This week we're back in 1983! Kornflake shares a goofy 1983 commercial for Dial soap, while Kevin takes an absurdly quick look at the pop music of 1983. It was the year new wave conquered the Top 40, and we approved. (For more complete coverage of 1983 music, we refer you to recent episodes of White Rocket Entertainment and Modern Musicology. While the Flopcast covers Kajagoogoo, they take care of everything else.) We also stopped by Northeast Comic Con (aka Music Con) and saw members of the Monkees (Micky), the Runaways (Cherie), the Ramones (Richie), and the Stompers (Sal)! A Monkees cover band called Zilch was there too, as well as old friend of The Flopcast (and, as Flash Gordon, savior of the universe) Sam J. Jones! Plus: A concert report on Elvis Costello and the Imposters (along with Charlie Sexton) and Nick Lowe (along with his Mexican wrestling-masked backup band Los Straitjackets). And best of all, Happy Birthday to America's 1980s sweetheart, Phoebe Cates! Celebrate by watching Private School. It's not Phoebe's best movie, but it is Phoebe's 1983 movie. The Mental Suppository will return with brand new episodes on February 4th. Until then we wish to share a few favorite “leftovers” from our inaugural 2021 season.  We were fortunate enough to do three live shows during that season. Two of which were hosted over Zoom with the third one presented live at Northeast Comic Con and Collectibles Winter Show on Thanksgiving Weekend.  One of the things we wanted to do when developing the Mental Suppository as an ongoing podcast was to involve short table reads during certain episodes. The reads would consist of the hosts and occasional guests taking part and reading a script from an unproduced film or television show. Sometimes reimagining a script in the case of the movie THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARIi or the 1975 children's show GHOSTBUSTERS produced by Filmation. We hope to continue this tradition into the coming new year. But for now, sit back and listen to a few we did over the course of the previous year.

This is the last of the four podcasts I taped last November at the NorthEast Comic Con and Collectibles Extravaganza, which happens twice a year out in Boxborough, Massachusetts. Philo has had a long and varied career, and we get into his resume straight away in the interview and drill down from there. You've seen his animation work on Disney's The Little Mermaid, The Smurfs, Super Friends, and more. You may even have heard his voice if you're a fan of early animated video games, but I will make you listen to find out more about that. Barnhart comes from a family of animators – mother Phyllis was an animator and cel painter, and Philo used to go with his dad Dale when he worked as a background artist for Disney. Which is how he was nearly the voice of Winnie the Pooh. We are also both huge Yellow Submarine fans, which I enjoyed exploring with him. He is a delightful and colorful conversationalist. You can find out more about his work at www.silverphoenix.net, or search for him on Facebook. And you can find out more about Northeast Comic Con's guests and schedule at NEComicCons.com, or search for them on Facebook and Twitter. This week's feature track is “Permanent Crush” from Matt York's upcoming album, Bruisable Heart. York is an exceptional songwriter and performer, which you already know if you heard him on EP49 of the podcast and checked out his music. I've had the pleasure of playing with Mr. York on a few occasions, and I can tell you, he is a prolific and musically restless fellow. I've heard a couple of different versions of this song and some of the others he's working on, and you're in for a treat when the final album drops early this summer. Look for news about that and York's other work at mattyorkmusic.com and on Facebook and Twitter.

This is an inadvertently Nashville-themed edition, as featured interview subject, comics artist/creator and musician Guy Gilchrist, and the musician behind this week's featured track, Ted Drozdowski, ply their trades in Music City. And for the second week in a row, the featured guest has a Jim Henson connection. A bit from his bio – Gilchrist created the Muppets comic strip and worked on Fraggle Rock and The Muppet Babies. But he also took over the comic strip Nancy for a number of years and worked on cartoons from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to The Pink Panther. And if that weren't enough, he's also an accomplished singer/songwriter. Which is why I brought my guitar, in case I could convince him to play a tune or two. Which he does just before the conversation begins, and then later, in separate segment, at his booth at the NorthEast Comic Con and Collectibles Extravaganza. I was fortunate to sit down with Guy in front of a live audience at the Con, and Gilchrist was also one of the first people I met there. We talked at his booth where he was doing custom drawings for fans. He looked down at my laminate and said, “You're underdressed.” I handed him the laminate, and he drew Kermit in a Red Sox cap. The Sox are his favorite team, and since they had just won the World Series, Gilchrist was in a great mood. It makes sense he would appreciate such a pastoral game. It became clear to me as we spoke how much he treasures gentleness and how much he sincerely wants to help make the world a more loving place. Just don't mention zombies to him. You can hear for yourself why. He is passionate and irrepressible. I directed this interview the way a bumper directs a pinball. “That's why they have a panel with just me,” he says at one point. “Everybody gets pissed off.” Later on in the Con, I went back to Guy's table to try to get him to sing one of his own songs. I didn't get that, but I did get him singing “Poor Jenny,” originated by the Everly Brothers, which you'll hear in the short second segment. You can find out more about him at www.aguygilchristproduction.com, or search for him on Facebook and Twitter. And you can visit Guy at the NorthEast Comic Con this weekend, March 15-17, in Boxboro, Massachusetts. And thanks as well to Gary Sohmers for allowing me to tape my first live episodes at the Con. I've got one more, with artist and animator Philo Barnhart, coming up in the next few weeks. This week's featured track is "Still Among the Living,” from Ted Drozdowski's new album, Coyote Motel. It's an evolutionary step forward from what Drozdowski has been doing with his band, Scissormen. It's more psychedelic, more textured, and at times, more emotional. I don't want to say too much about this, because Ted is the guest on next week's episode and you'll get to hear the story behind this track directly from him. I will say the reasons I chose this track, which opens the album, are that I love the main lyrical conceit, “I'm here, so you're still among the living,” he sings, and because it features Ted's epic guitar playing. It's out It's out now, and you can find it on CDBaby, so pick it up!

First up Ken chatted with Brendon about Psycho Beach Party, Three's Company, being a PA on Dave's World, growing up in LA, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, what he watches now, The Buffy Comic Book series, why Buffy and Xander never got together, the great dialog of Joss Whedon, Criminal Minds, hugging, dancing, and how Spike and Xander should star in a remake of "The Ropers". Next up Ken chats with Mark Goddard about how he got to Hollywood, why you should never say you can ride a horse when you can't, The Rifleman, Lost in Space, how to talk your way onto a movie lot, what to do when robots catch fire, and being recognized without being recognized.

Your Flopcast hosts have not been spotted together at many conventions in 2016, but it happened at Northeast Comic Con! (Just barely -- Kornflake was feeling under the weather, but still managed to arrive fashionably late. 'Twas a holiday miracle.) Wandering around the convention, we ran into a bunch of friends (including Tiki Zombie's Mike Gordon, TV Guidance Counselor's Ken Reid, and the Rubber Chicken Comics guys), a bunch of great costumes (including a "Stranger Things" costume that was just brilliant), and a bunch of people in Devo energy domes, because yikes, two members of Devo were there! (We love Devo... and as you may have noticed recently, they were right about "De-Evolution" after all. So show some respect, you spuds.) We also stayed for the Saturday night concert, with performers including Tsunami of Sound (with special guest Billy West!), The Lights Out (Kornflake's new favorite rock band), and The Fantastic Plastics (a Devo-inspired sci-fi pop duo with a theremin... so yeah, we sort of fell in love with them). We also have some recent podcasts to plug, from our friends at Earth Station One, Pop Culture Cosmos, and Grant's Advent Calendar. And thanks to National Whatever Day, we're thinking about "9 to 5." (Not the song, not the movie, but the sitcom. We try to make everything about 80s sitcoms. Hey, remember when Devo appeared on "Square Pegs"? We sure do.)

It's Thanksgiving week, and we're celebrating with cranberries, espresso, and Robbie Rist (you know, just like the Pilgrims). We also catch up on silly events of the last few weeks, including a weird trip to Rockport for a Joan Osborne concert, our friend Mous E's 25-hour charity gaming marathon (including Operation!), and Kevin's attempt at an even dumber Halloween costume than last year's debacle. (They said it couldn't be done. Challenge accepted.) And we're looking forward to next week's David Bowie tribute concert from Niki Luparelli and the Gold Diggers (with burlesque from the Lipstick Criminals), and next month's Northeast Comic Con (featuring Dean Cain, Billy West, members of Devo, TV Guidance Counselor's Ken Reid, The Lights Out, and perhaps even a Tiki Zombie). So hey, Happy Thanksgiving, true believers. We'll never be as festive as a giant Underdog balloon, but we're trying.

Kevin and Kornflake are back from Northeast Comic Con, where they found Muppet choirs, Rubber Chicken Comics, the Lost in Space chariot, and some of our favorite costumers (including Cosplay Dad, RW Martin as Indiana Jones, and Brandon the Shapeshifter as Thundarr the Barbarian). And the convention's Saturday night concert featured Tsunami of Sound, The Lights Out, Draco and the Malfoys, Loose Salute, Sam Mulligan, a Walton (Jon Walmsley), a Blackheart (Ricky Byrd), and yes, a Monkee (Micky Dolenz)! 'Twas a long show; we're still sleepy. Also from Northeast Comic Con, we have a Flopcast interview with the original Captain America (from way back in 1979), Reb Brown! (Did we mostly ask about Reb's appearance on The Facts of Life? What do you think?) Plus: The Mayor of Chickentown makes her Earth Station One podcast debut, we unveil our new Flopcast convention badge ribbons, and Kornflake is still obsessed with popsicles.

We're kicking off the new year with one more convention report from the old year! Northeast Comic Con featured the stars of A Christmas Story; a round of Press Your Luck (No Whammies!) with Big Bucks Entertainment; legendary comic book artist George Pérez; TV Guidance Counselor with Ken Reid, Claudia Wells, John Wesley Shipp, and Andrew WK; and the 50th anniversary of Lost in Space. Speaking of which, we have a special Flopcast interview with one of the stars of Lost in Space, Marta Kristen! Marta discusses not only her time aboard the Jupiter 2 as Judy Robinson, but also her role as Lorelei the mermaid in Beach Blanket Bingo, her critically acclaimed theatrical work, and her current projects. (Listen carefully for a cameo from Marta's Lost in Space co-star Mark Goddard! And you might even hear the Robot in the background, screaming about danger, as usual.) Also: Soupy Sales would have been 90 this week. Why not celebrate by hitting yourself in the face with a pie?

We're halfway through our court-ordered ten-episode celebration of the 80s, which means it's time to talk about 1985. Kornflake has a song by Passion Pit (not from 1985, but still thematically appropriate... well played, Kornflake). Meanwhile Kevin selects the classic Pat Benatar-meets-Supergirl film The Legend of Billie Jean, because fair's fair. Then we move on to some holiday talk -- Kevin's Halloween costume was the stupidest thing anyone has ever seen, and we have the Turkey Stark business cards to prove it. We also thought Thanksgiving week would be the perfect time to tell the world about "turxting" -- a bold new breakthrough in turkey-themed communications technology. (You might even hear us send and receive turxt messages from some friends of the Flopcast during the show! Try to contain your excitement.) And we look forward to our final convention of the year, the Northeast Comic Con! (If Judy Robinson from Lost in Space will be there, then we'll be there. This is how we plan our lives.) Hey, if you found this week's show to be a little weird, please let us know. Send us a turxt.

Kornflake dreams of a Flopcast road trip to Wayne, Nebraska... possibly because they have a GIANT ANNUAL CHICKEN FESTIVAL!!! Meanwhile Kevin has been creeping around the rock clubs of Boston again, and reports on recent shows by Telelectrix (they have a keyboard fort), Party Bois (they like to drink, they like to party), Petty Morals (aka Go Bang), CJ Ramone (who brought along an Aquabat or two), Shonen Knife (they sing about cats and capybaras, so we love them), and (get ready to freak out) Men Without Hats. (We can pretend it's 1983 if we want to.) Kevin also dropped by Northeast Comic Con, and found pirates, rubber chickens, gargoyles, Adam West, our favorite TV Guidance Counselor, and a whole bunch of Shriners. Also: Kornflake reviews the new Pixar movie Inside Out, which may or may not be a shameless ripoff of Karate Kid Part 3.
