Send us a textWatches & Wonders 2025 is in the books, and in this episode I'm joined by Danny Milton to recall some of the biggest releases and news from the show. We talk about the new Land-Dweller from Rolex, and its unique Dynapulse escapement, which Danny had unique access to prior to the show. There was also plenty of other interesting releases this year in what turned out to be a pretty solid Watches & Wonders all around. Like most people, writer and filmmaker Jack Kelley thought Plato's account of Atlantis was just an allegory when he, during a vacation on the Greek island of Santorini, was drawn into a world of research that takes the Platonic story seriously. Even in that world, however, there are diverging opinions about the location of the lost civilization. Jack came across the work of Greek engineer and linguist George Sarantitis and thought: “This guy might actually have cracked it.” He made contact, and the collaboration that followed resulted in the newly released documentary The Atlantis Puzzle, based on Sarantits' groundbreaking findings (watch and give a review here or here). Taking Plato's account seriously is controversial. “The very idea of Atlantis is frightening to mainstream academic researchers. They could easily end up looking like fools. The risk-reward is not there. That keeps a lot of first-class minds from seriously addressing what this subject is really about. And Sarantitis is a first-class mind”, Jack says. George Sarantitis refused to believe the two Plato dialogues Timaeus and Critias, where Atlantis is discussed, were just nonsense fables. He retranslated the texts and realized that important concepts had been misinterpreted for centuries. For example, an ‘Atlantic pelagos' does not mean ‘The Atlantic ocean'. ‘Pelagos' is a lesser sea. Earlier translators had only made an assumption, because nobody had ever heard of an ‘Atlantic pelagos'. Sarantitis found a few other things that hadn't been well delineated. For instance, three words for ‘island' are being thrown around. This retranslation led him to the conclusion that ‘the pillars of Herakles', a crucial reference, probably doesn't mean the strait of Gibraltar, which completely changes the idea of where Atlantis may have been located. Sarantitis' surprising hypothesis is that the ‘pelagos' was a series of navigable inland megalakes in northwest Africa where one could sail to the empire known as Atlantis. It is a fact that there are a series of huge salt lakes in the area that indicate that there was once a large body of water, and we now know that the Sahara was a lot wetter at the time Plato points to. Then there is the much-talked-about Richat structure, the ‘Eye of the Sahara', which well matches Plato's description of the Atlantean capital. So, if there was a civilization in this area, why did it disappear? If the extreme climatological changes during the latter part of the Younger Dryas (matches Plato's time frame) were accompanied by earthquakes, tsunamis and other geophysical disasters, a civilizational collapse is plausible. Jack engaged preeminent earthquake expert Dr Scott Ashford for the documentary. “According to Ashford, Plato is accurately describing what the effects of the combination of these natural disasters would have been”, Jack says. Was Atlantis advanced? In Jack's mind, it was sort of advanced for its time but probably more of a hunter-gatherer than a bronze age kind of society. He does not subscribe to the more grand theories out there. But he does give other independent researchers credit for pushing the idea that mainstream academia is ignoring many signs of lost human worlds in lands that are now below water, not just the one Plato is talking about. There are hundreds of ancient flood myths, for example. “Clearly there were kingdoms, tribes, even empires that we don't have any names for today”, Jack says.

This week on the podcast, we're coming to you live from the Windup Watch Fair in Chicago, and we're thrilled to be joined for the second year in a row by James Stacey and Jason Heaton, who you almost certainly know as the co-hosts of The Grey NATO podcast. Blake Buettner and Kat Shoulders joined the TGN guys on stage in front of a live audience on Sunday afternoon of Windup weekend, for a wide ranging discussion that featured a recap of a Lake Michigan dive trip with Benrus the day before, insight into what goes into the decision to actually buy a watch, candid thoughts on some big new releases, and a proper evaluation of how to pronounce “Pelagos.” Just like last year, this is a two part episode, so be sure to look out for the rest of the conversation on TGN's feed tomorrow, which includes a great Q&A with Windup attendees. To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast — now available on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, and more. Hello and welcome to The HourTime Show, the official podcast of WristWatchReview.com. Your hosts this week are Victor (@vmarks on Twitter) and Nicholas (@nicholasadeleon). John is away this week. He sends his regards. **For a video version of this podcast, simply visit our YouTube channel.** This week, Victor and Nicholas primarily discuss three big topics: Seestern's new Pelagos homage and how it compares to similar pieces from the likes of Heimdallr, and why you'd want to spend $300 on an homage versus a rep; Rolex's certified pre-owed program; the Belhamel Contra A40; and some DIY watch project stuff. We also briefly mention some big New York Times article on replica handbags, which *we think* is relevant but we didn't actually read the article. We also bring back audio podcast chapters with this episode. Adding chapters tacks on several more minutes to post-production so hopefully someone out there appreciates them. If your podcast player supports chapters you can more easily skip around to different segments of the episode. Many of the most popular podcast apps, including Apple Podcasts, Overcast, and Pocket Casts, support podcasts, but I (Nicholas) don't know offhand if Spotify does. I guess we'll see! Thanks once again to Andrew Haworth for his help producing this week's episode. Keep it locked to WristWatchReview.com and @wristwatchreview on Instagram for more fun watch content. And feel free to come hang with us all day on Discord! Thank you for listening, and have a great week! -Nicholas, Tucson, AZ, May 7, 2023

It's a full house today on the Worn & Wound podcast, so brace yourselves for a spirited discussion on the watch that broke the internet last week: the all new Tudor Pelagos 39. Everyone's got a take on the new, smaller Tudor diver, and we're no exception. What do you think? Is this a must have dive watch? Will you be buying one? And, be honest: were you pronouncing “Pelagos” correctly before Tudor's immediately iconic video dropped? We also take a moment to talk about the new Grönefeld 1969 Delta Works, the first sports watch from the independent brand out of the Netherlands. And yes, it's a point of great pride for all involved that to our knowledge we're the only podcast to draw a tenuous connection between the Delta Works and the forgotten classic that is Last Action Hero. It will all (sort of) make sense when you listen. To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast — now available on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, and more. This week I try and fail to cover some Geneva Watch Days highlights. You see, right in the middle of everything, Tudor had to go and release the Pelagos 39. Not just a variation of an existing watch, the Pelagos 39 is likely to become the new “go-to” model by the brand. I go over where the Pelagos came from and what makes this new model different. And then… I still fail to talk about Geneva Watch Days because Fratello teamed up with Minase to make a new collaboration with the brand using a case that was previously only for sale in Japan. It's rad, and goes on sale soon, so I didn't want to miss it.As for Geneva Watch Days? I guess I'll get there next week. This week's episode is brought to you by the Labor Day Sale currently going on at the Windup Watch Shop. For this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick and David are in Switzerland, recording live from the ground while covering Geneva Watch Days 2022. To kick off the show, they first take a moment to catch up with Ariel and chat with him about his thoughts on why he feels that the western world needs to create new watch-buying rituals and ultimately find new occasions to purchase timepieces for each other, before then briefly discussing why esports might be a good way to reach the next generation of buyers. From there, it's all about new watch releases, and the trio discusses the brand-new Oris Divers Sixty-Five with the Caliber 400 movement and why it could easily be the only watch a person would ever need. Ariel also takes the opportunity to announce an upcoming event that aBlogtoWatch will be hosting at a local brewery in Los Angeles with Oris on September 6th, 2022, where the Oris Airstream trailer and its showcase of the company's history and innovation will be presented there (RSVP by emailing rsvp@ablogtowatch.com). The conversation then shifts to the opposite end of the price spectrum and the three hosts talk about ultra-expensive luxury sports watches, and whether or not brands like Greubel Forsey, MB&F, and H. Moser & Cie. are starting to challenge Richard Mille when it comes to creating the go-to sports watch for the mega-wealthy. After Ariel reveals his personal choice within the mega-expensive sports watch genre, he says goodbye to Rick and David who then head off to a few appointments to catch up with some of the various brands presenting live at Geneva Watch Days. First is a quick chat with the folks at MB&F, who offer some insight into the new Split Escapement EVO watches and reveal a hint about which one of the LAB editions is coming next, along with dropping a few hints about the model including that it won't be a Split Escapement watch. From there, the duo heads over to speak with Ulysse Nardin about its new gem-set rainbow novelties. Rick and David are both big fans of Ulysse Nardin and rainbow watches, and after having a thoroughly good time checking out the manufacturer's latest statement-piece releases, the pair head over to Maurice LaCroix to talk about its new Pontos watches, the importance of the Aikon collection, and why its retail partners are still the best way of telling the company's story and allowing it to connect with its customers. Although Tudor isn't specifically participating in Geneva Watch Days 2022, the brand still took the opportunity to launch a new watch, so Rick then sits down to talk with Ripley from aBlogtoWatch and Simon from Escapement24 to discuss the surprise release of the Tudor Pelagos 39. While Rick may still not believe that anything under 44mm is even a proper timepiece, the trio all agree that this new 39mm Pelagos is (almost) the model everyone has been asking them to make and that it's clear that Tudor is listening to its customers. Each week, the editors of the timepiece enthusiast publication aBlogtoWatch.com come together to discuss some of the latest new releases and hottest industry stories for the aBlogtoWatch Weekly news podcast program. Double trouble this week with the horological/photographic power couple that is Lydia Winters and Vu Bui. With a shared love of watches, photography and videography, it was only a matter of time before these passions combined into a YouTube channel, called (appropriately enough) Winters & Bui. We talk about their plans for the channel, the importance of authenticity and why quality content will always shine through. Naturally, we get some practical photography tips and find out about Lydia's love of Hasselblad. And while the shared couples watch might be the dream for many people, it isn't something that works for Vu and Lydia, so we get their take on inter-relationship watch trading and what it's like to actually wear (and scratch) a hype watch. But before all that, Felix and Andy talk about how Wordle can save the internet and why we need to stop comparing new releases (hello Omega!) to Rolex. This episode is sponsored by Edifice watches, find out more at Edifice Australia here. Want to be part of the OT: The Podcast community? Join our Discord! On today's episode, we've got stuff to say about 9.2, Bentolas becomes the first person other than Woolly to take on the mixed drink of the week, and we are drafting our top three favorite Mixed Drinks of the Week! If you'd like to, you can leave one at WarcraftRadio.com/directory. You can email us at ThrallsBallsPodcast@gmail.com. You can even leave one on iTunes if you've a mind to. You can tweet at us, as well. @ThrallsBallsPod If you have left one anywhere else, we aren't likely to have seen it. I want to take a minute to mention Warcraft Radio. This might feel like an ad, but it isn't. It's more like a badge of appreciation. We've mentioned offhand what WCR is, but it's essentially a podcast network. We're listed in their directory. WCR put a ton of work into maintaining their directory and their website, so if you like our podcast, go check out some other ones as well! Today we talk to James Lamb, a British independent watchmaker who has taken a decidedly (and deliberately) old-school approach to his debut Origin series. While it's easy to be wowed by the four enamel dials (each inspired by one of the four elements), take a minute to appreciate the amount of skill and care that goes into handcrafting each case from a bar of Argentium silver — from the lathe-work to the soldering and the final polishing, all of it is 100 per cent Lamb. Beyond the watch itself, we find out how Lamb went about creating his watch and went against the grain of feeling the need to polish every screw and bridge, instead focusing his skill and effort on the details that really make his watches stand out. Before all that, Andy and Felix accidentally chat about a bunch of blue watches from Blancpain, Tudor and Nomos. This episode is brought to you by NOMOS Glashütte. Today we chat about the Nomos Club Sport neomatik 42 date blue, an all-terrain Club on a brand new bracelet. Check it out here. Want to be part of the OT: The Podcast community? Join our Discord! Today on the podcast, Blake Buettner, Zach Weiss, and Zach Kazan sit down to talk about what is unquestionably one of the biggest watch releases of the year: the Tudor Pelagos FXD. What is the FXD? Well, if this were Wheel of Fortune, and you bought a few vowels, the “fixed” theme of the watch comes into focus. This iteration of the Pelagos had been the topic of much speculation in recent months as leaks began to hit social media, and the fixed lug bars, unusual bi-directional bezel, and notably thinner case profile offer something genuinely new in the Pelagos line. We walk through this watch's unique backstory, its connection to the Marine Nationale, and the extremely niche type of diving it was designed for. Later in the podcast, the team talks about some other recent releases of note, including a limited edition Nomos Club 36, and the latest from Benrus. Trevlig lyssning!

Episode 137 of The Grey NATO begs the question – “what if we were in charge?”. With a classic CEO-for-a-day dream scenario, Jason and James breakdown their co-CEO plans for some of TGNs favorite brands. The Pelagos gets a GMT, IWC goes deep on the Aquatimer, Rolex needs to think older, and Sinn basically just needs to keep up the good work (to mention only a few!). While we are not entirely confident that the TGN-boys would make passible watch brand CEOs, they certainly aren't short on ideas. From the get-go, Jason provides an update for his forthcoming novel – Depth Charge – and James gets bored of talking about just how little he is doing these days. As always, stay in the mix for a high-riding Final Notes with some much needed Danny MacAskill and a nod to the latest iteration of Top Gear America. Thanks so much for listening and be sure to hit the comments and let us know what big changes you would make if you could be a watch brand CEO for a day. 2:15 Depth Charge (Jason's Book!) https://bit.ly/3bGaG00 7:25 Jason's Aquastar Benthos 500 https://bit.ly/3d9WeBB 9:40 James' Explorer II https://bit.ly/3eOpqfR 51:03 Monochrome watches photoshop of Pelagos GMT http://bit.ly/1MfcGcc 59:35 Danny MacAskill “The Slabs” https://bit.ly/2YYd51Q 1:03:20 MotorTrend's Top Gear America https://bit.ly/3a2ATaX
Some might think that you need the ocean to spearfish, but ask Bryn Russel that question, and he might say otherwise. A self-taught speargun and knife craftsman, his passion for the sea lead him to create Pelagos, a brand dedicated to high-quality knives that perform as well as they look. It was great to chat with Bryn about how he is selling beautiful knives and spearguns from the land-locked state of Oklahoma! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Coming to you from an undisclosed location, the one and only Brodinkee! That's right, Spence, Spangler, and Buzz had a chance to shoot the breeze with the Watchfam's favorite memer, and this episode goes to 11!The guys have been very excited for this one, as I know you all can imagine. Brodinkee talks about his inspiration for the account, how it actually started as his wristshot account, and what it was like to have his wife find out he has a cult following of fellow watch nerds. Bro (for short) also gives us some insight into his creative process, describing how he stays current and seeks his inspiration. Sometimes memes take time, other times, they write themselves. I know he mentioned it in his instagram stories when it happened, but the fact that a certain travel clock DROPPED ON HIS BIRTHDAY is just pure gold. What is obvious to everyone who follows him is that he truly is a member of the Watchfam. We get into how he got into watch collecting. He talks about his friends who have helped enable this hobby along the way, the podcast they almost started (can you imagine!), and the podcast he suggested a name to (it stuck, and works perfectly!). From his 861 Speedmaster "barn find" to the Pelagos that got away, he is #watchfam through and through, and it was so much fun to get to know the person behind all those memes that hit a little too close to home!
