In this episode of Thinking Out Loud, Cameron McAllister and Nathan Rittenhouse perform an intellectual autopsy of the New Atheist movement, reflecting on its cultural rise and current irrelevance. They unpack why arguments from figures like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris no longer resonate—especially in light of Christianity's enduring philosophical and moral foundations. With references to current debates, including a dismantling of Lawrence Krauss's secular claims, this episode provides Christians with a robust understanding of how to engage secular critiques with grace and intellectual rigor. Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the famed Muslim-turned-atheist and critic of religion along with her New Atheist cohort, shocked the world when she came out as a Christian in 2023. The partial story of her conversion from the UnHerd article she penned received backlash from non-Christian and Christian commentators alike. Recently, she sat down with agnostic Alex O'Connor to set the record straight. In this episode of All Rise, former Muslim, Abdu Murray, and former atheist, Derek Caldwell, react to Ayaan's more complete self-disclosure. Quote from the featured video: “
Last week Bari traveled to Austin, Texas, to host a debate on a simple little topic: religion and whether we need more of it. There's a line from Proverbs that has guided believers for at least the past 2,000 or so years. It goes like this: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” But for most of our lives, this message has been turned on its head. We can't entirely blame the so-called New Atheists, who dominated the American intellectual scene in the first part of this century, for the death of God—for that, we'd need to go back to Nietzsche or Darwin or the Enlightenment. But the point is that for people of Bari's generation and cohort, to be an educated, sophisticated, respectable person was to be an atheist. Or at the very least, an agnostic. The percentage of Americans who identify as Christian fell from 90 percent in 1972 to 64 percent in 2022, while the religiously unaffiliated (the so-called “nones”) rose from 5 percent to 30 percent in the same period, according to Pew Research. The shift toward secularism has been even more pronounced across the Atlantic. Among Europeans ages 16 to 29, 70 percent say they never attend religious services. But after years of decline, this trend may be starting to reverse. A massive new Pew survey found that the share of Americans identifying as Christian has, after many years of decline, finally started to rise again. And the share of Americans identifying with other religions is actually increasing. So are we better off with or without God? The other night in Austin Bari sat down with Ross Douthat, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Michael Shermer, and Adam Carolla. They came together to debate the following resolution: Does the West need a religious revival? Ross and Ayaan argued yes. Ross is a New York Times opinion columnist. His most recent book is Believe: Why Everyone Should Be Religious. Ayaan is an activist and best-selling author of many books including Prey: Immigration, Islam, and the Erosion of Women's Rights. On the other side, Michael Shermer and Adam Carolla argued no, we do not need a religious revival. Michael is the founding publisher of Skeptic magazine and the host of The Michael Shermer Show. He, too, is the author of multiple New York Times bestsellers on science, psychology, and faith. Adam Carolla is a comedian, actor, radio personality, TV host, and best-selling author. He currently hosts The Adam Carolla Show. If you liked what you heard from Honestly, the best way to support us is to go to TheFP.com and become a Free Press subscriber today. The once popular New Atheist movement seems to have lost its momentum. Several atheists have found a new interest in "cultural Christianity", and some are even turning to God. What happened to Atheism, and why do some find God an Christianity more attractive? The seminar is linked to Williams recent book Behold the Man. Peter S. Williams is a philosopher, with special interest for the atheist movement. He lives in the UK and is teaching at NLA Univesity College. Opptaket er fra Veritaskonferansen 2024. He is a cultural and evolutionary psychologist who studies what people believe about the world. He is curious about a lot things that fall under the cultural/evolutionary psychology umbrella, but he is especially interested in atheists. What do atheists teach us about belief, morality, and what it means to be human? He is the author of Disbelief: The Origins of Atheism in a Religious Species. In this episode, we focus on Disbelief. We talk about the idea of religion and atheism as evolutionary puzzles. We discuss popular misconceptions about religion coming from Marx, Richard Dawkins, and the New Atheists. We talk about different approaches to religion, including the cognitive science of religion, behavioral genetics, and cultural evolution. We discuss what makes religions culturally successful, and the relationship between Big Gods and prosociality. We then talk about atheism, how many atheists are there, different pathways toward atheism, whether atheism is natural, and whether atheists are moral and trustworthy. Finally, we discuss the future of religion and atheism. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. In this episode of Project Liberal, co-hosts Joshua Eakle and Shawn Huckabay sit down with Armin Navabi, founder of Atheist Republic and an outspoken advocate for secularism, religious freedom, and liberalism. Together, they explore Armin's fascinating personal journey from his upbringing in Iran to becoming one of the world's most prominent atheist activists. Along the way, the conversation unpacks the intersection of secularism and liberalism, the evolution of the New Atheist movement, and the challenges of defending liberal values in a polarized world. Topics Discussed: Armin's personal journey to secularism and his efforts to build Atheist Republic The New Atheist movement's evolution and its relationship with liberalism How secularism fosters freedom and challenges authoritarian systems The role of skepticism and humanism in shaping liberalism Liberalism as an adaptive, antifragile system in the face of populist challenges The importance of defending liberalism globally, from Europe to Iran The interplay of religion, culture, and liberal values in shaping society Armin Navabi shares powerful insights on the resilience of liberalism, the necessity of skepticism, and the universal desire for freedom. This episode offers a thought-provoking discussion on the forces shaping modern society and why liberalism remains a vital framework for progress. In this episode, I sat down with Steve Shives to talk about how we both went from New Atheism's golden age to something a little more… let's say, nuanced. We talk about why the New Atheist movement felt like home at first and why it didn't go deep enough when it came to actual social change. Steve doesn't hold back on what he thinks about some of the big names in the atheist world and how his focus has shifted over time—from taking down religious beliefs to taking on bigger social issues. We also discuss what it was like navigating all the divides within the skeptic and atheist communities, why breaking away from that world opened up new perspectives for us, and how we both ended up in the realm of leftist politics and social justice. Whether you've followed the atheist movement for years or just want to hear about evolving perspectives, there's a lot for you here. Decades ago, I escaped the Islamic world and came to the West. Many don't know how good the West is, or how fragile. I fight for the restoration of what made the West great.' – Ayaan Hirsi Ali Ever since writer and activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali publicly disavowed Islam, controversy has followed her every step. For many years the Somali-born former Muslim was a fierce critic of religion – particularly Islam – and became famous worldwide after publishing her controversial bestselling autobiography 'Infidel'. In the first decade of this century she was a pioneer of the New Atheist movement alongside the so-called ‘Four Horsemen': Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens and Daniel Dennett. And then late last year Ali stunned many of her own supporters and allies when she wrote an article ‘Why I am now a Christian,' in which she announced her conversion to Christianity and argued that the Christian belief system — not atheism — is the only means to preserve Western values. Many atheists felt that she had betrayed her life's work and many Christians felt she had politicised their religion. In September 2024 Ali came to the Intelligence Squared stage where, in conversation with Editor-in-Chief of UnHerd Freddie Sayers, she discussed her complicated history — from escaping an arranged marriage in her early 20s to becoming a Dutch MP aged 33 and going into hiding when death threats were made against her for alleged apostasy. And she explained her conviction that Christian values are the best hope for preserving Western society. … Subscribe to our newsletter here to hear about our latest events, discounts and much more. https://www.intelligencesquared.com/newsletter-signup/ Learn more about your ad choices. Joe Rogan, once a vocal evangelist of New Atheist talking points on religion, recently expressed how he yearns for the "just and righteous" Kingdom of God and believes the world "needs Jesus...for real." That's quite a change for Rogan, but his journey is emblematic of a broader shift in attitudes towards religion. In this episode, I'll explain why this cultural shift is happening, and we'll engage with the work of Charles Taylor, Jonathan Haidt, Paul Tillich, and others to help us better understand what religion actually is. Show Notes:Ryan and Brian invite Justin Brierly, a seasoned journalist and the host of the popular podcast 'Unbelievable,' to discuss the evolving narrative of faith in contemporary society. The conversation begins with Brierly reflecting on his journey, which began in 2005, as he sought to create a platform for meaningful discussions between Christians and atheists. Through his extensive experience, Brierly has not only engaged with prominent thinkers but also witnessed a significant cultural shift regarding faith. He shares insights into how the New Atheist movement, which once dominated intellectual discourse, is waning, making way for a renewed interest in spiritual matters. This shift is not merely anecdotal; Brierly cites growing numbers of individuals who are reconsidering their stance on faith, spurred by existential questions that plague modern life.Central to Brierly's message is his book, 'The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God,' where he argues that there is a noticeable resurgence in belief among younger generations. He discusses his conversations with influential figures like Douglas Murray, who acknowledges the significant cultural contributions of Christianity, and Tom Holland, who articulates a profound respect for the Christian narrative. Brierly suggests that these dialogues indicate a broader societal trend wherein the values instilled by Christianity are being recognized, even by those who do not identify as believers. He contends that this recognition paves the way for a more nuanced understanding of faith, encouraging listeners to consider the implications of such transformations in their own lives. As the podcast progresses, Brierly offers practical advice for churches seeking to engage with this new wave of meaning-seekers. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining the unique aspects of Christianity that set it apart from other ideologies, advocating for an approach that embraces the supernatural elements of faith. By doing so, churches can attract those who yearn for authenticity and depth in their spiritual journeys. Brierly also highlights the power of storytelling in conveying the richness of the Christian experience, suggesting that narratives of faith can resonate deeply with individuals searching for purpose. The conversation culminates with Brierly's insights on fostering respectful and ongoing dialogues with those who may disagree, underscoring the need for empathy and kindness in an increasingly polarized world.Takeaways: The podcast emphasizes the importance of having respectful, ongoing conversations with those who hold different beliefs. Justin Brierly discusses how he transitioned from a radio show to a successful podcast format. The changing cultural landscape has led to a resurgence of interest in Christian faith and spirituality. Brierly suggests that the church should embrace its unique and unusual aspects to attract seekers. The episode highlights the significance of storytelling in conveying the Christian message effectively. Brierly argues that modern apologists should focus on existential questions rather than just traditional debates.
Questions Covered: 01:42 – What does a day-in-the-life of Jimmy Akin look like? I know so many of us are in awe of your depth and breadth of knowledge. It would be interesting to see how you structure your day with learning etc. 06:40 – I have a few questions that I have had on my mind for some time now. It is said that Latin is especially efficacious for prayer and exorcisms because it is the official language of the church. My question is this, for an Eastern Rite Catholic, who would be under the authority of their church's head (although the Pope's authority is, of course, universal and preeminent) and have their own Codes of Canon Law, would the native language of that church be more efficacious or similar in efficacy to prayers in Latin? Or would this only apply to the ancient languages? E.g. Latin, Greek, Aramaic, Coptic, Hebrew, and possibly Church Slavonic and Arabic. 14:22 – What’s your thoughts about whether animals and our pets can be in heaven with us or not? 18:55 – Does the church condone organ donation? 20:28 – Also should we vote for a candidate who is for abortion, when there is no one who is prolife. Should we vote for the lesser of two evils? 21:51 – I have full confidence that you are knowledgeable about the “identity” issue. What would you offer in scripture and the catechism to someone who identified as a furry? 28:38 – Given the tragic shortage of priests, what would you recommend to someone seeking a spiritual director who is having a hard time finding one? 32:08 – I'd like your advice on what to tell my 9-year-old about Blessed Imelda Lambertini (the young girl who reportedly died of joy upon receiving the Eucharist). After hearing about Blessed Imelda my 9-year-old is scared that the Eucharist will kill her too. And for my own curiosity, do you know if this is a documented account or more of a pious legend? Thanks! 37:39 – The strongest challenge I ever heard from a Protestant about the Assumption is, “How can the Catholic Church dogmatically declare that the Assumption was ‘believed at all times by the Church’, when there is literally no evidence anywhere in the Bible, Church Father writings or, apocryphal writings of the first Century?” 43:05 – What separates the “New Atheists” from the old Atheists? 45:26 – If there are many other planets with life, then how would they be saved? Did Christ death and resurrection count for them also and if so, how would they know. Or did God save each planet with aliens differently? 48:14 – What are some of the best ways to practice becoming as humble as possible, like Our Lady? 50:13 – Is it possible for your guardian angel to not like you or something about you? For example, maybe your guardian angel doesn't like the same kind of music you listen to. I wonder if a guardian angel ever feels like they preferred getting someone else to guide. 52:38 – Who would win in a fight, the Incredible Hulk or felony tax evasion? Asking for a friend ️ 53:43 – Why was it necessary for the Church to make the immaculate conception and assumption into dogmas (vs leaving them as non-mandatory for belief teachings)? …

I think I got the original post slightly off. I was critiquing Sam Kriss' claim that the best traditions come from “just doing stuff”, without trying to tie things back to anything in the past. The counterexample I was thinking of was all the 2010s New Atheist attempts to reinvent “church, but secular”. These were well-intentioned. Christians get lots of benefits from going to church, like a good community. These benefits don't seem obviously dependent on the religious nature. So instead of tying your weekly meeting back to what Jesus and St. Peter and so on said two thousand years ago, why not “just do stuff” and have a secular weekly meeting? Most of these attempts fell apart. One of them, the Sunday Assembly, clings to existence but doesn't seem too successful. People with ancient traditions 1, people who just do stuff 0. But after thinking about it more, maybe this isn't what Sam means. https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/clarification-on-fake-tradition-is

Science and religion can often seem at loggerheads. But does it have to be that way? Dr. Francis Collins, one of the world's leading scientists, doesn't think so. As an internationally renowned geneticist, a recent past director of the US National Institutes of Health (where he helped guide the U.S. response to COVID), and an avowed Christian, he's a leading voice for how and why belief in God can be rational, and for a greater openness to science among Evangelical Christians. In a special live interview, Dave talks with Francis about his journey from skeptic to believer, why he thinks science and religion aren't incompatible, what New Atheists like Richard Dawkins and Steven Pinker get wrong in their battles against religion, and the ways in which religion can help (e.g. reducing suffering) or hinder (e.g. resistance to COVID vaccines) people's health. For much of human history, religion and science coexisted and even learned from one another. Join Dave to explore how that can still be true. Francis Collins is the founder of BioLogos, which is dedicated to showing how science and faith can work hand in hand. He is also the author of the New York Times bestseller The Language of God.

Does Christianity lack logic, reason, and evidence? Worse, is it “the cancer of humanity”? Is the Bible “just fairy stories and ancient scribblings”? Is the God of the Bible a moral monster? Are Christians hypocrites who brainwash their children? Are they just driven by fear of punishment? Are creationists science deniers who “tell lies for Jesus”? These, and many more, are criticisms of Christianity and biblical creation that we hear regularly. If even half of these claims were true, Christianity would be a wretched religion indeed! But they're not true! In fact, many of these criticisms don’t even withstand low-level scrutiny, never much less serious appraisal! The Four Horsemen of the New Atheists: Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett, have faded from the cultural spotlight they once attracted. The New Atheists are now the Old Atheists. In fact, only two of the four are still alive. The questions they once raised still linger faintly but cultural conversations have shifted dramatically. Instead of asking, "Does God exist?" there are now an array of books and personalities asking and answering questions of sex, gender, and race, to name but a few. We have new questions and new influencers that now dominate the conversation in the academy and households. Yet, as it turns out, the Old Atheists are not as irrelevant as one might think. On the AC podcast this week Andy, Steve, and Wes discuss how this current cultural moment is, in part, a product of their making and what we can learn from it moving forward.
Episode Notes Over his almost two decades as host of the UK-based radio program and podcast Unbelievable?, Justin Brierly facilitated countless thoughtful conversations about faith and unbelief between some of the world's foremost atheists and Christian apologists. In his book The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God and podcast by the same name, Justin explores what led to the popularity of the so-called New Atheists in the early 2000s as well as the internal conflicts that led to the movement's implosion. He joined Dr. Keith Plummer to discuss that and why secular thinkers such as Jordan Peterson, Peter Boghosian, Louise Perry, and Tom Holland, to name a few, are finding it increasingly difficult to ignore the Christian story's relevance to questions of science, history, culture, and our search for meaning.

The New Atheists used science as their trump card against religion. But what if we've been sold a false story about 'science vs faith'? Justin speaks to scientists, historians and thinkers about modern myths, the conflict thesis and the Christians who launched the scientific revolution. Along the way we hear from Peter Atkins, David Hutchings, John Lennox, Tim O'Neill, Sarah Irving-Stonebraker and Jennifer Wiseman. Justin also hears the surprising story of how tech pioneer Ros Picard came to faith. Atheist Richard Dawkins has said he doesn't believe one word of the Christian faith, but he now considers himself a “cultural Christian” and wants to defend the Christian values of his country against the influence of Islam and immigrants. Does this represent an alignment between the New Atheists and Christian Nationalists? Curtis Chang shares about “The After Party”—the new curriculum he's developed with David French and Russel Moore to help Christians focus on hope and humility rather than partisanship.
The death of the Bible has been predicted many times, yet today it remains the bestselling book in the world as a new generation of meaning seekers turn back towards its ancient wisdom. Justin examines how thinkers such as Jordan Peterson, Marilynne Robinson and Jonathan Haidt have been rehabilitating the Bible and hears from scholars such as Tim Mackie, NT Wright and Matthew Lynch on why the Bible continues to resonate, even as the New Atheists critique its violent 'conquest' passages. A little less than two decades ago, you might walk past a bookstore and see The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins featured among the bestsellers. The mid to late 2000's were the heyday for the New Atheists, a small cohort of scientists and philosophers who were convinced religion was both untrue and a bad influence in the world. At the time, it was easy to see the rise of the New Atheists as the latest peak of secularism, a sign that public belief in religion was long gone, and there was no going back.Where we sit now in 2024, we can see that the New Atheist movement fell apart due to internal disagreement and concern about its own influence on the world. According to our guest Justin Brierley, public opinions towards religion are complex and mixed, not nearly as negative as the New Atheist movement would have anticipated. In fact, there are many signs that a Christian renewal is underway. From notable conversions of high-profile individuals to the rise of secular thinkers defending Christianity to the increasing skepticism that science and atheist worldviews can answer our most important questions, Justin observes that the Christian story is far from dead.Justin Brierley is a writer, speaker, and podcaster committed to building dialogue between Christians and non-Christians. His first book was titled Unbelievable? Why, after ten years of talking with atheists, I'm still a Christian and in September 2023 he published his second book, The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God. Zach interviews Justin in this episode, and the conversation ends with several fascinating questions: will there be a renewal of Christianity and belief in God? If so, are the churches prepared for it? How can the Christian world transcend tribalism and culture wars to welcome a new batch of seekers?

Tackling well-known skeptics Hawking, Dawkins, Dennett, Hitchens, and Onfray, he pinpoints fallacies in the New Atheists' approach, arguing that their irrational, unscientific methodology is no better than the unreasoned claims offered by religious dogmatists.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Friends, the New Atheism movement rose quickly in the early 2000s, led by vicious critics of religion such as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens. In the second part of their discussion based on the book Coming to Faith Through Dawkins, theologian Alister McGrath and YouTuber Alex O'Connor discuss where we may be heading in regards to religion and atheism. Faith or Atheism: what's next? Recorded on 9/11, 22 years after the tragic events at New York's World Trade Centre, which in many ways provided a catalyst for the New Atheist movement, they discuss why New Atheism has lost its appeal, what some of the new concerns and questions are and whether anything will replace it. Alister shares the evidence that compelled him to move from atheism to Christianity and Alex contemplates what it might take to convince him that God exists. Unbelievable? delves back into history and asks Did new atheism fail? with one the world's best-known theologians Alister McGrath debating Oxford-educated philosopher and wildly successful YouTuber Alex O'Connor. Prompted by a new book Coming to Faith Through Dawkins which published on 29th August 2023, the book edited by Denis Alexander and Alister McGrath gathered other intelligent minds from around the world Australia, S. Africa, Egypt, USA, and the UK to share their startling commonality: Richard Dawkins and his fellow New Atheists were instrumental in their conversions to Christianity. Despite a wide range of backgrounds and cultures, all are united in the fact that they were first enthusiasts for the claims and writings of the New Atheists. But each became disillusioned by the arguments and conclusions of Dawkins, causing them to look deeper and with more objectivity at religious faith. The fallacies of Christianity Dawkins warns of simply don't exist. "This is a novel book: real-life stories of people who have actually come to faith, not in spite of but through Richard Dawkins. It must be his own worst nightmare!" --William Lane Craig" Alister McGrath is a former atheist who discovered Christianity while studying the natural sciences at Oxford University. He has held a number of senior appointments during his career, including Professor of Historical Theology at Oxford, before taking up the Andreas Idreos Professorship of Science and Religion at Oxford, from which he retired last year. He also served as President of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics. McGrath is one of the world's best-known theologians and apologists, and is the author of the internationally acclaimed textbook Christian Theology: An Introduction, which has been translated into twenty languages. With his wife, he wrote a critique of Richard Dawkins's God Delusion which became an international bestseller. Later this year, he will publish a new textbook entitled Christian Apologetics: An Introduction. McGrath has three earned doctorates from Oxford University, in the natural sciences, theology, and intellectual history.
