From the Publisher's Overview: On the Dogma of the Church: An Historical Overview of the Sources of Ecclesiology, the Holy Hieromartyr Hilarion (Troitsky) explores patristic resources from the early centuries of Christianity. He brings seminal works at the periphery of the consciousness of every Christian to the forefront as living witnesses to the unbroken tradition of the Church. St. Hilarion's staggeringly extensive familiarity with sources both patristic and modern, coupled with his own lucid thinking and profoundly Orthodox outlook, superbly equip him for his extensive analysis of the subject. It is this dogma that determines what the Church is and what distinguishes it from all that is not the Church. The Church is not a phenomenon of the natural earthly order: the mysterious depths of church life, in accordance with the unfailing promise of Christ the Savior, are always and invariably enveloped by the grace-filled power of the Holy Spirit. The full depth of this mystical life of the Church is not of course subject to logical definitions and scholarly research: it is given directly to him who participates in it, as Hilary of Poitiers expressed in the words: "This is the peculiar property of the Church, that when she makes herself known, then she is understood.” (On the Trinity 7.4). For this reason we may say that the self-identification of the Church is experienced specifically by one who dwells in the Church and is a living member of her living body. One cannot help but notice how in our time questions arise and are discussed that have long been quite sufficiently resolved by the writers of the ancient Church. Who is not aware that the question of the Church is the chief, principle question in modern polemics with sectarianism in various forms? And of course, in conducting these polemics one must always bear in mind the dogmatic conclusions reached by the theological thought of the ancient Church. This is why a study on the history of the dogma concerning the Church is able to meet the modern needs of church life. _______ Orthodox Wisdom is dedicated to sharing the writings and lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church. Today's conversation with Keri Eichberger is something we all need to hear: how to live with less worry and more peace. Author of the brand new book: Win Over Worry: Conquer What Shakes You and Soar with the One Who Overcomes, Keri, mother of five (now there are five worries!) speaks of her own process in overcoming worry with the truth of God's Word. Yes, there's a giveaway! Leave a comment below or on social media to be entered to win her book! Some gems from Keri: We must be aware of the temptation to rely on ourselves and our own abilities, for true peace and freedom can only be found when we fully trust and surrender to God. Worry is rooted in fear: fear of helplessness and fear of worthlessness. The more people I love, the more reason I'll have to worry—until and unless I give them all to God's care. Simple steps to worry less takes a commitment and a decision to follow those steps. I worry less when I remember that God sees so much that we don't see. Identify your root of worry and cover it with God's truth: He is all loving and all powerful. Overview: On this episode of WELCOME HEART: Living a Legacy Life, our host Sue Donaldson is joined by guest Keri Eichberger as they dive deep into the topic of worry and its impact on our lives. The conversation begins with a focus on faith and the desire to make a difference in the lives of loved ones through their love for Jesus. The importance of living boldly and vulnerably in our faith is emphasized, as it brings glory to God and raises "kingdom builders" who can make a positive impact in the world. The discussion then shifts to the root causes of worry and how unresolved worry can turn into fear. The speaker shares personal experiences, like worrying about their child driving, and explains how these fears can stem from deeper rooted fears of helplessness and worthlessness. They highlight the importance of identifying and addressing these root causes in order to overcome worry, reminding listeners that these fears are lies and that we are never helpless or worthless, drawing strength from the truths of God. In addition to exploring personal experiences with worry, the episode also discusses how faith impacts daily life and how it is important to show reliance on God rather than trying to handle everything on our own. The speaker shares personal struggles and how they rely on God's grace to navigate their responsibilities. They also touch on the prevalence of worry among people of all ages and provide practical strategies for dealing with worry, such as writing down reminders of God's love and control. The episode continues with an examination of the origins of worry and the tendency for people, including the speaker herself, to learn unhealthy coping strategies and avoid addressing the true source of their suffering. The importance of unlearning and relearning trust in God rather than relying on oneself or the world is discussed. The conversation then moves to the challenges of parenting and the need for vulnerability in building intimacy and allowing others to witness the grace of God. The speaker encourages authenticity and transparency, acknowledging that it is God being tested, not the individual. They also tackle the issue of self-reliance and the tendency to worship one's own abilities. The speaker references Psalm 73 and ponders whether worry is more prevalent now compared to 100 years ago. The episode concludes with reflections on leaving a legacy and the importance of embracing and relating to others. The speaker addresses encounters with non-believers and the need to overcome fear and self-righteousness in order to meet others where they are. Their personal journey of growth, including overcoming worry and finding more peace through a closer relationship with God, is shared. The speaker also discusses their decision to write a book on anxiety to help others and their research process. They suggest resources for fostering faith in young children, such as reading biographies of Christians, and highlight the importance of honoring trust in difficult circumstances rather than offering empty platitudes. Throughout the episode, Sue Donaldson and Keri Eichberger provide insights and personal anecdotes that listeners can relate to. They explore the complexities of worry, the role of faith in navigating life's challenges, and the importance of leaving a legacy rooted in love and empathy. Listeners are left with a deeper understanding of worry and practical strategies to address it, as well as inspiration to live a legacy life with less worry and more peace. Overview: On 14 July, Times Live shared an article titled, “Cotton On to the fact that black lives matter,” spotlighting the defamation suit that Influencer and Blogger Shan Fourie laid out against a group of women who subsequently dubbed their collective movement #dontshushme. The article can be found at https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2020-07-14-cotton-on-to-the-fact-that-black-lives-matter/. Durban based lifestyle blogger with over 15K followers and Mom to 3, Shan Fourie was publicly called a racist after she used her own platform to elevate discussions around diversity by inviting her friend, singer-songwriter, entrepreneur and women's empowerment activist LeAnne Dlamini to share an open letter to white mamas about raising inclusive children. This is Shan and LeAnne's honest story. Remember, “People are hard to hate close up. Move in.” Brene Brown in Braving the Wilderness Links: Open Letter to White Mama's from LeAnne D: https://shanfourie.co.za/anopenletter/ About EGH (End Girl Hate) Campaign: https://www.ldhworld.com/aboutldh Media Statement: I have taken the last few days to allow the commentary on this Podcast to run it's full course - having especially noted requests from a number of thought leaders on this issue to allow WOC to speak, without their voices being overshadowed or interrupted. There can be no doubt that the issue at hand is one that is deeply emotive and consequentially steeped in controversy. I understand the concerns raised, in full. The aim of my Podcast is to provide a safe, inclusive space for divergent voices to have honest conversations about the issues that matter. This is because I believe that making progress towards true healing and unity is possible only when we are brave enough to engage, wholeheartedly, on the tough issues - however uncomfortable. As my post stated, women on both sides of the issue - including a number whom are not subject to any possibly pending litigation - were actively invited to share their respective stories. Despite the discomfort, controversy and criticism that I have received, what has unfolded in the social media commentary was unavoidable and I have made no attempts to interject or to shut that commentary down before it has run it's full course. That is because the nature of this discussion is steeped in deep pain, which will take time to resolve, through hard, honest conversation across existing divides. As the host of The Honest Hour Podcast, my aim has and will always be to provide an open and inclusive platform for all voices. I stand in unison with each women bravely speaking their truth so we can pave a way forward, together. In order to contribute to constructive change, I continue to welcome guests from all sides of any narrative on to the Podcast to chat openly - as I have done with this issue. I remain committed to continue hosting a safe place for divergent voices to be heard, should those voices choose to actively engage as I have offered. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/christina-masureik/support

Host: Dr. Agboola MD, MS Guests: Dr. Arelene Chung MD, Dr. Chris Doty MD, Dr. Alicia Kurtz MD Overview: On this episode, Doctors Agboola, Chung, Kurtz, and Doty discuss the topic of “The Elephant in the Room: ‘Burnout’”. They spend time discussing: Defining the term of burnout, How to recognize symptoms of burnout in others, Getting past the platitudes of “yoga & exercise”, Moral injury, The Unspoken Curriculum, and Models of Wellness. Online modalities such as these include Airway Stories and Real Talk “Burnout” ≄ Depression Recognizing burnout is often difficult because each person manifests it in different ways. Look for acute changes in a person’s behavior or mood. “Burnout” is a moving target, there are a variety of different ways to approach it References: Stanford Model of Wellness : https://wellmd.stanford.edu/content/dam/sm/wellmd/documents/2017-wellmd-status-report-dist-1.pdf National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience : https://nam.edu/initiatives/clinician-resilience-and-well-being/ Medscape National Physician Burnout Depression and Suicide Report 2019 : https://www.medscape.com/slideshow/2019-lifestyle-burnout-depression-6011056#1
Host: Dr. Isaac Agboola, MD, MS Guest: Dr. Zach Jarou, MD, MBA Overview: On this episode, Dr. Agboola and Dr. Jarou venture into the oftentimes convoluted task of applying to Emergency Medicine residency. They discuss common pitfalls and misconceptions, giving evidence-based advice on how to increase success in applying whether it be to a community or educational setting. This episode is primarily geared towards medical students applying as well as advisors for these individuals. Key Resources: EMRA & Cord Advising Guide https://www.emra.org/books/msadvisingguide/msag/ EMRA Match Tool https://webapps.emra.org/utils/spa/match#/search/map EMRA Student-Resident Mentorship Program (program helped to find mentors for medical students interested in EM residency) https://www.emra.org/students/advising-resources/student-resident-mentorship-program/ Program Director Interview Series - Various PD’s give an inside look into what they are looking for in an applicant for their programs https://www.emra.org/emresident/articles/categories/topics/medical-students/match/program-director-interviews Key Points: Plan your application based on your personal situation. You are probably applying to more programs than you need to. When it comes to away rotations, rotate in an environment that is the best for you, given what you want to get out of residency. The three-year vs. four-year program discussion should be less about the training time and more about how that particular program is structured, but most importantly about how it can help you to achieve your goals long term. Statistically speaking the things that have been shown to be most important to applicants are: (1) Geography, (2) Practice Environment, (3) Step 1 cutoffs, and (4) Time (shift length/shift amount, three years vs. four years). Applicants that are IMG, DO, or other special circumstances should take careful consideration when applying. An average applicant (i.e., average board scores, SLOEs, research experiences) should be applying to approximately 30 programs. There is no perfect equation for success in the Match; it’s important that you meet with trusted advisors and find a plan that best suits you and your competitiveness. Dr. Agboola talks with Dr. Tomas Diaz about the complex topic that is diversity and the role it plays in medicine and specifically EM. Host: Dr. Isaac Agboola MD, MS PGY-1 YALE Guest: Dr. Tomas Diaz MD PGY-4 UCSF @tomasrdiaz Overview: On this episode, Dr. Agboola and Dr. Diaz discuss the complex topic of diversity and the role that it plays in medicine, highlighting its role in EM. They discuss what programs can do to foster diversity and recruit diverse individuals in the future. They delve into a discussion of how imagery can become expectations and define terms such as minority tax, microaggression, and stereotype threat. Interspersed throughout this discussion, they open up about their personal experiences as providers of color at their respective training sites. Everyone has implicit biases. It is important to be aware of these implicit biases and utilize that information to invoke intrapersonal change. Just like allies are useful in overcoming the barriers faced by the LGBTQ community, allies are also important in overcoming the barriers faced by underrepresented minorities in medicine.
Dr. Isaac Agboola along with a group interns from across the country approach how to navigate the challenging parts of residency outside of just the basic science. Overview: On this episode, Isaac is joined by an illustrious cast of interns from all across the country to discuss the other side of residency outside of the science. This is the Resident Survival Guide, addressing the new and challenging aspects of transitioning from being a medical student to now being someone’s physician. “How to deal with uncertainty?”,“Resident wellness”, “Disposition indecision”, “How to deal with a difficulty attending”, “End of life discussions” etc. Key Points Residency is hard…. for everyone. Sometimes the best lessons come from people who aren’t your attendings. Every shift make a goal of something to improve on. Wellness is as wellness does. Do what makes you happy and keeps you balanced. Lean on your co-residents they can be your greatest support system.
