After Lorenna Bobbitt's husband John sexually assaulted her at their home in Virginia in the summer of 1993, she retaliated by waiting until he was asleep, she decided to fight back. Following the attack, Lorena fled the house in her car and eventually pulled over to the side of the road to call 911 and report the incident, at which time she was arrested. Though salacious, this incident of domestic violence would likely have gone unnoticed by the rest of the American public; however, at the time, debates about domestic violence and marital rape were raging and the Bobbitt case came to serve as an example of the consequences and effects of that violence, for arguments on both sides. As a result, the Bobbitt case became one of the most high-profile criminal cases in the country—and then it became a national joke. References Anolik, Lili. 2018. "Lorena Bobbitt's American Dream." Talk was never the finish line.Season 2 didn't ask you to just listen — it asked you to act. From engineers in Ramallah building tech for the overlooked, to a lawyer taking on a legal system stacked against her clients as well as herself, to getting tents and clean water into Gaza one delivery at a time, this season introduced us to people who refused to let conversation stop at words. In this finale, Amira and Ibrahim close out the season together, and like last season's finale, they're joined on camera by UTTN producer Evelyn Uzan. They sit down for an honest look back: what stirred them, what challenged them, and what it meant to spend a season amplifying people doing the work rather than just talking about it.Because a season built on action isn't finished when the mic turns off. "If you fail and you learn something from it, that is actually a success." Episode Summary In this episode, I sit down with Ben DeWalt of On Site Firearms Training and Erick Gelhaus of Cougar Mountain Solutions for an in-depth, no-nonsense discussion about firearms training, collaborative teaching, skill development, and the importance of a growth mindset on the range. Ben and Eric shared their experiences co-teaching pistol performance classes, how they balance speed and accuracy, the value of dry firing, and why ongoing education from other instructors is crucial for personal and professional growth. We dove into everything from handling failure, identifying the most overrated gadgets in the gun world, to the role of ego in the firearms industry. Ben and Eric also highlighted why shotgun training is gaining traction, how to structure effective practice with time constraints, and the importance of adapting instructional methods to best serve students.

In the summer of 1997, fear spread across the campus of Arizona State University as reports surfaced of women being attacked while walking home alone at night. Students were warned to stay alert, travel in groups, and avoid being out after dark. But no one expected the danger to strike in broad daylight. When 21-year-old Fiona Yu was found brutally murdered inside her own apartment, investigators described the crime as a frenzied blitz attack. With little physical evidence and only the belief that Fiona may have known her killer, police scrambled to stop whoever was responsible before they struck again. Then, two more women were attacked in eerily similar ways, raising fears that a predator was targeting women near campus.Connect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Instagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.com12 News (KPNX). In a reality marked by occupation, limited resources, and constant uncertainty, the work becomes about more than technology — it becomes about dignity, access, and the belief that people should be able to shape solutions for their own communities.Together, we explore the realities of building under constraint, investing in local talent, and creating impact that begins at home while resonating far beyond Palestine.Tune into this inspiring conversation about imagination, resilience, and the quiet power of people who continue to create despite the circumstances around them.Disclaimer: This episode was recorded on February 9, 2026. What began as a conversation did not stay there. It turned into persistence. Into urgency. Into late-night phone calls and constant coordination. Into people refusing to sit still. At the center of it was a question: What do the people of Gaza need right now, and how do we get it to them?Clean Shelter was born from that question, and from two women who refused to be bystanders. In this episode, we are joined remotely for the first time this season by Seba AbuDaqa and Tom Kellner, founders of the German NGO now working alongside teams on the ground in Gaza. But this work does not begin abroad. It begins inside Gaza itself. The volunteers there know what their communities need. They know the terrain, the shortages, and the risks. They know how to build, repair, and distribute under impossible conditions.Seba and Tom walk us through the logistics and daily problem-solving behind what they call “the bare minimum”: sanitary needs and shelter solutions for tens of thousands of Gazans. What sounds simple on paper requires resourcefulness, trust, and people on the ground who are willing to act. While the world debates the future of Gaza, Clean Shelter is urgently tending to its present, one tent, one desalination unit, and one toilet at a time. This is a conversation about refusing to let dialogue end at words, and about what happens when people carry it forward into action.Donate to Clean Shelter here, and be sure to check out HUMAN EYES - a powerful project with proceeds going directly to them.Disclaimer: This episode was recorded on December 1, 2025. Laws are meant to protect people, maintain order, and define what's fair. But what happens when the law is applied only to some, while denying rights to others? For Palestinian citizens of Israel, this is a daily reality. Laws meant to safeguard freedom of speech, movement, and expression are often used as tools of control, punishment, and exclusion, rights that exist on paper but are routinely denied in practice. In this episode, we sit with Hadeel Abu Salih, a human rights lawyer and activist at Adalah, to examine how Israeli law functions in practice for Palestinians, and how repression has sharply escalated since October 2023. Drawing on hundreds of cases, Hadeel exposes a legal system where speech can be criminalized before it's even expressed, students and academics are disciplined for political thought, and prolonged detention without trial has become routine. Alongside this, the hosts reflect on some of the fears and reservations they carry about being public in this moment. We trace the continuity from the policies following May 2021 to the sweeping crackdown after October 7, revealing how emergency measures have solidified into permanent governance. Hadeel also unpacks how apartheid legislation is deepening, not only through arrests and indictments, but through laws that threaten family life, movement, and collective presence. This episode explores law as lived experience, fear, endurance, and the cost of speaking out, and what it means to keep resisting from inside the courtroom.Be sure to explore Adalah's website to read reports, review cases, listen to their podcast, and of course, support their work by donating here.Disclaimer: This episode was recorded on November 25, 2025. Through strategic campaigns, it gives ordinary citizens the tools to create meaningful social and political impact. As a new father and strategist for societal transformation, Eran believes real progress begins from within. In this powerful episode, we sit down with Nimala Kharoufeh— an inspirational teacher, women's circle trainer, group facilitator, and the first Samara Yoga teacher in the Middle East. She holds over 14 accredited certificates in self-development and well-being. With 15 years of experience in local and international peacebuilding organizations, she specializes in youth and women's development, leadership, communication, and team building. As the director of the Palestinian Freedom School, and founder of the soon-to-open Sahwa Healing Center in Beit Jala, Nimala holds true to the symbolism of her name. Inside the Combatants for Peace office, Nimala reflects on what it means to grow up in a family split by IDs, to navigate a geography that keeps shrinking, and to carry the emotional weight of simply existing as a Palestinian. Yet she brings something rare: a pathway toward healing, inner awakening, and the reclamation of humanity in a world that tries to erase it.With striking vulnerability, she speaks about trauma, womanhood, community care, and the revolutionary choice to step out of victimhood and into responsibility. This same vision led her to create the Sahwa Healing Center— a community-rooted space now in its final stages of becoming a reality, where Palestinians will have access to grounding practices like yoga, meditation, women's circles, trauma-informed healing, and much more. With your support, the doors of this space can open sooner rather than later, bringing healing and connection to a community that needs it.If you've ever wondered what steadfastness looks like, what healing inside occupation feels like, or what it takes to keep showing up when everything around you is falling apart—this episode is for you.Listen, share, and—if you're able—consider donating to help bring the Sahwa Healing Center to life. In this episode, Danielle Cantor — co-mother and community organizer with Culture of Solidarity, a grassroots mutual aid collective — opens up on what it means to live and act from a place of radical care in unbearable times. Culture of Solidarity builds networks of care, resistance, and justice from the ground up, bringing together activists, organizers, and neighbors to meet urgent needs while confronting systems of inequality and oppression. Their work spans food justice, political education, anti-war organizing, and support for marginalized communities in their ongoing struggles for dignity and liberation. Through her honesty, weariness, and courage, Danielle reveals the emotional cost of organizing and the strength it takes to keep showing up.She reflects on how empathy can become an action, on what solidarity truly means when facing the realities of occupation, and on her community's commitment to care that doesn't shy away from uncomfortable truths. From standing in silent vigils for murdered children in Gaza, to leaving a beloved community space in the name of integrity, Danielle reminds us that compassion without accountability is hollow — and that a different kind of future is imperative, one rooted in justice, equality, and deep care.If you were inspired to join any of the activities mentioned in this episode, follow @twinkyyyy and @culture_of_solidarity on Instagram for updates! The network provides opportunities for the roughly 21% of the population who face systemic barriers.Mahdi's proactive spirit also led to the launch of the Harmony SOS app, developed in a moment of urgency during the recent war with Iran to support and safeguard his community. In this conversation, Mahdi shares how he transformed criticism into determination, why he chose to channel his activism into building networks and tools, and what it means to take action differently in pursuit of long-term change. Marcus Daniell, a decorated tennis player and Olympic bronze medalist, understands this better than most. He founded High Impact Athletes to channel that influence toward causes that measurably improve lives. When I spoke with Marcus, he shared how the transition from tennis to philanthropy wasn't sudden. As soon as he began earning enough from his career, he started giving back—carefully. "I didn't really trust the charities that I'd grown up around, and I wanted to do my own research," he said. That research led him to the concept of effective giving: doing the most good per dollar. What started with a personal 1% pledge grew into something much bigger. "There was a greater purpose to the grind of being a tennis player," Marcus said. "Every match that I won had something bigger off the back of it."That sense of purpose eventually inspired High Impact Athletes. Marcus guessed he'd have to persuade fellow athletes one by one, but the response surpassed expectations. "Very quickly it became obvious that there was a real appetite amongst the athlete community for something they could trust."Today, the organization has over 230 elite athletes across 50 sports and 35 countries. They're not just giving—they're amplifying impact by inspiring fans to do the same. "Athletes have a place in society where they have a really powerful voice," Marcus explained. "They can cut through different levels of society."The group recently partnered with High Rocks, a global fitness event series, to expand peer-to-peer fundraising. Participants can support causes like global health, climate change, mental health and women's empowerment. While High Impact Athletes isn't currently running a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign, the model it showcases is one worth noting. It proves that purpose and influence can merge to make philanthropy more effective and more human. The emotional impact is tangible. One athlete shared with Marcus that his High Impact Athletes key rings, earned for hitting donation milestones, were as meaningful as any sports medal. "That really touched me," Marcus said. This isn't just about giving. It's about creating lasting meaning from influence—and Marcus is helping athletes do just that.tl;dr:Marcus Daniell shares how Olympic-level tennis success led him to a life of purpose-driven philanthropy.High Impact Athletes empowers elite athletes to give effectively and mobilize fans for global good.Marcus explains that charity effectiveness varies greatly, making donation impact a key focus for change.Through partnerships like High Rocks, High Impact Athletes expands reach via peer-to-peer fundraising events.Marcus reveals his superpower—dealing with failure—and how resilience fueled both his athletic and nonprofit journeys. How to Develop Dealing with Failure As a SuperpowerMarcus Daniell describes his superpower as the ability to productively deal with failure. He explains that this skill is essential for professional athletes, who face constant challenges and losses. “In order to be a successful tennis player, you must be able to deal with failure productively,” Marcus said during today's episode. He emphasizes the importance of processing setbacks, learning from mistakes, and moving forward with renewed focus.Marcus shared a moving example from the 2016 Rio Olympics. After losing a first-round tennis match with match points against Canada, he and his partner, Michael Venus, were devastated. Though it took hours to process the emotions, they eventually had a heartfelt conversation, owning their mistakes and vowing to return stronger. This commitment paid off, as the duo later earned a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, a triumph Marcus cherishes deeply.Tips for Developing Resilience:Process Emotions: Allow yourself time to feel and understand your disappointment before moving on.Own Your Mistakes: Acknowledge your role in setbacks without dwelling on them.Commit to Growth: Use failure as a motivator to improve and set new goals.Find Perspective: Compare challenges to broader contexts to reduce their emotional weight.Focus on the Future: Create a tangible plan to move forward, shifting energy toward progress.By following Marcus' example and advice, you can make resilience a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileMarcus Daniell (he/him):Founder and Executive Director, High Impact AthletesAbout High Impact Athletes: At HIA we are transforming how sport serves the world. We connect world-class athletes with world-class charities—organizations that bring a high-performance mindset to making positive change. Our athlete community is a star-studded lineup of world champions, Olympic champions, world record holders and league professionals taking action and making a difference. Despite sport's immense potential to drive change, there's a critical gap between possibility and reality. Not all charities are created equal. Every year, billions flow into feel-good causes and foundations with limited outcomes, chasing nice stories over tangible progress. Less than 1% of global philanthropy follows the data to identify and support the highest-performing charities.Athletes have seized their place, not just in sport, but in society, leading conversations and commanding global attention on and off the field. Given the right platform, they can inspire the world to solve two critical problems in philanthropy: how much we choose to give, and where our giving goes. Known for his sportsmanship and powerful presence on court, he competed at the highest levels of the sport, reaching Grand Slam quarterfinals and representing New Zealand in numerous Davis Cup ties.Beyond his athletic achievements, Daniell has distinguished himself as a leading advocate for effective altruism in sport. He founded High Impact Athletes, a nonprofit connecting elite athletes with the world's most effective charities, and pledged to donate at least 10% of his lifetime earnings to high-impact causes. His leadership has garnered respect across the tennis world and beyond, including election to the ATP Player Council.Residing in New York and recently retired after a 17-year professional career, Daniell remains a powerful voice for using sport as a platform for good. OK, fine, I podfaded. Other client projects took priority, and it's been awhile.  But today was the perfect day to bring back The JAG Show.Google Podcasts, as of April 3rd, is no longer available to listen to shows on.  Users are going to have to go elsewhere.  If you want to take your subscriptions with you, you can TRY.  Here's Google's how-to. https://support.google.com/youtubemusic/thread/249139848/migrate-your-podcast-shows-from-google-podcasts-us-only-%F0%9F%87%BA%F0%9F%87%B8?hl=enMeanwhile, Apple Podcasts has unveiled auto-transcriptions, beginning with iOS version 17.4.   I found the transcriptions to be pretty good, except that there are no timestamps or speaker labels.  I found it very difficult to upload my own transcript, and my podcast host (Simplecast) advised me to just use Apple's automatic transcript for now.   Apple did not give podcast hosts an early heads up about this, and they are playing catchup.Speaking of Podcast Hosts, Spotify for Podcasters (formerly Anchor) is the decisive leader for episodes published in March, 2024.  I'll tell you why I'm very lerry of using Spotify as a host, though. Finally, Edison Research's Infinite Dial survey is out.  This is THE benchmark survey for podcast listening every year.  I'll go through some key takewaways on podcasting being at an all time high, its growth among women, and its potential to steal ad dollars from television. As always, reach out with any questions.  jag@jagindetroit.com

On August 6, 1978, the body of thirty-five-year-old bar owner Jack Tupper was found in a vacant lot in the Bronx, just across the street from the local firehouse. His face had been severely slashed, his head and body badly beaten, he had been shot seven times, and finally, he had been set on fire. Witnesses reported seeing a small group of men in the lot attempting to set fire to a box earlier that day, including three witnesses who identified former racehorse trainer Howard “Buddy” Jacobson as one of the men, and one who was able to provide detectives with the license plate number of the car they were driving.Buddy Jacobson was quickly arrested for Tupper's murder and the story quickly became New York's latest scandal: Former horse trainer murders man in love triangle.
