(0:00:33) Al: My name is Al, and we’re here today to talk about Cottagecore Games. (0:00:34) Micah: And I’m Micah (0:00:39) Al: Woo. (0:00:40) Micah: Yay (0:00:40) Al: So excited. (0:00:42) Micah: It’s still as much as I have heard you say cart cottagecore games, it’s still always those (0:00:50) Al: I keep like bouncing between like should it be cottagecore should it be farming (0:00:56) Al: it’s like I was running something over in my head today I was like games that (0:01:01) Al: quite often have a farming component but not always and are sometimes considered (0:01:05) Al: cozy but not always like we’d (0:01:06) Micah: I think it’s I think for me it’s because every time you have me on we are (0:01:15) Micah: talking about farming games specifically like you know the core the core farming (0:01:17) Al: Yeah, you have you have a niche. (0:01:20) Al: Ah. (laughs) (0:01:23) Micah: game groups the harvest moons the story of season (0:01:29) Al: Exactly. I mean, well, the thing is, right, most people don’t want to spend a lot of time (0:01:35) Al: on a lot of those games. I just want to go back to stardew. And this is the cheapest (0:01:37) Micah: understandable. I am more than happy to, uh, to bite the bullet for everybody else to be able to (0:01:46) Micah: experience, uh, you know. (0:01:49) Al: Harvest Moon game we’ve paid for in quite a long time. So, you know. OK, well, we’ll (0:01:52) Micah: Ah! Sure. Yeah, sure. (0:01:55) Al: get to that. So, before we get to that, we have… (0:01:59) Al: News. We’ve got a bunch of news to talk about. (0:02:03) Al: Oh yeah, I didn’t actually say… We’re going to talk about the new Harvest Moon game. (0:02:06) Al: Harvest Moon’s home to be home. (0:02:08) Al: But we’ve got news before that. (0:02:10) Al: First of all, Maika, what have you been up to? (0:02:12) Micah: I have been very busy. I have been (0:02:17) Micah: Very busy doing a few things I have work has been (0:02:22) Micah: Really crazy, and I I love that like I love when I’m busy, so it’s not a complaint. You know I love when I’m my time is (0:02:30) Micah: Caught up and preoccupied so I it’s it’s great, but it has not left me a lot of time for games (0:02:38) Micah: so (0:02:40) Micah: Primarily what I have been playing. (0:02:42) Micah: I have some personal projects that I’ve been working on too that are not work-related, (0:03:12) Micah: taking up a lot of time, which is great, and I’m really happy about that. (0:03:17) Micah: There is one where I have had some time to be able to play some older Pokémon games, (0:03:25) Micah: and I can’t really say why yet, but I have been enjoying that. (0:03:28) Al: I’m intrigued. I wasn’t intrigued until he said you can’t say why. (0:03:34) Micah: It is a big project that I’ve been working on for months now, and it is becoming a… (0:03:42) Micah: It’s one of those projects where you start and you’re like, “This is a really small, (0:03:46) Micah: fun idea,” and then it just grows over time, and you’re like, “This is getting really (0:03:49) Micah: out of hand, and I don’t know how I’m going to be able to get a hold of this.” (0:03:53) Micah: But it’s been really fun, and it has allowed me some time to do work and stay busy, but (0:03:58) Micah: also play games, play some games. (0:04:01) Micah: But primarily it’s been Pokémon, is what I’ve been playing. (0:04:04) Micah: I did download, I bought and downloaded Fields of Mistria. (0:04:09) Micah: I have not played it yet. (0:04:10) Micah: I’m very excited. (0:04:12) Micah: But I haven’t had a chance to touch it yet. (0:04:14) Al: I haven’t bought that one yet, that’s on my list of “I will probably pay this at some point, maybe.” (0:04:18) Micah: Yeah, yeah. (0:04:20) Micah: I just had seen, you know, the the most buzz around a farming (0:04:26) Micah: sim since I think maybe Stardew in like communities that were (0:04:32) Micah: specifically excited about like Stardew and you know that that (0:04:39) Micah: type of farming sim. (0:04:40) Micah: So I that. (0:04:42) Micah: Intrigued enough to be like, okay, if this is if people are like, you know, recognizing (0:04:47) Micah: it as a not a like competitor or anything or like the new Stardew or anything like that. (0:04:52) Micah: But if there’s enough interest there, then maybe it’s something to, to look into. (0:04:56) Micah: So, and I like the art style. (0:04:58) Micah: I like the pixel art and stuff. (0:04:59) Micah: So it’s a little, we’ll see have yet to play it. (0:05:02) Al: So, other than obviously Harvest Moon Home, Sweet Home, I have been trying to get back (0:05:02) Micah: So I can’t really say anything about it. (0:05:05) Micah: What about you? (0:05:06) Micah: What have you been up to? (0:05:13) Al: into Coral Island after their 1.1 update. Sometimes when you go back to a game, it takes (0:05:20) Al: a while to get yourself back into the zone. I spent over a month, I spent 100 hours in (0:05:29) Al: in Carl Island. (0:05:30) Al: So I’m not back at– (0:05:32) Al: at that point yet, but we’ll see. (0:05:34) Al: I mean that in and of itself might– (0:05:36) Al: will be interesting to talk about, you know, (0:05:38) Al: when we get to that, if I– if I don’t end up. (0:05:40) Al: But– (0:05:41) Micah: world’s biggest coral island fan. (0:05:42) Al: because– (0:05:45) Micah: As far as I know, at least he are. (0:05:48) Al: I like it! It’s a really fun game. (0:05:50) Al: But I think it’s interesting because if I– (0:05:52) Al: if I don’t manage to push myself back into it, (0:05:54) Al: that says something. (0:05:56) Al: Because I’ve managed to– I’ve managed to get obsessed (0:05:58) Al: about Stardew every single time I’ve gone back to it. (0:06:00) Al: to it. And (0:06:02) Al: that, you know, so if I can’t that says something, you know, like I started a new (0:06:07) Al: save for 1.6 when it came out and got perfection for the first time on it. So like, you know, (0:06:14) Micah: Oh, nice. That’s awesome. (0:06:15) Al: that’s how obsessed I got over it last time. So we’ll see. We’ll see. (0:06:17) Micah: Yeah. (0:06:19) Micah: I love that, though. I love when you… (0:06:22) Micah: That feeling of, like, finding a game that lets you do that, like, lets you obsess over it in that way. (0:06:28) Al: Yeah. (0:06:30) Al: I don’t know why does it happen though. (0:06:32) Al: Why do I keep coming back to stardew and keep playing it? (0:06:35) Micah: It’s your comfort game you know same reason why probably I’ve watched I don’t know the office (0:06:43) Micah: 18,000 times over not because it’s like incredible really and (0:06:48) Micah: Not because you know the a lot of the jokes are especially early on are not like questionable (0:06:52) Al: Heh. (0:06:54) Al: Yeah. (0:06:54) Micah: Especially today, but just cuz it’s Scott like you know (0:06:59) Micah: I don’t I don’t have to I don’t gotta think too hard about it. I just know what it is (0:07:05) Micah: It’s it becomes a comfort thing (0:07:08) Al: Fair. (0:07:08) Micah: Stardew Stardew Valley is your the office. I don’t let’s let’s let’s not use that let’s better on that comparison (0:07:14) Micah: I’m that I apologize that me. I don’t know why that made me think of it, but (0:07:18) Micah: I have been looking (0:07:21) Micah: looking at getting (0:07:23) Micah: back into (0:07:24) Micah: Pocket camp too recently cuz I kind of want to see it off (0:07:26) Al: Oh, good timing. Are you… are you gonna buy the offline version? (0:07:29) Micah: You know I’d put a lot of time into it (0:07:33) Micah: and money (0:07:36) Micah: I (0:07:37) Micah: Don’t probably here and there. I think part of it is that I just there were so many events that I (0:07:43) Micah: Didn’t feel like I could keep up with it as much. I will say (0:07:49) Micah: My wife Becky has is devastated. She is I (0:07:53) Micah: Think probably the biggest Animal Crossing fan (0:07:56) Micah: I I know like by far and I would have said years ago. I would have said that’s me (0:08:02) Micah: I am the biggest Animal Crossing fan that I know. (0:08:05) Micah: But that has, she has since taken that crown. (0:08:08) Micah: She has never stopped playing New Horizons. (0:08:12) Micah: She, she played New Leaf a ton. (0:08:14) Micah: She played through, you know, all of the, the previous (0:08:16) Micah: Harvest Moon’s, or Harvest Moon’s god. (0:08:19) Micah: I’m already in Harvest Moon Brain. (0:08:21) Micah: Uh, she’s played through the previous Animal Crossings, but (0:08:27) Micah: she has been, uh, nonstop playing New Horizons. (0:08:32) Micah: And I believe she’s literally, it’s, it’s Sunday. (0:08:35) Micah: So, you know, it’s her call, she calls her Goblin Day. (0:08:39) Micah: She’s literally out there playing New Horizons right now. (0:08:42) Micah: But in addition to that, she has never stopped playing Pocket Camp. (0:08:46) Micah: She has like thousands of hours, I would guess, in Pocket Camp. (0:08:53) Micah: And there are people that she knows only through Pocket Camp that (0:09:01) Micah: she’s like sad that it’s closing because she doesn’t know these (0:09:05) Micah: things outside of it. (0:09:05) Micah: Like she’s got, you know, hundreds of like friendship interactions (0:09:10) Micah: where they trade gifts or they trade, you know, items or whatever (0:09:13) Micah: in the game, but she doesn’t know who these people actually are. (0:09:16) Micah: So like when the game shuts down, that’s just going to go away, which (0:09:16) Al: Yeah. Well, and being a Nintendo game, it’s not going to have, like, free text, (0:09:20) Micah: is like an incredibly sad thing. (0:09:21) Micah: But like, how do you resolve that? (0:09:23) Micah: You know, like, what do you, right? (0:09:28) Al: so you wouldn’t have a way to be able to save that. Yeah. (0:09:28) Micah: There’s no social aspect to it. (0:09:31) Micah: Like broader social aspect to it that you can, you know, uh, (0:09:36) Micah: converse with the people outside of outside for good reason, right? (0:09:39) Micah: Like for kids games, but, but also in situations like this, it’s just (0:09:44) Micah: kind of, kind of weird and sad and like an interesting thing, but yeah. (0:09:48) Micah: So I, that has, has like touched me enough that I’m like, I kind of just (0:09:54) Micah: want to go back and see it off and, you know, be there when it shuts down (0:09:58) Micah: and stuff, because I’ve put so much time and unfortunately money into it. (0:10:02) Micah: so… (0:10:02) Al: Yeah, fair enough. Speaking of mobile games, I have gotten back into Marvel Snap quite (0:10:03) Micah: Bye. (0:10:06) Micah: So that’s next on the roster. (0:10:14) Micah: Oh, okay. (0:10:16) Al: a lot as well, like I have put so much time into it the last couple of months that I’m (0:10:26) Al: not quite at the top rank this season, but I’m close, and if I hit it, it’ll… (0:10:32) Al: be the first time I’ve hit it ever. So yeah, big. That’s big. 100. Or, oh, what’s the 100? (0:10:38) Micah: what is the top rank in marvel snap what’s the like the title for oh okay it’s not like a okay (0:10:43) Al: Platinum, I think. I don’t really pay attention to the names, I just pay attention to the number, (0:10:48) Al: right? Big number. Number go big. But I think it’s platinum. Oh no, it’s infinite. Infinite. (0:10:56) Micah: Oh, okay. All right (0:10:57) Al: So yeah, I’m at like 83 just now, so we’re… (0:11:01) Micah: Yeah, well I (0:11:04) Micah: Have heard nothing but good things about Marvel snap from those who play it, but I have never I’ve never (0:11:11) Al: Yeah, I find it really fun. I like its simplicity but also how complicated you can make it if (0:11:20) Micah: Mm-hmm sure (0:11:21) Al: you want to. Like I’ve got a deck that is like if I get the right cards basically unbeatable (0:11:29) Al: but you have to have a different way to win as well because you sometimes don’t get those (0:11:32) Micah: right yeah can I get those multiple win engines (0:11:34) Al: cards so it’s yeah, it’s fun. Exactly, exactly. (0:11:42) Al: It’s fun. I’m really enjoying it. They added a lot of stuff while I wasn’t playing it as well so (0:11:47) Al: trying to get back into that and being like oh they’ve got these alliances and leagues and all (0:11:54) Al: these cards that I don’t have because I hadn’t unlocked them etc etc but it’s good fun. Cool, (0:11:59) Micah: No, awesome (0:12:02) Al: so that’s what we’ve been up to. Now we’re going to talk about some news. First of all, (0:12:06) Al: Let’s build a zoo have announced a new update the (0:12:11) Al: structures update and this I mean it’s like there’s big balloons (0:12:21) Al: it’s interesting they call it a monsters monstrous structures I think it’s basically (0:12:26) Al: just because there are two massive balloons. (0:12:30) Micah: I do see, in the images, a giant warthog thing and a giant bear, but that’s the (0:12:37) Al: Exactly. There’s a lot of quality, well exactly, there’s a lot of quality of life improvements (0:12:40) Micah: extent of what I see. As far as monstrous goes, you know, (0:12:47) Al: as well, but like the name seems to be entirely hinging on those two balloons. Yeah, maybe. (0:12:54) Micah: Or just the concept that there’s a lot of stuff, you know, there’s like it’s a big update. Maybe I don’t know (0:13:01) Al: It’s a lot of little things, I think, right? Like you can now rename animals is the first (0:13:05) Al: thing in the patch notes, right? (0:13:07) Al: Like that’s not a mate, I mean, it’s fine, it’s good. (0:13:10) Al: Like I’m not saying it’s bad, but it’s not like this is a game changer. (0:13:10) Micah: Mm-hmm. (0:13:14) Micah: Right, yeah. (0:13:16) Al: Yeah, it just, there’s lots of quality of life improvements. (0:13:19) Al: So if you’ve been playing, enjoy those updates. (0:13:22) Al: If you haven’t been playing because you couldn’t rename your animals, now you can. (0:13:26) Micah: or because there weren’t giant monster balloons. (0:13:31) Al: Yeah, yeah. (0:13:32) Al: Next we have Cat Cafe Manager 2. (0:13:36) Al: big city bliss. (0:13:37) Al: The Kickstarter is now live. (0:13:39) Al: Micah, have you seen this game yet? (0:13:40) Micah: I have not. (0:13:41) Al: Had you seen the original Kat Kaffee manager? (0:13:44) Al: Kat Kaffee manager. (0:13:44) Micah: I have not. (0:13:46) Micah: I can’t say that. (0:13:47) Micah: I so I should what I should say is I have seen games that feel similar in that, you (0:13:56) Micah: know, I’ve been on the Switch eShop and there’s a lot of games that look similar, I guess. (0:14:03) Micah: But is this the the original? (0:14:06) Micah: Is this the OG cafe manager? (0:14:10) Al: a good question. That I don’t have the answer to. Yeah, it’s quite a big difference to the (0:14:11) Micah: I like the art for this much better than all the other stuff (0:14:21) Al: previous game. So the previous one came out in 2022. It’s not like it looked bad, right? (0:14:28) Al: But it’s different art style. I do prefer the newer one. It’s very, I guess, shiny Paper (0:14:39) Al: from REO. (0:14:40) Micah: Okay. Yeah. (0:14:40) Al: It’s how I would describe it. This one, right? I like the look of it. It’s interesting. So they (0:14:47) Al: seem to… I’ve noticed that they are planning on having like an actual story here in this one, (0:14:56) Al: because I think the previous one didn’t have that. So if you look at one of their updates on (0:15:00) Al: Kickstarter, they say “Cat Caffe Manager 1 had a nice but fairly straightforward storyline (0:15:06) Al: with the sequel, we’re excited to introduce more complex characters, mysteries and even (0:15:10) Al: somewhat of a villain. Well, yeah, there you go. Yeah, it’s in. I’m intrigued to see what (0:15:12) Micah: Oh a villain in my cat cafe? (0:15:18) Micah: I I there are a lot of things that that could mean and that scares me (0:15:24) Micah: We’re talking about like, you know adoptable animals i’m worried about who the villain is but (0:15:28) Al: happens. We’ll see. We’ll see. I’m excited to find out. (0:15:33) Micah: It’s really (0:15:35) Micah: It is a very cute art style though. I like it a lot. I do like that. Um (0:15:40) Micah: kind of flat 2D characters in a 3D space. (0:15:42) Micah: kind of thing. Obviously, you know, things like Snacko and stuff like that. Paper Mario, like you said. (0:15:48) Micah: I like that concept. (0:15:52) Micah: So, yeah, it looks really cool. (0:15:54) Al: it hasn’t hasn’t hit its goal yet but it’s going to let’s be honest it’s it’s (0:15:59) Al: 32,000 of 40,000 so it’s it’s it’s nearly there and it’s try (0:16:06) Micah: I should clarify too, when I had said, you know, I’ve seen games similar to this, I don’t mean art style gameplay, stuff like that, more just like the branding of it feels, you know, like it felt very, obviously cat cafe manager, it’s very straight to the point, you know, like, and I see a lot of like, I don’t know, whatever tycoon, whatever, you know, like, manager, whatever, it’s there’s so many of those that I just, I could have seen this and I wouldn’t (0:16:34) Al: So the first one does have an 84% steam rating, very positive with 1,500 reviews. So it’s (0:16:36) Micah: know, because I kind of, you know, (0:16:44) Micah: - Wow. (0:16:50) Al: obviously some people liked it, so that’s good. And the fact that they’ve successfully (0:16:55) Al: made a game before makes me much more encouraged about backing a Kickstarter. It’s not just (0:17:01) Al: one of these Skinner boxes that they’ve thrown together in a week and throw (0:17:04) Al: on the eShop, which happens so often. Yeah, it’s getting so much worse with that. (0:17:05) Micah: Right, God, the AI art, so much of it on there. (0:17:13) Micah: Yeah, they really gotta get a handle on that. (0:17:15) Micah: You know, nevermind. (0:17:17) Micah: I don’t wanna start to get riled up a little bit. (0:17:23) Micah: I’ll keep it brief. (0:17:24) Micah: Nintendo made a big deal about not having, you know, (0:17:26) Micah: shovelware on their systems like they did with the Wii. (0:17:29) Micah: And then they just instead opened up the eShop (0:17:32) Micah: to literally everything. (0:17:34) Al: Yeah, and it’s a bit of a balance, right? Because I think it’s important that we have (0:17:40) Al: open access to develop and share your games. But… (0:17:41) Micah: oh yeah for sure but like maybe some level of regulation like (0:17:48) Al: Well, this is the thing they do. It’s not like with Steam where it’s like you can literally (0:17:51) Al: just create it and launch it with no, like, oversight. On the Switch, you have to go through (0:17:56) Micah: Mm-hmm. (0:17:57) Al: a process where they approve it. That’s what’s weird is, like, how are they approving all this (0:18:02) Al: nonsense like they’re not they’re clearly not (0:18:04) Al: approving it they’re just clicking the button they’re not actually looking at (0:18:07) Al: it so why do they have the process there why do they bother (0:18:08) Micah: Or they have some like automated process that’s relying on some artificial intelligence to be like it checks these boxes. So it is approved (0:18:17) Al: yeah yeah maybe they’re just going is it a game does it run there you go that’s (0:18:21) Al: fine but I don’t know (0:18:25) Al: next we have super zoo story they have announced that their kickstarter goes (0:18:30) Al: live on the first of October. It’s just another… (0:18:34) Al: It’s another Zoo Tycoon game. Yeah, that’s it. (0:18:41) Micah: It definitely looks like a Z-Teku. (0:18:42) Al: Am I gonna play this game? I don’t know. It’s it. So I will say, I will see. The one (0:18:49) Al: thing that makes me more interested in this is it does appear to be like you… (0:18:54) Al: It’s an RPG style game rather than like a God style management game. And that (0:19:01) Al: interests me, because I am not a huge fan. (0:19:02) Micah: I agree, that- (0:19:04) Al: I am a fan of management games, but I am a fan of RPG management. (0:19:10) Micah: I agree with that. I’m also in that same boat where if it’s if it says tycoon and it’s got a you know (0:19:17) Micah: Like you’re you’re kind of like managing resources and filling a space and then (0:19:23) Micah: Making money. I’m not as interested in it (0:19:26) Micah: But the the RPG the added RPG element sounds more interesting to me (0:19:32) Micah: You know same way that like was a golf story like to be fair like loved Mario golf (0:19:36) Al: Yes, Golf Story is fantastic! (0:19:40) Micah: You know (0:19:41) Micah: Some of the like more goofy golf game games like (0:19:46) Micah: non-traditional golf games big fan of those but (0:19:49) Micah: Things like golf story sports story like that where they add an RPG element to it definitely makes it much more (0:19:55) Micah: You know exciting and more unique of an experience. So (0:20:00) Al: Yeah, yeah. I’m not a huge golf fan. I mean, I don’t even mean in real life, right? Because (0:20:04) Micah: Oh me neither. I don’t know. I don’t know anything about golf (0:20:09) Al: that’s a whole different discussion. I will rant about golf if you want me to, but I don’t think (0:20:13) Al: we want to. But game-wise, I like Mario Golf, and that’s probably about it. But yeah, Golf Story (0:20:24) Al: absolutely adored it. It was fantastic in so many ways. The actual golf was fun, (0:20:29) Al: But also, it was just– (0:20:30) Al: just my kind of humor. (0:20:31) Al: The story was just enough to be interesting, (0:20:35) Al: but not too much that you felt completely overwhelmed. (0:20:38) Al: It was my perfect RPG. (0:20:40) Al: It was just enough. (0:20:41) Al: Just enough RPG in– (0:20:44) Al: just enough RP in my G. Yeah, sports story was good as well. (0:20:49) Al: A little bit rushed, but I still really enjoyed it. (0:20:55) Al: Yeah, so I mean, I’m probably going to play this one purely (0:20:58) Al: because it’s rather than the kind of, you know. (0:21:00) Al: Tycoon style game, it is an RPG style game. (0:21:03) Al: It’ll be interesting to see how they balance that, obviously, (0:21:05) Al: because these things have to be on a much smaller scale (0:21:08) Al: because you’re doing everything every time. (0:21:11) Al: And will there be some level of automation to that? (0:21:13) Al: Like how, you know, Stardew adds that in as you go. (0:21:16) Al: We’ll just, you know, we’ll see what happens. (0:21:20) Al: Next, we have a new update from Wildflowers, (0:21:22) Al: which came out a few days ago. (0:21:23) Al: This is the magical creatures update. (0:21:26) Al: And can you guess what this brings to the game? (0:21:29) Micah: I’m gonna guess some magical creatures. No way (0:21:30) Al: You are correct. I know, imagine that. Go for it. I need to find if there’s a list. (0:21:37) Micah: Can I guess some of the magical creatures unicorn, oh, okay, never mind abort abort (0:21:48) Al: Oh, here we go. I can’t see a unicorn, but no, you’re correct. I think they’re trying to, (0:21:50) Micah: Okay, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s not there, you know (0:21:55) Al: you know, not spoil everything, but what I do see is what looks like a cross between (0:21:59) Al: a tiger and an elephant. (0:22:00) Al: This is like tiger legs, elephant head, but also the size of a small dog. (0:22:00) Micah: Mm-hmm (0:22:04) Micah: Don’t don’t know that I’ve I know that one don’t know that I (0:22:09) Micah: Do see that one. It is very cute though. Do you’re like (0:22:14) Micah: Description of it, you know tiger with the head of an elephant just (0:22:19) Micah: Was did not prepare me for what it looks like and it is very cute (0:22:23) Al: that’s what it is though, right? Like you can’t say I’m wrong. Yeah. And then like some sort of (0:22:24) Micah: It is you’re totally right, but it is it’s really cute (0:22:32) Al: lizard gecko type thing with chicken legs. And then a Shiba Inu, of course. (0:22:34) Micah: Yep. (0:22:35) Micah: Chicken Lizard? (0:22:37) Micah: The classic mystical creature? (0:22:40) Micah: Yep. (0:22:42) Al: It’s like, what makes that magical? I don’t know. That’s the main thing. There’s other things as (0:22:49) Al: as well. There’s some more story about the lighthouse. (0:22:51) Al: Um, I don’t know. (0:22:53) Al: So this is the time, I mean, well, when I mentioned it to him, he said, oh, I guess (0:22:58) Micah: Oh, okay. (0:23:01) Micah: Is Kevin going to be okay? (0:23:05) Micah: That this is their final update? (0:23:08) Al: I need to get back into the game then. (0:23:09) Al: Uh, so I think it’s been a while since he’s played, he’s played it. (0:23:12) Al: So we’ll, we’ll see, we’ll see how he feels once he’s actually played it. (0:23:16) Micah: Got it. (0:23:17) Al: The update. (0:23:18) Al: Be interesting to see what the studio do next. (0:23:20) Micah: Yeah, definitely. (0:23:22) Micah: And now that they have got such a, like, you know, well-loved thing under their belt, there’s… (0:23:27) Al: Yeah, the moment you see from the makers of Wild Flowers, you’re like “OK, I’m paying attention”. (0:23:34) Al: So next we have possibly one of the weirdest things I’ve seen in a while, and this is (0:23:40) Al: “Bokumono Life and Love”, which is a G-mode phone game from a long time ago that has been ported (0:23:50) Al: to Steam and Switch. (0:23:52) Micah: I cannot tell you how happy I am about this for a couple reasons just also for (0:24:02) Micah: full clarification it is not in English there is no English for this it is a (0:24:06) Al: Yes, I’m important to point that out. (0:24:09) Micah: straight-up port of the Japanese phone game that’s it they’re not doing (0:24:14) Micah: anything else with it (0:24:16) Al: The good thing is the Steam page does make that very clear, it’s above the buy button, (0:24:18) Micah: yeah (0:24:21) Al: it says “English language not supported” in red letters. (0:24:22) Micah: right (0:24:25) Micah: there is uh it looks like well it says partial controller support but it it (0:24:32) Micah: looks like there are controller controls like you know I see like L&R buttons and (0:24:39) Micah: the screenshots and stuff like that so you know there’s not like you won’t need (0:24:43) Micah: some t9 cell phone flip phone peripheral to control the game or whatever it’s (0:24:47) Al: Yeah. (0:24:52) Micah: it is straight up that port though and I love that there are a couple reasons (0:24:56) Micah: why I love that one really stupid really dumb right like really like unexpected (0:25:02) Micah: weird bizarre decision from marvelous great I love it but also because there (0:25:10) Micah: are so many lost media games that are caught in this like g-mode old Japanese (0:25:19) Micah: phone game that like… maybe this o- (0:25:22) Micah: opens the door for more of those to be able to release- get- be released like this? (0:25:24) Al: Well, that’s an interesting question. Are they going to make this technology that they’ve (0:25:30) Al: clearly built as an emulator or whatever? I don’t know exactly what they’ve done, (0:25:34) Al: but something. Are they going to be able to share that with other people? That would be really cool. (0:25:35) Micah: Mm-hmm (0:25:39) Micah: Right, definitely. Well, the other positive there is that (0:25:44) Micah: even just releasing the game gives way to a lot of (0:25:48) Micah: really brilliant people in the (0:25:51) Micah: homebrew community to be able to dissect it and figure out (0:25:56) Micah: what they did as far as you know emulation goes and (0:26:00) Micah: maybe be able to just find a way to (0:26:04) Micah: to… to… (0:26:05) Micah: you know, port some of that stuff themselves, or you know, I don’t know if there’s a lot (0:26:10) Micah: of opportunities here for some really interesting and really cool, like, lost games to be able (0:26:20) Al: So it looks like they’re not the first people to do this. (0:26:23) Al: So it looks like Gmail themselves (0:26:25) Al: released released a bunch of games on Steam a couple of years ago. (0:26:31) Al: So maybe this is, (0:26:34) Al: you know, because of this, like maybe that technology has then been used in this (0:26:39) Al: situation. (0:26:39) Micah: Mm-hmm. There are also some on the switch as well (0:26:44) Micah: But this I think is the like most (0:26:48) Micah: Popular franchise I could be wrong about this, but I think this is the most popular franchise to be (0:26:52) Al: I don’t think you’re wrong. I think saying a bokumono game on a really niche Japanese (0:27:03) Al: phone brand is possibly the most popular game on that. I believe you. I think probably. (0:27:11) Micah: yeah I I think that that’s possible to at least that’s my impression right is (0:27:17) Micah: that like that’s you know we’re we’re you know in a world now where like being (0:27:23) Micah: able to people people may be more aware of it now as being a thing I know that (0:27:29) Micah: there was a persona game that was like last year (0:27:32) Al: I was just… that is what I was just about to say. I have immediately (0:27:35) Al: changed my opinion on that. When I saw on their list that Persona 3 is one of them. (0:27:40) Micah: Yeah, well it’s so it’s a persona it and it is like a such a like small. I don’t know. Maybe I where is the the (0:27:51) Micah: The like chart that shows the growth between like persona fan base and (0:27:58) Micah: The like harvest moon fam, you know, that’s the story seasons fan base because I (0:27:59) Al: Yeah. (0:28:04) Micah: feel like you know prior to persona 5 that was definitely not like the you know (0:28:11) Micah: Either way (0:28:11) Al: Yeah, but I feel like people are going back to the older games, especially with, you know, (0:28:15) Al: 3 getting its Switch release. I feel like people are going back to the older ones when they started (0:28:18) Micah: oh yeah for sure it is a huge franchise now for sure I just don’t know if like (0:28:28) Micah: you know how big is the heart like how big is the harvest moon name you know (0:28:32) Micah: how big is the story of seasons name you know (0:28:32) Al: Well, and it’s more complicated obviously because like the name in Japan is as big as (0:28:38) Micah: it’s not right (0:28:39) Al: it has ever been, but like what does the main name mean over here? And they don’t use either (0:28:43) Micah: mm-hmm (0:28:47) Al: name because obviously they don’t have an English name for this, right? They obviously (0:28:52) Al: would be calling it Story of Seasons if they had, but then it would be like because it’s (0:28:57) Al: a port. They’ve not done a port, right? So this is the weird thing. They’ve not done (0:29:00) Al: on a port, so actually that’s not true. (0:29:02) Al: I guess they did. They did the original Harvest Moon on Nintendo Switch Online, didn’t (0:29:07) Al: they? And they called that Harvest Moon. They didn’t call that a story of seasons. So maybe (0:29:10) Micah: True. Yeah, you’re right (0:29:12) Al: they would, and maybe they would call this Harvest Moon then if they released it in the (0:29:16) Al: West. What I find interesting is they’re about this game, they have an English description (0:29:16) Micah: Yeah, I don’t know (0:29:20) Al: of this game on Steam. (0:29:23) Micah: Right, like it is it is on the the American Steam store like it is accessible (0:29:29) Al: Even if it’s not just that, it says “enjoy a heartwarming” and this isn’t auto-translated (0:29:34) Al: in Chrome or anything, it just says “enjoy a heartwarming farm life while growing crops (0:29:38) Al: and interacting with animals”. (0:29:39) Al: This title is a port of a title released in 2007 for feature phones in the popular series, (0:29:44) Al: which has been developed for numerous hardware platforms. (0:29:47) Al: It simultaneously includes For Boy, in which a boy is the main character, and For Girl, (0:29:51) Al: in which a girl is the main character. (0:29:52) Micah: No way (0:29:53) Al: Funny that they decided to just add them both and just like smash them together into one (0:29:57) Micah: Yeah (0:29:59) Micah: I’d be curious to like how that plays it like is it just a selection right? (0:29:59) Al: Fair enough. (0:30:03) Micah: Do you just like select which game it is or they kind of just like blood them together? Yeah (0:30:03) Al: I suspect so. (0:30:05) Al: I suspect so, yeah. (0:30:08) Micah: I can’t imagine. There’s a lot of you know (0:30:08) Al: Like, they’re calling it a port. (0:30:10) Al: They’ve not changed it. (0:30:11) Micah: Yeah (0:30:13) Micah: Development going on there. Yeah, so I don’t know I guess between persona and this (0:30:19) Micah: you know, and persona happening with (0:30:22) Micah: in the last within a like, a year, almost a year to date, I (0:30:26) Al: Yeah. (0:30:27) Micah: think. No, September 23, it looks like. But yeah, either (0:30:33) Micah: either way, you know, the fact that bigger games now are (0:30:38) Micah: getting these like G mode ports is kind of exciting. So I don’t (0:30:43) Micah: know, even beyond G mode, there are other mobile games from that (0:30:50) Micah: time period that are just like, you know. (0:30:51) Al: Yeah, I agree. I agree. I look forward to playing Gregory Horror Show, which is another (0:30:52) Micah: Completely lost. That would be great to be able to see some of that stuff. (0:30:58) Micah: Go this route, so. (0:31:04) Al: one, which comes out in October. (0:31:07) Al: All right. Can’t believe we spent that much time talking about a G-mode game. What is (0:31:10) Micah: I mean. (0:31:13) Al: this podcast? Finally, before we get into it, we’ve got a few new games to talk about. (0:31:19) Al: For that, we have. (0:31:21) Al: A board game based on Mika and the Witch’s Mountain that’s coming to Kickstarter. (0:31:28) Micah: Okay, I can’t could not have expected that honestly (0:31:32) Al: No. No. I don’t really know what to say. Yes, yes, I’ll probably buy it. Stop asking. It’s, (0:31:38) Micah: I don’t either. (0:31:43) Al: I mean, it’s very, with the intro, so, okay, I have, my brain’s doing the brain thing. (0:31:50) Al: There’s, it’s called Delivery Witches, right? But it’s not branded Mika on the Witches Mountain (0:31:57) Al: or anything like that, but it’s very definitely Mika, right? Like, it’s the same art. (0:32:02) Al: Chibig shared it on their Twitter, so it’s like very clearly in collaboration with them. And, (0:32:08) Micah: same fonts (0:32:09) Al: and all the characters are the same. They’ve got all their art, etc. Like, it’s very much, (0:32:15) Al: it is the Mika and the Witches Mountain game. They just didn’t call it that. (0:32:20) Micah: Right, right. (0:32:22) Al: Which is fair, I guess. Like, you don’t have to call it the same thing, (0:32:25) Al: But it just I just find it interesting (0:32:27) Al: Um, I. (0:32:28) Micah: yeah it is I i guess I didn’t even think about like you know I i think if I had seen this on its own (0:32:35) Micah: without you telling me um and without drawing that association I probably would have been like (0:32:41) Micah: this looks really familiar but it just seems weird that like they wouldn’t do something to (0:32:42) Al: Yeah (0:32:49) Micah: like further I don’t know maybe that’s enough or I just don’t know if that game is has the uh the (0:32:56) Micah: popularity to be able to. (0:32:58) Micah: to say, like, oh, it is very loosely referential to it, but that’s enough for people to know that it’s based on this game, right? (0:33:07) Micah: Like it’s not, I don’t know, I could see that with other franchises, but maybe not this one. (0:33:13) Al: I think what I find weird is like there’s not a single mention of the game or the game (0:33:19) Al: developer on this Kickstarter page so far. Now granted it’s quite small, like they’ve (0:33:23) Al: not gone live, but they still have like five paragraphs of text and not once does it mention (0:33:29) Al: that it’s based on a game. And the company that’s making it is not the same, right, they’ve (0:33:32) Micah: Yeah, it’s very odd (0:33:36) Al: I’ve obviously been farmed out to another company that makes games. (0:33:40) Micah: But it is the you said it like, how is the developer related? (0:33:47) Al: Well, presumably they own like they are because it is the same characters, right? (0:33:52) Al: They use the same character art that you see in game. (0:33:56) Micah: Yeah, I just meant not not in that way. I meant like how was the other than say the the (0:34:02) Micah: Chibig retweeted it or something, you know, like what what is their relay? (0:34:06) Micah: Is there any other relation to like if they said we’re collaborating with them. I guess I do see (0:34:12) Al: Yeah, I think they made it clear that it was a collaboration. (0:34:15) Micah: Okay, I because it (0:34:18) Al: I guess what I know, I’m not trying to say that it’s as popular as Stardew, (0:34:21) Al: but it would be like if the Stardew Valley board game came out and they called it (0:34:26) Al: “farming game”. Right? Like, it would just feel weird. (0:34:28) Micah: Right, like my immediate my immediate reaction would be like they’re ripping off (0:34:33) Micah: Stardew Valley not like oh, it’s a Stardew Valley game, but they’re but they’re calling it something else (0:34:34) Al: Yes, exactly. Exactly. Exactly. And there’s nothing that makes it clear on this Kickstarter (0:34:41) Al: page. (0:34:42) Al: This is an official collaboration, but it is. (0:34:44) Micah: And that’s why I was asking well, how were they related to this other than like, you know, but obviously they have cosigned on it because they’re (0:34:53) Micah: Sharing it and like the art, you know, like if it weren’t (0:34:57) Micah: Theirs, they would probably be in litigation with them or something. I’m sure so (0:35:02) Al: Yeah. Oh, absolutely. Like it’s not, it’s not even like, you know, close. (0:35:08) Micah: Yeah, it’s really interesting it’s very it’s a very pretty looking board game like every (0:35:14) Micah: Looks cool that some of the like, you know card effects and stuff look neat (0:35:19) Micah: The the character pieces are really really cute. I like almost want to get in on it just for the the little (0:35:29) Micah: What do you call those little guys from the (0:35:30) Al: You can’t call them meeples anymore. (0:35:33) Micah: You can’t call them meeples anymore no, I did not (0:35:35) Al: Oh, did you not hear this news? (0:35:37) Al: All right. Sidebar. (0:35:38) Al: So Carcassonne have trademarked meeples and they’re suing anybody that uses the name now. (0:35:41) Micah: Uh-huh (0:35:44) Micah: Oh (0:35:46) Al: So let me find out what they… (0:35:46) Micah: That’s (0:35:49) Al: It’s very, it’s very stupid. (0:35:52) Al: What is the name that is that people have kind of agreed they should call it instead? (0:35:59) Al: Oh, apparently it’s not. (0:36:00) Al: Not being trademarked in the US, so maybe they’ll continue, people will just continue (0:36:02) Micah: Oh. (0:36:04) Al: to use the word ‘meeple’ and make their games in the US. (0:36:05) Micah: Yet, at least. (0:36:07) Micah: Obviously, they’re trying, so… (0:36:08) Al: Can’t remember, because there was one in particular, so it’s an EU trademark ‘meeple’, because (0:36:16) Al: Carcassonne are German, and what? (0:36:19) Al: Oh yeah, so this was, so a company was making a game called ‘Meeple Inc’, and they were (0:36:26) Al: sued by Carcassonne, so they’re now calling it ‘Table Inc’. (0:36:30) Micah: Leave it to a, you know, a lawsuit to ruin the fun for her. (0:36:35) Al: I know it’s so like seriously nobody is confusing their game with carcass on (0:36:43) Al: just because it says meeple like come on I can’t see anywhere what the (0:36:46) Micah: but uh what do we call these um meekles because it because meika and the you (0:36:54) Al: which which which pole (0:36:55) Micah: know which pool um we’ll just we’ll call them meeples with the asterisk that it (0:37:03) Micah: spelled MI PLE because because meekah and the you know yeah yeah yeah they’re (0:37:06) Al: It’s my poles. (0:37:09) Al: Oh, meekles, meekles, yeah, okay, right, I get you. (0:37:13) Micah: really cute though they’re I that’s probably my favorite part of this whole (0:37:16) Micah: thing like they’re very cute game pieces and I hope that they don’t get (0:37:22) Micah: sued by Carcassonne (0:37:23) Al: Well they’re not using- I don’t see meeple being written anywhere and I don’t think they’re trying (0:37:27) Al: to like trademark the concept of having a meeple, it’s just the name that they’re (0:37:31) Micah: Not yet, at least, you know, it’s opens the doors, you know, the next thing, the next litigation. (0:37:39) Micah: This is, yeah, this is interesting, though, this is such a like strange thing, like a strange decision. (0:37:46) Micah: Maybe part of it is like that they are working with this team and they want to give them because that team is like working as hard as they are in this game and everything they’re giving all of the, you know, like they’re setting it up in a way. (0:38:01) Micah: So that undigital owns the rights to this without having to like, you know, there being any question about who owns the rights to their game that they’re working on because it’s related to something else. (0:38:14) Al: I’m sure they’ve got, I’m sure they have all their legal things in a row, right? (0:38:17) Al: Like it’s not like they, they launched this, they announced it on the same day. (0:38:22) Al: It looks like on Twitter, like it’s very clearly like done together. (0:38:26) Al: So I, I’m sure they know. (0:38:28) Micah: Oh sure, I just mean that, like, that would be a positive thing, you know, if they had given them the, you know, had them just change the name so that in the future there was no potential for any possible, like, you know, legal issues or something, and they could just claim all of the rights to this board game and the profits and whatever without having to, you know, answer to Chibig or whatever, which would be a cool thing for Chibig to do. (0:38:58) Micah: You know, people will say like, hey, just, this is yours. You make all the money from it. But who knows, I don’t, I don’t know what the decision was to do this, but it’s an interesting (0:39:08) Al: I have fallen into a deep dark hole of trademark stuff now. It looks like (0:39:16) Al: the EU trademark doesn’t actually cover toys and games, but there’s a (0:39:21) Micah: All for meeples? (0:39:23) Al: Germany trademark that does cover them. I’m so confused. (0:39:35) Al: What have I done? Why have I started reading this? (0:39:37) Al: Um… (0:39:38) Al: OK, right, no, we’re done with that, right? Anyway, game, uh, the Kickstarter isn’t live yet. (0:39:46) Al: You can go and save it if you want to get notified when it goes live. Link will be in the show notes. (0:39:51) Al: All right, we have a few new games as well. Uh, so a new My Time At game, My Time At Evershine, (0:39:59) Al: um, is coming out. The Kickstarter is launching sometime this month. You want another My Time game? (0:40:06) Micah: Uh, I am. (0:40:09) Micah: Yes, I do. (0:40:10) Micah: I do, because I think that my time at Portia (0:40:14) Micah: was such a like, what do they call it? (0:40:17) Micah: Bottled lightning or whatever. (0:40:20) Micah: For what it was at that time, which was, you know, (0:40:24) Micah: a time shortly after Stardew Valley is like massive success. (0:40:29) Micah: And shortly before the boom in. (0:40:36) Micah: Farm Sim type, like Life Sim type games, you know. (0:40:41) Micah: And I think that there were a lot of really positive things (0:40:43) Micah: about my time at Portia, but I think my time at Sandrock, (0:40:47) Micah: on the other hand, was not what I would have wanted it to be (0:40:52) Micah: or would have expected. (0:40:53) Micah: And just personally, not for me. (0:40:56) Micah: So I’m interested to see. (0:40:58) Al: Did you play it? Did you play Sandra? (0:41:01) Micah: No, I did not. (0:41:02) Micah: I from listening to (0:41:06) Micah: and watching things and seeing how the game played, and especially after my time at Portia Port, (0:41:12) Al: Yep. (0:41:13) Micah: I made the conscious decision not to, but just because I didn’t think that it was really for me, (0:41:20) Micah: you know? But I’m excited to see, like clearly they’re capable, right? That’s what I’m getting (0:41:26) Micah: at, is like they’re a very capable studio, and they have some really great ideas. I think there (0:41:34) Micah: there were a lot of really awesome ideas (0:41:36) Micah: in my time at Portia had that just maybe weren’t as fleshed out as they could have been (0:41:40) Micah: especially now that we have had this boom of, you know, Farm Sims and Life Sims and stuff (0:41:45) Micah: that have, you know, made a lot of differences in how these games are played and stuff like (0:41:53) Micah: that. (0:41:54) Micah: So I’m excited to see what they can do with more games, like, I’m always interested in (0:42:00) Micah: seeing, you know, a talented developer make new stuff. (0:42:05) Al: Yeah. So, I mean, just looking at some numbers on Steam. Yeah, well, that’s the thing. I (0:42:06) Micah: Um… (0:42:07) Micah: This is also- (0:42:12) Al: mean, we’re interested to see what they continue on and what they don’t. I mean, to me, Sandrock (0:42:16) Al: always looked just like the same game, but slightly more. And I was like, I’m not interested (0:42:20) Al: in that. But the, so looking on Steam, so they had, so they both have very, very positive (0:42:28) Al: reviews. So we’re ignoring Switch, right? The Switch debacle, we’re just ignoring that, (0:42:33) Al: Right? These things happen. (0:42:34) Micah: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. (0:42:35) Al: They should just not. (0:42:40) Al: So Portia had 33,000 reviews, and Sandrock had 20,000 reviews. (0:42:48) Al: But Portia’s alt, 33,000 versus 20,000. (0:42:50) Micah: Wait how many did Portia have? (0:42:53) Micah: That’s so close. That’s way closer than I would have thought. (0:42:57) Al: It’s a… Yeah, but interestingly, there are all-time peaks of concurrent players. (0:43:03) Al: Porsche was 13,000. (0:43:05) Al: 1.3, and Sandrock was 21,000. It was higher. (0:43:10) Micah: Wow, yeah, I mean, people, I think people knew that, (0:43:13) Micah: you know, by the time that Sandrock came out, (0:43:16) Micah: people had already known Portia so well (0:43:19) Micah: and have been like preaching it (0:43:20) Micah: that I guess maybe even beyond what Portia was, (0:43:24) Micah: people were more excited about it or interested in it. (0:43:27) Micah: I don’t know, I remember the conversation (0:43:30) Micah: around my time at Sandrock being like, (0:43:32) Micah: people were very excited about it. (0:43:34) Micah: I think a big part of it for me was that (0:43:36) Micah: I I’m not a like humongous fan (0:43:40) Micah: of the Southwestern American motif motif in like games and I get really (0:43:41) Al: Yeah, fair, fair. (0:43:48) Micah: really bummed out when I get to the point in games where it’s like okay now (0:43:52) Micah: you got to do the desert level and I’m like I just don’t wanna I don’t wanna do (0:43:57) Micah: that and it kind of looked like Porsche but in that setting and with the whole (0:43:58) Al: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. (0:44:02) Micah: the whole game is desert level basically is what it felt like so and it looked (0:44:07) Micah: Like a lot of the say I mean obviously a lot (0:44:10) Micah: more but you know it looked like a lot of the same of what Portia had that I (0:44:15) Micah: was kind of like I’ll just play Portia you know that’s more in my setting (0:44:18) Al: Yeah, you’re still, I mean, you’re still essentially a builder, right? Like, it’s the same core (0:44:20) Micah: that’s more me (0:44:23) Al: loop of building things, which, if you like, that’s good. I really didn’t like, so I’m (0:44:30) Al: obviously not gonna like it when it has the same core mechanic that I didn’t like. (0:44:32) Micah: - Right. (0:44:35) Micah: There is also something that about the character design (0:44:39) Micah: that I didn’t really love in Porsche or Sandrock, (0:44:44) Micah: but I was more like forgiving obviously with Porsche (0:44:47) Micah: ‘cause it was such a, like at the time it was, (0:44:51) Micah: you know, kind of like unique and exciting thing (0:44:54) Micah: where now this is a little bit more common of a game, (0:44:57) Micah: like a game style and stuff like that. (0:44:59) Micah: So, but. (0:45:02) Micah: It’s just, I don’t know. There’s something about the character design that I didn’t really love. (0:45:06) Micah: And I think for the new thing, this new thing, what is it my time at Evershine? (0:45:10) Al: Evershine, yeah. (0:45:10) Micah: The character design looks so different and like, more aged up. Right, right. (0:45:12) Al: Well, so we just have one image to go by, right? Just to point there, like this could (0:45:18) Al: - because if you look at, for example, the original image that was released for - what (0:45:24) Al: was that game you were talking about before? Why have I forgotten the name of it? The one (0:45:28) Al: you’ve bought but not played yet. The farming game. Yeah, it feels a mystery. If you look (0:45:30) Micah: Oh, fields of mystery. (0:45:32) Al: at the original image, that does not look anything like the game. So you can’t rely (0:45:36) Micah: Yes, you’re right. Absolutely right. (0:45:40) Al: on that first initial image. But yes, it does look very different to the actual art (0:45:48) Al: style of Porsche and Sandrock. So maybe that’s going to do something different? I don’t know. (0:45:48) Micah: Mm hmm. And I should say. (0:45:54) Micah: Yeah, I should say contextually, the you know, the looking at the (0:45:59) Micah: the key art illustrations they’ve had for Portia and for Sandrock, (0:46:03) Micah: the character design in those has matched what the character design is. (0:46:08) Micah: Roughly, you know, like proportions and facial, (0:46:11) Micah: you know, facial features and stuff like that. (0:46:13) Micah: So again, yeah, we don’t know. (0:46:16) Micah: There’s only one image. (0:46:17) Micah: We don’t know what the game actually looks like. (0:46:18) Micah: Based on that, contextually, this feels like it’s it’s going to be a little bit (0:46:25) Micah: more aged up, a little bit more mature looking, maybe feeling. (0:46:29) Micah: So that at on its own intrigues me that it’s, you know, kind of taking (0:46:35) Micah: like a little bit more serious tone with this key art. (0:46:39) Micah: So we’ll see. Maybe it’s not. (0:46:39)

Most of us have had the experience of curling up with a cup of tea and a good book, but have you ever tried pairing that book with a bowl of ice cream? If not, we highly recommend it! The podcast team took this episode on the road and visited AL's Ice Cream Shoppe located at 696 Main Street. We combined AL's exciting array of flavors with summer book recommendations. [00:35.000 –> 00:36.000] My name is Cody. [00:36.000 –> 00:37.000] And my name is Bev. [00:37.000 –> 00:41.000] And we’re here today to talk about Cottagecore games. [00:41.000 –> 00:43.000] Woo! [00:43.000 –> 00:45.000] Capybara games. [00:45.000 –> 00:46.000] And spas. [00:46.000 –> 00:47.000] And spas. [00:47.000 –> 00:50.000] There’s actually another Capybara game in the news. It’s crazy. [00:50.000 –> 00:52.000] Capybaras are on the rise. [00:52.000 –> 00:54.000] They are. [00:54.000 –> 00:58.000] As always, transcripts are available in the show notes and on the website. [00:58.000 –> 01:03.000] And, as we’ve already mentioned, we are talking today about the game Capybara Spa. [01:03.000 –> 01:06.000] Which has been on our list for a long time. [01:06.000 –> 01:13.000] It’s just kind of like a small, cute little game made by Cozy Beat Games, who also made Lemon Cake. [01:13.000 –> 01:15.000] Which is very fun. [01:15.000 –> 01:22.000] But before we dive into spas for Capybaras, we have some news. [01:22.000 –> 01:24.000] Actually, a decent amount of news. [01:24.000 –> 01:25.000] Thanks, Al. [01:25.000 –> 01:27.000] No, I’m kidding. [01:27.000 –> 01:30.000] Wait, are we doing what we’re put up to first? [01:30.000 –> 01:35.000] But before we get to the news… [01:35.000 –> 01:37.000] It’s early, farmers. [01:37.000 –> 01:38.000] Farmers, give us a break. [01:38.000 –> 01:40.000] We have some coffee. [01:40.000 –> 01:46.000] I actually considered having it be part of the intro where I’m like, [01:46.000 –> 01:50.000] Good morning, farmers. [01:50.000 –> 01:55.000] That could be after the credits. [01:55.000 –> 01:57.000] It’s true. [01:57.000 –> 02:05.000] Yeah, go to the end of the credits for me, for my goofiness. [02:05.000 –> 02:09.000] Yeah, what are the events? [02:09.000 –> 02:13.000] I love how in the show notes you just have work, work, work, work. [02:13.000 –> 02:15.000] And so I put work, work, work, work as well. [02:15.000 –> 02:18.000] Because I feel like that’s all I’ve been up to. [02:18.000 –> 02:23.000] I have a huge conference next week and stressing out about that. [02:23.000 –> 02:27.000] But I guess what I’m trying to not think about work and trying to [02:27.000 –> 02:31.000] de-stress, I’ve surprisingly have gone back into Clash of Clans for [02:31.000 –> 02:32.000] whatever reason. [02:32.000 –> 02:33.000] I don’t know why. [02:33.000 –> 02:34.000] Wow. [02:34.000 –> 02:36.000] But I’m all in. [02:36.000 –> 02:40.000] I feel like I’ve been building up my town hall. [02:40.000 –> 02:42.000] I got up to a town hall 10. [02:42.000 –> 02:43.000] Now I have a second all to count. [02:43.000 –> 02:45.000] I don’t know why. [02:45.000 –> 02:49.000] So I’ve been doing a lot of that. [02:49.000 –> 02:54.000] I’m occasionally playing, what am I playing? [02:54.000 –> 02:55.000] Oh, goodness. [02:55.000 –> 02:58.000] The one, Cora Island, that one. [02:58.000 –> 02:59.000] Oh, yeah. [02:59.000 –> 03:00.000] Uh-huh. [03:00.000 –> 03:03.000] And I also got Fire Emblem engaged last weekend. [03:03.000 –> 03:09.000] So I’ve been also trying to put some time in a minute a day or so, as [03:09.000 –> 03:11.000] I do in that. [03:11.000 –> 03:12.000] Yeah. [03:12.000 –> 03:14.000] How about you? [03:14.000 –> 03:17.000] Work, work, work, work, work. [03:18.000 –> 03:24.000] So I am about to do my comprehensive exam, which is basically in my [03:24.000 –> 03:27.000] university, it’s different at every university, but at my university in my [03:27.000 –> 03:31.000] department, it’s basically where I stand in front of my committee of five [03:31.000 –> 03:35.000] people and say, this is what I want to do my research on. [03:35.000 –> 03:39.000] And it’s funny because it’s like, here are two, excuse me, here are two [03:39.000 –> 03:43.000] chapters that I’ve already finished. [03:43.000 –> 03:47.000] So you can’t tell me I can’t do that because I already did it. [03:47.000 –> 03:52.000] And then here are two chapters that I have made that I have an idea of [03:52.000 –> 03:53.000] what I’m going to do. [03:53.000 –> 03:56.000] One of them is in progress, so I think if anything, they would just be [03:56.000 –> 04:00.000] like change how you’re asking the questions. [04:00.000 –> 04:03.000] And then the other one is kind of like this offshoot from that. [04:03.000 –> 04:07.000] And so basically the question is like, is that enough? [04:07.000 –> 04:11.000] This is the exam where they are like, wow, look at all the things you’re [04:11.000 –> 04:15.000] doing, but it’s not enough for PhD. [04:15.000 –> 04:22.000] And then you have a chance to like add to it and redo it later. [04:22.000 –> 04:26.000] Or they could just be like, you good, looks great. [04:26.000 –> 04:28.000] Like get her done, you know? [04:28.000 –> 04:30.000] So we’ll see. [04:30.000 –> 04:33.000] But that’s in like a week and a half. [04:33.000 –> 04:37.000] So that’s exciting question mark. [04:37.000 –> 04:42.000] But like after that, I don’t have anything until my defense, which will [04:42.000 –> 04:46.000] be in like October of 2025. [04:46.000 –> 04:52.000] So I literally would just be collecting my insects, identifying them, [04:52.000 –> 04:56.000] going to conferences, writing my papers, like all of that, like getting [04:56.000 –> 05:02.000] all of that stuff done, likely doing any extra chapters that come along [05:02.000 –> 05:07.000] because every single time I collect field work data, I like. [05:07.000 –> 05:11.000] Well, I talked to my, I talked to like my collaborator and my advisor [05:11.000 –> 05:13.000] and I’m like, Oh wow, I found this cool thing. [05:13.000 –> 05:14.000] And they’re like, let’s write a paper about it. [05:14.000 –> 05:17.000] And I’m like, no, please. [05:17.000 –> 05:19.000] So yeah, I’ve been doing that. [05:19.000 –> 05:24.000] I haven’t really been playing games, but I’ve been in like that nostalgic, [05:24.000 –> 05:29.000] like rewatch movie series that you’ve watched a billion times. [05:29.000 –> 05:33.000] I’ve been reading a lot of books lately. [05:33.000 –> 05:39.000] So that’s, that’s kind of my, Oh, I did, I did download like Tetris on my phone. [05:39.000 –> 05:43.000] There’s this Tetris app that you can get on your phone and you earn like [05:43.000 –> 05:49.000] these VIP points and if you get 4 million VIP points, which is like ridiculous. [05:49.000 –> 05:54.000] But if you get 4 million VIP points, you get an eight day cruise to Alaska. [05:54.000 –> 05:55.000] Amazing. [05:55.000 –> 05:56.000] You can like turn them in. [05:56.000 –> 05:58.000] Like you can turn in all these points for like legit things. [05:58.000 –> 06:05.000] Like if you live in, if you live in that one place where people gamble, Vegas. [06:05.000 –> 06:07.000] That one place. [06:07.000 –> 06:12.000] There’s like, you can get like a free night in MGM or, you know, [06:12.000 –> 06:16.000] with a very small amount of points, you can get 15% off your thing [06:16.000 –> 06:17.000] and you don’t ever have to pay. [06:17.000 –> 06:20.000] You just like watch the dumb ads in between a Tetris game. [06:20.000 –> 06:21.000] But like, I don’t care. [06:21.000 –> 06:24.000] I just put my phone down and play with my dog and then I’m like, Oh, cool. [06:24.000 –> 06:25.000] The ad’s done. [06:25.000 –> 06:27.000] Yeah, yeah, exactly. [06:27.000 –> 06:29.000] I’ve been joined with a cat. [06:29.000 –> 06:33.000] So if you hear any purring, that’s her. [06:33.000 –> 06:35.000] I just thought you were purring. [06:35.000 –> 06:36.000] No. [06:36.000 –> 06:37.000] Yes. [06:37.000 –> 06:38.000] Yes. [06:38.000 –> 06:40.000] No, I’m also a cat. [06:40.000 –> 06:41.000] I have it. [06:41.000 –> 06:42.000] I have it. [06:42.000 –> 06:47.000] OK, so we can get into the news. [06:47.000 –> 06:49.000] OK, so first bit of news here. [06:49.000 –> 06:56.000] Everdream Valley is going to release on the switch on June 23rd. [06:57.000 –> 06:58.000] I’m trying to think. [06:58.000 –> 07:02.000] I think that by the time this is out, it’ll be it’ll be up. [07:02.000 –> 07:04.000] You can you can play the game. [07:04.000 –> 07:05.000] You can do the time. [07:05.000 –> 07:07.000] The time is real. [07:07.000 –> 07:08.000] Yes. [07:09.000 –> 07:10.000] This looks super cute. [07:10.000 –> 07:12.000] It’s like a little farming. [07:12.000 –> 07:17.000] I mean, it says like that farming is its main one of its main things. [07:17.000 –> 07:19.000] But you’re like a small child. [07:19.000 –> 07:25.000] The look of the child makes me think that you like is abandoned on this island. [07:25.000 –> 07:29.000] And I’m like, why is he the one doing all of this stuff? [07:29.000 –> 07:33.000] But I feel like this gives me like someone more like vibes. [07:33.000 –> 07:34.000] Uh huh. [07:34.000 –> 07:35.000] OK. [07:35.000 –> 07:40.000] Like just a small child living by herself on a island, taking care of her a little. [07:40.000 –> 07:41.000] Oh, yeah. [07:41.000 –> 07:42.000] That’s what it feels like. [07:42.000 –> 07:44.000] I’m just like, what? [07:44.000 –> 07:45.000] Get it like find parents. [07:45.000 –> 07:47.000] What are you doing? [07:47.000 –> 07:50.000] What an industrious child, though. [07:50.000 –> 07:55.000] Um, I watched the trailer and the beekeeping looks great. [07:55.000 –> 08:05.000] And by that, I mean, it showed it showed the like a really big close up of the hives and it just had bees all over the screen. [08:05.000 –> 08:09.000] Like I was like, yeah, that’s how it feels. [08:09.000 –> 08:13.000] And you collect bugs, which is always fun. [08:13.000 –> 08:14.000] I’m in. [08:14.000 –> 08:17.000] I feel like the name is a little unfortunate. [08:17.000 –> 08:24.000] Like if they came up with this name like two to three years ago and then Dreamlight Valley came out. [08:24.000 –> 08:27.000] Yeah, that’s true. [08:27.000 –> 08:31.000] Also, ever dream valley makes me think that he’s like in a coma. [08:31.000 –> 08:32.000] Oh, my goodness. [08:32.000 –> 08:34.000] And this is all a hallucination. [08:34.000 –> 08:35.000] Yes, that’s exactly what’s happening. [08:35.000 –> 08:36.000] It does. [08:36.000 –> 08:38.000] It should end. [08:38.000 –> 08:41.000] You beat the game and zoom out. [08:41.000 –> 08:43.000] He’s not actually doing like child like labor. [08:43.000 –> 08:44.000] Oh, my gosh. [08:44.000 –> 08:46.000] I mean, better. [08:46.000 –> 08:47.000] No, no, not better. [08:47.000 –> 08:48.000] Not better. [08:48.000 –> 08:51.000] Um, God, we are unhinged. [08:51.000 –> 08:56.000] Okay, so that is ever dream valley coming to switch on the 23rd of June. [08:56.000 –> 08:57.000] The next one is flutter away. [08:57.000 –> 09:00.000] This is capybara game number two. [09:00.000 –> 09:06.000] Yes, capybara game number one will always forever in our hearts be capybara spa. [09:06.000 –> 09:23.000] Um, but flutter away is quote pulled this from the steam enjoy the serenity of the Amazon rainforest and this cozy short nature exploration game as a butterfly researcher on a five day camping trip explored nearby tracks take photos me animal friends and journal journal [09:23.000 –> 09:36.000] the discoveries found along the way, and quote, if you eagle eyed eagle eared listeners could hear me pause after a butterfly research. [09:36.000 –> 09:42.000] As I like was like, I know I saw this on the which McCall at the wholesome game. [09:43.000 –> 09:53.000] And I was like, I need to be a researcher in my virtual life, as well as well I’m not research IRL but I need. [09:53.000 –> 10:06.000] So I’m here for it. But like, it looked so cool because like you put a stick out that I’m assuming has some kind of like thing that attracts butterflies on it and like nectar or something. [10:06.000 –> 10:13.000] And then you have to like pull it really really slowly towards you if you pull it too fast and they’re like what the heck and they like fly away. [10:13.000 –> 10:21.000] But you’re basically like what from the trailer it looked like you’re trying to figure out like the diversity of butterflies in this area. [10:21.000 –> 10:26.000] And you and you have a capybara friend. [10:27.000 –> 10:28.000] Okay. [10:28.000 –> 10:46.000] I’m speaking of capybaras I just remember this. I saw a video yesterday that said that capybaras can swim five kilometers an hour underwater, like, they literally just like walk along the bottom of me or whatever and they just like kick off and zoom by you it’s Holy Holy [10:46.000 –> 10:57.000] Hekaru. They are very, very fast little sprightly things that are very fast little rodents, or big rodents, big rodents, biggest rodents Yes, correct. [10:57.000 –> 11:09.000] Um, I don’t think that they’re going to be swimming in this game but flutter away releases on steam and switch on the third of August, maybe they will be flying in this game. [11:09.000 –> 11:12.000] Man flutter away on switch. [11:12.000 –> 11:15.000] Ow. [11:15.000 –> 11:22.000] Let me cover the motherling game. Um, are we just going to cover like all the research like games. [11:22.000 –> 11:34.000] I feel like we’re obligated. I feel like we are, and I’m not not upset about that. I’m not either, um, a research game that I don’t feel obligated transitions on point. [11:34.000 –> 11:40.000] Parkasaurus prehistoric wonders DLC. So I think we’ve already covered Parkasaurus on the pod. [11:40.000 –> 11:55.000] So this is just a DLC and it’s out now and it just gives you 10 new animals and the animals are the American lion mammoth saber tooth mega theorem, Eastern Puma giant capybara Oh my gosh, I didn’t even goodness. [11:55.000 –> 11:57.000] They’re everywhere. [11:57.000 –> 12:01.000] Year of copy bar. [12:01.000 –> 12:04.000] Name, that’s gonna be the title of the year. [12:04.000 –> 12:07.000] Yes. [12:07.000 –> 12:16.000] Uh, short faced bear dodo direwolf and dwarf pronghorn. So they looked really dumb. [12:16.000 –> 12:21.000] I mean, not like the game did not make them dumb. [12:21.000 –> 12:24.000] They’re just dumb. [12:24.000 –> 12:31.000] As the owner of two chickens I feel like I can very much say confidently this is a dumb bird. [12:31.000 –> 12:33.000] Yeah. [12:33.000 –> 12:39.000] So yeah, if you have Parkasaurus or if you’ve been wanting a dodo and Parkasaurus. [12:39.000 –> 12:44.000] And that’s why you haven’t played it. Do it now. Good. [12:44.000 –> 12:47.000] Okay, light your frontier. [12:47.000 –> 12:55.000] Um, I, I like. Okay, I guess let’s just let’s take a look under the hood. [12:55.000 –> 12:57.000] Cody. [12:57.000 –> 13:00.000] I don’t remember games. [13:01.000 –> 13:05.000] I’m gonna record this podcast and I’m out. [13:05.000 –> 13:11.000] All that knowledge is gone. So every time there’s a news article about a game. [13:11.000 –> 13:24.000] I like the night before or right before whatever I put like these little blurbs of what they are and for this one last night I wrote Ark survival evolved but you have mech suits. [13:24.000 –> 13:29.000] I don’t really know that you’re doing your homework, because I am not. [13:29.000 –> 13:37.000] I just like to know what I’m talking about, but, um, I can’t, I’m not good at riffing I feel like when I riff and like I go rogue. [13:37.000 –> 13:45.000] I don’t know. I’m just at the stage of like, I don’t care anymore. I’m just flying by the seat of my pants. [13:45.000 –> 13:49.000] The listeners love you anyway so. [13:49.000 –> 13:56.000] Whereas my anxiety is like they will hate you. [13:56.000 –> 14:05.000] So yeah, that was my note for light your frontiers Ark survival, but you have mech suits because that’s what it looks like he’s like mech suits. [14:05.000 –> 14:10.000] And they have updated the release window for this game and it’s coming early 2024. [14:10.000 –> 14:22.000] I’m like, intrigue I kind of don’t like the first person like aspect of it and it’s weird to do so in a forum but yeah, this also gives me a slime rancher like but like steampunk vibes. [14:22.000 –> 14:32.000] And that’s also a game that I want to play so who knows maybe I will. It’s just so interesting that like, because you can use the suits to like farm instead of him remember. [14:32.000 –> 14:46.000] So it’s like, yeah, it feels like fulfills people’s Gundam desire. Exactly like I want to like have a cottagecore like vibe, but I want to shoot water out of my gun. [14:46.000 –> 14:59.000] And then if you, I don’t know if this happens in this game or not but if you if you’re watering your plants and you have your water gun. And then a baddie is coming for your crops, you can go. [14:59.000 –> 15:02.000] And then switch to your regular gun. [15:02.000 –> 15:04.000] And then you go. [15:04.000 –> 15:07.000] That’s what happens in the comic ops. [15:07.000 –> 15:11.000] Which is a stress. Well, with that sound effect. Oh my god. [15:11.000 –> 15:20.000] Well, no, but okay good. Your, your water is also your weapon. I thought it was original. [15:20.000 –> 15:29.000] The sound effect was supposed to be the water gun going back in the, in the arm and then the real gun coming out. Beautiful. I love it. It was so good. [15:29.000 –> 15:32.000] Thanks. [15:32.000 –> 15:36.000] Next up we have Mossfield origins. [15:36.000 –> 15:49.000] So quote. This is a small cozy community builder where all buildings are based on the same foundation. Take your time build a sustainable community for your residents, sustainable community for your residents in this relaxing game with no time pressure [15:49.000 –> 15:51.000] or external forces. [15:51.000 –> 15:57.000] Yeah, upgrade foundations via tech tree to redefine and refactor your space. [15:57.000 –> 16:07.000] Um, let me tell you, that’s the end quote. Let me tell you, so as someone with ADHD I need time pressure. [16:07.000 –> 16:22.000] Or else nothing’s getting done. I know I maybe that’s something we’ll talk about where we actually get into the game but yeah, I also feel that, but also at the same time, I, it’s like, like I want it but also I don’t because stress. [16:22.000 –> 16:34.000] Yeah, but I guess it depends on how they like roll it out like if it’s like starting like yes there is time pressure but I’m not stressed out about it. So, yeah, gotta do it right. [16:34.000 –> 16:37.000] It looks really cute. [16:37.000 –> 16:45.000] The animation style looks really interesting and I really like I don’t really like the sepia tones. [16:46.000 –> 16:52.000] Okay, cool. Mm hmm. Like it’s very other like worldly and. [16:52.000 –> 16:55.000] That’s true. Yeah, yeah, sorry. [16:55.000 –> 17:02.000] Are you like on like a different planet like you’re kind of looks like you’re wearing a space suit, space suit. [17:02.000 –> 17:06.000] I’m assuming that’s why it’s like a weird like different environment. [17:06.000 –> 17:09.000] It’s just a different atmosphere, I don’t know. [17:09.000 –> 17:18.000] But I can, I feel like I could probably get into this like I’m not in a very creative space right now so I don’t want to have to figure out where to put buildings. [17:18.000 –> 17:22.000] I’m very anti like creativity in my game right now. Yeah. [17:22.000 –> 17:29.000] So I could see me not wanting to play that but at the same time, I also enjoy like city building so we’ll see. Yeah. [17:29.000 –> 17:34.000] Yeah, we’ll see. I, that’ll be a you game. [17:35.000 –> 17:42.000] So the roadmap and the release date are quote unquote coming soon. Love that, love that for us. [17:42.000 –> 17:49.000] But we’ll get more information right now. One blurb from their, gosh, what is this their blog. [17:49.000 –> 17:54.000] All events Mossfield Origins, I think this is a blog. [17:54.000 –> 18:01.000] Quote one of the artistic goals of Mossfield Origins is to reflect a healthier relationship that’s possible between humans and the world we live on. [18:01.000 –> 18:06.000] Worlds. Oh, worlds. Okay, confirmed. Yikes. Okay. [18:06.000 –> 18:12.000] We live on depicting a more sustainable approach to life and our habitation. [18:12.000 –> 18:23.000] So, um, yeah, I think it. The vibe is right but I need, I need someone telling me what to do. Yeah, or else isn’t it she not getting done so. [18:23.000 –> 18:29.000] Hopefully they have a really good quest system because that. Oh, if they have achievements. Yeah, yeah, exactly. [18:29.000 –> 18:37.000] Then you have goals. Like if it’s just like go in there and like mine Minecraft and like no, no, no thank you. [18:37.000 –> 18:47.000] Every time I play Minecraft, I literally do the exact same thing and that is go down to the, well, it used to be go down to level 11 but now there’s negative levels. [18:47.000 –> 18:57.000] Oh no. So I go down to like negative 40 or something like that and I just make a strip mine and put everything in, in chests. [18:57.000 –> 19:02.000] And so they organize chests. They are organized. [19:02.000 –> 19:07.000] So everyone that’s playing with me because like I play on these, these like community servers when I do. [19:07.000 –> 19:19.000] And so that they, they can be like, oh wow look a chest that has four stacks of diamonds. Cool. And I’m just like down there with my diamond pickaxe. Just doing that. [19:19.000 –> 19:23.000] That’s all I want to do. [19:23.000 –> 19:24.000] Okay. [19:24.000 –> 19:30.000] Next, Koa and the five pirates of Mara. Speaking of Summer and Mara. [19:30.000 –> 19:35.000] I wrote that this looks like a cute slash fun puzzle platformer. [19:35.000 –> 19:48.000] I’m excited. Is that what quite. Yeah, I think that it’s by Chibi. So same world as Summer Mara is in the same universe, but they, I guess, are deciding to branch out a little bit and they’re, I don’t know, type of game, I guess. [19:48.000 –> 19:57.000] So it is definitely a like 3d platformer and it just looks so cute and like getting to play as like Koa. [19:57.000 –> 20:05.000] I will just love and I do. It’s been so long since I’ve done a platformer because I feel like I got like tired of Mario for whatever reason. [20:05.000 –> 20:13.000] So maybe this will like get me back into like wanting to do platformers because it is so cute. It looks so bright. It just looks really good. [20:13.000 –> 20:21.000] I’m excited. And I did pack it. So excited just to get it. Well, good for you because it releases on July 27. [20:21.000 –> 20:31.000] So that is when it will be available to you. Beautiful. Super awesome. Speaking, I’m going to take a small sign here. Speaking of platformers, have you played Hollow Knight? [20:31.000 –> 20:40.000] Yes. Oh, so good. I have not like, I feel like finished the story or like I’m probably like 75% of the way through. [20:40.000 –> 20:48.000] But I also like get through like various like kind of like Stardew where I’m like, OK, I kind of want to get back into this. Let me start playing it again. [20:48.000 –> 20:55.000] But yes, love, love, love Hollow Knight. When I saw the trailer for Koa, I was like, oh, it’s a platformer. [20:55.000 –> 21:02.000] And then I like had a little bit of like anxiety and I was like, I’m not ready. [21:02.000 –> 21:06.000] If it’s Hollow Knight, then definitely not ready. I don’t think it’s going to be like Hollow Knight. [21:06.000 –> 21:12.000] I don’t know. I’m just too scared of platformers in general. [21:12.000 –> 21:17.000] Hollow Knight got me and I didn’t even get that far. It gets so hard real quick. [21:18.000 –> 21:28.000] I mean, I guess I’ve I’ve beat the game, but like my partner has done like the path of pain and literally a thing. [21:28.000 –> 21:34.000] And it’s just like it’s throwing all of the bad and all of the difficulty at you. [21:34.000 –> 21:39.000] And I’m like, I’m not doing that. It just sounds like stress. I watched like people stream that. [21:40.000 –> 21:47.000] I’m like, I’m not here for that. Like, I want it so I can like 100 percent the game or 120 percent it or whatever. [21:47.000 –> 21:52.000] But also, I’m never going to beat it. And it’s so frustrating. So no, thank you. [21:52.000 –> 22:00.000] Yep. That small aside, I’m trying to think of a nope, there’s no transition. [22:00.000 –> 22:07.000] Garden Galaxy, Garden Galaxy. [22:07.000 –> 22:16.000] Yeah, you don’t do that in this game. So, quote, discover, collect and organize to create your own unique garden in this relaxing idol slash creative sandbox. [22:16.000 –> 22:20.000] And I wrote, I have no idea how to describe this game. [22:20.000 –> 22:26.000] Yeah, it gives me like match madness vibes, like those matching games. [22:26.000 –> 22:32.000] But it’s not that at all. It’s like, I mean, I guess you do kind of like put you like match. [22:32.000 –> 22:37.000] It looks like there’s something there’s like this container that you can put things into. [22:37.000 –> 22:44.000] And then it pops out a randomly generated other things. Yeah, I don’t quite understand whatever that pot is. [22:44.000 –> 22:49.000] No, but it gives me like like city builder. Yeah. Vibes just in a garden sense. [22:49.000 –> 22:56.000] And I feel like I remember playing a phone game like this. That was also an idol game for just growing flowers. [22:56.000 –> 23:02.000] And it has like the same art style and like cubes, like sections, I guess. I don’t know. [23:02.000 –> 23:11.000] But like I said, I’m very anti-creative right now. And if you don’t tell me where to put things, I’m not going to put anything. [23:11.000 –> 23:16.000] Yeah, but this is like if you really enjoy being creative and like, yeah, exactly. [23:16.000 –> 23:24.000] Like if your favorite thing about Animal Crossing New Horizons was designing your island, you’re going to love this game. [23:24.000 –> 23:31.000] Because it’s just like it’s just that it’s just that and terraforming your your own galaxy. [23:31.000 –> 23:36.000] You’re playing God in this galaxy and just building. It looks it looks really cute. [23:36.000 –> 23:41.000] I’m not going to lie, but it’s just not like this is something that I would watch someone else play. [23:41.000 –> 23:48.000] Yeah. And maybe maybe at some point when I’m not feeling so tired and so anti-creativity, I will get into this. [23:48.000 –> 23:54.000] Bev, when you’re when? I’m hoping there will be a time when I’m not tired. [23:54.000 –> 23:59.000] Yeah, no, same. So we’ll see. That’s I just have been like joking about that myself. [23:59.000 –> 24:06.000] But like, you know, when I have free time. [24:06.000 –> 24:14.000] When I’m in the not so distant future, when this is all done in October 2025. [24:14.000 –> 24:19.000] Yeah. Yes. Catch me in January 2026. [24:19.000 –> 24:25.000] Yeah. So basically this there’s a summer update to this game coming out in June. [24:25.000 –> 24:29.000] This game’s already out, so you can already play it right now. [24:29.000 –> 24:36.000] But there’s a summer update and one of the new sets like they literally just put here the preview of one of the new sets. [24:36.000 –> 24:41.000] And it’s like a little island, kind of like a beachy. [24:41.000 –> 24:48.000] I guess it’s more like a deserted island theme now that I’m looking at it because it’s got like it’s got like a message in a bottle. [24:48.000 –> 24:55.000] Oh, wow. And like palm trees and stuff. So if you already have a game, new stuff is a coming. [24:55.000 –> 25:00.000] If you do not have that game, but this sounds intriguing, new stuff will be coming soon. [25:00.000 –> 25:07.000] So dive in now. The next game is we’re getting there. [25:07.000 –> 25:13.000] Y’all steamworld build such a weird name quote in steamworld build. [25:13.000 –> 25:18.000] You must escape a dying planet by building a mining town to dig up vital long lost technology. [25:18.000 –> 25:25.000] Meet the ever growing needs of your citizens, trade resources and defend your mine from the creatures that lurk below. [25:25.000 –> 25:31.000] End quote. That is giving Factorio vibes. It is. [25:31.000 –> 25:37.000] Actually, I don’t know. It’s the one where like you crash land on a planet. [25:37.000 –> 25:47.000] I think it’s Factorio because you crash on a planet and you’re just like mining the crap out of the planet to build your your thing back up. [25:47.000 –> 25:53.000] Eventually, these like creatures come at you and you’re just like, kill them. [25:53.000 –> 25:56.000] Oh, my goodness. Yeah, it’s Factorio. [25:56.000 –> 26:00.000] But yeah, it’s giving that. But the trailer. Did you watch the trailer? [26:00.000 –> 26:07.000] I have not, but I’ve I’ve heard about this game of seed. I think we talked about it on a like previous game or game previous episode. [26:07.000 –> 26:18.000] And I am excited by it. Like, I like the premise and like I enjoy mining and this is essentially what you’re doing. [26:18.000 –> 26:23.000] So I think I would enjoy this. And this also sounds like you’re like Minecraft like life. [26:24.000 –> 26:26.000] Until you can’t anymore. [26:26.000 –> 26:34.000] Like the gameplay trailer makes it look almost like like city skylines, like you have a city that you’re managing. [26:34.000 –> 26:43.000] And then there’s also like, I guess this might be minecarts that I’m looking at in this thing, but it looks like there’s like roller coasters. [26:43.000 –> 26:46.000] So it’s like a little roller coaster tycoon. Oh, my gosh, I forgot. [26:46.000 –> 26:59.000] If you go to 24 is for you and for anyone, if you go to 24 seconds into the trailer, there’s a there’s a what is that called? [26:59.000 –> 27:04.000] A drive through theater. A drive in. [27:04.000 –> 27:15.000] And there’s like these it’s all rusty in the image on the screen just looks like a robot is like about to have a showdown in the middle of the town in front of the tavern. [27:15.000 –> 27:19.000] And like he’s got his hand on his gun and his other guys, but like all you can see is the robot’s face. [27:19.000 –> 27:23.000] That’s just like what it’s evoking. But yes, drive in theater. [27:23.000 –> 27:38.000] So like this game just has a lot. But like to me, if I was the person trying to escape the dying planet partway through this, I would be like, maybe I don’t want just leave the planet. [27:38.000 –> 27:44.000] I mean, do we want to look at the beauty of that of that drive in theater and the roller coasters? [27:44.000 –> 27:51.000] Maybe we just fix up the planet that we have. Anyway, it looks really cute. [27:51.000 –> 27:57.000] I’m excited. And the news is that there’s a new trailer. [27:57.000 –> 28:04.000] That’s the news. So I definitely watch the trailer. It’s really cute, especially 24 seconds in. [28:04.000 –> 28:10.000] Tell me, listeners, what you think is happening in that movie at that drive in. [28:10.000 –> 28:13.000] It’s definitely a Western. OK, because it feels like a Western. [28:13.000 –> 28:17.000] It’s definitely a Western with the hot and the squidty eyes. And the squidty eyes. [28:17.000 –> 28:23.000] OK, next, Menechos Night Market. [28:23.000 –> 28:28.000] That’s me trying to be really, really excited, but also not too loud. [28:28.000 –> 28:35.000] I don’t want to blow out the speaker. So Menechos Night Market, this game, I did not have to look up because I know what I’m talking about. [28:35.000 –> 28:42.000] Exactly. The news here is that it is coming to Game Pass on its release. [28:42.000 –> 28:48.000] And of course, its release is September 26th, which is like the release for a billion games. [28:48.000 –> 28:52.000] There’s like four games that we cover that are all coming out on this day. [28:52.000 –> 29:01.000] Too many games. Pick another day. I mean, they can pick another day because whatever day Menechos Night Market comes out on is going to get our attention. [29:01.000 –> 29:06.000] True. Very true. So all the other games need to step off September 26th. [29:06.000 –> 29:10.000] Yeah, I feel like I need a Game Pass, but also I know I’m just going to buy this game. [29:10.000 –> 29:20.000] So, yeah, I mean, this is good news. Like if there if if you have been thinking about Menechos Night Market and every time you hear us talking about it, you’re like, oh, my gosh, I want a game. [29:20.000 –> 29:23.000] And you have Game Pass. That means you don’t have to buy it, right? [29:23.000 –> 29:30.000] Like you don’t have to put the money down because it’ll be on the for freezies, quote unquote. [29:30.000 –> 29:35.000] I think you have to pay for a Game Pass every month. Yeah, like ten dollars a month or something like that. [29:35.000 –> 29:45.000] So it’s not terrible. It’s only ten dollars. Which is why I was like, maybe I get it for Dreamlight Ballet because I want to play this game, but I don’t want to pay twenty five dollars for a free to play game. [29:45.000 –> 29:50.000] But also, I’m still paying whatever. It’s another subscription. [29:50.000 –> 29:53.000] Nope, don’t need it. OK, don’t need it. Exactly. [29:53.000 –> 30:02.000] If there’s like a specific game that I want to try, but don’t want to commit to, like I suppose Dreamlight Ballet, then I suppose it might be worth it for only like like a month. [30:02.000 –> 30:09.000] Like I definitely would pay more than ten dollars per an entire month if I bought a game. [30:09.000 –> 30:14.000] But whatever. Well, Bev, a great time, a great time to try Game Pass would be in September. [30:14.000 –> 30:25.000] Exactly. Because then you could try you could like if you do it early September, then you could play Dreamlight Ballet until Moneko’s Night Market came out and then swap over. [30:25.000 –> 30:31.000] Love that. That’s good planning, too. Maybe I will do that. [30:31.000 –> 30:36.000] Because I can plan for ten dollars in September. Right. Right. Yeah. [30:36.000 –> 30:42.000] I can do that. I also think that farming simulators on Game Pass. Oh, no. [30:42.000 –> 30:49.000] And I need to be playing that. Spoiler alert for future episodes. [30:49.000 –> 30:56.000] Spirit tea. Just going to transition very poorly. [30:56.000 –> 31:05.000] Spirit tea. So this is a quote from Al. Beta slash alpha slash meh. [31:05.000 –> 31:13.000] Out on Wednesday. So I believe that that means that it’s like Wednesday, like the day after the podcast comes out or the day of that. [31:13.000 –> 31:21.000] That’s unclear, Al. You put dates in the show notes. Wow. We’re just coming out all over the place because he then wrote might include all content. [31:21.000 –> 31:34.000] All content might not. Who even knows? And then I tried to click on the link and I sassily wrote would love to be able to read the update, but it’s only viewable by backers, Al. [31:34.000 –> 31:42.000] And that was where I was going to leave it. But y’all, he actually I didn’t like tag him or anything. He just looked at my notes and then he left. [31:42.000 –> 31:51.000] Yeah, he saw. Yeah. So he commented on that. What did he say? Not sure why I’m being blamed for this. Yeah. [31:51.000 –> 32:03.000] And then he took screenshots. Just copy paste the whole thing in here next time, Al. I mean, no, I wanted to give him crap. And then he ruined it. [32:03.000 –> 32:12.000] You still gave him crap. And then he gave you crap back. Yeah, it’s true. We do be ribbing each other. You’re like poking fun at each other. [32:12.000 –> 32:21.000] So, yeah, he said, let’s see, this says because this is I didn’t look at this last night. It wasn’t available to me. [32:21.000 –> 32:28.000] The developer says I’ve just finished a few of the crucial items and now we’re pretty much ready to start the public beta. [32:28.000 –> 32:36.000] Oh, I was about to say what is a public beta? And wouldn’t you know it? The next sentence. What is the public beta? Thank you. [32:36.000 –> 32:43.000] It’s essentially a chance to play the game early. I believe the beta will contain only the first two seasons of your first year in the town. [32:43.000 –> 32:50.000] However, there’s been talk of potential access to the full game as well. How do you not know? How do you? Yeah. [32:50.000 –> 32:54.000] So maybe it is. It’s not like the plan. [32:54.000 –> 32:58.000] I believe maybe maybe they just don’t have a lot of confidence. [32:58.000 –> 33:05.000] I also I also start with like I I think before things that I know for a fact, so it might just be like a confidence thing. [33:05.000 –> 33:13.000] So I hope that they will know what the beta contains and will maybe just plan to change it later with full access. [33:13.000 –> 33:19.000] I don’t know. Maybe it’ll be like a surprise, like a special surprise of like, oh, you get more. [33:19.000 –> 33:25.000] And you get a full game and you get a full game. [33:25.000 –> 33:31.000] Sorry, I’m tired. Yeah. And then there’s a secret. [33:31.000 –> 33:37.000] The next the next two paragraphs end up saying, oh, and please keep this to yourself. [33:37.000 –> 33:42.000] So I’m not going to say that. But Spirit Tea is done. So this is what they say. [33:42.000 –> 33:47.000] Anyways, the game is done, but the polishing isn’t done. So, yeah. [33:47.000 –> 33:52.000] Well, the secret is that, nope, that they’re announcing the beta for something else. [33:52.000 –> 33:56.000] That’s a secret. That’s for something else. Oh, is it? I can’t read. [33:56.000 –> 34:01.000] It’s too early. A secret. OK, I don’t know who that was. [34:01.000 –> 34:06.000] I just assumed it was the same person. No, I think they’re talking about two games here. [34:06.000 –> 34:11.000] Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. That’s that’s not clear at all. [34:11.000 –> 34:14.000] This dev needs to make that clear. This is a new game we’re talking about. [34:14.000 –> 34:21.000] This is also it’s just so unclear. I mean, like Dan, Dan, Dan. [34:21.000 –> 34:28.000] Thank you for staying for like communicating to people and like having these, you know, semi regular updates. [34:28.000 –> 34:32.000] But also, this is not clear. No, Dan’s probably also overworked. [34:32.000 –> 34:36.000] They’re probably submit this up, like in the middle of the night, like, oh, it’s out. [34:36.000 –> 34:41.000] OK, I’m done. Good night. Oh, my gosh. Dan is about to have a new baby. [34:41.000 –> 34:44.000] Oh, yeah. That’s why Dan is so tired. That makes sense. [34:44.000 –> 34:48.000] All is forgiven, Dan. Enjoy your baby. [34:48.000 –> 34:54.000] We will enjoy the game whenever she is 1.0, not this public beta. [34:54.000 –> 34:59.000] I’m super excited. OK, cool. [34:59.000 –> 35:04.000] Next. Only three more. OK, Spirit Tea. [35:04.000 –> 35:08.000] No, I already did that. Sprout Valley. [35:08.000 –> 35:11.000] It’s another Kickstarter, so valid. Oh, my gosh. [35:11.000 –> 35:18.000] OK. Oh, what? My laptop or my computer was doing some weird things. [35:18.000 –> 35:25.000] Sprout Valley, quote, a simple casual game. What a simple. [35:25.000 –> 35:28.000] A simple casual game about harvesting and gathering resources. That’s legit. [35:28.000 –> 35:33.000] Like that is what they that’s what the Kickstarter says. [35:33.000 –> 35:37.000] Oh, we’ve talked about this because it’s what the 1.0 is out now. [35:37.000 –> 35:44.000] And then Al says, although not sure what this means, because apparently it is releasing in July and this version is 1.0 of the demo. [35:44.000 –> 35:51.000] Or I’m very confused. And by I’m I mean, Al is very confused, but I’m also very confused. [35:51.000 –> 36:00.000] 1.0, but like still in beta. So like still then it’s not 1.0 Bev. [36:01.000 –> 36:06.000] I don’t know. I could see them be like, this is 1.0 and we expect to have bugs. [36:06.000 –> 36:11.000] So 1.6 will be actually the full release. I don’t know. I don’t understand. [36:11.000 –> 36:18.000] They need a standard. The industry needs to standardize this whole process because it’s ridiculous. [36:18.000 –> 36:24.000] It looks like it. So you can play this on itch.io. [36:24.000 –> 36:29.000] But they have a Switch version in the process. They just have to get it approved by Nintendo, [36:29.000 –> 36:34.000] which a shout out to Elle from Apico. [36:34.000 –> 36:39.000] I now have kind of an insider’s view into like how this stuff happens. [36:39.000 –> 36:51.000] Awesome. And they can they can take a long time and then slap you with the ESRB rating because you have meat in your game. [36:53.000 –> 36:55.000] Because you have meat in your game? [36:55.000 –> 37:00.000] Oh my gosh. So Apico, they have meat. Well, it’s Apicola. [37:00.000 –> 37:03.000] It was mead because you’re making mead. Yeah. [37:03.000 –> 37:08.000] And they didn’t call it mead. I think they did at first. Oh, maybe they didn’t. [37:08.000 –> 37:13.000] I don’t remember. But it was it’s very clearly you’re brewing. [37:13.000 –> 37:20.000] You put honey into a brewing thing. And then if you don’t understand the brewing process of me, then maybe don’t. [37:20.000 –> 37:23.000] But the ESRB was like you are gratified. [37:23.000 –> 37:31.000] You’re like showing alcohol in a positive light because you get these like powers from drinking this alcohol. [37:31.000 –> 37:38.000] And so they like slapped him with a mature rating. Apico, Apico with a mature rating. Ridiculous. [37:38.000 –> 37:42.000] So, yeah, that’s that’s just I don’t think that was Nintendo. That was the ESRB. [37:42.000 –> 37:48.000] So like Sprout or not. Yeah. Sprout Valley. Take your time getting the Switch version out. We get it. [37:49.000 –> 37:56.000] We get it. Also, did you hear? OK, sorry. Future versions of Sprout Valley to come on the Apico train. [37:56.000 –> 38:03.000] Did you hear that there was a bug that was because of me? What? No. [38:03.000 –> 38:11.000] It like made people’s game crash. Just like your existence in the game was just like so magical. [38:11.000 –> 38:14.000] There was something. Gosh, I don’t even remember. [38:14.000 –> 38:19.000] I so I was like talking to Elle. I’m going to pull up my my chat with Elle. [38:19.000 –> 38:28.000] He just one day reached out to me and he was like, I need you to know that you’ve caused me such a headache on Switch because there’s a crash that happens only after people speak to you. [38:31.000 –> 38:37.000] It was called like the Cody crash or the solitary bee crash, but he called it the Cody crash and I retweeted it. [38:37.000 –> 38:42.000] I was like, where do I put on my CV that my bee knowledge crashed a video game? [38:46.000 –> 38:55.000] In your fun notes, more information about me that’s not relevant to my experience, but it’s fun to know. [38:55.000 –> 39:01.000] The knowledge in my brain about bees makes people’s games crash. OK. Amazing. [39:01.000 –> 39:05.000] That definitely should go on your CV, please. Oh, we’ve had so many side notes. [39:05.000 –> 39:09.000] I mean, that’s an accomplishment all by itself. The fact that you’re in a bee game, just saying. [39:09.000 –> 39:15.000] Yeah, that was that was a weird a weird what a crazy random happenstance. [39:15.000 –> 39:21.000] I’m pretty sure it has to do with this podcast because like Elle listened to this podcast and met me from from here. [39:21.000 –> 39:26.000] And then he asked me for like a knowledge. [39:26.000 –> 39:30.000] Yeah, bee knowledge. I was going to say advice and I was like, that was what it was. [39:30.000 –> 39:40.000] It was like bee knowledge. And then at near the end of like me giving him bee knowledge, like once a month or whatever it was, like very, very infrequently. [39:40.000 –> 39:45.000] He was just like, oh, also, I’m putting you in the game. And I was like, what? Love it. [39:45.000 –> 39:52.000] Love it. OK. That needs to go to your CV. I feel like if I could say I’m the co-founder of a Quage team, I feel like you need it. [39:53.000 –> 39:58.000] But you’re you’re in a bee game. Oh, my gosh. Yeah, for sure. [39:58.000 –> 40:08.000] OK. Oh, what am I? I am messing things up on this. OK. 33 Immortals. [40:08.000 –> 40:14.000] So my here’s my quote here. Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh. [40:14.000 –> 40:22.000] And then I quote 33 Immortals. Yeah. 33 Immortals is a co-op action roguelike for 33 players. [40:22.000 –> 40:26.000] Pick up Thunder Lotus. Yeah. Yeah. Spiritfarer. [40:26.000 –> 40:33.000] Yeah. The people who made Spiritfarer. Pick up and raid, cooperate to survive hordes of monsters and rise above the Almighty. [40:33.000 –> 40:37.000] Yeah. So this is made by Thunder Lotus is the people who made Spiritfarer. [40:37.000 –> 40:42.000] Al, this link is not helpful. I need to know what this game is. [40:42.000 –> 40:51.000] I think it’s like newly announced. So it’s it makes sense that the link is not helpful because that’s all there is. [40:51.000 –> 40:59.000] And oh, oh, it kind of looks like like to me, it looks like Diablo, maybe. [40:59.000 –> 41:05.000] I don’t know. I’m getting like Hades vibes as well. OK, I’ve not played Hades, so it’s so good. [41:05.000 –> 41:11.000] But yeah, I mean, you don’t have to have 33 people, but you can. [41:11.000 –> 41:16.000] That sounds amazing. And I kind of want the chaos of 33 people. [41:16.000 –> 41:21.000] It’s going to remind me of my World of Warcraft 40 man days. [41:21.000 –> 41:26.000] The horror of trying to keep all those chickens in a row. [41:26.000 –> 41:34.000] Uh huh. But yeah, you you can you like dungeon crawl and you are like fighting things. [41:34.000 –> 41:39.000] And this is like an MMO without actually being an MMO. It looks really good. [41:39.000 –> 41:44.000] Yeah, it looks really good. And of course, Spiritfarer people. So Spiritfarer and like the art. [41:44.000 –> 41:51.000] We know the animations like fantastic. We know the art’s fantastic. So I’m very excited to hear about this. [41:51.000 –> 41:59.000] Yeah. And I just hope it’s kind of like a monster hunter, like like waiting room where you could just join random groups. [41:59.000 –> 42:09.000] Yeah, I don’t know. 33 players

Codey and Bev talk about Research Story Timings 00:00:00: Theme Tune 00:00:30: Intro 00:02:23: What Have We Been Up To 00:14:40: News 00:26:11: Research Story 01:18:02: Outro Links Disney Dreamlight Valley Pride of the Valley Update Mika and the Witch’s Mountain Trailer Coral Island Summer Update Rune Factory 3S US Special Edition Research Story on Steam Contact Al on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheScotBot Al on Mastodon: https://mastodon.scot/@TheScotBot Email Us: https://harvestseason.club/contact/ Transcript [00:00.000 –> 00:30.000] music [00:30.000 –> 00:35.000] Hello farmers and welcome to another episode of the harvest season. [00:35.000 –> 00:40.000] My name is Cody and my name is Bev and we’re here today to talk about cottage core [00:40.000 –> 00:44.000] games. [00:44.000 –> 00:49.000] What so so we we say hello farmers because it used to be only a [00:49.000 –> 00:54.000] farming podcast but now we’re like rebranding. So what do we say like hello cottage core [00:54.000 –> 00:59.000] workers. This is a question. That’s a great question. [00:59.000 –> 01:04.000] Listeners right in. Join the slack and tell us what we should call you. [01:04.000 –> 01:09.000] Listeners maybe. Hello listeners. Hello. [01:09.000 –> 01:14.000] We’ll workshop it. Yeah sure. Definitely [01:14.000 –> 01:19.000] tweet at us please. So there is a quote here. [01:19.000 –> 01:24.000] I don’t know how you wanted me to say this. But for [01:24.000 –> 01:29.000] folks that would like transcripts transcripts are available in the show notes and [01:29.000 –> 01:34.000] on the website. So any transcripts for I’m assuming any [01:34.000 –> 01:39.000] episode at least this episode will be available there. [01:39.000 –> 01:44.000] So if you mention anything or if I say something weird and you’re like what was that word. [01:45.000 –> 01:50.000] You can look it up. So today we are here to talk [01:50.000 –> 01:55.000] about our main topic which is a research story. So this is part two technically. [01:56.000 –> 02:01.000] The first episode which you can find in our on our feed was Bev and I talking about our [02:01.000 –> 02:06.000] experiences in research. And they said that you had a they had a very cool [02:06.000 –> 02:11.000] monkey poop thing. Yes. So if you’re [02:11.000 –> 02:16.000] yeah if you’re like not not sure what what monkey poop what go back [02:16.000 –> 02:21.000] and listen to that right. Please. And we do have some news. [02:21.000 –> 02:26.000] But before we get to that Bev what have you been up to. [02:26.000 –> 02:31.000] I have been struggling just in general. [02:31.000 –> 02:36.000] But I at least like what I’ve been playing. I’ve been on a weird [02:36.000 –> 02:41.000] solitaire kick lately. Like I was at a conference last week and that’s what got [02:41.000 –> 02:46.000] me through the conference was just playing solitaire while I was listening. Do you have [02:46.000 –> 02:51.000] like a specific like with with cards or do you have a specific. There’s like an app. [02:51.000 –> 02:56.000] I think it’s like a game pass app or whatever. I don’t know. [02:56.000 –> 03:01.000] I have it for Xbox and I download it on the phone because I was like I wanted something that I could play [03:01.000 –> 03:06.000] Spider solitaire on and also bring my solitaire and free [03:06.000 –> 03:11.000] sell and everything but not have to download like five different apps for it. So yeah. [03:11.000 –> 03:16.000] I know exactly what you’re talking about actually. The second thing you said Xbox I was [03:16.000 –> 03:21.000] like oh I used to do that all the time. So I used to have a Microsoft service [03:21.000 –> 03:26.000] and which is a laptop for those for those that didn’t know [03:26.000 –> 03:31.000] that was like the Microsoft laptop. And it came with the [03:31.000 –> 03:36.000] the games and quote unquote one of the quote unquote games was solid was that solitaire pack. And [03:36.000 –> 03:41.000] they have dailies like you can do them every day. Yes I’ve been doing the dailies. [03:41.000 –> 03:46.000] I loved it. Oh OK. [03:46.000 –> 03:51.000] So you’ve been solid. Which one’s your favorite. I feel like freestyle is my favorite. OK [03:51.000 –> 03:56.000] I didn’t really like freestyle. What’s the one with the polar bear the Klondike one. There’s like there’s the polar [03:56.000 –> 04:01.000] that’s like that’s like regular solitaire. They call it Klondike and I don’t know why Klondike [04:01.000 –> 04:06.000] right right right. No there was another one the pyramid one maybe. Oh the pyramid one. [04:06.000 –> 04:11.000] Is that like the one we have to do like the math and like add it up to like 13. [04:11.000 –> 04:16.000] Yeah. I also like that one. Like I never heard of that one before until I played [04:16.000 –> 04:21.000] this game. Like this is so fun. Yeah. Yeah. [04:21.000 –> 04:26.000] Well what else other than solid. [04:26.000 –> 04:31.000] I feel like that’s that’s been mostly like other than the research story I’ve been on like [04:31.000 –> 04:36.000] right. Like I was doing stardew and then I went on the conference and then I couldn’t really [04:36.000 –> 04:41.000] play it and then got obsessed with solitaire. So like I moved from my stardew like obsession [04:41.000 –> 04:46.000] to solitaire and I’ll probably go back to start. I feel like we’ll see. It’s that time of year. [04:46.000 –> 04:51.000] Like I feel like this time of year when things start changing and like you get that springy feel to the to the [04:51.000 –> 04:56.000] air. Everyone’s playing stardew right now. Like all of my friends are like I’ve just been really enjoying [04:56.000 –> 05:01.000] stardew. I need to replay it because I have never made it past. I’ve never [05:01.000 –> 05:06.000] made it through the second year. Yeah. Yeah. That was why I picked it up again because [05:06.000 –> 05:11.000] I was like I need to do this. And then I made it past second year and now I’m like finally 1.5 [05:11.000 –> 05:16.000] content. So do it and maybe we can talk about it because we haven’t really talked about [05:16.000 –> 05:21.000] the 1.5 update. So do it. That’s true. Is the 1.5 update free? [05:21.000 –> 05:26.000] Yes. It’s free. I think it’s on all platforms by this point. Like even on mobile. I [05:26.000 –> 05:31.000] have it on steam or not steam switch. So do it. [05:31.000 –> 05:36.000] I have been playing research life. [05:36.000 –> 05:41.000] IRL research story. [05:41.000 –> 05:46.000] IRL research. I’ve been planning a new field season and this one is going to be different [05:46.000 –> 05:51.000] than what I’ve done before. And so I need to actually construct some traps. So I’ve purchased a [05:51.000 –> 05:56.000] bunch of acrylic and then I have to go like buy. I have to go like buy [05:56.000 –> 06:01.000] these buckets. I basically played go get my [06:01.000 –> 06:06.000] PI’s credit card and go spend money. [06:06.000 –> 06:11.000] But it’s my research money. But like it’s through someone else’s [06:11.000 –> 06:16.000] card. But it was really fun to like quote unquote fun to go to like Home Depot. Just drop down [06:16.000 –> 06:21.000] for shopping. Home Depot is a lot of fun. It can be a lot of fun. [06:21.000 –> 06:26.000] It was also really fun because I brought Stella because you can bring dogs. [06:27.000 –> 06:32.000] And she did so good. Oh that’s that’s even more fun. Like I [06:32.000 –> 06:37.000] feel like Home Depot’s like should have more dogs because it’s like no one cares. So [06:37.000 –> 06:42.000] we want more dogs at Home Depot or like Lowe’s. That day I took her to let’s see we went to [06:42.000 –> 06:47.000] Petco obviously can bring pets in their Michaels. You can bring pet dogs [06:47.000 –> 06:52.000] into Michaels and Joanne’s. That sounds like a disaster. [06:52.000 –> 06:57.000] Well and it was so funny because she loves to pick trash up off the floor. So every time she [06:57.000 –> 07:02.000] picked something up like and like people I mean things fall off of things [07:02.000 –> 07:07.000] at craft stores all the time. Oh yeah. If you buy like a floral like a fake floral display [07:07.000 –> 07:12.000] like these fake flowers fell off and they were just on the ground and she just kept picking trash up [07:12.000 –> 07:17.000] and I kept taking it from her. So by the time I got up to the register I was just like here’s all this trash. [07:19.000 –> 07:24.000] But she also picked up this this DMC claw DMC floss [07:24.000 –> 07:29.000] like floss that you’d use for like cross stitching or whatever. And I do that. And so I was [07:29.000 –> 07:34.000] like I’ll just buy this. And they were like are you sure you don’t have to. And I was like she picked it up. I was I’ll just [07:34.000 –> 07:39.000] buy it’s fine. She slobbered all over this like this poor floss. Yeah like her saliva [07:39.000 –> 07:44.000] is on this. I’ll just buy it. And then I took it home and I actually looked at it. [07:44.000 –> 07:49.000] It’s actually a color of used a lot. So I was like OK good good. I’m glad like you can never [07:49.000 –> 07:54.000] have too much floss. I feel like she was just looking at. Yeah. Yeah. And like you know sometimes you have to [07:54.000 –> 07:59.000] use a little bit of saliva to like make it work anyway. She just is helping you [07:59.000 –> 08:04.000] preemptively. That’s true. That’s true. You have to like kind of get it get it together because you pull [08:04.000 –> 08:09.000] strands together. Mm hmm. Other than that my partner [08:09.000 –> 08:14.000] came here for the weekend and he brought overcooked to [08:14.000 –> 08:19.000] this game on steam. And I’m obsessed. [08:19.000 –> 08:24.000] We played it for like I say two hours. He says three hours straight. I [08:24.000 –> 08:29.000] wanted to play more. He was like I need a break. And I was like we need to keep playing. [08:30.000 –> 08:35.000] Basically did you ever play like Diner Dash. No I don’t think so. [08:35.000 –> 08:40.000] OK. It’s like that. It’s basically OK. It’s like you’re like building [08:41.000 –> 08:46.000] there’s recipes that come across the screen and then you’re supposed to build them. So like if a [08:46.000 –> 08:51.000] salad comes across the screen then you have to grab a lettuce and a tomato and chop them up [08:51.000 –> 08:56.000] and then serve them on a plate and then put them on the like outgoing thing. [08:56.000 –> 09:01.000] So it’s like an assembly game essentially. Yeah it is an assembly game. But the fun part of it [09:01.000 –> 09:06.000] quote unquote fun part about it is that you. So it’s if you’re playing by yourself [09:06.000 –> 09:11.000] you control two people like you [09:11.000 –> 09:16.000] just switch to switch between the two people. But if you have two people it puts one of you on one [09:16.000 –> 09:21.000] one side of the of the kitchen or whatever and then one on the other side. And like [09:21.000 –> 09:26.000] so I might have all of the food and then he has the cutting [09:26.000 –> 09:31.000] boards and then maybe I have the fryers and then he has the plates. And [09:31.000 –> 09:36.000] so I literally have to like throw stuff to him so he [09:36.000 –> 09:41.000] can cut it up and then he throws it back to me and like there’s a barrier in between. So like you can’t [09:41.000 –> 09:46.000] go on the barrier. You’re throwing stuff around both both directions and then [09:46.000 –> 09:51.000] like trying to serve it up. And then also at one point there’s like dirty dishes. So someone has to clean them and you’re [09:51.000 –> 09:56.000] basically trying to like do this cooperation. And if you don’t do the order [09:56.000 –> 10:01.000] fast enough you like lose your tips and you like [10:01.000 –> 10:06.000] lose points for that and stuff. And the whole point I guess is that it’s [10:06.000 –> 10:11.000] it’s got a loose story where there’s the king [10:11.000 –> 10:16.000] onion guy of the world accidentally made undead zombies [10:16.000 –> 10:21.000] and they’re called the unbred. OK I’m totally fine with zombies. [10:21.000 –> 10:26.000] I mean you never see the zombies. The thing is like that you’re trying [10:26.000 –> 10:31.000] to learn how to cook to feed them to start to [10:31.000 –> 10:36.000] stave them off so that they don’t eat the people I guess is the whole point. [10:36.000 –> 10:41.000] Makes sense. I see that. OK. So you’re just having like pet zombies essentially. [10:41.000 –> 10:46.000] You never I like you never see them. OK that’s [10:46.000 –> 10:51.000] I need I need an overcooked version where there’s more zombie interaction. Yeah. [10:51.000 –> 10:56.000] Yeah. So we played that and then we also [10:56.000 –> 11:01.000] started playing board games. So last night Jeff [11:01.000 –> 11:06.000] and I introduced my roommate to Catan. She’d never played. [11:06.000 –> 11:11.000] And we played we played one game and in the beginning of the game she was [11:11.000 –> 11:16.000] like I don’t like this. I don’t know if this is for me. And then by the end she lost by the end of the game. [11:16.000 –> 11:21.000] And she like like I won. I just like and I did the [11:21.000 –> 11:26.000] classic like build two roads take longest road and I have this like secret [11:26.000 –> 11:31.000] development card that gives me a bonus point and I won like bam. Like like I went from like three points away [11:31.000 –> 11:36.000] to winning to like bam I won. Beautiful. And she was just like she was like no [11:36.000 –> 11:41.000] and she like stood up and walked away. She’s like I hate this game and then she turns back [11:41.000 –> 11:46.000] around. She’s like we’re playing again. [11:46.000 –> 11:51.000] I love that. But I mean Jeff and I really want to play more board games. So we went to a card shop [11:51.000 –> 11:56.000] today. A couple card shops today. One game. I don’t know if you’ve seen it’s called arch ravels. [11:56.000 –> 12:01.000] Arch ravels? Why ravels or ravels? Ravels because you knit. [12:03.000 –> 12:08.000] It’s a knitting board game. Oh my goodness. [12:08.000 –> 12:13.000] I’m going to find it for you and then put it in the chat or something. I feel like I need this because it [12:13.000 –> 12:18.000] and it looked like I was like oh it’s probably really expensive. It’s only like 20 bucks. [12:18.000 –> 12:23.000] That’s amazing. Or at least like so some places have like 31. It’s [12:23.000 –> 12:28.000] somewhere between like it’s under 40 for sure. And I was I don’t know board games are expensive. So [12:28.000 –> 12:33.000] so I was like I didn’t bring my wallet and like I wasn’t going to make Jeff pay for it [12:33.000 –> 12:38.000] because he’s not a knitter. Yeah. You compete with fellow knitters to collect [12:38.000 –> 12:43.000] wool finish patterns and make a masterwork. So it looked really amazing. But we [12:43.000 –> 12:48.000] ended up getting a game called love letters which is a card game where you are trying [12:48.000 –> 12:53.000] to like woo a princess. OK. And you’re trying [12:53.000 –> 12:58.000] to like win favors to woo the princess and you just like go back and forth and you try and [12:58.000 –> 13:03.000] make sure that you have the best card. I don’t know. We haven’t played it yet. OK. We also looked [13:03.000 –> 13:08.000] at there were other like really pretty games. There was wingspan [13:08.000 –> 13:13.000] there which I really enjoyed. It’s a fun game. It’s they didn’t have parks. [13:14.000 –> 13:19.000] And I know since we’re talking about parks I just for the fiftieth time have to [13:19.000 –> 13:24.000] apologize for spilling coffee. It’s fine. It’s 100 percent fine. [13:24.000 –> 13:29.000] This is why I sleeve meticulously every single thing that can possibly [13:29.000 –> 13:34.000] sleep. Like my partner spilled water on the table and [13:34.000 –> 13:39.000] like got onto like some of our card like our open boxes that we have and I’m like it’s it’s fine. Yeah. [13:39.000 –> 13:44.000] Like everything’s either in plastic or cardboard. Like I don’t care about the box. It was like it was fine. [13:44.000 –> 13:49.000] We played. Gosh we went down. We you and I both went down to D.C. [13:49.000 –> 13:54.000] to go play like a community day like two or three years ago. I don’t remember. [13:54.000 –> 13:59.000] It’s been a hot minute. And they brought all their all their games and we play parks [13:59.000 –> 14:04.000] with some other friends and it was really fun. And then at one point I spilled coffee and I was just like [14:04.000 –> 14:09.000] I immediately was like I will buy you a new one. [14:09.000 –> 14:14.000] It feels so bad. And I’m like it’s fine. [14:14.000 –> 14:19.000] It haunts me to this day. You’re completely fine. Yeah. Oh you are just going to have to [14:19.000 –> 14:24.000] come over and accidentally spill something on one of your games. [14:24.000 –> 14:29.000] Please do. Please do. Oh yeah. I mean so that’s I don’t [14:29.000 –> 14:34.000] I mean I’ve still been playing Pokemon Go and Pikmin Bloom and stuff like that but [14:34.000 –> 14:39.000] I’ve not really been playing a ton of games but it’s cool. It’s a weird time. [14:39.000 –> 14:44.000] It is a weird time. So jumping into the news. [14:44.000 –> 14:49.000] First bit of news is that Disney Dreamlight Valley has an update launching [14:49.000 –> 14:54.000] April 5th. So very soon and update is called [14:54.000 –> 14:59.000] the Pride of the Valley update. And so it’s it adds adult Simba [14:59.000 –> 15:04.000] and adult Nala and it’s about you know like Lion King. [15:04.000 –> 15:09.000] So there’s not a ton of information about it. It just says like a new realm [15:09.000 –> 15:14.000] opens there’s new characters more surprises. They said that there’s a path to [15:14.000 –> 15:19.000] celebrate the Disney parks. Interesting. So I think it’s just going to be [15:19.000 –> 15:24.000] like a theme park thing. I don’t know. I haven’t played Disney so. I haven’t either. I love [15:24.000 –> 15:29.000] Simba and if Simba is voice acted in here by the original like [15:29.000 –> 15:34.000] Simba I think. Oh I doubt it. I doubt it. I know I highly doubt it. But just the voice actor [15:34.000 –> 15:39.000] for Simba is just like I definitely had a crush on Simba. [15:40.000 –> 15:45.000] Oh my gosh. I don’t even know if Matthew Broderick is still around. What is he doing [15:45.000 –> 15:50.000] nowadays. I don’t know. But I need to hear more of him. He’s 61. He is married to Sarah Jessica [15:50.000 –> 15:55.000] Parker. Oh that’s OK. Wow. [15:55.000 –> 16:00.000] I did not know that. He’s a good egg. He’s done a lot. So yeah [16:00.000 –> 16:05.000] that is Disney Dreamlight Valley. Pride of the Valley [16:05.000 –> 16:10.000] is like interesting because I understand why it’s called Pride of the Valley. But it made me think it was like [16:10.000 –> 16:15.000] like Pride Month something. I was like I got excited. That’s fair. [16:15.000 –> 16:20.000] That is very fair. Some people. So apparently like Pride of the Valley is [16:20.000 –> 16:25.000] something at the parks. Interesting. So they’re trying to like market. That’s smart [16:25.000 –> 16:30.000] for Disney to market their physical location I guess. [16:30.000 –> 16:35.000] I don’t know because someone said something about like one of the comments on Twitter or something was like this is my [16:35.000 –> 16:40.000] favorite part of the parks. So I don’t know. OK. I haven’t been to Disney [16:40.000 –> 16:45.000] years. I’m going to have to change that. And then now my partner hasn’t either. I’m like we [16:45.000 –> 16:50.000] need to go. We need to go. I’ve never been. But like now I’m just like it’s [16:50.000 –> 16:55.000] so freaking expensive. And I mean it probably was always expensive [16:55.000 –> 17:00.000] but like it just seems like hell to me honestly. [17:00.000 –> 17:05.000] Especially in the heat depending on where you’re [17:05.000 –> 17:10.000] going. I just came back from California so I should have like the last time I went to California I went to [17:10.000 –> 17:15.000] Disneyland for the first time. But it’s like a beautiful weather over there. I definitely would not go to the Florida one. [17:15.000 –> 17:20.000] I actually someone a previous partner invited me [17:20.000 –> 17:25.000] to go to the Florida one and he was like I’ll pay for everything. And I was [17:25.000 –> 17:30.000] like hmm but Florida. But Florida. [17:30.000 –> 17:35.000] Understand. Well as a Floridian I 100% understand. [17:35.000 –> 17:40.000] Maybe go to the California one. He does it every year though. So I don’t know. OK. [17:40.000 –> 17:45.000] Next piece of news Mika and the Witch’s Mountain. There is a new trailer. [17:46.000 –> 17:51.000] It is very cute. [17:51.000 –> 17:56.000] The trailer is very cute. There’s like music behind it. It’s a minute and a half long and you kind of [17:56.000 –> 18:01.000] just like see there’s part gameplay and part like animation [18:01.000 –> 18:06.000] of the game. And it just looks really cute. It’s just Mika [18:06.000 –> 18:11.000] like doing her business delivering stuff and you get to see a bunch of the [18:11.000 –> 18:16.000] other characters. And yeah. Did you get a chance to watch the [18:16.000 –> 18:21.000] trailer at all. No but I know I [18:21.000 –> 18:26.000] will watch it after this. But I am very excited for this game [18:26.000 –> 18:31.000] just because I love the other games in this world. I guess this universe. [18:32.000 –> 18:37.000] So looking forward to this and I’m a little behind on the Kickstarter updates [18:37.000 –> 18:42.000] but I’ll get in there. Yeah. It’s still just had the planned release date [18:42.000 –> 18:46.000] of 2023 so question mark. Yeah. [18:46.000 –> 18:51.000] Mary Little Witch and you develop to deliver packages. The flight looks really cute like the flight [18:51.000 –> 18:56.000] of this game. Oh my goodness. It seems like it’s. The Studio Ghibli. Yeah. Yeah. [18:56.000 –> 19:01.000] I’m really excited for just being a little witch doing a little delivery service. [19:01.000 –> 19:06.000] You just did a little cute witch. Yeah. It’s very cute. [19:06.000 –> 19:11.000] I know Kevin is also very excited. Likely something that would be covered on this podcast. [19:11.000 –> 19:16.000] Very likely. Yeah. I think several of us are backers [19:16.000 –> 19:21.000] at this point. So we’ll definitely at least play it at some point. Have a couple triple [19:21.000 –> 19:26.000] million harvests. Next is Coral [19:26.000 –> 19:31.000] Island. So there is a summer update for Coral Island coming out on May [19:31.000 –> 19:36.000] 3rd. No just as May 2023. So somewhere sometime in May there will be an update [19:36.000 –> 19:41.000] for the summer. And there’s a lot of things in this [19:41.000 –> 19:46.000] update. The first thing is that a lot of the characters are going to be getting summer outfits. [19:46.000 –> 19:51.000] So I am here for you. Yes. I know. I love the idea of [19:51.000 –> 19:56.000] characters like changing with the seasons. I know Animal Crossing does this where like every now and [19:56.000 –> 20:01.000] then someone has one of your characters has like a new outfit or [20:01.000 –> 20:06.000] is it only if you give them something like give them the shirt. I think they just change [20:06.000 –> 20:11.000] that. Like there there were some times where I just was like where did you get that. And then I talked to them because like [20:11.000 –> 20:16.000] they can give each other stuff as well. So you can talk to them and they might be like oh someone [20:16.000 –> 20:21.000] gave me this and so sweet. I don’t need this other shirt anymore. Go ahead and have it. [20:21.000 –> 20:26.000] You know something like that. So I also love that these like [20:26.000 –> 20:31.000] NPCs like have their own original style. So like I’m sure you can dress people essentially in Animal Crossing [20:31.000 –> 20:36.000] but these these these are like holistic characters who like what they like. And I [20:36.000 –> 20:41.000] am here for these outfits and want some of these shirts too. Yeah [20:41.000 –> 20:46.000] like give me this give me this wah banana shirt. And I want [20:46.000 –> 20:51.000] real life. It’s a banana that looks like a dolphin. [20:51.000 –> 20:56.000] Banana dolphin shirt. [20:56.000 –> 21:01.000] They can make so much money by selling these shirts. [21:01.000 –> 21:06.000] There’s also a new festival called Pet Day. The Pet Day Festival. In it there’s a couple [21:06.000 –> 21:11.000] different things. There’s a rodeo called the Wild Ride. So you ride this like bowl [21:11.000 –> 21:16.000] which is super cute. You just like push a button super super fast to try and make sure [21:16.000 –> 21:21.000] that you stay on the bowl. They have a cow competition where you [21:21.000 –> 21:26.000] try and like race your cows against other people [21:26.000 –> 21:31.000] and your cow might get distracted. You have to like pull them back to reality. There’s a chicken [21:31.000 –> 21:36.000] competition. I don’t know what this is about. When I first saw it I was like oh I don’t [21:36.000 –> 21:41.000] like chicken fighting like that doesn’t look good. But then when you’re doing like [21:41.000 –> 21:46.000] when when it shows that you’re like hitting buttons they don’t do anything. [21:46.000 –> 21:51.000] They just kind of like stare at each other which I’m here [21:51.000 –> 21:56.000] for. Yeah just chickens being chickens. [21:56.000 –> 22:01.000] There are 20. They’re talking about an animal shelter that will have 20 [22:01.000 –> 22:06.000] adoptable pets. And then they have the outline of all of the pets. They’re very cute. And there’s a little lizard [22:06.000 –> 22:11.000] and so cute. And there’s some bunnies and then many dogs and cats [22:11.000 –> 22:16.000] and one of the dogs looks like it could possibly be an Australian Shepherd. And I am [22:16.000 –> 22:21.000] here for it. Very cool. I [22:21.000 –> 22:26.000] have officially gotten it because I think I will be playing it for the podcast. Spoiler alert. [22:26.000 –> 22:31.000] So I am here for one the bathing suits [22:31.000 –> 22:36.000] and also here for the outfits and now this pet festival thing. Yeah. [22:36.000 –> 22:41.000] Oh wait maybe this is like a staring competition. Maybe. [22:41.000 –> 22:46.000] That’s what I’m wondering. That’s what it looks like. They’re glaring at each other. [22:46.000 –> 22:51.000] The little squinties. Yeah. I don’t think chickens really [22:51.000 –> 22:56.000] blink. Anyway there’s also a new customization and it shows [22:56.000 –> 23:01.000] a beard customization where you can put it put flowers in your beard. I love that. [23:01.000 –> 23:06.000] Oh my goodness. OK. And then I’m trying to scroll down to the thing that is the most important thing to me. [23:06.000 –> 23:11.000] OK. There’s also fruit plants and you can find critters. Here it is. Insect [23:11.000 –> 23:16.000] and critter traps quote as part of the catching mystery [23:16.000 –> 23:21.000] you will unlock now unlock traps used to catch insects and critters. You can place these on the [23:21.000 –> 23:26.000] ground and in the ocean. There are four traps two for insects and two for critters. Here’s a look at the tracks in [23:26.000 –> 23:31.000] action and it shows you catch an insect and then it’s a cute [23:31.000 –> 23:36.000] little caterpillar. Oh. So [23:36.000 –> 23:41.000] I’m here for that. Yeah. This is like everything about this game is [23:41.000 –> 23:46.000] beautiful. OK. I’m really excited about this. [23:46.000 –> 23:51.000] It’s like I believe it’s still in early access. Is out now. Early access is out now. Yeah. [23:51.000 –> 23:56.000] Oh wow. It’s from Indonesia. I did not know. Yeah. I bought it with the intention of [23:56.000 –> 24:01.000] playing it but I had to put more time into our main topic for today. [24:01.000 –> 24:06.000] So I haven’t touched it yet. Yeah. Yeah. So that is that. [24:06.000 –> 24:11.000] And then the last bit of news is about Rune Factory 3 Special [24:11.000 –> 24:16.000] Golden Memories Edition. So this is an edition [24:16.000 –> 24:21.000] of Rune Factory 3 Special that has a custom box [24:21.000 –> 24:26.000] on the outside custom outer box. I don’t really know what that means and a copy of the game. [24:26.000 –> 24:31.000] But you also get an acrylic standee of a bunch of the characters. [24:31.000 –> 24:36.000] The original soundtrack CD. A custom planner. [24:36.000 –> 24:41.000] Excuse me. I know. That sounds awesome. I kind of want this [24:41.000 –> 24:46.000] just so I could have all the goodies. Really. They look so cute. Yeah. Like the CD is [24:46.000 –> 24:51.000] as true. Beautiful. It really is. Yeah. Maybe this will be [24:51.000 –> 24:56.000] what makes me want to play Rune Factory 3 Special. [24:57.000 –> 25:02.000] It’s all you, Min. Uh huh. Uh huh. Uh huh. [25:02.000 –> 25:07.000] There’s also an exclusive swimsuit mode DLC. Sure. [25:07.000 –> 25:12.000] Okay. Sure. Interesting. Yeah. So that [25:12.000 –> 25:17.000] they have announced it and preorders for that will open soon. [25:17.000 –> 25:22.000] TM. And there’s apparently if you [25:22.000 –> 25:27.000] preorder on the XSEED store you can add a golden wooly keychain for [25:27.000 –> 25:32.000] $5 more. And I wouldn’t say it looks cute but it looks [25:32.000 –> 25:37.000] it still looks like something I would want. Maybe. [25:37.000 –> 25:42.000] I don’t know. Yeah. Looks a little like. Oh the wooly is ridiculous. [25:42.000 –> 25:47.000] Right? Yeah. Like it’s not cute but it’s like ridiculous and I love it just for it being ridiculous. [25:47.000 –> 25:52.000] Yeah. Very cute. I mean it’s weird. [25:52.000 –> 25:57.000] Uh huh. Uh huh. Exactly. There’s like a blank stare to its face. [25:57.000 –> 26:02.000] Yeah. Okay. I don’t play Rune Factory. [26:02.000 –> 26:07.000] So yeah. That is the news. [26:07.000 –> 26:12.000] So. [26:13.000 –> 26:18.000] Moving on to our main topic. Uh huh. [26:18.000 –> 26:23.000] I’m laughing because I am I am shame. [26:23.000 –> 26:28.000] I have played three minutes [26:28.000 –> 26:33.000] of this game. And I feel so bad but I just have [26:33.000 –> 26:38.000] it’s been a it’s been a heck of a time. It’s been a month. Mentally, [26:38.000 –> 26:43.000] emotionally, physically. It’s been a year. Literally. I don’t know. [26:43.000 –> 26:48.000] So I mean I have thoughts about the game. Like I’ve looked at it. [26:48.000 –> 26:53.000] I’ve I’ve played three. So but I figured [26:53.000 –> 26:58.000] I would just kind of like go over like kind of read what has been said about the game. [26:58.000 –> 27:03.000] Like what they have said on their steam. [27:03.000 –> 27:08.000] And then also just kind of like interview you because you play more than three minutes. [27:08.000 –> 27:13.000] I just how my playtime and it’s a very cursed number. [27:13.000 –> 27:18.000] Sixty six hours. Nice. [27:18.000 –> 27:23.000] You can’t play anymore. I can’t. I have to put it down right here. [27:23.000 –> 27:28.000] Yeah. Right here. Okay. So just to remind people this [27:28.000 –> 27:33.000] is what the bio of research story on steam quote set out to [27:33.000 –> 27:38.000] discover and record plants and creatures for the Violet archive. Grow crops, [27:38.000 –> 27:43.000] tame animals and build the perfect farm. Forge friendships along the way as you begin your life as a [27:43.000 –> 27:48.000] researcher. Unquote. So yeah you’re kind of like you’re like a [27:48.000 –> 27:53.000] scientist in this area which is why both of us were like blessed. [27:54.000 –> 27:59.000] Yes. And it is important to note that this game still [27:59.000 –> 28:04.000] is in early access. They would they said that they would like it to be in early access [28:04.000 –> 28:09.000] for somewhere between six to six months to a year max. [28:09.000 –> 28:14.000] So it’s I mean it just came out [28:14.000 –> 28:19.000] of early acts like to like to buy and to play like a couple weeks ago. [28:19.000 –> 28:24.000] Maybe a month ago. Yeah. So and they said that when it [28:24.000 –> 28:29.000] goes from early access to a full game like the price will go up. So if you are [28:29.000 –> 28:34.000] interested in this or you know. Yeah. Get it now because you will get it for less [28:34.000 –> 28:39.000] expensive. Yes. So I will read a little bit more of [28:39.000 –> 28:44.000] the additional content and features that they plan to include in the full version. They [28:44.000 –> 28:49.000] said that they want to have more creatures fish and crops and to expand on the [28:49.000 –> 28:54.000] researching mechanics. They’re going to have more NPCs more romance [28:54.000 –> 28:59.000] bowls which I’m assuming means romance like options more heart [28:59.000 –> 29:04.000] events and they want to have like a marriage system. So think of like Stardew Valley. Yeah. [29:04.000 –> 29:09.000] Additional features such as festivals more content for [29:09.000 –> 29:14.000] decoration and building and then very importantly controller support. [29:14.000 –> 29:19.000] So currently does not have controller support which has been interesting since I’ve been playing it on [29:19.000 –> 29:24.000] Steam Deck. So it’s it’s been a good way to actually [29:24.000 –> 29:29.000] test run I think non controller games on the Steam Deck and it’s [29:29.000 –> 29:34.000] actually not that bad. Like I can right click or left click with the right trigger [29:34.000 –> 29:39.000] and like right click with the left trigger. So it’s been actually pretty nice and I almost kind [29:39.000 –> 29:44.000] of even still prefer it even though it doesn’t really have this controller support on the [29:44.000 –> 29:49.000] Steam Deck itself. So that’s that’s my review for the Steam Deck. It’s it’s still playable. [29:49.000 –> 29:54.000] That’s good. Yeah. I was going to say I had it just on Steam because it is [29:54.000 –> 29:59.000] only on Steam. I think that’s my big downfall is that [30:00.000 –> 30:05.000] the computer in this room. So my other computers and Mac and most games are only available on [30:05.000 –> 30:10.000] Windows. And so and if I come and play a game in this room I have to like put both my [30:10.000 –> 30:15.000] dogs away and like just kind of not just like a sit down and play a [30:15.000 –> 30:20.000] game and have fun like it’s kind of its own thing. So [30:20.000 –> 30:25.000] but I digress like if it was on Switch like if [30:25.000 –> 30:30.000] they had it on Switch I probably would have played it because I can play that on my couch. [30:30.000 –> 30:35.000] Yeah. So before we jump into like what the early access version has [30:35.000 –> 30:40.000] specifically and then I kind of like ask you about these different aspects. [30:40.000 –> 30:45.000] What are your first impressions? Like what do you think of the graphics and the sound and the [30:45.000 –> 30:50.000] like the overall gameplay? I will say first impressions are overall good. [30:50.000 –> 30:55.000] I feel like it’s it’s a very cute game. Like it has like it has more of a [30:55.000 –> 31:00.000] little wood I think like feel to it than than like pixel [31:00.000 –> 31:05.000] pixels like Stardew. So it’s more like chibi I think kind of. [31:05.000 –> 31:10.000] But the art for like there’s like a research book and the art for that is like really good. I really [31:10.000 –> 31:15.000] like the drawings of like all the things that you’re like interacting with. [31:15.000 –> 31:20.000] Some of the character like pixels aren’t like since they’re so small [31:20.000 –> 31:25.000] it can be a little hard to like differentiate but at the same time they’re like it’s like a fantasy [31:25.000 –> 31:30.000] setting so there’s like different species like there’s like elves and like druids and stuff. So just [31:30.000 –> 31:35.000] having that different coloration of like skin types helps a little bit with that. Like [31:35.000 –> 31:40.000] who am I talking to? Oh yeah it’s Theo. [31:40.000 –> 31:45.000] But yeah I it’s it’s very I will say it’s very Stardew-esque. [31:45.000 –> 31:50.000] It feels a lot like Stardew and maybe that’s why it was like so easy like to jump into this since I’ve [31:50.000 –> 31:55.000] been on such a like Stardew like kick. Like you have like the four [31:55.000 –> 32:00.000] seasons like they’re looking to do the marriage system adding festivals. So I think it’s essentially going [32:00.000 –> 32:05.000] to be a research version of Stardew which I don’t [32:05.000 –> 32:10.000] mind. I am here for it. Exactly. There’s definitely [32:10.000 –> 32:15.000] just as much to manage I think as there is in Stardew. So there’s a whole bunch of [32:15.000 –> 32:20.000] things. There’s so many more different animals than in Stardew. [32:20.000 –> 32:25.000] And we’ll get into that I think later but it’s it’s good. I would [32:25.000 –> 32:30.000] I would recommend it. Mm hmm. Cool. I was also just trying to see if they have it planned that [32:30.000 –> 32:35.000] they want to go to Switch. I hope so. I would I would [32:35.000 –> 32:40.000] think if I don’t know anywhere in there if they had enough like buy in I think if [32:40.000 –> 32:45.000] they like. Yeah this game does well enough. I’m sure they can afford to port it. [32:45.000 –> 32:50.000] So it might just be time or if they want to spend their time elsewhere [32:50.000 –> 32:55.000] in another game or something. I don’t know. OK. So the first topic this is [32:55.000 –> 33:00.000] like so this is what they have said like quote the early access version of research story [33:00.000 –> 33:05.000] features core systems and gameplay. And then so I’m just going to like mention it and then ask you [33:05.000 –> 33:10.000] like what your thoughts are on it. So the first core gameplay system is [33:10.000 –> 33:15.000] to research farm tame and fish. And it says quote players can complete [33:15.000 –> 33:20.000] research scrolls by observing different species growing crops [33:20.000 –> 33:25.000] taming animals and fishing. There are currently 60 plus. Why not just say [33:25.000 –> 33:30.000] the number researchable so crops creatures and fish. Maybe [33:30.000 –> 33:35.000] because they like planning to like add like more as they go on. [33:35.000 –> 33:40.000] There are currently providing like a specific number [33:40.000 –> 33:45.000] then they would need to keep updating it with new updates. That’s true. So [33:46.000 –> 33:51.000] yeah. So what what are you. So let’s start with the research [33:51.000 –> 33:56.000] scrolls by observing the different species. What is how does that work. So there’s three different [33:56.000 –> 34:01.000] sorry there’s four different types of research things researchable [34:01.000 –> 34:06.000] as I guess is what they’re calling it. And they usually like there’s a lot of foraging [34:06.000 –> 34:11.000] involved in this game and that’s honestly I think the easiest way to make money early game is [34:11.000 –> 34:16.000] it’s not a huge map. So just literally during like a route like every day. [34:16.000 –> 34:21.000] So the first thing you do with like anything that you collect is find it first [34:21.000 –> 34:26.000] and then like if it’s specifically like a plant if it’s like an herb or [34:26.000 –> 34:31.000] really calling flowers and herbs or vegetables and fruits. The first thing you [34:31.000 –> 34:36.000] do is like harvest the thing. Then you have to like put it into your little mic like there’s a little [34:36.000 –> 34:41.000] microscopic. What’s the [34:41.000 –> 34:46.000] thing that lets you like zoom in closer. Microscoping glass. No it’s like [34:46.000 –> 34:51.000] the hand held glass. There we go. [34:51.000 –> 34:56.000] The microscope in your hand. Yes. The portable [34:56.000 –> 35:01.000] microscope. So so there’s like a different tab for that [35:01.000 –> 35:06.000] and there’s like different goals to I guess fully research [35:06.000 –> 35:11.000] quote unquote research a thing and that’s how you earn you earn the resource scroll. It’s very [35:11.000 –> 35:16.000] very much similar to the legends of archaea system kind of. [35:16.000 –> 35:21.000] Yeah. So you have like four four like three to four maybe three to five different tasks [35:21.000 –> 35:26.000] for each item. And then once you complete all their tasks you officially have locked to [35:26.000 –> 35:31.000] your scroll you can put in the library and you’ve officially researched this thing to its [35:31.000 –> 35:36.000] extent. And most of it is observing it [35:36.000 –> 35:41.000] like the first the first one the first task is usually observing it out [35:41.000 –> 35:46.000] like in the wild or whatever. So before you can collect seeds for plants you have [35:46.000 –> 35:51.000] to observe it like two to three times and then you can collect the seeds and then you have to actually grow the thing on your farm. [35:52.000 –> 35:57.000] And that’s how you do the you do the thing. [35:58.000 –> 36:03.000] And like the little research page that like pops up in like your research journal it’s [36:03.000 –> 36:08.000] like pretty detailed like it has like a description. So like I’m looking at camel meal it’s like a small [36:08.000 –> 36:13.000] flower with a sweet herbal scent. It shows you like what it drops. So obviously like the flower and the [36:13.000 –> 36:18.000] seeds and then the information that takes three days to grow edible blooms said to be good for brewing tea. [36:18.000 –> 36:23.000] And then it has growing conditions and foraging locations. So each. [36:23.000 –> 36:28.000] Wow. So yeah it’s very in-depth. So like you could just look at this thing and see exactly [36:28.000 –> 36:33.000] when like what season it grows in. Does it have to be close or far away from water. [36:33.000 –> 36:38.000] Does require a different type of like fertilizer. Does require a different type of soil. [36:40.000 –> 36:45.000] So it’s pretty in-depth. I really like that aspect and got a little frustrated sometimes [36:45.000 –> 36:50.000] kept planting like tomatoes and I was like why why isn’t this thing growing. And it’s because [36:50.000 –> 36:56.000] it needs to be next to a light source. So like they have like little lanterns and they even have like a shade cloth [36:56.000 –> 37:01.000] for things that need to be partial shade which is really cool. Wow. So it’s a it’s [37:01.000 –> 37:06.000] pretty in-depth. I don’t know like I can’t like I’m not super familiar with some of these plants I can’t tell [37:06.000 –> 37:12.000] like if that’s exactly the conditions you need to grow them. But I would assume they did that research [37:13.000 –> 37:18.000] research going into this game. I would hope that the [37:18.000 –> 37:23.000] game that has research in the name was researched. Right. Right. Exactly. [37:23.000 –> 37:28.000] So a couple of them I think might be like a little made up like the creatures [37:29.000 –> 37:34.000] like they have chicken but then they also have a sprout kitten which is just a cat like and [37:34.000 –> 37:39.000] has like a little plant on its head. You don’t have a sprout kitten. [37:39.000 –> 37:44.000] I don’t but I need one now. Like that is like the two [37:44.000 –> 37:49.000] like vibes that I want is like plants and cats. So it makes sense that you would [37:49.000 –> 37:54.000] put them together. Uh-huh. [37:54.000 –> 37:59.000] And like they have a grass bun which is essentially a bunny. They have a fox. [37:59.000 –> 38:04.000] The one that you are excited about is literally just called the mountain pup. [38:05.000 –> 38:10.000] Uh-huh. Yeah it’s probably supposed to be a Burmese mountain dog. Uh-huh. But the colors. [38:10.000 –> 38:15.000] So Stella my Australian Shepherd puppy she has the color like everyone says like oh [38:15.000 –> 38:20.000] Burmese. And I’m like no she’s an Australian Shepherd actually. [38:20.000 –> 38:25.000] And like I think that the tri color is actually like I’m going to look this up because [38:25.000 –> 38:30.000] I keep saying this and I don’t know if this is right. But the [38:30.000 –> 38:35.000] tri color is the original color of Australian [38:35.000 –> 38:40.000] Shepherds. Oh it just says black and white. Well [38:40.000 –> 38:45.000] dogs are so weird. Like their breeds are don’t make any sense. They’re all one species. So [38:45.000 –> 38:50.000] I don’t know. I don’t quite understand it. But yeah so she’s a so she’s a black [38:50.000 –> 38:55.000] tri. So she gets she has some she looks like a little Burmese. [38:55.000 –> 39:00.000] And but so I mean that means that the the quote [39:00.000 –> 39:05.000] unquote mountain dog and research story looks like my dog. [39:05.000 –> 39:10.000] So I saw it in the trailer and I was like I need it. I know. She is a little mountain [39:10.000 –> 39:15.000] pup. Oh my gosh I haven’t. She’s in my little mountain. Uh-huh. She is. [39:17.000 –> 39:22.000] OK. What about the fishing. Well actually there’s a lot more to the creatures too. So [39:22.000 –> 39:27.000] like let me keep going. Sorry. Keep going. Creatures. Oh you’re fine. I’m just like going in order of like this [39:27.000 –> 39:32.000] research journal. It’s like that’s the next tab. I’m like I want to go in this next order. OK. [39:32.000 –> 39:37.000] So like looking at the creatures like the same thing like you see them out in the wild to you [39:37.000 –> 39:42.000] like you pet them which we don’t recommend petting wild animals because [39:42.000 –> 39:47.000] you don’t have wild animals. Yeah please don’t. You’re going to get hurt and it’s not good for [39:47.000 –> 39:52.000] them. But anyway in this game you pet them you collect one of their like little like dropped [39:52.000 –> 39:57.000] animals like for the mountain pup. It’s a tricolor for and [39:57.000 –> 40:02.000] then you observe them out in the wild and then build a creature pen on your farm [40:02.000 –> 40:07.000] and you can house them in these creature pens which is very cute. [40:07.000 –> 40:12.000] And you just like build up like your friendship level by like feeding them and and [40:12.000 –> 40:17.000] petting them every day and then eventually they’ll like provide like some sort of produce. So the mountain pup [40:17.000 –> 40:22.000] produces bones for example and the wood ram produces milk for whatever reason. [40:22.000 –> 40:27.000] I guess it’s supposed to be a goat. I don’t know. And like the fox drops meat. [40:27.000 –> 40:32.000] My personal. I understand. My personal mountain [40:32.000 –> 40:37.000] pup finds trash. [40:38.000 –> 40:43.000] Any walk that we go on she finds every piece of trash and she [40:43.000 –> 40:48.000] wants to just chew it. But I’m going to try and teach her to like trade it so that she can [40:48.000 –> 40:53.000] so that like I’ll just start bringing trash bags or like garbage bags. And you can just clean up everything. That’s [40:53.000 –> 40:58.000] exactly. And then she finds trash and then she can bring it to me and then she puts it in the bag I’ll give her a treat [40:58.000 –> 41:03.000] and then she can find another one. And so like I need to figure out how to make it a trick. [41:03.000 &ndash

We joined novelist Aimee Bender for a phone call that turned into a backyard conversation over Zoom. You're going to hear the sound of California birds (and possibly the odd car) as we unpack the beautiful mundane — truly a joyful conversation, especially if you're a writer (or interested in the process of writing). We touch on using writing to capture the manifold reflections of reality, the strange in the mundane, knowing your own quirky brain, finding relief in failure, and letting go to experience amazing surprise and wonder in our lives.Aimee Bender is an American novelist and short story writer, known for her surreal stories and characters. Her first book was The Girl in the Flammable Skirt, a collection of short stories chosen as a New York Times notable book of 1998. Other notable publications since are her novel An Invisible Sign of My Own, which was named as a Los Angeles Times pick of the year, a collection of short stories, Willful Creatures, and the novel The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. Her most recent novel, The Butterfly Lampshade, was published in 2020. Quince season is upon us and this recipe offers something different from the usual quince paste. This beautifully fragrant cake is great for dessert or with a cuppa.Quince1.5L water 150g caster sugar 3 medium quinces 1 lemonCake 125g butter200g honey 125g dark muscovado sugar (can use brown sugar) 2 medium eggs 1 cup poaching syrup from the fruit250g self-raising flour 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp baking soda1. Peel the quince and halve them. Place in a pot with water, lemon juice and sugar and simmer for one hour or until soft. With a sharp knife or spoon, remove the core when they're cool enough to handle. Slice each quince into 4 slices.2. Pre-heat your oven at 180 C. Grease and line a 23cm cake tin. Arrange the quince slices at the bottom in a single layer.3. Melt butter and stir it into the muscovado sugar and honey in a mixing bowl. Whisk the eggs with 1 cup of the poaching liquid and pour these into the bowl and stir to combine. Add the dry ingredients and mix to a smooth batter. It will be a slightly runny batter but fear not! Pour over the quinces in the tin.4. Bake the cake for around 40-45 minutes.5. Serve warm with custard and cream or ice cream.LISTEN ABOVE

Today's guest Kathleen Naytia is an editor, podcaster and writer of speculative fiction, and she has joined me to talk all about editing. So if you have any plans of getting your work out there as a writer, then this conversation is a must listen. As my guest last week - Dawn Michelle Hardy said - editing is a non-negotiable (and by the way - if you haven't listened to last week's episode, then go take a listen - it is gold if you are writing or planning to write a book). Kathleen and I go deep into talking about editing - what the editing process is (and what it isn't) and how having the right editor can make your work better and improve your writing. We talk about how to choose an editor, the questions to ask, and how to advocate for yourself during the editing process. We got a bit nerdy talking about how language has evolved over time and also ableist language, and how an editor can help to ensure that your use of language keeps you true to your intentions for your story, as well as the nuance involved particularly in fiction and memoir. And we talk about different types of editing and when you can bring in that type of support. Kathleen is also a writer of speculative fiction, so we talk about her own writing practice, how a book by Octavia Butler changed her life, and her podcast Loud in theatre. This conversation is full of wisdom about the importance of editing to writing and publishing your work and I think it is a must listen for anyone who wants to write and bring that story into the world.
