What if I told you that you can cultivate an engaged, supportive community of fans around your business where people clamor to buy anything you offer and never leave because your community is such an important part of their lives and identities? My guest, Mark Schaefer is the author of Belonging to the Brand, Why Community is the Last Great Marketing Strategy. In an age of AI and automation where even many global brands are losing market share and relevance, Mark believes that community is the last refuge for preserving our humanity and ensuring brands, businesses, and non-profits stand out. As Mark explains in his book, and as we discussed in this episode, building a community goes way beyond simply amassing a following. Social media followers and casual readers or viewers are a weak relational link. According to Mark Schaefer, the real magic happens when you're able to bring people together so they connect to one another and find a sense of belonging within your brand community. Once you create a community, your organization becomes a home for your audience – a place where they find meaning. And, a sense of meaning is often what is missing from many people's lives today. For all of our technological advancements and social progress, many people feel lonely or socially isolated. As Mark says in his book, we humans are “wired for community,” which can be hard to find in a world that is so virtual and where remote work is common. The demand for community has, perhaps, never been greater than at any time in human history. If you can help fulfill your audience's need for belonging and community, then you will acquire a tribe of loyal supporters and repeat customers. According to Mark's thesis, which I believe is correct, building a community is how organizations can make the greatest impact and drive the biggest outcomes if they're willing to put in the time and work into making their community grow. Creating a community requires long-term thinking and an investment of time and energy, but it will pay off for those who commit to it, as Mark explains on the podcast and in his book. In this conversation, Mark and I spoke about the importance of community from both a marketing and a sociological perspective. He also shared interesting case studies of people who found success by building communities around their brands. From a business and marketing standpoint, having your own community on an owned channel also strengthens your brand long-term, dramatically increases customer loyalty and retention, and lessens your reliance on the whims of social media algorithms and changing markets. In this episode, we discussed his “Belonging to the Brand,” published in 2022, but you should also check out his new book that just came out, "Audacious: How Humans Win in an AI Marketing World." Why Community? It's easy to feel despair about climate change and environmental destruction. But despair can make it hard to forge connections and take action. According to emotion researchers, hope means believing that you have the power to improve problems, rather than ignoring them. One possible source of hope? Community building events, where diverse groups of activists can find common ground. What is Bioneers?Climate Break spoke with Teo Grossman, Senior Director of Programs and Research for the longstanding environmental conference Bioneers, about how community building events like the Bioneers conference foster hope and catalyze action. Now in its 34th year, Bioneers is an interdisciplinary environmental organization whose annual conference brings together environmental advocates and innovators from a wide variety of disciplines to share stories and brainstorm solutions. Grossman joined Bioneers in 2014 but first spoke there while still a college student in the early 2000s. He says his time at Bioneers has convinced him that community events and storytelling are powerful tools for change. Bioneers's HistoryThroughout its history, Bioneers has been home to new ways of thinking about environmental activism. The annual conference helped spawn major climate organizations like 350.org and inspired some of Michael Pollan's early work on the food system. Grossman also highlights its role in advancing the Rights of Nature legal movement. Rights of Nature seeks to recognize nature itself – like bodies of water and endangered species – as having legal rights. In 2008, Bolivia became the first country to include explicit rights for nature in their constitution. Other countries have since followed suit. Bioneers TodayBioneers has expanded since its inception, and now includes year round media and educational programming in addition to its annual conference. Grossman says they're especially proud of their Native-led Indigeneity Program, which includes youth leadership scholarships and forums. This year's conference includes speakers from throughout the world of climate and environmental justice, including political scientist Leah Stokes, clean-tech entrepreneur Danny Kennedy, and One Fair Wage President Saru Jayaraman. Also on the agenda? Conversations about the role fiction writing and narrative can play in restoring hope to the environmental movement, hosted by science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson and essayist Rebecca Solnit. Bioneers is holding its annual conference April 6-8 in Berkeley. You can learn more about the conference on their website.Other Resources for Finding CommunityIn addition to Bioneers, there are plenty of other ways to find hope and connect with the environmental movement. Interested in making decarbonization your job? Resources like Climatebase and Work on Climate offer centralized job listings and career support. You can also seek workshops and seminars to hear new perspectives on environmental issues. International organizations like Resources for the Future host lectures and workshops to highlight ongoing research, while in the Bay Area, local groups like the SF Federal Reserve and the Commonwealth Club's Climate One host lectures both in person and online. Looking for ways to take direct action? Databases like the CA Climate Action Portal map climate action by local government. Research the climate action – or inaction – your local government is doing to find ways to get involved. You may be able to attend public meetings for your energy providers, where you can meet other constituents and advocate for just and renewable energy. For example, San Francisco CCA Clean Power SF holds regular meetings over zoom that are welcome to the public. To go even bigger, attend public meetings by statewide regulatory agencies like the CPUC, which oversees the rates and investments of California utilities like PG&E. About the GuestTeo Grossman is Senior Director of Programs and Research for Bioneers, where he helps lead both conference development and Bioneers's year-round media production. He studied environmental science and management as a Doris Duke Conservation Fellow at UC Santa Barbara and first began working with Bioneers as a Program Manager in the early 2000s. What does it take to host an event with 14000 people? What mindset does it take to fill an arena? Him500 is a public figure, thinking about his audience, educating his community – and filling arenas and masterminding events as he goes and grows. Him500 (AKA Marcus Barney) is a business mentor who got his real estate license when he was 19 and learned the principles of leveraging credit which are some of the skills he'd one day pass on to others in his community. He also went to a live event and told his moms that one day he'd be packing out arenas. And now he's filling Madison Square Gardens, combining an appreciation of in-person community with teaching those that dare to dream that your credit score is your financial superpower. Him500's story of ambition and determination earns Rudy's respect. For those of us Living The Red Life, we can take a leaf out of the book of this business mentor that's blowing up – and making others rich alongside him. Check @Him500 out now, this guy is the real deal.“Mindset-wise is looking at: where is my audience? What would make them come? I know they watch me, but what is the extra whipped cream on top? Why Community?
We've got a special episode this week. You may recall a couple of weeks ago, I shared an episode of The Rise – The Community Commerce Marketing Show in which I talked to author and marketing thought-leader Jay Baer about his Time to Win research. This week, I share another episode of The Rise for similar reasons. Mark Schaefer is another marketing industry expert and author-speaker type. He and I have been friends and collaborators for several years. I've always enjoyed his perspective on the marketing world. He actually authored one of the first big books about influence marketing called Return on Influence. Well worth the read, though it's a few years old now. Well, Mark has a new book out now called Belonging to the Brand. The subtitle of the book is “Why Community is the Last Great Marketing Strategy.” As you might expect for a guy who leads marketing for CIPIO.ai, which is the Community Commerce Marketing Company, this book immediately won me over. It's chock full of goodness so having Mark on The Rise was a no-brainer. But his insights and ideas are very relevant for us on Winfluence, too. Your content creators and influencers you work with are extensions of your community. If you do it well, they become beacons both in and for your community to stay connected, engaged and informed. Today, we're going to watch and listen to that episode of The Rise and learn more about Mark's new book, his take on why community is the last great marketing strategy and a lot more. You can subscribe to The Rise at cipio.ai/podcast or by searching for The Rise – The Community Commerce Marketing Show wherever you get your podcasts. The show's also stream each Wednesday at 2 p.m. Eastern, 11 a.m. Pacific on CIPIO.ai's LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter channels. I often simulcast it on my Twitter channel, too. Make a note on your calendar to check it out, if you're interested. This week, though, you don't have to do anything more than you're doing now. I'm going to play an episode of The Rise from a couple weeks back when my pal Mark Schaefer came on to talk about Belonging to the Brand. Learn more about your ad choices. Today, we hear from listeners about jumping in - getting going and addressing the thing that holds you back. No Show Friday or Monday Unloose the Goose is a hit! (Hosting update) Tales from the Prepper Pantry Sometimes you need a pantry reset Spreadsheet (Next level tracking & Why) Community pantry concept Corn Salsa Recipe, feedback #MYThree Things Weekend Edition Operation Independence HRC is launching something really cool this week or next - stay tuned Basecamp has its new tenant - Jenni Main topic of the Show: jump Synchronicity - you know how it seems like when you think about something and then start talking about it that you find other people are also thinking about it? Last week I got pretty sick. It started the Friday before last, ebbed a bit over the weekend, then hit like a ton of bricks on Monday morning. It completely derailed the day - I had been all excited to go into the week kicking ass and taking names. Instead I spent much of the day in bed. SO I thought I would see what would happen if I asked the community to do their own podcast segments on the topic of Jump. I am not sure how many “comment” submissions I got, -- too hard to keep track from bed -- but we got two audio clips that I thought I would play to kick us off. So Jump. The topic from last week that is not this week. All year, I have shared with you ways to increase independence, shared my struggles and successes with my word of the year, grow. And things have been really weird this year with coronavirus, rioting and an increasingly divided atmosphere. Sometimes it really feels daunting to be out on my own in an an environment where the following is not only possible, but looking more and more likely: Additional supply chain issues leading to civil unrest A full blown depression A real estate market crash Massive layoffs from an educational system that society is learning they do not really need Humans are still animals under our sophistication and sometimes animals lash out. But there is a bigger issue in society and that is the oligarchy that uses the ruse of division, the ruse of peaceful freedom, the ruse of progress and diversity to push an agenda that is the opposite. As we see more people willing to open fire on someone who is or is not wearing a mask, or to throw a child in juvie for not doing homework, we start to see the true colors of those in control. And when you first see it, you just want to tear it down. But using their system to change their system is like heading to the casino and expecting to win against the house. You may have times where you get ahead for a bit, but house rules = house wins. The only way to get ahead for the long term is not to play the house. You’ve heard me say freedom aint hard, but it takes work. That is because freedom is very very simple. It means that you have no business in other people’s business and they have no business in yours, so long as no one is getting hurt. And this thing is very very hard to do consistently in part because we have to let assholes be assholes so long as they are not causing harm. But enough about that - as we navigate this coming instability in the economy and in society, how do we best set ourselves apart from the harm? Because as you dig deep into your fear of all that is going on, while there may be a fear of getting sick and dying under it all, the bigger fear is all these coming crashes that may happen might also cause you to struggle or fail. Listen to that one again. There is no certainty in anything in that sentence is there? Lots of maybes and mights. As we become more aware of patterns and impacts of the decisions that the oligarchy is forcing on the people, we can see where things will likely go and it is scary. And this fear is holding you back. This fear is how you are controlled from the outside. This fear keeps you in your bad relationship, your go nowhere job, your habit of debt slavery. And while the fear may be justified, fear is an emotion. One that should stop you from putting your head in a lions mouth, but not one that should stop you from handling that mud wasp nest on the wall outside your laundry room. (BTW I have a mud wasp nest to deal with outside my laundry door). There is a difference between acting rashly consequences be damned and conquering your fear to take action on your own behalf. So when I started thinking about this year, about my own choices, about the fear of failure, about the fear of a societal meltdown -- all I can see is a bunch of stuff out of my control. And the choice is clear: spend hours online fretting over what might happen, what probably will happen actually, -- or spend hours growing food, building Holler Roast Coffee. But it is hard to jump. This jump is not a baby step toward more financial independence. What we are looking at now is a big ol’ jump into the great unknown. Is it good to jump or bad? Alas, the answer is “It depends”. It is a gift to see the potential direction that all the societal division in the world is leading us to. Why a gift? Because that same skill that we have all been developing gives us the same sight into what is likely to happen when we take a jump. So while you may be trying to decide if you should launch your new business, While you are trying to make these decisions, I think you will find you already have. You have the ability to make things work. You have the ability to push through adversity. You have the ability to analyze what is likely to happen, to find someone who is more versed in a topic than you are and get their perspective, to weigh it then make your own decision. So today, as you are looking at that next jump. Look hard - if the jump ahead of you is not right, then shift focus and take a different jump. But dont dont dont let the current environment of division keep you from jumping. Don’t let them steal another moment of your time focusing on their theatrics. Don’t waste precious time on those who wish to enslave you, instead spend that time improving something, jumping toward something that makes your life better, more stable, closer to the life you want to live. Only you can build the things you want into your life and wasting time asking permission to do this is part of the problem. As we look to the fast approaching end of the year, take a moment, look ahead and take that jump. Because you are the only person who can. Thank you Make it a great week! Song: GUYS! HER ADDICTION Today Deanna shares her journey through addiction from a young girl experimenting with alcohol and how that evolved into drinking and drugging well into her 30's. As a high functioning addict - it was not until the secret she had been hiding came to the forefront, that she eventually made the decision to seek help and, once and for all, fully address the root of her struggle with alcohol and drug. THE TRANSITION After recovery, Deanna's next battle was to tackle was her debt. She was not sure what to do and found herself very overwhelmed. She drew upon her experience from recovery and began attacking her debt very strategically. In 3.5 years she was able to pay off $47,000.00. She did this by doing something a lot of people in the forties would not do....she moved back in with her parents. It was a humbling experience - but it also allowed her to attack her debt fiercely, she was putting 90% of her income towards debt, and because of this BIG MOVE - she reached her goal of debt freedom 2017. Deanna's Key Components to Getting Out of Debt Budget - Zero-based Budget Accountability Method for paying off (Snowball/vs. Avalanche) Intensity The Importance of Community Deanna also credits her sobriety and her debt-freedom journey to Community. She suggests that anyone new to Financial Independence seek out community. Seek people and/or groups out. Facebook. Local Meet-ups. Podcasts. Blogs. Books. FIRE community! Why Community? It’s important to surround yourself with like-minded people. They provide you with encouragement as well as get advice and tips.
