“True belonging is the spiritual practice of believing in and belonging to yourself so deeply that you can share your most authentic self with the world and find sacredness in both being a part of something and standing alone in the wilderness. True belonging doesn't require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who you are.” ― Brené Brown, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone “Belonging is the opposite of loneliness. It's a feeling of home, of “I can exhale here and be fully myself with no judgment or insecurity.” Belonging is about shared values and responsibility, and the desire to participate in making your community better. It's about taking pride, showing up, and offering your unique gifts to others. You can't belong if you only take.” ― Radha Agrawal, Belong: Find Your People, Create Community, and Live a More Connected Life Resources: Books on Social Justice & Racial Healing The Racial Healing Handbook: Practical Activities to Help You Challenge Privilege, Confront Systemic Racism, and Engage in Collective Healing by Anneliese A. How quitting or cutting back on drinking will impact your social life is the number one concern of many people when getting Sober Curious, and my guest this week has been a pioneer in de-stigmatizing sober socializing. Radha Agwaral is the founder of Daybreaker, the early morning sober dance parties that have become a global phenomenon since her first event in New York in 2015—now catering to a tribe of 500,000 booze-free hedonists all around the world! Radha is also a lifelong community-builder, and her 2018 book Belong: Find Your People, Create Community & Live a More Connected Life, is a master-class in aligning your social connections with the highest vision for your life. In this episode we discuss: -How to create sober social meet-ups, parties, and events. -Radha's definition of "sober," meaning to life a life of clarity, passion, and purpose. -The exact exercise Radha used to change up her social life when she was getting Sober Curious at age 30. -Why partying sober is a natural way to get a D.O.S.E (!) of Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins. -How labels like "introvert" and "extrovert" can be limiting—as we are all "ambiverts" in the right social setting. -The true meaning of the words "community" and "belonging"—and why we need these more than ever! Up until a few years ago, before I started getting into personal development, I think my vocabulary for emotions was very limited. I thought in the beginning, maybe it was because English is not my first language. Maybe I just hadn't learned the words. But I've also not used the words. I actually just looked up the wheel of emotions where they break down the six core emotions into all the sub emotions and then it splits up from there. I looked at this chart and looked at the words and I've only used a handful of those words. So for me, the first step was learning the vocabulary. The journaling that I do has helped me reflect on those things. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is not consciously part of my mindfulness practice. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: The impact of social connections on health and longevity What having a deep connection means Social media interaction versus interaction in person The importance of the human touch The need for belonging Contribution and volunteering Key Takeaways: People always think that eating well and exercising is all you need to do to be healthy and have longevity, but actually, having strong social connections and meaningful relationships is really, really important. Building real, deep connections takes time, trust, and vulnerability. From the Human Longevity Project that was done, one of the major components of what leads to health and happiness is belonging to a community or a tribe and having meaningful human connections. There is an energetic exchange when you have a genuine interaction with somebody physically, in person, which you cannot get online. Connection is a felt sense that you get in person, not something that happens over a discussion or over thoughts. We should be having seven good, proper hugs a day. And it’s this lack of human touch that’s having a significant impact on the way that people feel and their mental health. Action Steps: Have meaningful relationships in your life. Give and receive at least seven good, proper hugs a day. Consider connecting with people through meetups. Do volunteer work. Antonia said: “In order to start being sociable… you have to be confident within yourself or at ease with yourself… As long as you’re not comfortable within yourself, you cannot make any social connection, true, meaningful connection.” Bryan said: “When I realised that everyone is uncomfortable, everyone is unsure, no one knows what they’re doing, that made me feel more comfortable… I understood that although I feel vulnerable and exposed in a social situation, so does everybody else.” Thanks for listening! It is my pleasure to introduce you to Radha Agrawal, who is the CEO, founder and Chief Community Architect of Daybreaker and has built a global community made up of nearly 500,000 like-minded people. In case you’re not familiar with Daybreaker – it is the early morning dance and wellness movement currently serving almost half a million people by holding events in 25 cities and over a dozen college campuses around the world. Her new book, Belong: Find Your People, Create Community, and Live a More Connected Life, answers two big questions: “How the heck do I find my people?" and "How do I create large and meaningful communities in the real world?" Radha spent 18 months synthesizing her key methods for community building, and now she’s peeling back the curtain on what she and her team did to build Daybreaker to give you a blueprint for how to create communities of your own. Today, Radha joins the podcast to talk about the importance of building communities, how to find your tribe when you realize you don’t belong, how she created and built momentum for Daybreaker, and how to build your personal or professional community - no matter what your goals are. What’s the secret to a happy life? Probably the best people to ask are people who say they are happy. So we begin this episode by revealing what happy people say is what makes them so happy. John Izzo, author of The 5 Secrets You Must Know Before You Die (https://amzn.to/2DdJDLA)Probably the one word you hear more than any other throughout your life is –NO! For some people no means no but for others it means something else entirely. BJ Gallagher, author of the book Yes Lives in the Land of No (https://amzn.to/2JXlPNh) offers some great advice for handling the word no when people tell you that you can’t have or do something. Since you will hear NO a lot for the rest of your life – this is worth listening to.Who doesn’t love going to a live concert? And yet when you really dissect the experience, it is probably not as good as we tell ourselves it is. I’ll reveal what one writer has to say about the concert-going experience that you may not have thought about before. (http://www.esquire.com/entertainment/music/a39525/live-music-overrated/)We humans need people. We are social creatures. We thrive with others. Yet many of us are alone and isolated with few, if any friends. Someone who is very concerned about this is Radha Agrawal, who is an entrepreneur, investor, inventor, speaker, and community builder. She founded Daybreaker a grassroots, early-morning dance phenomenon that is now in over 25 countries. She is also author of the book Belong: Find Your People Create Community and Live a More Connected Life https://amzn.to/2DfaczU. Radha explains not only why friends are important but how and where to go and find them. This Week's Sponsors-SimpliSafe Home Security. Having weak social ties is as harmful to our health as being an alcoholic and twice as harmful as obesity. Lack of support is one of the number one things my patients complain about. I’ve seen, firsthand, how social isolation can manifest into illness. Studies show that isolation can set off a cellular chain reaction that increases inflammation and suppresses the body’s immune response to disease.Without community, we cannot survive and we cannot thrive. Finding our tribe is the topic of this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy with guest Radha Agrawal. Radha is the Co-founder, CEO, and Chief Community Architect of Daybreaker, the early morning dance and wellness move-ment. Daybreaker currently holds events in 25 cities and more than a dozen college campuses around the world and has a community of almost half a million people. She is also the author of a new book called Belong: Find Your People, Create Community, and Live a More Connected Life. In this episode, Radha makes a case for community.I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Her new book, BELONG: Find Your People, Create Community, and Live a More Connected Life, answers the questions “How the heck do I find my people?” and “How do I create large and meaningful communities in the real world?” Radha lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her love, Eli, a baby on the way, and her twin sister, Miki—and lots of family and friends within a few blocks. You can most often find her tinkering with community and experience design projects, or on the dance floor at Daybreaker in New York City (if she's not dancing at sunrise in another part of the world.)
I had the pleasure of interviewing Radha Agrawal last year over the interwebs about the incredible community she's built with Daybreaker. Fast forward to now, she's now written Belong: Find Your People, Create Community, and Live a More Connected Life, and is on a book tour and happened to be in Los Angeles. I had her over for an afternoon on the couch, and we talked about the loneliness epidemic that is infecting everything from politics to romance. She made me cry multiple times, because it hit me like a ton of bricks just how lonely so many of us are. The work Radha is doing is so necessary, and I am continually blown away by how much of a badass she is.
Despite all our “friends”, “followers” and “users”, we are feeling more isolated than ever. Radha Agrawal calls this “community confusion,” Radha is the author of BELONG: Find Your People, Create Community, and Live a More Connected Life. She chats with Kevin about leadership, gentle self-awareness and community. She believes leaders need to cultivate their personal communities beyond business. When leaders find support, they create connections (both personal and within their teams), which studies show are our key to happiness, fulfillment, and success.

Radha Agrawal is the author of "Belong: Find Your People, Create Community, and Live a More Connected Life." She answers the question, “How the heck do I find my people so I can live a happier life?” Radha, an entrepreneur in her 20’s, was feeling very isolated and created Daybreaker, an early morning dance and wellness experience. She presents a powerful way to find and create meaningful communities.
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today’s conversation is with Radha Agrawal. Radha is…well, Radha is a pretty freaking amazing young woman. She’s probably best known for having founded Daybreaker, an early morning dance party that’s currently in 25 cities and has a half a million people in the community. Basically, about once a month Daybreaker takes place in each of these 25 cities. These consist of a one-hour yoga session, if you so choose, that’s followed by two hours of dance. All this takes place early enough in the morning that you can participate and then go to work. Think of it like a very scaled down, early morning version of Burning Man where 300 – 600 people get jiggy with it. Where there might be a theme, people might come in costume and basically they’re just completely letting loose before they head to their jobs. I suggest that while you’re listening to this episode, maybe you can just pop over to the Daybreaker website and see if the city nearest you is on their list. And if, not there’s probably a way you can contact them and request (or even start one yourself) for the city nearest you. Anyway, what grew out of Daybreaker is Radha’s new book, Belong: Find Your People, Create Community, and Live a More Connected Life. That kinda says it all. As you’ll hear in our conversation today, she said she was getting asked a few times a week how she was able to build her Daybreaker community, so she wrote the book in response to this question that kept coming up. But she didn’t just write a book, in my opinion, she created a piece of beautiful art. Seriously, it’s one of, if not THE most beautifully designed books I’ve every come across. And it was her handiwork as you’ll hear in this conversation. She’s the one that actually designed it. Even though we call ourselves connected (and by that I mean through technology), we have become a very disconnected culture and world. With Daybreaker, Radha has addressed this current epidemic of us being so disconnected from one another. What’s she done is not only built a community but, through Belong (her book) she’s created a road map for us all to build our own communities. As you hear on all the conversations here on the Be Bold Podcast, there’s much more to a person’s story than what they are currently working on. With Radha, you’ll hear in our conversation about her life story that takes her from Canada, to school in upstate NY to work in the finance world in the Big Apple to “travel” documentaries to vegetables to underwear and, finally, to community building. With that, enjoy this conversation with Radha Agrawal! ____ By the way...I’d love to hear your feedback! Send me a note at beth@beboldpodcast.com and let me know what you think.
