No matter where you are on the planet you have heard about the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce which had its early beginnings way back in 1915 when Henry Giessenbier Jr. along with 31 other young men formed Young Men's Progressive Association (YMPCA) at the Mission Inn located in their hometown of St. Louis. Then, a year later, he YMPCA became known as the Junior Citizens and soon the Junior Chamber of Commerce, after affiliating with the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce. The organization has a long and storied history of helping young men and young women become true leaders in their community, state and nation.  Here I sit down with JCI Senator  #63877 Wayde Burkhart and chat it up about the real estate market as well as an upcoming Region VI meeting which involves six states coming to Des Moines on April 19 - 21.  The Coach Mo Golf Show welcomes six-time NCAA Division-III West Region Coach of the Year and a nine-time Northwest Conference Coach of the Year, Coach MJ McCloskey to the show. Coach MJ started the George Fox Women's Golf program from the ground-up in 2006 and led them to their first NCAA DIII National title in 2023 at Mission Inn, in Howie-in-the-Hills, FL in 2023.  It was a dramatic, controversial, and eventful Championship that flooded social media and national news with videos and news on the tournament's controversial pin position on #6. In this episode you'll hear all about the championship, the controversy, as well as discussions I have with Coach McCloskey's new book, "How Girls Win." Coach MJ McCloskey Bio:In 2006, McCloskey launched the first George Fox University women's golf program and since then has led the team to prestige as one of the most dominant in the country bringing home 7 NCAA trophies including winning the 2023 NCAA D-III Women's Golf National Championship. Her team was only the third NCAA D-III Golf team west of the Mississippi to win the NCAA National Championship To date, the program has won 97 collegiate tournaments and has been recognized in four separate seasons (including this season) as the top-ranked team in the country. Coach MJ has a marketing degree from the Univ. of Oregon and an MBA from the University of Portland. The team has also won 13 straight Northwest Conference titles.. The program also boasts a NCAA Individual National Champion, two NCAA Individual National RunnerUps, two National Players of the Year, three NCAA Freshman Player of the Year honorees, 27 Women Golf Coaches Assn (WGCA) All Americans, 34 WGCA All-Region team members, 10 NWC Player of the Year honorees, 57 All-NW Conference players, and 24 WGCA All-American Scholar winners. Players from her program have qualified for the US Women's Amateur as well as for the LPGA Portland Classic event. In 2013, McCloskey was promoted to the role of Director of Golf for George Fox, one of the first women to be named to that position in NCAA Division-III and oversees the development of both the men's and women's golf teams at the university. For McCloskey, it's never been about awards but helping young women find their greatness. Her passion is to help student-athletes grow stronger and realize that anything is possible with a positive mindset, strong work ethic, and a passionate desire to learn. McCloskey served 2 terms as D-III Director on the Board of Directors for the Women Golf Coaches Association (WGCA). She is currently serving on the NCAA Division-III Women's Golf Regional Championship Selection Committee and is also part of the WGCA Mentorship program. McCloskey has served on the Tournament Golf Foundation Board (operators of the LPGA Portland Classic) and many years on the First Tee of Portland/Campbell Course Board of Directors. She continues to help out as a volunteer for both organizations. In 2023, she was nominated and placed on the ballot for the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame. McCloskey holds Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Portland and a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing from the University of Oregon. Lewis checks in this week from sunny California! As Lewis heads up to San Francisco for a show, he has one question for Georgia Senate Republican candidate Hershel Walker…really? Herschel, REALLY? It's come out in the news recently that the former pro football player has paid for an abortion for a woman he was having a relationship with. Even though he's representing a party that is anti-abortion, does this recent revelation make him pro-abortion? Oh, and by the way, don't elect someone who can't contribute anything. That's no way to run a Senate. Anyway…moving on from that…if you're ever in the area, be sure to stop by Albertson's in Paso Robles, California. They have absolutely terrific wine at great prices. Unfortunately, our host didn't get to make a stop there this trip, but he highly recommends it if you're ever in the area and looking for phenomenal wine. Also on this trip, Lewis got to stay at one of his favorite places in the country, the Mission Inn in Riverside, California. At the Mission Inn, there are two beautiful parrots, a red feathered female Macaw and a striking blue feather male Macaw. After his shows in California this weekend, Lewis has a little time off and is heading back to the Palm Desert (where he was at the start of the week) to meet up with some friends and maybe even play some golf again. Last time Lewis played golf out there, it was so hot and just felt like the sun was right above your head. Hopefully for the next round of golf it won't be so hot and our host can focus on his game.  The live rants come from this past weekend's shows at the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside, CA and the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, CA.  For advertising opportunities email: advertise@thelaughbutton.com SUBMIT RANTS TO LEWIS https://www.lewisblack.com/pages/live  Lewis' Grammy-nominated special, "Thanks For Risking Your Life" is available now! https://tlbrecords.lnk.to/LewisWE  SUBSCRIBE TO THE RANTCAST https://thelaughbutton.com/podcasts/lewis-blacks-rantcast  FOLLOW LEWIS https://www.lewisblack.com/  https://www.instagram.com/thelewisblack/  https://mobile.twitter.com/thelewisblack  https://www.facebook.com/thelewisblack/  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3FbbI6zNALJhHAhwOJhEyg Learn more about your ad choices. My wife and I just spent probably the most enjoyable weekends we've had at The Mission Inn in Riverside, California, for our 17th. The highlight was Henry Franklin on bass in the Presidential Lounge both Friday and Saturday night, with two different pianists: Jimmy Dykes and Gary Matsumoto. Both nights featured jazz standards and classics--and a few of their own compositions. Skip's solos display originality and technique while staying within an arm's reach of the melody and original rhythm. I never have the feeling that he's just winging it or noodling around in the outback somewhere. His bass produced a whole lot of sustain when he wanted it, such that his stopped notes rang just like his open strings, which I do not notice in all bassists. And this was only his back-up bass since his primary bass was at the luthiers. (Both have his characteristic lion's head scroll, though.) --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

As with other corporate professionals entering the innkeeper arena, there is much to be drawn from prior work experiences that can help to differentiate a property on many levels. For Wendy Collins and Laura Shaddock, this means fully leveraging technology for both pleasing guests, and effectively running The Mission Inn. After acquiring the property in 2016, Wendy and Laura quickly automated pre- and post-stay emails that provide insights on their favorite events around town, and encourage guests to leave positive online reviews, respectively. They also use a new cloud-based guest booking engine that allows them to manage guest bookings from their mobile devices. In addition, Wendy and Laura have expanded their 2,000 Facebook followers into Instagram, which allows them to appeal to younger guests. The property also has an email database of more than 5,000 people for their ongoing e-blasts, which have an open rate of 40 to 45 percent – whereas the industry email open rate is only 10 percent. Another way The Mission Inn differentiates itself is through its in-house concert series – where they have top musical talent perform at the property. Wendy and Laura use these concerts as a great way to draw people to the property during the winter months, and it enhances overall word-of-mouth marketing – with people actually booking their stays when there is a concert. As a result of these efforts, The Mission Inn has built a loyal following, which allows them to do 100 percent of their bookings direct – without needing to rely on OTAs. In this podcast, Wendy shares her innkeeper story, and how they truly focus on providing specialized guest experiences.

Exhibition: January 18–March 29, 2020 By 1930, the California Style dominated Southern California. Anchored by Frank Miller’s renowned Mission Inn, Riverside stood at the center of it all. From 1910 to 1930, Miller, city leaders, and developers commissioned signature architects for variants of the California Style, enhancing Riverside’s status as a mythical Mediterranean oasis. Henry L. A. Jekel helped them do it. Born in Buffalo, NY, in 1876, adjacent to the Erie Canal District, once called the “nostrils of hell”, Jekel spent his early career in the bare-knuckle arena of early skyscraper construction. By 1921, he re-emerged in Riverside as a studio architect of the eclectic California Style. His designs anchor several of Riverside’s historic districts and some are designated Landmarks of the City of Riverside, eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Based upon the book by H. Vincent Moses and Catherine Whitmore, this exhibition (co-curated by them) means to preserve his legacy.

The Alexandria Hotel & DNLA Hotel Haunts with Craig Owens

When in the city of Angeles you can’t help but look for ghosts at some of LA’s legendary hotels, especially the notorious Alexandria Hotel, Mission Inn and Hotel Cecil.  Meet the man behind Bizarre Los Angeles, Craig Owens. Craig’s an LA-based writer and photographer who began staging vintage style photo shoots at haunted hotels as an idea for an Old Hollywood themed project. Little did he know that while on location, he he would catch his first ghost on film. This left him wondering if his photo shoots were somehow triggering paranormal activity. Craig’s book, "Haunted by History, Vol. 1," earned a Publishers Weekly Star Review. His encyclopedic knowledge of each hotel's history, paired with his haunting photography and sense of humor has made him a favorite of historical societies and ghost enthusiasts alike. His next volume, featuring the true histories of eight more haunted Southern California hotels, will be released in 2019. He’s appeared on "My Ghost Story: Caught on Film" about an apparition at the Palomar Inn in Old Town Temecula. Since that time, he's been quoted in James Bartlett's book, "Gourmet Ghosts 2," and Colin Dickey's book: "Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places." More recently, he has appeared on Nerdist's popular "Bizarre States" online podcast, and has been featured in "Los Angeles Magazine," and "NBC Los Angeles." https://bizarrela.com https://www.facebook.com/bizarrelosangeles     Ghost Magnet Facebook Group:  https://www.facebook.com/Ghost-Magnet-with-Bridget-Marquardt-2480154975336666/   Bridget Marquardt Bridget Marquardt is best known to television audiences and pop-culture connoisseurs as the sweet and brainy star of E! At that time, he was as a seven-year-old boy playing on the grounds of a Southern plantation known as Waverley, located outside of West Point, Mississippi. While Waverley’s owners admitted to seeing and hearing the ghost of a young female child, Craig never encountered her. Yet the atmosphere and history of Waverley stayed with him long after his family moved to Texas. In 1994, he moved to Los Angeles and began to work freelance in the film and television industry. His production credits include Fudge (1995), The Christmas Box (1995), Wag the Dog(1997), Phone Booth (2002), and The Gilmore Girls (2000-2001). In 2002, Craig left film production to work for the Century City Chamber of Commerce and later the International Cinematographers Guild, I.A.T.S.E. Local 600. While working for the chamber of commerce, he contributed articles for the Century City View and wrote the History of Century City. In 2009, Craig began staging vintage style photo shoots at haunted hotels as an idea for an Old Hollywood themed project. While on location, he experienced paranormal activity. This left him wondering if his photo shoots were somehow triggering it. The following year, he started his Facebook blog, Bizarre Los Angeles, a page dedicated to Los Angeles’ forgotten history. He also continued to hold vintage photos shoots at haunted locations. Little did he know that his love for haunted hotels would bring media attention. In 2013, he appeared on My Ghost Story: Caught on Film after he unintentionally photographed an apparition at the Palomar Inn in Old Town Temecula, California. The following year, the online magazine, The Verge, published an article on his paranormal experiences at the Aztec Hotel in Monrovia, California. Craig Owens has now gained notoriety for his photography and his passion for historical research. He has also appeared in other people’s books, including Gourmet Ghosts 2 by James T. Bartlett and Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places by Colin Dickey. He has also been featured in articles published on Los Angeles Magazine and NBC Los Angeles. While he firmly believes that ghosts exist, he is reluctant to accept all paranormal stories. He instead approaches the subject with a good deal of skepticism, preferring to err on the side of not believing enough. He also encourages his readers to form their own opinions as to whether ghosts are real, and warns people not to believe in ghost legends unless the legends are supported by historical fact.   https://bizarrela.com https://www.facebook.com/bizarrelosangeles     About Haunted By History, Volume 1 Haunted by History, Volume I, by Craig Owens uncovers little known facts about eight prominent historic hotels in Southern California and the origins behind many of their ghost stories. Not only does his well-documented research separate facts from fiction, but Owens also keeps the subject matter interesting by interweaving historic photos with his own elaborately staged Old Hollywood-style photos shot in the most haunted rooms, hallways, and lobbies. This unique book blends solid research, fascinating insights, and haunting photography that will appeal to believers and non-believers alike. Hotels and inns featured in Vol. 1 are the Hotel del Coronado, Victorian Rose Bed & Breakfast, Julian Gold Rush Hotel, Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, Alexandria Hotel, Wyndham Garden Pierpont Inn, Banning House Lodge, and Glen Tavern Inn. https://www.amazon.com/Haunted-History-Separating-Historic-California/dp/0997688106

As a historic, luxury hotel, the Mission Inn has won all kinds of awards.  But what makes the Mission Inn so magical is that the founder, Frank Miller, was an avid world traveler. Frank collected the essences of iconic European destinations. He came back from Europe with a head full of dreams, and made those dreams reality for travelers in Southern California. You won’t find another property anywhere,  that manages to successfully marry so many different architectural styles. From Gothic to Moorish Revival and Mediterranean, it’s possible to feel transported here without leaving the country. Famous authors like Anne Rice have stayed here, and the hotel has hosted dozens of events for celebrities and presidents. It’s a hidden gem. Some hotels cash in on their ghosts, but the Mission Inn prefers to be a little more discrete. You might have some luck getting stories out of the bartender, if you visit. We’ve got the inside scoop on which rooms might still be occupied, even after the guests check out. Todd says that he has not heard any negative comments about Chambers Bay. They may not love it but don't hate it. But Todd says you have to have a positive frame of mind. Rory said that this is a pure links golf course and Todd feels that the European golfers have an advantage with their knowledge of keeping the ball low.  Phil Mickelson has a really good shot to win in Todd's mind, because the course is such an unknown and you have to be creative player and that fits Phil's game. Phil loves a thinking man golf's course. Jeff asks Todd about PGA Executive Director of USGA Mike Davis' request to have players familiarize themselves with the course prior to the tournament. This is a unique course and you have to learn the nuances of the course. The practice rounds have been taking a long time. A lot of information gathering.  Todd says that it is hard to predict a favorite or winner here. Rory hasn't played well lately but he has taken some time off and reboot and Todd likes his chances as well as Jordan Spieth's. The winner of the FedEx St. Jude Classic was Fabian Gomez his first on the PGA Tour. Jeff has a story on PGA Tour.com with a first look at the U.S. Open and Holly mentions that if you want to see some great Flyovers of the front 9 holes at Chambers Bay. Mike Purkey, Global Golf Post, calls in from Chambers Bay, and talks about the weather and the course. Says the players don't have any idea of what to do or expect because they don't know how Mike Davis will set up the course that has only been in existence for about 7 years. The only time the course will look green is first thing in the morning then it will turn tan and yellow. Mike says that it already looks like the green has been rubbed off the practice green. Holly asks Mike about Tiger's chances given his play of late. "Anybody's guess how he will do?" Mike likes Rory's chances and also thinks Rickie Fowler will do well at Chambers Bay. But he says that it may be one of the weakest U.S. Open field that Mike Purkey has seen in many, many years. Liesel Niehaus and Mike Quinn call in from South Africa to talk with Holly about their product, Swingclick, which is the perfect timing and tempo swing trainer that you can actually wear on the course. The Swingclick gives audible clicks on your swing at the three key points of your swing. Their product was one of the top products at the 25th Anniversary ING Spring Conference held at Mission Inn at Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla. Gary Gilchrist who has his academy there had a chance to test the Swingclick along with some of his other teachers. Gilchrist thinks that the Swingclick is one of the best training aids he has ever used. Holly and Jeff talk wrap up another hour of intelligent golf talk discussing the other professional tours. The KPMG Women's PGA Championship won by Inbee Park. It's a three-peat at the KPMG for Park, but the first win as the newly created "PGA" Women's Championship. Can't be talking and acting as if everything is okay when he shot his highest round of 85.  Bob and Jeff talk about Tiger and coming back too soon after his injuries and how much he may have set himself back doing that. Now he has a new swing coach. Jeff said he's been asking a question about how long can he put up with this and the second is he ready to retire. Bob says that he feels that there's  too much out there for him to retire and he feels like there's another run in him. Really nobody retires, they play on majors on both tours. Jeff asks about others like Phil Mickelson headed into the U.S. Open and what can we take away from some of their play of late and how that affects their outlook for the next Major. Bob said the golf course is so different. A good attitude is paramount and doing your homework. Bob said not to put too much stock in Rory's last two European events and his poor performance.  The Golf Insiders welcomes back Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, after being off for heart surgery. Steve calls in from the Women's PGA Championship in Westchester Country Club in Harrison, N.Y. in the first time with the PGA moniker. The talk about the new venue is outstanding. Last week Suzann Pettersen won the Manuflife LPGA Classic. Suzann lives in the Dr. Phillips area here in Central Florida. Jeff and Steve talk about Lydia Ko's chances as well as others. Mike Jamison, Executive Director of International Network of Golf, calls in to talk about the recent 25th Annual Spring Conference that was held at Mission Inn at Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla. About 160 people attended the conference including business and industry leaders in the golf world as well as many members of the golf media. Great products at this year's conference including Swingclick, the High Heat Driver by Knuth Golf, who developed the slope system or the PGA. Putting training aid out of Tampa Laser Training aid for putting. Dennis Walters put on a demonstration. The Dennis Walters Golf Show is a one hour combination of "Golf Lessons and Life Lessons". It is great golf, great fun, along with an inspiring message. The show is also about reaching for dreams and Dennis is not talking about a dream you have at night.  Flinggolf is a natural sport for Lacrosse, Baseball, Hockey, and Tennis Players fit right into the adaptive theme of the ING conference  Lance Ringler, Golfweek talks about LSU winning the 2015 Men's Div 1 NCCA Golf Championship. Lance believes that the women's tournament overshadowed the men's this year for the first time in a while and both were played at The Concession Golf Club. It was a great two weeks of golf in Bradenton, Fla. The number one men's seed has never won the tournament and Lance feels that it is due to the match play format. Jeff and Lance talk about the collegiate players who then turn pro and how they have been successful whether they stay for four years or not.

Holly and Jeff talk about Chris Kirk's win at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Makes his 4th Tour win. Jeff said that Kirk was the last man standing and birdied the 18th hole, which his competitors who were chasing him could not do.  Holly and Jeff talk about Jordan Spieth who finished second has had several this year. There were at least 11 people who withdrew from the AT&T Byron Nelson. Torrential rains have been falling and the course is sloppy and wet and probably a lot of rain delays. Jeff and Holly also discuss Ian Poulter and Ricky Fowler being rated as the most overrated players on the Tour in a recent survey. The survey was before Fowler's recent win.  Bob Harig, ESPN.com, calls in to talk to Holly and Jeff about the Texas event with 12 players withdrawn. Bob said that the Byron Nelson had their best field in 8 or 9 years until the rain came and players started bailing out of the tournament.  It's a long year and there are a lot of tournaments to play. Bob said that the players are not obligated to play. Day had dizziness issues before and Poulter said he tweaked his body earlier in the day and had to withdraw.  Holly asks Bob about how these 12 players pulling out might help some of the remaining players who stayed who have been playing well. Bob said that if you are putting well those players have an advantage now with the weather. Holly asks Bob about Byeong-hun An's win at the BMW Championship. An is another example of how deep the tour really is right now. Bob, Holly and Jeff also discuss how much golf Rory has been playing many tournaments and didn't fare that well at the BMW.  Bob said that maybe Rory missing the cut might help him down the road or at least in the near future with all of his travels. Holly and Jeff give away a stay at the Cinnamon Inn in Mt Dora. Homemade breakfast and the great cinnamon rolls. Colin Montgomerie has won 3 events on the Champions Tour in the past 370 days and they have all been Major championships.  Baylor and Stanford are playing for the NCAA Championship at The Concession in Bradenton, Fla., while the Golf Insiders is being aired live. The men's NCAA Championship starts this week coming up. Mike Jamison, Executive Director of the International Network of Golf, calls in to talk about The 25th Anniversary of the International Network of Golf that starts Sunday evening at Mission Inn at Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla. ING is the industry's only media-based networking organization.  The conference will feature a full schedule of networking and educational events. This year's theme will be growing the game of golf and will feature some of the nontraditional perspectives of the game including Sling Golf, more like a hybrid between Jai-alai and golf. Also other attendees will be the Freedom Golf Association, non-profit organization dedicated to bringing joy and a sense of freedom to the special needs community through their inclusion in the game of golf. Golf phenom 3-year-old Tommy Morrisey will be there, also Dennis Walters will do a trick shot exhibition from his specialized golf cart. Many other companies including TaylorMade, Nike, Razor, Bridgestone, Tour Edge. People coming from as far off as South Africa and Australia. Lance Ringler, Golfweek, calls in from The Concession Golf Club to talk about the NCAA Division 1 Women's Championship with Baylor vs Stanford. Lance said that The Concession an outstanding Match Play course since it is tough and can be set up so many ways. It's been a second shot golf course this week for the women. Probably won't be the same for the men since they have more distance off the tee next week when the Men's NCAA Div 1 Championship tees off at The Concession.
