in Houston, with Black girls going missing and coming up murdered.” “This is the fifth Black girl to come up missing, quote-unquote, ‘involved in the sex industry,'” he said. “The previous four were all found murdered—and this is all in the past five months.” Johnson has been described as having long black hair, brown eyes, and a dark complexion. She can also be identified by a butterfly and a pair of roses tattooed on her right shoulder. Anyone with information about Johnson's whereabouts has been asked to call the Houston Police Department at (713) 884-3131, the Houston Police Missing Persons Division at (832) 394-1840, or Texas EquuSearch at (281) 309-9500. According to the FBI, at the end of 2020, the National Crime Information Center had almost 90,000 active missing persons cases entered into its data bank. That number absolutely blows my mind, and I hope it does yours too. Today, we are continuing our 12 Cases of Christmas series by looking at the disappearances of three people, Lopaz Richardson, Allyson Dalton, and Donald Westfall, Jr, whose families desperately want to know what happened to them. The Bible tells us in Luke 8:17, “For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.” Of course, the frustrating part is that that promise isn't always fulfilled in the time frame we want. These families, and so many others, deserve to know what happened to their loved ones, so let's do everything we can to help them. As believers, we all have a calling to be a PI - a person of impact. I had an amazing discussion with Jo Ann today about her missing daughter, Ali, and how she is helping other families in our community.Jo Ann's Story"I've never though about what I do is considered “serving the community” but I guess it is.My daughter Alexandria went missing after stepping off her school bus more than 10 years ago. Never in my life would I have thought I would still be searching this long.I've connected with other families over the years and found they also struggle as I do, so I formed a support group for families with a missing loved one.I've had the City of Houston proclaim Ali's birthday as Houston Missing Persons Day. And 4 years ago it is also National Missing Persons Day.I connected with Texas EquuSearch a short time after Ali went missing and now they are like my family. My time doesn't always allow me to physically search anymore, so now I try to fundraise for them by organizing a golf tournament."@hopeforaliGolf Tournament Detailshttps://fb.me/e/3CTVy5GT9Texas EquuSearch Pagehttps://texasequusearch.org/Trisha Stetzel, owner of ResultsXtreme Business Solutions is your host.More About Trisha Herehttps://teamrxc.com/about-trisha/Video versions of Serving the Communityhttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnxZ3MPHYPGn61f6JNIQzVg82I7gIZo_dHow to Connect with TrishaFacebookhttps://www.facebook.com/tstetzelLinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/trisha-stetzel/Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/teamrxc_resultsxtreme/

Tonight Ice and Spanky talk about missing Soldiers and post renaming. The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for credible information leading to the whereabouts of missing Fort Hood Soldier, Pfc. Vanessa Guillen and PV2 Gregory Wedel-Morales. The 20-year-old Vanessa Guillen was last seen April 22 between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of her Regimental Engineer Squadron Headquarters, 3rd Cavalry Regiment on Fort Hood, Texas and has not been heard from since that date. Her car keys, barracks room key, identification card and wallet were later found in the armory room where she was working earlier in the day. She was last seen in the parking lot wearing a black t-shirt and purple fitness-type pants. Originally from Houston, Texas, Pfc. Guillen maintained close ties with her family and the city of her birth, visiting there frequently while stationed at Fort Hood. Guillen is of Hispanic descent, five feet, two inches tall, 126 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Her Military Occupational Specialty is a 91F, Small Arms/Artillery Repairer. She is an avid runner. At this point, investigators have no credible information or report that Vanessa Guillen was sexually assaulted or that this case is in any way connected to the investigation into the disappearance of PV2 Gregory Wedel-Morales, who was last seen on the night of Aug. 19, 2019 while driving his car in Killeen, Texas. Both of these allegations have been widely circulated via the media and on social media. “We are completely committed to finding Vanessa and aggressively going after every single piece of credible information and every lead in this investigation,” said Chris Grey, spokesman for Army CID. “We will not stop until we find Vanessa.”   More than 150 people have been interviewed and “We are working very closely with multiple law enforcement agencies to include the FBI, Belton Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety, as well as others,” Grey said. “We have also partnered with Texas EquuSearch and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to tap into their resources as well. We have participated in ground and air searches on Fort Hood and throughout the Central Texas region.” Army CID and Fort Hood continue to seek the public’s help for information. “We know somebody out there has some very critical information pertaining to this investigation and we strongly encourage you to do the right thing and come forward,” Grey said. “Do it for Vanessa and do it for her family, friends and fellow Soldiers.” Persons with information can contact Army CID Special Agents at 254-287-2722 or the Military Police Desk at 254-288-1170. Altered Population is an investigation into filicide in South Carolina hosted by Jennifer Wells. In the beginning of today’s episode, Jennifer shares about her experience and learning about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Jennifer visits Greenville with Fred and Helen to find Baby Valentine at the Woodlawn Cemetery. She discusses her daughter’s traumatic experience around fear of being found out, and how it helped her to uncover her own fears. Jennifer begins therapy and discovers that writing about her past experiences was a powerful way to shift her mission with this podcast. Jennifer’s goals for her trip to Greenville were to do some sightseeing with Helen and get some interviews recorded. Jennifer was mesmerized by the sight of a beautiful big beech tree with exposed roots during their sightseeing at Liberty Bridge, which helped her see that she too had deep roots and was wonderfully made. Fred, Helen and Jennifer also visited Woodlawn Cemetery to try to find baby Julie. After two hours of searching, Fred asked Jennifer: “What would Tim Miller do?” Tim Miller dedicated his life to his search and rescue organization, Texas EquuSearch, founded in August of 2000 after the murder and abduction of his daughter Laura in 1984.After returning to the hotel to get warm, Helen began to have a temper tantrum of sorts, and explained it as having a popcorn kernel in the pit of her stomach, sizzling, but not knowing when it was going to pop. It all started at the book club party she had on September 8th. Helen wanted to look pretty for the party, so she grabbed a pair of scissors and tried to give herself a haircut, but two cuts in stopped. She hid all the hair she cut off in a plastic bag under the washroom sink and kept her hair in a ponytail so that no one would find out. Jennifer thought she was being Miss Independent by wanting to do her own hair and not wanting snuggle time, but she was just scared of someone finding out. Jennifer reflects on Helen’s wisdom about being found out before being ready. She wondered if Julie Valentine’s mom felt the same way–that it was only a matter of time. Jennifer felt terrible about letting her stress trickle down to Helen and considered her own intentions and fears. Jennifer worried that Helen would find out on her own that she was born before she got married to Fred. That was her kernel for nine years. The family returned to Woodlawn Memorial Park to continue to search for Baby Doe in baby land, where Jennifer finally found the headstone. They spruced up the gravesite and left flowers for Baby Valentine. Five days later, Jennifer began treatment, which was a combination of prayer, cognitive and EMDR therapy, meditation, reading, studying, working out and trusting food again. She learned to be honest about what she was struggling with and to accept praise for her successes (big or small). She also built in routines and daily structure to better support herself and to find creative outlets. One of those outlets was writing down her experiences in a journal, without editing or fear of judgement. That led to accepting the shift in her mission from ending filicide to changing the way society views childhood trauma. Jennifer finds an old voicemail from Janine Driver. A course at her Body Language Institute taught Jennifer an important lesson about observation. Two people can see exactly the same thing and report different observations. Children’s lives depend on people seeing the bigger picture and visionaries changing the way we look at adverse childhood experiences. Key Takeaways in Today’s Episode:0:42 PTSD didn’t seem to fit3:06 Nightmare subjects5:43 Goals for Greenville8:41 What the beech tree meant to Jennifer12:00 Trying to find baby Julie13:12 What would Tim Miller do?14:48 Helen’s temper tantrum16:55 The traumatic event for Helen18:40 Detangling20:17 Afraid of being found out before being ready23:42 Conversations with Marty at the cemetery26:15 Back to the drawing board28:30 Treatment30:50 Learning to accept praise32:02 Building in daily structure as support32:59 Writing practice34:06 A shift in purpose36:47 Lessons in observation42:22 Changing procedures44:59 Sunlight is the best disinfectant46:33 What is PTSD? Links/Resources:Follow us on Twitter: @altpopulationVisit us on our website at www.alteredpopulation.comLearn more about Texas EquasearchLearn more about Janine Driver and the Body Language InstituteTo learn more about PTSD and how you can get help, visit www.ptsd.va.gov or call 1-800-273-8255 and press 1 if you are a veteranLearn more about the Julie Valentine CentreIf you have any information on this case, you are encouraged to contact the Greenville Police Cold Case Investigators at 864-467-5330 or Crime Stoppers at 864-23CRIME. Email the Cold Case Unit at coldcase@greenvillesc.gov

FAA grants an emergency COA, Reno is not just for manned aircraft anymore, Chinese inflatable UAVs, more UAS regulations, and more bad behavior with drones. News Drones Get Waiver to Search for Missing Texas Woman Christina Morris The FAA granted an Emergency COA to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of Gaithersburg, MD in order to utilize an Unmanned Aircraft System in the search for a woman missing in Texas. Under the Emergency COA, NIST was able to operate an unmanned aircraft through contractor Texas EquuSearch, a non-profit organization that assists with locating missing individuals. The FAA issues COAs “on an emergency basis when: 1) a situation exists in which there is distress or urgency and there is an extreme possibility of a loss of life; 2) the proponent has determined that manned flight operations cannot be conducted efficiently; and 3) the proposed UAS is operating under a current approved COA for a different purpose or location." Texas EquuSearch used the NIST's catapult-launched MLB Super Bat, but did not locate the woman. The search was subsequently suspended until more leads could be developed. Reno air races draw new kind of aircraft: drones This year's National Championship Air Races in Reno included the Small UAS Challenge, designed to test speed, agility, and strength. Contestants navigated an obstacle course, and participated in a time trial and a dead lift. A “Drone Zone” gave event attendees an opportunity to learn more about unmanned aerial vehicles and systems. Tianjin expo reveals Chinese UAV innovations, aspiration and Now that's an AIRplane! Homemade inflatable drone reaches speeds of 120mph The Chinese are actively seeking to develop their aviation industry, and that includes unmanned vehicles. At the Tianjin International UAV and Model Aircraft Technology Exhibition, a family of UAVs were shown that featured inflatable bodies. The  SF-1, SF-2 and SF-3 have wingspans of 2.5 m, 3 m and 4.3 m respectively, and a useful load of 25 kg. They can be inflated with either air, helium, or hydrogen. This development reminds David of the experimental Goodyear Inflatoplane, produced in the 1950's and ‘60's. Europe Outlines Action Plan For UAV Policymaking Matthew Baldwin, the director of aviation and international transport affairs with the European Commission (EC) had some comments from the UAS 2014 conference held in London: The task of creating a regulatory framework that promotes UAS but addresses safety and privacy concerns. The current European framework is fragmented, and that's a competitive disadvantage. Thresholds based on UAV weight are inconsistent, absurd, and arbitrary. Baldwin said, "We believe that EASA [the European Aviation Safety Agency] is best placed to develop rules, and we envisage an EC proposal early next year to cover safety, liability and insurance, security privacy and so on.” This Dunkable Drone Will Suck Up Whale Snot for Science Whales have blowhorns that are lined with mucus and researchers want to collect that mucus to determine the health of the whale. Obviously, whale mucus is not easy to collect. The Olin College of Engineering has tackled this problem by developing and testing a drone they call Snot Bot. They want the FAA to give them permission to use it on real whales. Pilot spots drone flying near Nashville airport runway On approach to Nashville International Airport, the pilot of an American Eagle flight spotted a hovering drone. ATC notified the police air unit and the FAA is investigating. Drones snooping into homes Residents in this town are complaining about drones snooping around. One woman says her son had friends over for a pool party, and suddenly a drone was hovering overhead.  Neighbors also report seeing a drone after dark with flashing red and green lights. Phantom firmware update addresses safety concerns, FAA files appeal brief in Trappy case, a search and rescue team fights to use quadcopters, 33 organizations appeal to the FAA, machine guns versus drones, Google beats out Facebook for atmospheric satellites, and a drone pilot is charged with a felony. The News: Chinese manufacturer programs Phantom drones with no-fly zones to protect Australian airports DJI Innovations is introducing a firmware update to the Phantom 2 quadcopter “to increase flight safety and prevent accidental flights” in around 350 “No Fly Zones” world-wide. The update downloads a global GPS database of restricted locations. If the Phantom has a sufficient GPS signal, it will not fly into the restricted area. The airport list includes Category A for large international airports with a 5 mile safety zone. In the first 1.5 mile radius, you will be unable to take off. From 1.5 miles to 5 miles from the airport, there is an increasing height limitation - 35 feet at 1.5 miles to 400 feet at 5 miles. Category B features a 0.6 mile safety zone radius, and is intended for smaller airports. Inside that zone, you will be unable to take off. If you approach a safety zone from outside the radius, you receive a warning. If you accidentally fly into a safety zone, and then your Phantom acquires a GPS signal the Phantom lands immediately inside the no-takeoff area, and descends to the specified maximum height in the height-restricted area. FAA Files Appeal Brief In Closely-Watched Drone Pilot Case The FAA has filed its appeal brief in their case against Raphael Pirker, which they lost in a ruling by an NTSB judge. Two issues are raised by the FAA in the brief: 1. The judge erred in determining that Pirker's small drone was not an “aircraft,” as defined by the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs). 2. The judge erred in determining that the small drone's operation was not subject to the FARs. Search teams that rely on drones run afoul of FAA The Vernon Parish, Louisiana Sheriff's Office asked Texas EquuSearch for help in finding the missing James Stephens, and they put out a call for searchers on foot and ATV. The group has used small drones for searches since 2005, and has located the bodies of 11 missing persons. Texas EquuSearch founder Tim Miller, in referring to the FAA prohibition said, “We'll go by some of their rules, but certainly not all of them. There is a possibility he (Stephens) could be still be alive out there, so yes we're going to use it." AMA and AUVSI lead 33 organizations in calling on FAA to expedite rulemaking for Unmanned Aircraft Systems [PDF] The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), and 31 other organizations sent a letter to the FAA “encouraging the agency to expedite the rulemaking process for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operations in the U.S. airspace. The letter also calls on the FAA to allow the limited use of small UAS for commercial purposes before the final rulemaking is completed.” The letter states, "The time for resolution has come, and we cannot afford any further delays. The technology is advancing faster than the regulations to govern it. While the FAA has indicated its intention to appeal the Pirker decision to the full National Transportation Safety Board, we strongly encourage the FAA to simultaneously expedite its small UAS rulemaking and issue notice and public comment as soon as possible.” Stunning video of machine guns shooting at target drones shows how difficult hitting a remotely piloted aircraft can be When David Cenciotti posted images in The Aviationist of a small drone believed to be used by the U.S. Army in Pakistan and Iraq, some thought these UAVs would be an easy target for small arms fire. So a group at a shooting range in Arizona thought they'd test the theory with automatic weapons. They weren't very successful. Google Grabs Drone Company and Google Bought a Drone Company,
