It turns out that modern psychology, neuroscience research, “habit hacks,” and popular self-help literature can all be summed up in one very classical idea: the virtues. So asserts Dr. Andrew Abela, founding dean of the Busch School of Business at The Catholic University of America. This week on HeightsCast, he helps us unpack his new book, Superhabits, in which he rebrands the virtues as “superhabits” to suit the contemporary discourse. Then, with the help of Thomas Aquinas and about a dozen gripping stories, Dr. Abela shows us how these superhabits of virtue are described, developed, and supported by modern research as the way to live a good life. Chapters: 2:20 Virtues: the essential human operating system 5:19 Humans pre-wired for virtue 9:14 Psychology research, self-help books all point back to virtues 17:57 “Anatomy of Virtue” diagram 25:57 The role emotions play 29:12 Virtue gets easier! 33:21 Translating virtue into “superhabits” 37:19 Redirecting anger with gentlefirmness 43:22 Finding restful leisure with eutrapelia 48:41 Where to begin Links: Superhabits: The Universal System for a Successful Life by Andrew Abela Dr. Abela's Substack featuring blog posts and articles “The Anatomy of Virtue” by Andrew Abela, including his diagram of Aquinas's categories of virtue Treatise on the Virtues by Thomas Aquinas Further reading: The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg Atomic Habits by James Clear Tiny Habits by B. Who are you as a person? I have heard it be said that they are really a good person. Question is how is that determined? One would say character traits. Character traits are the individual parts of one's personaity and behavior that express who one is as a person. There are three distinct classification: Personal, Social and Cultural Traits. As well as one's attitude towards one action The traits can be positive or negative. Such can also affect one's personal life, employment and relationships with others. Within a relationships many individuals settle for negative character traits such as dishonesty, disrespect and betrayal. Such behaviors can appear to be normal. Others would say that is just who I am. However is that acceptable? Is that unconditional love? Join myself and others as we talk about character traits. Change is possible. However, the work or process may not be easy. To join in on the conversation call 516 387-1914. Hosted by Jeanette Abney LMFT

Are you navigating the challenging journey of caring for a loved one with dementia? It's a path that not only tests our patience but also our spirits and moral compass, particularly when viewed through the lens of Christian ethics. Lizette discusses how the medical model of ethics, which includes autonomy, beneficence, non-malfeasance, and justice, differs from biblical ethical standards. She encourages listeners to base their decisions on God's perfect character and to frame their choices through scriptural teachings. By glorifying God in decision-making processes, caregivers can navigate the challenges of dementia caregiving with faith and purpose. 2:39 Navigating Ethical Decision-Making Challenges 9:58 Understanding God's Moral Character 15:19 Using the Bible to Frame Ethical Standards 24:08 Aiming for God's Glory in Decision-Making 27:51 Considerations for Ethical Decision-Making You are not alone on this journey. Engaging with a community, such as through church groups or Christian caregiving resources, can provide both support and shared wisdom. Additionally, platforms that focus on the intersection of faith and caregiving can offer guidance tailored to your values. Navigating dementia care as a Christian is not just about managing symptoms but about enriching the soul of the caregiver and the cared-for. It's a journey of faith as much as it is a journey of love and responsibility. Remember, every decision made in love and faith reflects the teachings of Christ and brings glory to God, even in the most challenging circumstances. By embracing both medical knowledge and spiritual wisdom, Christian caregivers can find the strength and guidance needed to make ethical decisions that honor their loved ones and their faith. His research involves empirical and philosophical questions that relate to evolutionary biology, cognitive science, and the scientific character, such as the evolution of altruism, complexity, and intelligence. He is the author of books like An Instinct for Truth: Curiosity and the Moral Character of Science. In this episode, we focus on An Instinct for Truth. We go through some of the traits that characterize (or should characterize) scientists, like curiosity, honesty, skepticism, and intellectual humility. We talk about moral values that orient science, and the importance of failure. We discuss the scientific method, the demarcation problem, and pseudoscience. We talk about the relationship between science and ethics. Finally, we ask if science is a cultural construct. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, PER HELGE LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, CRAIG HEALY, OLAF ALEX, PHILIP KURIAN, JONATHAN VISSER, JAKOB KLINKBY, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, PAULINA BARREN, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ARTHUR KOH, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, SUSAN PINKER, PABLO SANTURBANO, SIMON COLUMBUS, PHIL KAVANAGH, JORGE ESPINHA, CORY CLARK, MARK BLYTH, ROBERTO INGUANZO, MIKKEL STORMYR, ERIC NEURMANN, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, BERNARD HUGUENEY, ALEXANDER DANNBAUER, FERGAL CUSSEN, YEVHEN BODRENKO, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, DON ROSS, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, OZLEM BULUT, NATHAN NGUYEN, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, J.W., JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, IDAN SOLON, ROMAIN ROCH, DMITRY GRIGORYEV, TOM ROTH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, AL ORTIZ, NELLEKE BAK, KATHRINE AND PATRICK TOBIN, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, NICK GOLDEN, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS P. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I Have a Dream” speech is one of the most influential speeches in American history.
