It was complicated because he had to work with a company that made thousands of different items and get them to people on time. Some industries don't make thousands of items. They make a couple of them or 100, and they think it's a big deal.[00:01:04] - . Peter Christian is a former engineer who retired at the end of 2018 and moved to Florida with his wife. Peter has written two books and is an adjunct professor at Alberni University teaching project management ”i can never stay in the line so I guess I was never cut something I had to do holding a garage I've read a lot of engineering documents and stuff it's a nice sedative the necessary output from an engineer for specific things is intense.[00:07:23] - Industrial engineering is a mix of business and engineering. It's not simple to make a crayon. He has worked with 320 or 340 companies in his lifetime. He used to work with a company that made thousands of different items and had to get them out to people all the time. As a business consultant, you have to teach people how to solve their problems and help them see the story in what they're trying to do. It's not the technical stuff. It's common sense stuff that's hard to teach in the business. It was funny when his son pointed out to him that 90% of what he was doing wasn't in the textbooks.[00:15:17] - In the new Top Gun movie, tom Cruise is teaching a new group of hot shots how to do the F 18. In his classes. He tries not to memorize all the formulas because he wants the students to understand the concept and then apply them.[00:18:19] - Mentoring and teaching is a good way to give back to the younger generations. What he looks for in a good mentee is curiosity, inquisitiveness and ambition. He also looks for someone who doesn't want to take no for an answer and someone who is not afraid to ask questions. In his opinion, young people should be interested in everything. His son went into the army and he trained as a helicopter pilot. After he got done with the training, he was asked to head a maintenance group. He agreed because it was more experience for him and he got to meet more people.[00:25:33] - After writing two books, he was asked to write an article a month for a year on a topic that keeps him awake at night. Now he has 20 different topics that he has written about or on the way to write about. The latest one is fear of losing your job.[00:28:12] - In the 2008 2009 time frame, the mortgage prices and the bank stopped lending and the company stopped using consultants. The company had a decrease in business and it was tying into its line of credit to keep things going. It was like, if we don't start, the company may go belly up.[00:31:08] - Engineer has written three books. The first one is called “what about The Vermin Problem” and The Other Two are called “information“ and “the Good and The Bad” in the first book he talks about companies that he dealt with and individuals that did interesting things on a positive and negative way. In the Second Book, it's about a company that didn't listen to him. If you don't Communicate well, you're probably not going to succeed.[00:36:11] - Peter has written two books. Peter will be following Peter on Medium to follow up on the third book. The Show Notes will put the links to both books down. In the Show Notes, Peter asks Peter and the guys not to keep them up at night or get some sleep.Other episodes you'll enjoy:https://www.spreaker.com/user/12442327/episode-61-jennifer-garretthttps://www.spreaker.com/user/12442327/episode-63-timothy-douglashttps://www.spreaker.com/user/12442327/episode-66-gavin-sequeira Connect with me:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedougthompson/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Doug-Thompson-Podcast-110928150634768YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCz2qwXN-yIHHUiX4Y-e5mwQTwitter: https://twitter.com/thedougthompsonLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thedougthompson/Loved this episode? This week we give a recap of the 2022 Pennsylvania Hemp Summit Expo that took place in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, April 26 and 27 at the Lancaster County Convention Center. First we talk to Lancaster Farming's digital content editor Dan Sullivan who covered the event for the newspaper and also emceed the Shark Tank competition. After the conversation with Dan, we hear Pennsylvania Ag Secretary Russell Redding's opening remarks from the Hemp Summit. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has been very supportive of the hemp industry in Pennsylvania, knowing that the potential for Pennsylvania's farmers and entrepreneurs is huge, but of course it's not without it's challenges. "We know based on what we have seen around the world, that there is potential in hemp and all of its components," Redding told the crowd. "We said at the very first summit that the Pennsylvania hemp industry is defined by the use of all of the plant. It is the fiber, it is the seed, it is the oil, it's the feed, it's the CBD. It is not a single component of the industry. It is all of the plant. And therein lies our challenge." The two day hemp expo was a precursor to the full summit to be held in November 2022. Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Groups Podcast: College Group Tutoring and Study Review Groups

S04-E21 This episode introduces us to Morgan who is a study group leader for the SI program at Alvernia University in Pennsylvania. Morgan shared her experience as a study group leader in a general anatomy and psychology course. Topics of our conversation included how she became a study group leader, reasons that the A and P course was challenging for many first-year students, some of the most effective study group session activities and how she uses Kahn Academy videos during her sessions, some of Morgan's personal and professional development outcomes as a result of serving as a study group leader, and concludes with a powerful reflection about her experience in college education. To provide some additional context for our interview, I have included several PDF documents. First, an overview of the institution. Second, an overview of the Academic Success Center that hosts the study group program. (Bonus) Alvernia University was founded in 1958 by the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis first as a college for the sisters and then as a four-year liberal arts college. Many of the college's renovated classrooms and offices had been used for elementary and secondary education before 1958. The college's first building, Francis Hall, was built in 1926 and originally housed an orphanage. Alvernia received its charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1960 and was first accredited in 1967 by the Commission of Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In 1961, the college accepted its first lay female students. In 1971, it admitted its first male commuting students, and in 1973, the first male resident students were admitted.

Mezzo soprano singer and pastoral musician Jamie Caporizo visits the pod to share something a little different: a research hole she would like to go down, but hasn't started the research part yet. On the way, she teaches us plenty of other things, including the age when a female's voice fully matures, what the Bel canto style of singing is, and a little bit about Leider. Take a drink every time Jamie says “another research hole” if you want to get tanked. SHOW NOTES: The Singer's Ego: Finding Balance Between Music and Life is a book by professional singer Lynn Eustis about the “psychological conflicts that make up a singer's world.” Did you know that sisters and nuns are not the same thing? According to the website Simply Catholic, a nun typically spends her life in prayer and work and silence in a cloistered convent, while a sister may or may not live in community, and lives an active life typically serving in health care or educational institutions. Sisters of the Holy Cross is a Catholic congregation of religious sisters that Jamie worked with as a choir director in South Bend, Indiana. Ministry is an important part of their mission. They also acknowledge and speak out against modern racism, have publicly disavowed some of Trump's refugee policies, and aim to combat climate change. You can read their statements on various issues on their website. Jamie is still working with sisters in her role as the Senior Director of Mission and Ministry at Alvernia University. You can read the story of how the Bernadine Franciscan Sisters wound up in Reading on the Alvernia U website. In my vague attempt to explain the concept of scaffolding in education, I only managed to explain a small part of it. Upeople.edu has a broader breakdown of the concept in their article What is scaffolding in education? According to Brittanica, Frauenliebe und-leben (German for “Woman's Love and Life”) song cycle by Robert Schumann, written in 1840, with text by the French-born German poet Adelbert von Chamisso. The text of the songs is written from a woman's perspective. The text of the songs is written from a woman's perspective, and all of Schumann's songs for this cycle were written for the female voice. For "Love in Stages," Jamie's concert-to-be: Here are some links to performances of the songs Jamie mentioned: Frauenliebe und-leben: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym9mHHsXvGI If I Were a Bell from Guys and Dolls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMLq68cMMNk What I Did for Love from A Chorus Line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZ4VL2u6Yw4 The song Jamie sang on the episode was E amore un ladroncello from Cosi fan tutte. Dr. Renee Harvin's bio in her own words. God's Amazing Grace  I was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania at Temple University Hospital on July 28, 1957. I grew up in North Philadelphia with both my parents. I was the oldest of 6 children with my mother, in all, I am the oldest female of 14 siblings. I attended the Philadelphia school system. I never experience being hungry, being without clothing, or not having a place to live. It was by God's amazing grace. I loved going to church, and I was filled with the Holy Ghost at a young age. By the age 14, I stopped going to church and it seemed that is when the devil pounce upon me.  I became adventurous, promiscuous, curious about life, I was smart, independent, but gullible, naive, always making the wrong choices in life. I had my first two sons out of wedlock, and my youngest son was born on my first-year anniversary. I was 23 years old. I was successful in school obtaining my first Associates degree. I purchased my first home, working two jobs, caring for three sons and all that came with.  My lifestyle enhanced with the drinking of alcohol experimenting drugs and hanging out on weekends. I was emotionally fearful of this lifestyle because of intimidations, controlling, and not realizing it was the beginnings of an addiction. I tried to slow down this lifestyle. I stopped participating in routines during weekdays, socializing only on weekends, going back to church with my sons on Sundays, and giving my family the attention, they needed. But, still doing things “Renee's way.”  March 1987, I experienced the trauma of my middle son being killed in a car accident, he was 9 years old. It seemed like my life had ended too, and instead of turning to the God I thought I knew so well, family, or other supports, I turned to and I lived a life of drug addiction for 10 years.  Now let me talk about my healing and rebuilding. Praise God I went back to work after 10 years of addiction. Through that whole time, God never left me, nor forsaken me.  I have been clean and sober for over 23 years to date. Through this time, life continued to happen. With more trials, tribulations, and triumphs.  By the grace of God, all my children are doing well. I am blessed with a total of 23 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Through this time, I continued to fellowship and study the word of God at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, since 2007. Doing various ministries. I also achieved my associates, bachelors, master's, and PhD Degrees. God opened doors, and the place where I started my healing, 1997, Behavioral Wellness Center at Girard, is where I have started a career working as a counselor, and an Adjunct Professor at Alvernia University for the past 7 years.  I am 63 years old, and guest what, I know God is not through with me yet. He is about to open another door and its about to blow my mind and yours. The Word says in Philippians 1:6 “For I am confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." It is by God's Amazing Grace I am here today; it is all for His Glory.

Conor Delaney got his securities licenses at age 19 while attending Alvernia University, switched to night classes and began to grow his practice during the day from nothing. In just five years’ time, his partner, Courtnie Nein, had joined him and they ended up building one of the largest practices at their prior firm out of 1,500 advisors. They rose to the top and decided they wanted more. His successful partnership with Courtnie led the team to start Good Life Financial Advisors. This gave them the ability to do more for their current and future clients, while also creating the opportunity to roll out a national platform that is intuitively designed to accommodate successful advisors who share in the same desire - serving their clients, community and family. The service organization to support other financial advisors was formed shortly after, and they began to add the other entities to fill the needs of their advisors. He has since built a firm of independent financial advisors serving more than 15,000 people around the U.S. in more than 30 different states. Since 2012, Good Life has grown from two advisors and $253,000 in assets to more than 135 advisors and almost $3.5 billion in AUM. When Larry Zerbe took over as director of the COR (City of Reading) Tennis Program in 2006, his vision was to expose city kids, most of whom would be picking up a racket for the first time, to the game of tennis. Zerbe tells Zeke that there originally had been some consideration given to limiting COR to city kids, but the lure of tennis, high-quality instruction, top-notch competition, and fun attracted more and more suburban kids and eventually every school district in the county was coming to the program. Zerbe, who grew up in the Oakbrook housing project and now is the Alvernia University tennis coach, tells Zeke that COR has helped break down barriers and turned the program into a melting pot – with tennis the common denominator fostering a connection between kids from different worlds. The kids come to COR for the tennis but leave with an appreciation and awareness that serves them for a lifetime. The remarkable thing about COR bridging social gaps is that tennis traditionally discriminates fiscally and culturally. Zerbe tells Zeke that he and his COR staff also offer adult classes. As for tennis, COR has produced a number of outstanding scholastic and collegiate players through its summer and winter programs. Zerbe tells Zeke that the COR program receives support from the Reading Recreation Department, Fromuth Tennis and the United States Tennis Association. The connections Zerbe has made with the USTA enables COR to send kids to the U.S. Open and Philadelphia Freedom matches.

Shame is a complex social emotion that has a particularly negative valence; in the West it is associated with failure, inappropriateness, dishonor, disgrace. But within the Confucian tradition, there is in addition a distinct, positive variety of moral shame a virtue that, as Bongrae Seok writes, “is not for losers but for self-reflective moral leaders”. In Moral Psychology of Confucian Shame: Shame of Shamelessness (Rowman and Littlefield), Seok draws on textual evidence from Confucius, Mencius, and Xunzi, as well as contemporary moral psychology, anthropology, biology, linguistics, and ancient Greek philosophy, to illuminate one aspect of the rich Confucian tradition in moral psychology. Seok, who is associate professor of philosophy at Alvernia University, explains how moral shame involves the whole self’s sensitivity to moral ideals and supports the Confucian virtues of self-cultivation, self-reflection and learning.     Learn more about your ad choices. Mike Miller this past season became the winningest men's basketball coach in Alvernia University history. In 13 seasons, he is 236-118 with six conference titles and six NCAA Division III tournament berths. The men’s basketball program and its sustained excellence have been embraced by the Alvernia community. “Most of our games down the stretch and in the playoffs are sellouts -- the kids (his players) like to see that,” Miller says. Miller stresses fundamentals, relying on man defense and running just a few offensive sets. His teams are mentally tough, focused grinders. “You have to find a mentally disciplined kid who is going to work on it,” Miller tells Zeke. “The best thing for us right now is player development. We work on fundamentals. It’s getting tougher and tougher to find that kid who is going to be a basketball junkie and be coachable.” Miller talks about this past season with Zeke when Alvernia was 15-11, losing four of its last seven games including a loss to Lebanon Valley in a MAC Commonwealth play-in-game. “We ran into a lot of injuries last season,” Miller tells Zeke. Miller played for Lloyd Wolf at Holy Name and then was an assistant under Jim Gano, Rick Binder and Steve Hahn at Reading High. Miller took his first head coaching job at Kutztown High and left after one season to be the Reading head coach. He coached Donyell Marshall, who became an All-American at Connecticut and had an18-year NBA career. He now is the head coach at Central Connecticut. At Alvernia the past two seasons Miller coached Donyell’s son, Marquis Marshall, the MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year this past season. “Donyell and Marquis are very much alike – very coachable, skills, good hands and loving to play,” Miller tells Zeke. “But Donyell is 6-11 and Marquis is 6-5.” Speaking of fathers-sons, Miller coaches his son Mike, a 6-2 guard who will be a senior next year. “I didn’t have to push him to do anything -- he’s been around the game all his life,” the elder Miller shares with Zeke. After Miller left Reading High in 1994 with a 145-31 record, he spent 10 seasons as an Alvernia assistant to Jack McCloskey before succeeding him at Alvernia. “I’m doing what I love to do and get paid to it; it can’t get better than that,” Miller tells Zeke.

Ralph Clark is the first head football coach at Alvernia University, which is starting up the program and will kick off in the 2018 season in the Middle Atlantic Conference that includes Albright College. Clark shares with Zeke the opportunities that come with creating a program. "People talk about the challenges of a startup program," Clark says. "I don’t look at challenges. I am the ultimate optimist. Challenges are all opportunities." Clark tells Zeke that he is no stranger to the situation, having been a freshman running back when Joe Walton, the former New York Giants and Washington Redskins tight end and head coach of the New York Jets for seven seasons, created the football program at Robert Morris University. "He told us, ‘Be happy for your teammates' success,'" Clark said. "That stuck with me. It is important to understand and accept your role and know how it fits in the overall success of the team. The ultimate goal is to win the game. Don’t tell me what we can’t do, I'm gonna tell you what we can do with hard work." Clark has 19 years of coaching experience but had never been a head coach until now. "The difference between defensive coordinator and head coach is that everything falls on your shoulders," Clark tells Zeke. "You have to think broad-based." While his recent focus has been defense, Clark has coached every position except offensive line. After an extensive search by Alvernia, the school hired Clark because of his character and integrity, his charisma, his success as a recruiter, and being a players' coach that players love to play for. His boundless energy and emphasis on faith, family and academics made him the perfect fit for Alvernia. It is a shared respect. "Alvernia is a special place," Clark tells Zeke. "We do have core values and mission. That is what I was looking for. Alvernia is the most supportive environment both academically and athletically than any school I've been at. We’ve got more support directed to our students. It’s all about the atmosphere. It’s different at Alvernia." While they are not playing until the 2018 season, Clark tells Zeke he is working hard to bring in recruits in 2017 so they can train and get to know the culture. "We’ll do everything we are allowed to do (under NCAA guidelines); we just aren’t playing games in the 2017 season," Clark says. "We’ll get them in the weight room and on the field," Clark says. "But we will focus on ourselves. We won't be playing games or scrimmaging other schools. What it does is give you an opportunity to think about how it is you want it as a program. You get to mold and shape it brick by brick. Anybody that really loves football will embrace the opportunity. I am looking for guys that want to stay and help build the team. If you’re from this area, then stay here. We can build something special right here."

For those who enter the field of addiction as a profession, passion for the work and the people they interact with is necessary to help individuals and families in need. Jamie Cappiello, a recent Alvernia University graduate from the Behavioral Health Program, already has hands on experience in her field of study and is eager to continue working to help educate others. Jamie was an intern at the Council on Chemical Abuse (COCA) during her Senior year at Alvernia University, and after graduation helped facilitate an evidence-based curriculum “Too Good For Violence.” During her time with COCA, Jamie has taught prevention education in the classroom, and came to realize the importance and empowerment of education. “People don’t realize that drugs, substance and behavioral abuses really are bad,” said Jamie on what she learned during her time working with the Prevention Staff. Jamie also recently finished her Senior Honor’s Thesis “Binge Eating Disorder: Disordered Eating or Deadly Addiction?” In her paper, Jamie compared binge eating disorder to drug and alcohol addiction. During her senior year Jennifer participated in an ‘Earn and Learn’ class that COCA offered. After graduating from Alvernia University she joined the COCA staff. Now she gets to go to area schools, manage the COCA website and social media outlets and is involved with creating and producing COCA related materials that are disseminated in the community. Jennifer states that she finds fulfillment in being able to reach out to high school students with the resources necessary to equip students with alternatives to drug and alcohol activities. Jennifer has been with COCA for two years and says, “I learned a lot more about addiction as a brain disease. I have friends who are in recovery now and am learning about what that is like. When the topic of drugs and alcohol comes up at the dinner table I am the one who says, “They are not bad people, they are sick”. Jennifer adds that when someone is in active addiction and gets into recovery you can see the big difference. You can see that they are well. It brings a new life to them and their family.
