Living in a city that never sleeps, like Las Vegas, taught me a valuable lesson about the nature of friendships. The hustle and bustle often blurred the lines between acquaintances and true friends. Inspired by insights from Travis Chapel and Marissa Franco, I share how vulnerability and genuine curiosity can help distinguish and deepen these connections. As we navigate the complexities of adult life, it becomes increasingly vital to reflect on our own roles in fostering these relationships and to pursue meaningful connections amidst our busy schedules. In this episode of the Weekly Drop, we explore the art of nurturing deep friendships through intentional actions and vulnerability. Drawing inspiration from Laura Tremaine's "Share Your Stuff, I'll Go First," I recount personal stories about the transformative power of reaching out during difficult times without expecting anything in return. We delve into the essence of consistent communication and its role in transforming acquaintances into true friends, as outlined in "Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World." Learn how embracing vulnerability and openness can lead to stronger bonds and turn conflicts into opportunities for growth.

“Addressing loneliness is a public health issue as important as tobacco or obesity”.In a world that is more interconnected than ever via technology and social media, why do so many of us feel lonely? And how can we change that?Dr. Vivek Murthy, the 21st Surgeon General of the United States is the man putting loneliness at the top of the public health agenda. Nominated by Barack Obama and Joe Biden as ‘the Nation's Doctor', his ground-breaking work on the physical and mental impact of social disconnection is changing the narrative around loneliness and shifting much of the shame and stigma that exist around this topic. In this significant conversation Dr. Murthy and Annie discuss what loneliness actually looks like, their own personal stories of loneliness and tips for how you can address loneliness in your own life.To find out more:Twitter: @Surgeon_General Instagram: @u.s.surgeongeneral Facebook: @U.S. Surgeon General For all of Dr. Murthy's priority issue areas, please visit surgeongeneral.gov/prioritiesYou can buy a copy of Dr. Murthy's book ‘ Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World here: https://www.vivekmurthy.com/together-bookDr. Murthy also hosts his own podcast called House Calls with Dr. Vivek Murthy, you can find it anywhere you listen to podcasts or at surgeongeneral.gov/housecallsLoneliness charities: https://www.samaritans.org/ and https://www.campaigntoendloneliness.org/Annie's article about loneliness:https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/jul/09/dj-annie-macmanus-it-was-a-shock-to-realise-i-was-lonelyChanges is a deaf friendly podcast, transcripts can be accessed here: https://www.anniemacmanus.com/changes Hosted on Acast. Please enjoy this Encore presentation of Tricia and Doro's conversation with Dr Vivek Murthy. This was originally released on October 6, 2020. Dr. Vivek Murthy served as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States from December 2014 to April 2017. During this time, Dr. Murthy created initiatives to tackle the United States' most urgent public health issues, which included addition, chronic stress, and demystifing vaccines. In addition to his role as U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Murthy also served as the Vice Admiral of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, where he commanded a uniformed service of 6,600 public health officers, serving the most underserved and vulnerable populations in over 800 locations domestically and abroad. He worked with thousands of Commissioned Corps officers to strengthen the Corps and protect the nation from Ebola and Zika and to respond to the Flint water crisis, major hurricanes, and frequent health care shortages in rural communities. Recently, Dr. Murthy published “Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World”, which looks at loneliness as a public health concern and explores the ways in which we can overcome it. We are honored to be able to share this special conversation with you, which was also featured in this year's 2020 Co-Mindfulness Summit.
What is loneliness? It's a feeling a lot of people are having nowadays. And if we can get to the heart of this question, we can come up with some strategies to minimize it for ourselves. Cigna conducted a study in 2022 and revealed that 58% (!) of people say they always or sometimes feel like people don't know them well.So today I want to talk about loneliness. I want to talk about its definition, the 3 types that researchers have found, and why I think having an understanding of the concept of loneliness can help us combat it. Loneliness does not have to be an elusive mystery. There are things we can do to redirect our energy and slowly chip away at this feeling so we can all feel a little less lonely. In this episode you'll hear about:The definition of loneliness, and how it differs from social isolation. Isolation is a risk factor for loneliness, but it is not loneliness3 dimensions of loneliness: intimate or emotional loneliness, relational or social loneliness, and collective lonelinessWhy some of our loneliness can be blamed on our expectations that come from societal messages, pop culture, mass media, social media, or even expectations we're holding on to about a certain friendshipHow to recalibrate our expectations by ignoring the the shiny, unrealistic highlight reels of someone else's life in favor of celebrating the quiet moments we have with friends that may not be that interesting from the outside looking inThe incredible value of pouring into our “weak ties” and building a broader support system, rather than focusing on one or two relationshipsResources & LinksLearn more about loneliness at Campaign to End Loneliness and read their facts and statistics about loneliness here.Check out the book Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World by Vivek H. We need a modicum of vitality to simply be alive in this time. And we're in an enduringly tender place. Have you heard? Public health experts now define loneliness as an epidemic in our country. But just what is an epidemic? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says epidemics can refer to a disease or other specific health-related behavior (smoking, for example) with rates clearly above the expected occurrence in a community or region. “We now understand in the rapidly growing field of traumatology, those kinds of traumas can be more damaging to our nervous system regulation and the state of our brain than adverse childhood experiences.” - Dr. Lissa Rankin Dr. Lissa Rankin didn't expect to go down a particular path when she left her promising career as an OBGYN in 2007. The plan was to focus on her own health and well-being during a two-year sabbatical, but she soon came face-to-face with people who were doing all the right things – eating well, yoga, and other popular wellness practices – yet they were some of the sickest people she had ever met. When she started asking them deep-rooted questions about their lives, her passion and purpose suddenly revealed itself. She realized what was holding people back from feeling better – developmental trauma. In today's episode, Dr. Michelle Robin invites Dr. Rankin to unpack the story behind what made her go around the globe to collect tools from the world's medicine bag (from experts, traditions, faith healers, spiritual healers, energy healers). She was on a quest to find out how these things could transform lives – especially for those who weren't aware they experienced developmental trauma growing up. She'll also share about her latest book release called Sacred Medicine, and why developmental trauma is such a danger to our nervous system and our brain health. About Today's Guests: Lissa Rankin, MD, is a mind-body medicine physician, author of seven books, founder of the Whole Health Medicine Institute, and mystic who researches radical remission, trauma-informed medicine, and spiritual healing. Her TEDx talks have been viewed over 5 million times, and she starred in two National Public Television specials – Heal Yourself: Mind Over Medicine and The Fear Cure. Lissa's interest in the link between loneliness and disease led her to spearhead her latest project. Heal At Last, a non-profit organization which aims to bring effective trauma healing and spiritual healing methods to anyone ready for the deep dive of healing. Hello So Deep Peeps! Welcome to That's So Deep. This is the podcast where we try to root out loneliness one conversation at a time. Today we are talking about Loneliness: What Is It? How Does It Feel? And What Can I Do About It? Some deep things we cover:What is Loneliness? Mental health professionals define it as the gap between the level of connectedness that you want and what you have. It turns out that loneliness is incredibly subjective.Loneliness is a Distress Signal: Just like hunger tells us we need food and thirst tells us we need water, loneliness tells us we need connection. We Often Don't Recognize That We Are Lonely: Loneliness is tricky to identify because we have these “weapons of mass distraction” called phones that help us numb out our need for connection.Work Centered Lives vs. People Centered Lives: Our world does not put people first. It puts work first and we are lonelier and sicker than ever. What would our world look like if we truly put people first?Tend and Befriend Instinct: It turns out that in times of distress, people often help one another. Helping others is a great way to cure a lonely heart.Take-aways:Loneliness is Often Masked by Overwhelm, Boredom or Feeling Unsettled: If you're scrolling through your phone aimlessly, chances are, you might be lonely. What can you do to feel more connected? What kind of connection are you wanting and how can you achieve that?Lend a Hand When You're Lonely: Find ways to volunteer or help out a friend when you're feeling lonely. It turns out that helping someone else feel like they matter helps you feel like you matter.Find Common Ground: If you struggle to find ways to connect with your loved ones, lean hard into the things that you do connect on. By leaning into the areas where you do connect, you are building the groundwork for deeper relationship. We want to have a conversation with you! There are many ways to connect with us. Rustic. Refined. Cutesy. Elegant. Modern. Traditional. No matter your tastes, there's a place to suit you in today's online rental market. What you probably don't go looking for, though, is a person who comes with dream destination.Laurel Moffatt examines the boom in the short-term rental economy which has had a perverse effect on the life of the modern city. Even though we travel to more interesting locations, the sector has disrupted or further disintegrated social connections, particularly when a city has a high volume of listings. The antidote to the problem of loneliness, though, is not medication, but human connection. Forget artfully arranged towels and bowls of fresh lemons on the bench. Connection with others and the gift of one another's presence is the truly beautiful thing.LINKSMore numbers about the worth of the sharing economy.“The Airbnb Effect on Housing and Rent,” Forbes, Feb 21, 2020.Vivek, Murthy, M.D. Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World. But perhaps you'd rather visit Jerry's Lakehouse than read these articles? This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Athletic Greens, and InsideTracker. Community is medicine, just like food or sleep. Without community, we can become isolated, which has been found to be connected with inflammation and can even negatively impact immune response. In today's episode, I talk with Radha Agrawal, Dan Buettner, and Dr. Vivek Murthy about why community matters, what we have learned from cultures that prioritize community in their population, and how to take care of our needs first before giving to others.Radha Agrawal is the Co-founder, CEO, and Chief Community Architect of Daybreaker, the early morning dance and wellness move-ment. From Project BFF HQ, Terri and Manya riff about loneliness and how having friends helps combat it.We thrive when we are connected. And social connections are the key to happiness and health. Is more better? Maybe, if we are talking about ice cream. What about if we are talking about collaboration? Rob Cross would argue that we can become overwhelmed by all the connecting and collaborating. Pre-pandemic we spent 85% of our time in collaborative activities, like e-mail, phone calls, meetings… That is higher today. Rob is the author of Beyond Collaboration Overload: How to Work Smarter, Get Ahead, and Restore Your Well-Being. The book is a culmination of research on mapping the patterns of connectivity and collaboration among high performers. It's not that they didn't collaborate; however, they chose how they used their time and strategically connected. Rob shares why we tend to overextend ourselves and what we can do with the time we get back. Our well-being is tied to our healthy relationships and reducing the micro-stressors. Imagine if you had two years to travel the globe in order to better understand happiness. Where would you go? I'm assuming the Nordic countries who I hear always rank high on the World Happiness Report. Potentially Australia and New Zealand? They seem to be happy down there. What about places that aren't known for happiness but more so the opposite? I feel like it would be important to understand that perspective. Well, that's exactly what today's guest did. Joining me on the podcast is Dr. Ali Binazir who is an author, speaker, and clinical hypnotherapist. But if you asked Ali today, his primary title would be Happiness Engineer. During this episode, we are going to dive into happiness, particularly why it isn't something you are trying to find but instead engineer into your life. This is a great conversation to tune into if you've been looking for practical ways to feel more fulfilled. Dr. Ali shares many prescriptive methods that you could act upon today. Dr. Vivek Murthy served as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States from December 2014 to April 2017. As America's Doctor, he called the nation's attention to critical public health issues including the opioid epidemic, e-cigaretes and emotional health and wellbeing. Prior to serving in government, he conducted research on vaccine development and clinical trial participation and founded several organizations focused on HIV/AIDS education, rural health, physician advocacy and clinical trial optimization. He is the author of Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World. After being sworn in, Dr. Murthy embarked on a listening tour to see what was affecting communities across the United States. He found that, regardless of occupation, location or economic status, there was a crisis of loneliness that was not being formally addressed. Anywhere from 22-50% of people suffer from loneliness, far more than the number of people currently living with diabetes. ————————————————————————— To learn more about this episode, including podcast transcripts and show notes, visit *salt.org/talks* ( http://salt.org/talks ) Moderated by Anthony Scaramucci.

Podcast: Vox Conversations (LS 75 · TOP 0.05% what is this?)Episode: Best of: Vivek Murthy on America's loneliness epidemicPub date: 2020-11-23At the holidays, I wanted to share some of my favorite episodes of the show with you (we'll be back next week with brand new episodes). My conversation with Vivek Murthy tops that list, and it has particular force this Thanksgiving, when so many are alone on a day when connection means so much.As US surgeon general from 2014 to 2017, Murthy visited communities across the United States to talk about issues like addiction, obesity, and mental illness. But he found that what Americans wanted to talk to him about the most was loneliness. In a 2018 report by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 22 percent of all adults in the US — almost 60 million Americans — said they often or always felt lonely or socially isolated.Murthy went on to write Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World, and was recently named one of the co-chairs of Joe Biden's coronavirus task force. Those projects may sound different, but they connect: Coronavirus has made America's loneliness crisis far worse. Social distancing, while necessary from a public health standpoint, has caused a collapse in social contact among family, friends, and entire communities. And the people most vulnerable to the virus — the elderly, the disabled, the ill — are also unusually likely to suffer from loneliness. Murthy's explanation of how loneliness acts on the body is worth the time, all on its own — it'll change how you see the relationship between social experience and physical health. But the broader message here is deeper: You are not alone in your loneliness. None of us are. And the best thing we can do for our own feeling of isolation is often to help someone else out of the very pit we're in.Book recommendations:Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch AlbomConversations with God by Neale Donald WalschDear Madam President by Jennifer PalmieriCredits:Producer/Audio engineer - Jeff GeldResearcher - Roge KarmaPlease consider making a contribution to Vox to support this show: bit.ly/givepodcasts Your support will help us keep having ambitious conversations about big ideas.New to the show?
The COVID-19 Pandemic has led to the need for sheltering at home and practicing social distancing. We are physically separated from loved ones and our interactions with others have greatly reduced. These decreases in our social interactions are likely to lead to more loneliness. However, Americans were lonely before the pandemic. Shasta Nelson who wrote Friendships don't just happen identified 5 circles of connectedness: contact, common, confirmed, community, and committed friends. She distinguish these circles by the level of intimacy, frequency, and consistency of contact. Let's discuss loneliness and what we can do. Holt-Lunstad, J., Smith, T. Now more than ever, loneliness is a growing public health concern as communities continue to require social distancing and self-isolation to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Because humans are social creatures, at the center of our loneliness is our innate desire to connect, forge lasting bonds, help one another, and share life experiences. In his new book Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World, Dr. Murthy warns of the dangers of loneliness and the lasting impact it can have on our health. He will be joined by Dr. Lucy Kalanithi for a poignant conversation on his four key strategies to weather this epidemic during this difficult time and beyond. Dr. Murthy was appointed by President Barack Obama and served as the 19th surgeon general of the United States. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy says America faced a loneliness epidemic long before we started social distancing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Now, Murthy tells CBS News' Dr. Tara Narula that our current situation could either drive us further apart or serve as a "reset" to help us emerge more connected than before the global pandemic. Murthy discusses his new book, "Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World," and the importance of creating and maintaining bonds with the people in our lives. Murthy explains the physical and mental health dangers of loneliness and offers steps on how we can tackle the problem.
