Farmers who've had illegal hare coursers on their land are warning it's only a matter of time until someone is killed. Hare coursing involves betting on dogs chasing hares, and police say those taking part are often involved in criminal gangs and are using more and more extreme tactics.Xylella is a bacterial infection in plants spread by spittlebugs. It hasn't yet arrived in the UK but has had a serious impact on olive trees in the Mediterranean. Imported plants are being checked at the border to try to prevent the disease getting here, but preparations are also being made in case it does. We visit a secure lab to speak to some of the scientists involved. And a new study has found that after 4 years of applying sewage sludge to farm land, the amount of microplastics in the soil had risen by 1,450%. Researchers from the James Hutton Institute and Robert Gordon University looked at soil samples from an experimental field in North Lanarkshire. Presented by Anna Hill Produced by Heather Simons

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by Kristin Johnson, Dr Keith Amoss, and Paul Clark to talk about the enigmatic topic of hope. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you've got hope then you don't have fear, and if you lose hope then fear immediately comes in and fills that void. I'm a career coach so I work with a lot of people who have just lost their jobs. They may well be very good at their profession, but when they arrive on my doorstep they are hopeless. One of the big problems with that is they associate hopelessness with uselessness. It's really important to re-instill the idea that it's not all finished, you're just in a bad spot. Let's be hopeful, because many other people have managed in the past, there's no reason why you can't. Hope has always got that outcome that, potentially, you're wishing for the best, but it just might not happen. Depending on the degree of your faith – and there is a difference – faith would say (if it's strong enough) everything will be OK. Hope is powerful. Victor Frankel, a psychologist in the Auschwitz concentration camp wrote Man's Search For Meaning, and what he did was observed the prisoners, those that gave up perished and those that had something to live for and a hope that they would be released back into the outside world and do what it was that they wanted to really do again. That kept them alive. It's incredibly powerful, not wishy-washy at all. I train a girl with severe mental health issues and she loves coming to the gym and I can see it in her; she hopes to do an event next year, she hopes to raise money for charity, she's hoping she can do these things to push past her mental health barrier. BEST MOMENTS‘When you say “hope” you assume it's a down and out feeling – where you need to find hope – but, if you hone in on hope it's a good thing'. ‘It does take some action, hope is not just sitting there and waiting'. ‘On British TV shows hope isn't the main factor in the characters' journeys, they're the underdog and remain the underdog and we laugh at that. On US TV shows 9/10 the underdog wins, they thrive off hope. This doesn't happen for British people'. ‘I was going to say the only expert on hop is Bob, but that would be showing my age!' This week our guests are Alice Lemkes and Philippa Battye, who tell us about their cycling adventure to recreate the 1936 cycling and Hostelling holiday of Mary Harvie. As part of their 90th anniversary celebrations and in support of Scotland's Year of Stories 2022, Hostelling Scotland have teamed up with the Adventure Syndicate, a group of female adventurers and storytellers who promote mental and physical wellbeing through their outdoor endeavours, to recreate an epic 500-mile cycle and youth hostelling adventure. The original two-week, two wheeled holiday was carried out by 17-year-old hosteller Mary Harvie, from Shotts in North Lanarkshire, with her two older sisters, Ella and Jean, in 1936. This epic journey, that began in Glasgow and saw the women explore the North West Highlands, Skye, Highland Perthshire, and Stirlingshire, was documented in Mary's diary. Now, their route has been partly followed - and partly improvised on - in the 21st century by a trio of cyclists from The Adventure SYndicate, Lee Craigie, Alice Lemkes, and Phillipa Battye from the Adventure Syndicate set out from Glasgow Youth Hostel on their own seven-day, 500-mile, on and off-road cycle adventure, an appreciation of the Harvie sisters' incredible cycling trip. This episode is Accentricity's first audio research paper. In April this year, I was really excited to have an article published in a linguistics journal, telling people about some of the findings from my PhD research. But… not all people. Because although I did my best to write the article as clearly and simply as possible, it's only really accessible to other linguists. That's fine, of course – journal articles are for talking to other people in your field. But I think my findings might be interesting to people who aren't linguists, too. So I've made this podcast episode to accompany it. It contains the same findings as the journal article, but explained in a more accessible way, and with some voices and ideas other than mine included. I've left out some detail which might be interesting to other linguists. If you are a linguist and want this detail, you can find the article here, or you can find the pre-publication version here. If you are a linguist who is much too busy to read the article, then give your eyes a rest and enjoy having information delivered to your ears instead :) This is a new thing that I'm trying out, and I'd love to hear what you think. Whether it's Black Lives Matter, Marcus Rashford's crusade over school meals or the global campaign EndSARS drawing attention to police brutality in Nigeria online is steadily becoming the place where people are engaging with political and social issues. But does posting a black square or a hashtag really constitute activism? For our panel there's nothing worse than taking a selfie at a protest just to be seen there, or a commercial brand jumping on the band wagon of the cause du jour. As for so called influencers activism can be a double edged sword, support every cause and people don't take you seriously, fail to support something and people call you out for not caring. So, here it is: the first ever reading from my first ever novel! Where else would I read it for the first time?! It's such a privilege to have all you Salonistas along with me on this journey. I am interviewed by Kirsty Wark - lucky me! The novel has already been previewed in the Guardian, Observer & Financial Times. Here is what the Big Issue had to say in their look ahead to 2019: 'Maggie and Me introduced the world to a startlingly clear and honest working class voice, but for his debut novel Damian Barr has chosen to travel thousands of miles from the North Lanarkshire setting of his lauded memoir. You Will be Safe Here tells the stories of two families separated by a century, but symbolically and viscerally connected. The oppression of a South African family rounded into a concentration camp by English soldiers during the second Boer War is echoed in the modern-day story of Johannesburg teenager Willem, who is ‘not turning out right’ and is sent to a brutal training camp to have his too-soft corners sharpened up. The landscape and vernacular couldn’t be more different from Barr’s own childhood homestead, but the themes he understands so well, and writes about so simply and evocatively, remain: the cruel, isolating experience of being bullied by a knuckle-headed majority; the sweet relief in finding a sympathetic friend among the angry, contemptuous throng. Without melodrama or sentiment, Barr is proving himself a master of show-don’t-tell writing which packs a hefty emotional punch. He seems to do it just by listening, thinking, then letting the words flow. Extraordinary. (Jane Graham)' Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Clarity on Fire
Bust through any block with Ryan Mathie

Sometimes change happens super gradually, and sometimes in lightning strikes. Ryan’s was definitely the latter. Ten years ago, on a seemingly random walk through London, Ryan Mathie experienced a profound breakdown that became a huge breakthrough. Since then he’s been incredibly motivated to help other people see how much they’re getting in their own way (like he was, pre-breakthrough), and help them set themselves free. He really LOVES busting through blocks, so we challenged him to help our listeners bust through their oldest, crustiest problems. We picked submissions from six listeners for Ryan to tackle, and he totally delivered. We got into questions like: “I sabotage every job and relationship I enter into it. How can I get out of this vicious cycle?” “How can I stop feeling guilty for saying ‘no’ and having boundaries?” “How can I overcome the fear and perfectionism that keeps me from pursuing my creativity full-out?” “Should I say in my 22-year-long marriage? Or should I call it quits?” “How do I move past ‘just getting by’ when it comes to money and actually thrive?” We also got into what almost every submission we got had in common, and what’s often at the root of our most difficult blocks, regardless of what it may look like on the surface. After you’ve listened, come leave a comment to let us know how Ryan’s coaching resonated with you! FREE WORKSHOP ON JANUARY 28! Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

In the third of my series of interviews conducted in southern Scotland, it was an absolute delight to catch up with Kris Jozajtis, who teaches Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies in a secondary school in North Lanarkshire, having previously undertaken a PhD in religion and film at the University of Stirling. We learn why Kris, who grew up in West London in the 1960s to parents who were refugees from Poland, is considered an exotic creature in the part of Scotland where he now lives. Kris remembers watching England win the World Cup in 1966 and reveals why the Kennedy assassination, when he was 5 years old, had a particular impact. He reflects on how the 60s felt like a time of optimism and that it felt like things were going to get better for everyone, especially from the point of view of his immigrant parents. Kris talks about the freedom of growing up and his memory of travelling by himself on the tube to see a football match at the age of 11 and about how the Second World War was an unspoken shadow looming over their lives and which spurred his parents and grandparents to make life as pleasant as possible. Kris remembers Saturday morning pictures at the ABC Hammersmith and explains why cinema-going wasn’t an escapist endeavour. He talks about becoming something of a film buff, and the opportunity he had to watch groundbreaking French films, because of his father. Musically, Kris recalls being impressed by Roy Orbison’s ‘Oh, Pretty Woman’ and we learn how he once came close to seeing ‘the Big O’ on stage, but did once meet Ray Davies. Kris explains how it was an essay on spaghetti westerns that secured his passage into university as a mature student and how he has a fascination with films about America. He runs a film club with his schoolchildren, and we learn why his proudest moment is when he showed Chaplin’s ‘The Kid’. Kris also talks about why he shows ‘Pleasantville’ each year and the pleasure he gets from watching the kids’ reaction to it. We learn why Kris has a problem with the word ‘deserve’, why he stresses the importance of resilience, why adulthood is about accepting compromises and why he considers teaching to be a noble profession. In the final part of the interview, Kris explains why we need to take responsibility for our actions rather than blame somebody else and why sometimes we just have to say ‘I got it wrong’. Nostalgia worries Kris because it can seem more attractive than the painful present to which we cannot go back. We also learn why Kris considers himself to be both a looking back and a looking forward type of person. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and Kris Jozajtis and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.
