Do filler words matter?Tom Hanson found several key findings from research and industry data that shows filler words do matter!"Episodes with >4 filler words per minute saw 18–22% higher drop-off rate in the first 10 minutes compared to “clean” episodes" according to a Riverside listener study. How can you and I use this knowledge to convince potential clients that it's worth paying us to remove filler words? We discuss the impact of filler words on the success of podcasts in this episode of the Podcast Editors Mastermind Show.
How do you decide which um's and er's to keep and which to cut? You probably grew up hearing that too many "um"s and "like"s when you speak means you aren't educated or eloquent enough. The truth is, these filler words have an important job to do in our speech and conversation: they contribute to emotional impact and authenticity, and generally don't detract from authority at all. Despite the research supporting this, the past decade or so has seen a push by some podcasters and platforms to eradicate filler words from published episodes. Today, there are even one-click AI-driven options that claim to cleanly pull selected "er"s and "uh"s from your recordings. Spoiler alert: they aren't very good at it. All this serves to reinforce the narrative that filler words are "bad," but Mary pushes back on that erroneous assumption. In this episode, she discusses the disconnect between speaker and listener that comes from over-editing. Striking a balance between a stilted monologue that distracts your audience and authentic human connection isn't always easy, but it's always worth the effort. Fight for the right to keep your conversations natural: Why identifying your ideal listener is key to filler word frequency; The reason letting AI edit out your filler words is bound to fail (aka: the context cue imperative); How eavesdropping at your local coffee shop can improve your editing; What the filler word controversy can reveal to you about your own speech patterns. Send us Fan MailExecutive presence is not only about how you carry yourself or how you sound. It lives in the words you choose. Consider this: "Sorry, I just wanted to quickly jump in here. This might be a silly question, and I could be totally wrong, but I was kind of wondering if maybe we should look at the numbers again before we decide? Does that make sense?" In a few seconds, that leader undermined herself nine times. Her idea was strong. Her language was apologizing for it. If you have ever walked out of a meeting wondering why the room did not respond to a recommendation you knew was right, this episode hands you the exact words working against you, and the swaps that turn your competence back into authority. In this episode of Communicate to Lead, Kele Belton goes deep on the verbal pillar of executive presence: the actual words coming out of your mouth. She walks through four categories of language that quietly drain authority from strong ideas, the apologies, the minimizers, the hedges, and the filler words, and gives you the specific swaps that change how the room hears you. Through the story of Diane, a composite client twice passed over for a director role until she changed her language, Kele shows what shifts in your executive presence when your competence is no longer hidden by the words around it.This is Part 3 of the four-part Executive Presence Series. It follows Episode 168 on the visual pillar (the Three Anchors of Embodied Presence) and Episode 170 on the vocal pillar (pitch, pace, volume, and pauses). Each part builds your executive presence one layer at a time, leading to Episode 174, where all three pillars come together in a real high-stakes moment. What You Will Learn:Why women learn these speech patterns early, so you can stop blaming yourself for habits that were once rewarded. The gratitude reframe that lets you stay warm without lowering your standing in the room. Why the word "just" is a verbal apology for the size of your own thought, and the one-second fix that makes any sentence stronger. How a hedge at the front of a sentence quietly instructs the room to dismiss what you are about to say, before you have even said it.The phrase Kele gives every client to replace the question "Does that make sense?", which keeps your authority intact and still invites a real conversation. Why filler words are not the villain, except in the moments that matter most, and how the pause does the same job with the opposite effect.Your Action Step:Pick one word and hunt it for one week:Choose either "just" or" sorry", whichever shows up more in your speech. When you catch it before it comes out, delete it. When you catch it after it comes out, notice it without self-criticism, and keep going.Bonus: Write your three favorite swaps on a sticky note. "Sorry" becomes "thank you". "Just" gets deleted. "Does that make sense?" becomes "What questions do you have?"Mentioned in This Episode:Continue building your executive presence with Episode 170: Vocal Presence for Women Leaders (Part 2 of 4), on pitch, pace, volume, and pauses.Start the series from the beginning with Episode 168: How to Build Executive Presence with 3 Anchors (Part 1 of 4), on the visual pillar.Book a Leadership Strategy Call (30 minutes, complimentary): https://calendly.com/kele-thetailoredapproach/leadership-strategy-callAbout Your Host:Kele Belton is a communication and leadership facilitator, coach, and consultant who helps high-performing women in middle management build the communication and leadership strategies that get them recognized, sponsored, and promoted.Connect with Kele:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kele-ruth-belton/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetailoredapproach/Website: https://thetailoredapproach.com

Three Tips for HACKING UNCERTAINTY in Turbulent Times: Find the right people who understand the "controllables." Find people who are trailblazers Find people who help others: Chris Krimitsos is someone who kicks butt even in Turbulent Times: He has an amazing capacity for change which is one of three great truths that Price Pritchett shares in his book Quantum Leap Strategies. Chris exudes the true Renaissance man in that he leads others to successful paths, leadership and other life skills simply by extending a helping hand. He is well known for his amazing explosion into the Podcasting world creating PODFEST (TM) EXPO the annual Orlando, FL, conference. Furthermore, he has now taken it internationally to Asia in 2024 and beyond. https://podfestexpo.com I have been a speaker and a volunteer for Podfest beginning virtually in 2020 continuing to 2025. Conferences can be overwhelming. Yet I feel Chris has surrounded himself with talented people who carry his visions for an awe-inspiring event for creators, exhibitors and attendees. This year, Chris asked the PODFEST EXPO attendees to design the conference's T-shirts. ( I told him that I wanted to create one with stick figures.) He responded: " DO IT" And that's the kind of person he is.. ( I didnt do it..but maybe next year.) Chris exemplifies Price Pritchett's other concept of YOU2 (You squared) in that he chooses to take the road less travelled. He is not afraid of failure, or missteps when taking the path of uncertainty. His belief in the concept that one's desires are actually easier to achieve with different thinking rather than trying harder and getting the same old results. The ABILITY TO HACK UNCERTAINTY leads to that road where dreams become reality. This choice of “ it can be easy” is due to his ability to be relentless in pursuit of a dream. Chris is someone who is always open to and takes Quantum Leaps. Price Pritchett teaches us that a quantum leap is a move that is ours for the taking. Right now. It's a giant step you can make merely by deciding to do it, which opens you up to resources. Taking PODFEST to ASIA was absolutely a QUANTUM LEAP. REMEMBER… we all need a sense of direction, to be focused on our end result. Chris Krimitsos is very much blazing that trail. His success is being in the present. Oh and there is his PODTOUR around the United States and Canada.. to be continued next podcast... AT OUR AGE: disrupting the pharmaceutical “Shockingly, in the USA, it's not unusual for disadvantaged populations to suffer from rampant outbreaks of hookworm. Normally the drug prescribed for hookworm, Albendazole, can cost as much as $500 per course, making the drug out of reach for many in need. So we started off by donating more than 10,000 tablets of Albendazole to cure parasitic infections in the most affected areas of the southern US. Our goal is to dramatically reduce the cost of drugs like Albendazole, but we also think that it is just as important to introduce transparency to the pricing of drugs so patients know they are getting a fair price. Our cost for Albendazole is $26.08 per course. We mark that price up by 15% so we can continue to run the company and invest in disrupting the pricing of as many drugs as we possibly can. That makes the base price of the drug $30. We all have situations where we find ourselves having sweaty palms, butterfly stomachs and anxiety. The most common situation is Public Speaking. I have been making presentations for over thirty years. Largely in the wine industry and as the owner of Le Petit Chateau inn, which required a smooth delivery. Furthermore I was a Toastmaster for thirty years in Texas, California, New York, Florida Here are some quick tips to calm your nerves: 1) It is natural to be anxious and afraid in new situations. Just don't stay there! 2) People are in awe of others and you whenever you exhibit courage in uncomfortable situations. This is especially true with public speaking. 3) Get rid of those FILLER words: AH, AND, SO , LIKE These utterances detract from your message making people less attentive. It's natural to be frightened by me. Don't stay frightened however Find a neighbor or nearby friend to relieve the fear Play cards or a game to take your mind off of my powerful rain and wind Don't weather my storm by yourself. Owned by Suzan Myrtle, she is one of the most creative, responsive and honest people and companies that I have partnered with in my former business, Le PETIT CHATEAU INN. That business became a destination travel lodging because of the consistent professionalism of StudioDog. The beautiful website and consistent expertise was constantly applauded by guests. Selling your Stuff and the Wicked Capital Gains Tax. Remember when George Carlin did a skit on STUFF? His one line about how we all have houses for our STUFF. Then… we need to buy a bigger house to move all our stuff to because we out grew the first house.. That transaction of selling the first house will trigger a capital gain tax. And it can be wicked. At Our Age… we are downsizing and selling our stuff: Our primary residence, vacation rentals, rental properties. Possibly renting now or moving into a condo with no maintenance. I am experiencing the shock, actually, of realizing a huge Capital Gain Tax from owning rental properties and an inn for twenty two years in new York. I am sharing the journey with folks as I believe a lot of folks do not prepare for this large taxable event. My personal advice is to know this : you can only deduct the last three years of improvements before the sale. Therefore keep really good records of any improvements and other deductions that will lessen the Capital Gains Tax. I am now working with a TAX EXPERT ( Sheree White) because the accountants did not know how to work with Capital Gains Tax. She is also an IRS enrolled agent which makes her qualified to manage the issues. Moreover.. SHE TALKS TO THE IRS so you don't have to be on the phone with them for hours. Summary In this episode, Andy welcomes sociolinguist Valerie Fridland to discuss her new book Like, Literally, Dude: Arguing for the Good in Bad English. They explore the significance of language use in leadership, including the use of filler words, intensifiers, and vocal fry. She challenges the notion that filler words should be eliminated, highlighting their cognitive and communicative benefits. Overall, the conversation provides insights into the complexities of language and its role in effective communication. It's a fun discussion about language that will have you laughing, for sure, but also leaving the conversation with insights to help you lead more effectively at work (and at home). Sound Bites "Probably the best answer is I know enough about other languages to order a beer in those languages and that's pretty much probably all you need." "But it's also on the other side that when we're letting ourselves get distracted by those speech features (filler words), and then we're dismissing what they have to say because of something we don't like, we're also doing something wrong." "I said I study vowel movements. He heard bowel movements and thought I was a gastroenterologist." "If parents are worried about the way their kids talk, just show really good interest in trying to copy it and they'll never say it in front of you again." Hello to you listening in Yamaguchi City, Japan!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga.I've produced over 1,000 daily podcast episodes on the global airwaves. Each episode is typically between 60 and 180 seconds. In mere minutes I share a story, a message, and a call to action. Why does brevity matter? Attention spans are dangerously short. More importantly communicating information in a clear, concise and cogent manner gets you seen, heard, understood and listened to. At the same time you develop your communication confidence.3 Tips to Improve Your Communication Confidence:1. Do you stumble over your words in a meeting or presentation? Before you speak think about the key points you want to make. Jot down a roadmap with bullet points. Once you start speaking you'll be anchored and directed. Make your points and end with a strong conclusion.2. Do you over-explain because you're unsure whether your audience is with you? If you feel you're not getting your point across take the pulse of the room every now and again by asking a short question: Are you with me? What are you hearing? Does this make sense? Gauge the reaction before you continue speaking. You may need to backtrack or take a question.3. Do you feel like you use too many filler words? The meaningless ums, uhs, likes, and ya knows that suck the oxygen out of the room. Filler words can detract from our assertiveness. But at times we can use the word ‘like' to create connection with our audience. People communicate in metaphors: this is like that is. Know your words. Choose your words. When in doubt, take a breath. Bonus tip: Every day for 3 minutes practice speaking out loud. Record and listen to yourself. Pay attention to what sounds good and what could sound better. Once you raise awareness about what you do well and what to do better you will do it.CTA: I'm ready to help you grow into a confident communicator who can clarify ideas and amplify messages.
