HEAVY Music Interviews
A New Era Of Metal With STEFFEN KUMMERER From OBSCURA

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 17, 2025 10:47

Interview by Kris PetersWith their new album A Sonication, Germany-based metal band OBSCURA launch the second of their trilogy concept. The group's second (seventh overall) album for Nuclear Blast pivots on many fronts. Advanced, elegant yet refreshing, A Sonication sums up past endeavors effortlessly as it gazes with purpose and conviction into the future. OBSCURA are fan-renowned and critically acclaimed for challenging and then expanding upon norms. From Retribution (2004) through A Valediction (2021), the band flourished and made significant progress in a musical genre unprepared for a creative shot of German invention. A Sonication spearheads OBSCURA into a new era of extreme metal.Guitarist/vocalist Steffen Kummerer founded Obscura in 2002. Early on, he set out to improve, redefine, and push forward. Under his self-label creation, the Bavarian released debut album Retribution (2004), followed by heavy touring throughout Europe. Word quickly spread that a brand-new band from the south of Germany was on the rise. Buzz lead to a deal with U.S.-based Relapse Records. The first record out was Cosmogenesis. In Europe, Metal Hammer Germany awarded the album 6/7 while in the U.S. Cosmogenesis hit the Billboard charts at #71. The cross-continental praise and fevered momentum landed OBSCURA on high-profile tours in Europe, North America, and Japan. When follow-up Omnivium arrived in 2011, they upped their chart success, received more accolades from publications like Terrorizer, Rock Hard, and Decibel and had another massive round-world tour cycle, while enhancing and making progress on their clever brutality. OBSCURA further developed their sound on Akróasis (2016). Moored by jaw-dropping tracks like Sermon of the Seven Suns, Ode to the Sun, and the title track, Akróasis elevated OBSCURA to the highest levels of international renown.OBSCURA's most significant accomplishment was, however, just around the corner. The final part of a tetralogy, Diluvium (2018), fiercely pursued OBSCURA's multi-album transformation into musical innovators and metal powerhouses. Music videos for the title track, Emergent Evolution and Mortification of the Vulgar Sun, in concert with a substantial interest in virtuosic, forward-thinking metal, posited OBSCURA in the good graces (yet again) of the worldwide press in addition to rocketing up, for the very first time, the official album charts in Germany. The Germans also topped out at #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart with Diluvium.A turning point in the career of the Germans manifested with the first release for the biggest independent metal label on the planet, Nuclear Blast Records. A Valediction granted the band worldwide success, topping their previous albums in a heartbeat, and saw the band climbing higher chart positions worldwide. With epic opening track Forsaken, technical-through the roof Solaris and the catchy, melodic and yet accessible title track, A Valediction established the group as an outstanding and energetic live act, to be proved by their first tour to cover South- and Central America, aside from touring relentlessly throughout Europe, North America and Asia. With the February 7 release date of A Sonication looming, HEAVY sat down with Steffen Kummerer to find out more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Bruce became TrineDay's Marketing Director in 2020 when Kris launched TrineDay's podcast, THE JOURNEY: Conversations with Publisher Kris Millegan.Bruce's book, GOD, SCHOOL, 9/11 AND JFK: The Lies That Are Killing Us and The Truth That Sets Us Free, came out in 2021 (Read the amazing reviews at BrucedeTorres.com!), the same year Kris launched TrineDay's Live monthly Zoom Roundtables, inspired by Paul and Liz's book, THE VALEDICTION, their two-part memoir about the mainstream media's refusal to broadcast the truths that Paul and Liz found in Afghanistan about the Soviet Union's presence there in the 1980s, and about what Paul and Liz call “the narrative creation process.”The Roundtables explore JFK's vision of peace, and economic justice as the foundation for a genuine world peace, highlighting the principles of Henry George, 19th Century American political economist. Future Roundtables can be found at Valediction.net, under Events. Past Roundtables can be seen on YouTube, on the channel called “Valediction Vision.”S. K. Bain is the author of four TrineDay books: THE MOST DANGEROUS BOOK IN THE WORLD: 9/11 as Mass Ritual; THE END…IS ONLY THE BEGINNING: 2022 and the Coming of God; BLACK JACK: The Dawning of the New Great Age of Satan; and MOST DANGEROUS: A True Story. His humor lets the reader comprehend the malice evident in the events he relates.A. W. Finnegan is the author of THE SLEEPER AGENT: The Rise of Lyme Disease, Chronic Illness and the Great Imitator Antigens of Biological Warfare, “very different than what most people think of when they hear ‘biological warfare.' An attack to tire and exhaust; to take down your enemy over one hundred years, not six months or so with a deadly disease, because those burn out quickly and actually don't do as much damage. … if you take out the immune system, there's a secondary effect on the brain, causing what I call the dark triad: chronic disease, neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, and cancers. All three of those are absolutely exploding in western countries today.”Inspired by Paul and Liz's stories of synchronicities, dreams, and other mystical experiences, Bruce describes seeing JFK in his mind's eye while standing near the eternal flame at Arlington Cemetery, then having an echo or bookend experience while standing on the Grassy Knoll in Dealey Plaza seven years later.“TrineDay will always be family. I will stay in touch. And, as Kris says, there is a right way to walk here on earth, a right way for us to treat our brothers and sisters.”

Shabbat Teaching with Jake Petzold, at Temple Beth Am, Los Angeles, August 3, 2024. As our Torah calendar turns to Dvarim, we turn to reading the greatest valediction the world knows: Moses's extended set of farewell addresses as the people Israel encamped poised to enter the land of Israel. In these speeches, which almost alone comprise Deuteronomy, Moses retells Israel's story and delivers a final charge for the transformations they would experience without him. What can we learn from Moses about saying goodbye? We'll look at various farewells in history, including George Washington and Lou Gehrig. Jake Petzold is a Rabbinic Intern at Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills. Introduced by Rabbi Rebecca Schatz. (Youtube/Zoom)

The English writer and Anglican cleric John Donne is considered now to be the preeminent metaphysical poet of his time. He was born in 1572 to Roman Catholic parents, when practicing that religion was illegal in England. His work is distinguished by its emotional and sonic intensity and its capacity to plumb the paradoxes of faith, human and divine love, and the possibility of salvation. Donne often employs conceits, or extended metaphors, to yoke together “heterogenous ideas,” in the words of Samuel Johnson, thus generating the powerful ambiguity for which his work is famous. After a resurgence in his popularity in the early 20th century, Donne's standing as a great English poet, and one of the greatest writers of English prose, is now assured.-bio via Poetry Foundation Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

Likewise with the Anglo-Scottish composer William Wordsworth (1908–88), great-great-grandnephew of the poet, with whom I occasionally exchanged letters and phone calls in the pre-e-mail late 1970s and early 1980s: I never could have predicted that his reputation might be restored by a series of Toccata Classics albums of his orchestral music, and I confess to an inordinate degree of pleasure in having helped right that injustice. Wordsworth's piano music, too, was poorly known before now, none of it recorded since a handful of pieces appeared on LP 60 years ago – though his epic Piano Sonata is a work of major importance. The first-ever complete recording, on this release, reveals an honest, unfussy approach to the keyboard akin to that of two other major symphonists, Sibelius and Rubbra: like them, Wordsworth's primary concern seems to have been the expression of deep feeling – which makes the gentle story-telling of his miniatures for children all the more surprising. The pianist is that stalwart defender of Scottish piano composers, Christopher Guild – who grew up just a few miles along the Moray Firth from Wordsworth's Highland home overlooking Glen Feshie in the Cairngorms.TracksPiano Sonata in D Minor, Op. 13 (1938-39) (27:04) I. Kevin Byrne it's fair to say is a veteran of the Irish Metal Scene stretching back to the formation of Valediction in 2005. Myself and Kevin cover those years leading up to the release of their acclaimed debut album 'The Primitive Architecture' recorded in 2010/20011, by a relatively young Mick Richards at Track Mix Studios. In fact that bond with Mick was to prove fruitful when Valediction went their separate ways, with Kevin approaching Mick with plans for his solo project 'Sonus Mortis'. Six albums in nine years is an incredible outlay for an solo artist and there is plenty to cover in relation to how Kevin approaches song structures, lyrical themes and the build up to his current brilliant release 'Collapse The Mountain'. 1) "The Ecstasy" is a poem of incarnation. It is one of my favorite Donne love poems. The souls of lovers, that which truly loves, are sheathed in flesh: Because such fingers need to knit          That subtle knot which makes us man, So must pure lovers' souls descend          T' affections, and to faculties, Which sense may reach and apprehend . . . Love's mysteries in souls do grow,          But yet the body is his book.   2) "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning" was written by Donne to his pregnant wife, Ann More, on the occasion of his departure from England to continental Europe. This beautiful love poem is filled with Donne's wit and passion. Playing on an extended metaphor of twin compasses, the poem ends with these lines:   Such wilt thou be to me, who must,    Like th' other foot, obliquely run; Thy firmness makes my circle just,    And makes me end where I begun.   3) "For Whom the Bell Tolls," also called "No Man is an Island," is not technically a poem, but a paragraph taken from a "Meditation" on life's trials. It is, nevertheless, one of the Donne's most well-known and quoted works.   If you'd like to support us, donate through Paypal at Romanschapter5@comcast.net https://www.youtube.com/c/TheChristianAtheist/featured https://www.facebook.com/JnJWiseWords https://wisewordsforyouroccasion.wordpress.com   #poem #poetry #verse #literature #aestheticliterature #aesthetic #rhythmic #phonaesthetics #soundsymbolism #metre #prosaic #literarycomposition #poet #ambiguity #symbolism #irony #poeticdiction #muse #prosody #meter #metricalpatterns #rhymescheme #johndonne #donne #hymntochrist #thisismyplayslastscene #ahymntogodthefather #battermyheartthreepersondgod #breakofday #afever #forwhomthebelltolls #avaledictionforbiddingmourning #theecstasy

On this edition of Parallax Views, Paul Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Gould, authors of Invisible History: Afghanistan's Untold Story, Crossing Zero: The AfPak War at the Turning Point of American Empire, and now the novelized memoir The Valediction, join me to discuss their forty year journey investigating American Empire, the Cold War arms race, military Keynesianism and destruction of the civilian economy, covert operations, the rise of the peculiar ex-Trotskyites that came to be known as neocons, the politicization of intelligence vis-a-vis "Team B", the death of the SALT treaty, and the political maneuverings of the foreign policy heavyweight Zbigniew Brzezinski in the Jimmy Carter White House all through their attempts to understand the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. We begin the conversation by delving into Paul's work in the talk show business. Paul discusses how an anti-SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks) treay documentary led him to make a documentary that was pro-SALT. This led him to speak with the well-known economist John Kenneth Galbraith, who told him about some key Cold War hawk figures like Paul Nitsze. Liz explains how many thought the end of the Vietnam War and later the Carter Presidency would lead to a new era that would lead to a reinvestment in the American civilian economy rather than the Wall Street and military economy. The SALT treaties were part of this hope as were talks of peace and détente. Paul then goes on to explain what Paul Warnke told him about peace talks going back to Lyndon Johnson's Presidency. From there we jump into the topic of the neoconservatives and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Paul and Liz discuss the involvement of the virulently anti-Soviet Zbigniew Brzezinski in the Carter administration as National Security advisor. In this regard we talk about Paul and Liz's interview with Dr. Charles Cogan, chief of the Near East and South Asia Division in the CIA's Directorate of Operations (1979–1984), in which Cogan talked about asking Zbigniew Brzezinski about the "Afghan Trap", the idea that Brzezinski intentionally lured the Soviets into Afghanistan via covert operations, and Brzezinski's surprising response. This leads us to talk about Brzezinski's infamous interview with Le Nouvel Observateur in 1998 and the controversy surrounding it. From there we delve into a number of different odds and ends including the death of Adolph "Spike" Dubs; explaining what the Afghan Trap was; the relationship between Trotskyism, game theory, and neocons; Team B and the politicization of intelligence, the mujahadeen, the neoconservative casus belli, Cold War political theater, Zbigniew Brzezinski ad a Dr. Faustus character, late-stage imperial dementia, and much, much more. The Brzezinski "Afghan Trap Thesis" is authentic: Interview with Dr. Charles Cogan 2 8 2015 (Youtube) The Brzezinski Interview with Le Nouvel Observateur (1998) The Deep Research Behind the Valediction (Article "President Carter, Do You Swear to Tell the Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing But the Truth?" Minute Forty-Six: From Thor's Valediction to Coulson's Appropriation Joining us to discuss the royal and polite way Thor says goodbye and Coulson's own polite way of appropriating all of the Scientist Three's gear is Matt Carroll, one of the two co-hosts of the award-winning MCUCast and founder of the Stranded Panda Podcast Network. In the forty-sixth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Jane has no idea what to do after Thor kisses her hand. Her flustered behavior is adorable. Matt struggles with the fact that Thor falls in love with Jane by the end of the film but it does feel like they pull a lot of the romantic comedy tropes here to make this work. So to that end, if you can't buy into the rom-com nature and their meet-cute, you may struggle with this relationship. But is Thor interested in Jane at this point or just kissing the cute girl's hand? Regardless, Darcy and Erik curtsey and bow, respectively, and it's adorable. Especially Darcy. Which certainly holds true with her reactions so far in the film. Erik's bow is a bit more awkward and uncomfortable, but it's as if he feels compelled. It's great. In the background, you can see the paved road turns to dirt, giving away a bit of the old west town in which this was filmed. And have you ever noticed the Christmas Every Day shop on Main Street? Wow, does this feel like real small-town America. Let's not forget the Liquor Locker! The Scientists Three find SHIELD agents raiding her lab. Agent Coulson and SHIELD seem a bit more like a threat in this film. That feels new in the MCU. Well, there was a bit of that in Iron Man 2. But did you know that this was originally scripted to be Nick Fury? They couldn't get Samuel L. Jackson, though, so it was rewritten as Agent Coulson, which may be why he feels a bit different here. Erik clearly has heard of SHIELD though. Where? Will we find out in the future? The rest of the Scientists Three don't seem to have heard of them. This film really sets up this idea of a shadow government organization. Does that work for SHIELD? To that end, how hard is it to come up with acronyms for business names? Erik may say to Jane to let it go but Jane says no – this is her life's work up to this point. She's not ready to let it go. Was there a point in Erik's life when he was less professorial? Why does Agent Coulson say they're investigating a security threat? Is that a lie to create their cover-up? Or do they feel there is a security risk at this point? Why doesn't he call it out as an 084? But what was SHIELD looking for? We see some SHIELD agents. There are a lot. A lot more than the Scientists Three. But we can't really see any faces here. Perhaps it's an intentional feel where they all blend together as ‘agents.' The script says the back of the truck is loaded with Jane's Dark Matter analysis machine. Was that meant to tie into Malekith's dark matter dagger in Thor: The Dark World? What's funny about that, though, is that it looks like it's just loaded with camera gear from the crew. It doesn't look like scientific equipment from the Scientists Three. The Scientists Three go from saying goodbye to arguing with SHIELD agents, and we're here to talk about it all. Tune in! Dershowitz claims the manuscript could be older than Deuteronomy. More on the different speakers in Donne's "Songs and Sonnets."  The idea of the most capacious intelligence: the one who gets most others.  How this plays out in kinds of narrative, especially fantasy fiction.  Who gets whom better: Aslan or the White Witch? Voldemort or Dumbledore? Sauron or Gandalf?  Yoda or Palpatine?  The surprise when we're surprised that the good guys get the evil guys being a staple of narrative interest, because more generally being able to understand others' limitations is central to our assessment of literary characters.  Then on to the two poems: "To his Mistress" and a beginning of "A Valediction: forbidding Mourning."
