She soon found herself baking in the early mornings as well as late at night after she put in her regular hours as a mother and for work. The headline from CNN Health form June 28, 2023 reads, "HRT use by younger women linked to dementia, study says". That is FRIGHTENING to any patient using hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms. Does HT cause dementia? Or is HT a "easy suspect"? The question of HT and cognitive function has been a subject of controversy for many years. In this episode we will summarize the NAMS position statement on HT for cognitive issues (2022) as well as summarize this new June 2023 publication from BMJ causing quite a stir among menopauses' medical experts. PLUS, we will provide a likely reason, which is the proverbial "elephant in the room", for this new study's conclusions.
Does the combination birth control pill cause depression? This has been a controversial subject for over 2 decades. While some observational studies have described a possible association, randomized clinical trials have shown little to no connection. On June 12, 2023, a new population-based cohort study from the UK sought to evaluate this possible association. This resulted in some interesting claims! These results, just within 24 hours, have now made their way to major news outlets and social media circles. In this episode, we will summarize the key findings as well as the key limitations to this “hot-off the press" publication.

Kia ora,Welcome to Friday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz.Today we lead with news markets are brushing off signs of rising financial risk, preferring to accent the positives. They are aided by some generally hawkish central bank comments. But first in the US, their debt ceiling negotiations have come down to the wire with the traditional bipartisan resolution now very unlikely. The Democrats will have to do it on their own.Meanwhile, new US initial jobless claims rose last week to +306,000 in a surprise bounce. And the total number of people on these claims rose also, up to 2,535,000 which as also an unexpected rise. It doesn't really help however that the four week moving average is now at its lowest since the start of the pandemic. The August report by the Chicago Fed of the national activity index notes a slowing economic expansion even if it is still expanding well above average. The Kansas City Fed factory survey backs that up, reporting a good but slowing expansion. But cost and price rises remained very high, they said. These reports reinforce the latest PMI reports for the US factory sector - fast expansion but just not as fast in September as in August. Except for costs and prices which were reported as rising faster. In the services sector, the overall picture is very similar. Costs are a problem there too, but optimism is rising faster.New June data out from the US Fed shows that American household net worth hit a record high of US$ 142 tln, up +20% in a year, driven by surging home values. (Sound familiar?) This is the second consecutive quarter their net worth gains have exceeded +US$20 tln in a quarter. Thursday's bond payment was made, but there are other larger tests in coming weeks. There were flash PMIs reported in the EU as well where there was slower growth as bottlenecks curb activity and their input price gauge hit a 21-year high.In China, it looks like the Evergrande crisis hasn't passed after all. There are reports that Beijing has decided to let the company fail, and it is racing to prepare all its national and local agencies to brace themselves "for the possible storm" and wait to handle the aftermath after a failure, not prevent it from happening.China is also facing sharp but regional output cutbacks amid a shortage of electricity supply as authorities respond to Beijing directions to achieve targets for lower overall energy use. They need to act now so that they aren't embarrassed in the coming winter surge.Taiwan's central bank reviewed its monetary policy position and left all its settings unchanged. The country is in a period of strong export-led growth.Turkey's central bank stunned markets overnight by cutting its key interest rate a full -1.0% to 18%, which immediately caused their currency to plunge to record low levels. And that will sharply raise inflation. It was a cut demanded by their President, who has fired the past three central bank governors for keeping interest rates higher than he wants. In England, their central bank left all its settings unchanged as expected as well, but two officials there called for an end to its QE program. This is despite the regulator downgrading its economic growth expectations. There was a September PMI report out for Australia too, and that reported a continuing contraction in both their manufacturing and services sectors, even if it was slightly less in September than August. The UST 10yr yield opens today up sharply at just under 1.40% and +9 bps higher from this time yesterday. The price of gold will start today sharply lower again, down -US$24 at US$1752/oz.But oil prices have moved higher again overnight and compared to yesterday's levels are up +$1 to just over US$73/bbl in the US, while the international Brent price is even higher at just under US$76.50/bbl.The Kiwi dollar opens today at just on 70.8 USc and more than +½c firmer since this time yesterday. Against the Australian dollar we are little-changed at just over 96.9 AUc. Against the euro we are +40 bps firmer at 60.3 euro cents. That means our TWI-5 starts today at 74.1 and back at the top of the 72-74 range of the past eleven months. The bitcoin price has risen again today, and is up at US$44,860 and a +3.7% gain from this time yesterday. Volatility in the past 24 hours has been moderate at just under +/- 2.3%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. And get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin' Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space. This week, we begin by lamenting the fact that the Mets have gone from toast to burnt toast since our last episode. We also discuss how this could potentially be fixed moving forward and if it can be fixed at all. Next, we talk about the latest developments with the Trevor Bauer situation—new reporting from the Washington Post about an Ohio woman who filed a protective order against Bauer last year and a breakdown of the first two days of testimony in court. Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what's making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise. You can listen or subscribe to all of our wonderful Amazin' Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show. It really helps! Kia ora and welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect New Zealand. I'm Rebecca Caroe and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz. This podcast is supported by Hatch. Self-directed investors should have the world at their fingertips. Kiwi Wealth’s digital investing platform Hatch provides safe, easy and affordable access to the US share markets. Investors can choose from the world’s most recognisable companies like Apple and Microsoft, and popular exchange-traded funds like the Vanguard Total Market ETF, as well as more niche, thematic funds like cannabis or disruptive technologies. Sign up and browse shares in under 2 minutes, visit hatchinvest.nz for more info. Today this podcast leads with news markets are in full retreat following the latest set of US tariffs. But first, this week eyes will be on central banks, especially those in our region. Markets are expecting policy makers in New Zealand, India, the Philippines to each cut rates, while in Australia markets expect them to hold after back-to-back cuts. All these moves are in either response or in preparation for faltering growth. All this comes after US jobs growth came in at a modest 164,000, almost exactly as expected. But there was a sharp sting in this data; June's 224,000 gain was revised down to 193,000, and May's data was revised lower too for a second time. The July result is the fifth lowest monthly increase in the past two years. Separately, the US announced another 10% tariff on 300 billion dollars’ worth of goods sourced from China. The US is also about to tariff European aircraft. Wall Street wasn't impressed, especially with the US tariff moves. It was down for a weekly drop of three point three percent. Bond yields keep on dropping too as risk aversion builds quickly over the trade policy misstep. European markets fell even more. Not only are they facing an unreliable US economy, they have their own slowdown to worry about and the fear of Brexit as well. Most markets were down more than three percent on Friday. Yields fell sharply there too. In Asia, most markets shed two and a half percent in the week, much of it on Friday. For trillion dollar markets, these are huge losses in 'value'. China is raising the stakes, and the risks, by announcing it will retaliate again against the new US tariffs. And they said they now "won't give an inch" after what they see is the latest insult from the US negotiation style. One of the great ironies of this trade war is that since the US started it, the trade deficit the US runs with China has gotten progressively worse. New June data is recording a record deficit with China. US exports are falling much faster than US imports. While all this is going on, Japan and South Korea are in their own trade tussle, rooted in deep cultural enmity. Now each has removed preferential status and that will roil trade between the two neighbours. It is a trade dispute that could get ugly fast. South Korea is launching a stimulus program to counter the expected impacts. Meanwhile the US is pressing Japan to agree a bilateral trade deal. The TPP will likely get in the way. But the big trade deal involves concessions by Japan on beef (which could hurt New Zealand), in return for concessions by the US on cars and components. Given that Japan has a 67 billion dollar annual trade surplus with the US, the pressure is on. [ADVERT] If you invest in the local bond market, we have a daily update of prices and yields. Right on the same page you can find sparkline charts giving you an easy view of how yields on specific issues are moving. You can find it at interest.co.nz/bonds-data/issues In Vancouver Canada, July housing sales have surged as prices there fell. Sales are up twenty four percent year-on-year and prices are down nine percent on the same basis. It's enough for the Canadian housing agency to declare that Vancouver housing is no longer highly vulnerable. In Australia, it is being reported that BNZ was caught up in a sanctions-breaking payment for Iranian oil. The exposure was in the BNZ London offices. In the end, no offence occurred but internal 'risk' was identified and defused. The UST 10yr yield is now at one point eight four percent, an eye-watering decline from this time last week of twenty-three basis points. Gold will open the week slightly lower at 1,440 US dollars an ounce, down $2 from Friday but up $25 for the week. US oil prices are staying low despite a small bounce on Friday. They are now just on 55.50 US dollars a barrel. The Brent benchmark is also lower at $61.50. The Kiwi dollar starts the week little changed from Friday but is a whole one cent lower than this time last week. It is now at 65.4 US cents. On the cross rates we are firmer at over 96.2 Australian cents. Against the euro we are down to 58.9 euro cents. That sets the trade weighted index back to just on 70.8 and nearly 100 basis points lower than this time last week, for the second week in a row. Just two weeks ago the trade weighted index was at 72.5, so that is a two and a half percent overall depreciation of the Kiwi dollar.
