Next up in our tour of Vittore Carpaccio is “Saint Augustine in His Study.” Carpaccio was a specialist in creating series of huge paintings designed to hang in sequence to tell the story of a saint or other Biblical story and “St. Augustine” is one of these. We'll find out how an unexpected visitor told the saint to get over himself, how Carpaccio created an immersive media experience in a Venetian meetinghouse, and how a dog beat out a weasel for a role in this scene. Edmund Schiavoni's first-rate, "page-turning" novel 'Pathway To Glory' unfolds when the protagonist, Paul Stevens, attempts to take over the giant corporation that he is the chief financial executive of by boldly initiating a proxy contest against its incumbent management. This plot teems with high adventure, political intrigue, and the avariciousness that the machinations of Wall Street and lust for power consume him prior to committing this act...and the havoc he's encumbered with after its execution. The idea for this story evolved from two phrases: one, "Sorrow is the seed of holiness," formulated by a now-deceased cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and the other, "It is in defeat that we become Christian," coined by Hemingway in his novel, A Farewell to Arms. Thus, this story, with its pathos, comedic moments, as well as high adventure, gives the reader a panoramic view of the American scene and the Machiavellian schemes that its work ethic spawn and is much more than just another narrative about big business or the good and evil that vie within all of us because, besides that, it has a compelling message for everyone living in today's anxious world. Mike Massey and Teddy Schiavano of Locally are back on another Channel Mastery episode just in time to kick off the brand-new decade! Locally is a company that connects the brands and products found in thousands of stores with nearby, interested shoppers. I like to think of it as a triangulation of sorts between specialty retailer, brand and target consumer. Mike and Teddy, and the Locally team, are always evolving the how around their mission, because the consumer continues to evolve. Locally makes it easier to compete for the attention of today’s shopper, and therefore, it levels the playing field for specialty businesses competing for the attention of today’s connected, omni-channel consumer. In this show, Teddy, Mike and I dissect the big impact of Nike’s formal separation from Amazon, and what that means to the logistics game (and Amazon’s continuing quest to train our consumers). We also talk through brand culture, mission and vision and the importance of that type of storytelling to position specialty to win with target consumers. If you’re curious to know what the key trends and insights are that are anchoring how consumers will discover, engage and buy from you in 2020, this is one episode you do not want to miss. In fact, you’ll want to share it with your colleagues and friends. Let us know what you think about the show, we love to hear from you. You can join the conversation on LinkedIn or Instagram. Mike Massey, Founder and President at Locally is a third generation retailer and owner of Massey's Outfitters. The idea of Locally grew out of a need to market in-stock products to nearby online shoppers and accept transactions from them. At Locally, Mike is the head of strategy, operations and partnerships. Teddy Schiavoni is VP of Business Development at Locally. His work in the snow sports industry includes retailer, sales rep, product development and marketing. His deep connections around the globe allow him to present Locally as a solution to enhancing brand/retailer relationships.
Christina Schiavoni, food sovereignty scholar and activist speaks to Indigo Radio about What is Food Sovereignty and examples of movements around the world including Venezuela.
In today’s episode, I speak with my wonderful, repeat guest, Teddy Schiavoni, about the 2019 SIA/Outdoor Retailer Snow Show, the latest news from Locally.com, and a bucket list of mission critical topics from building emotional connections with our customers to providing a mobile-first shopping journey. Teddy Schiavoni is a multi-hyphenate in the snowsports world. He’s a co-owner of Summit Ski and Snowboard Shop, and the president and founder of Slope Style Life, a consulting firm. He is currently chairman of the Retail Advisory Board for the Snowsports Industries of America (SIA); chairman-elect for the National Ski and Snowboard Retailers Association (NSSRA); on the product council for SMC; and contributes to product development and marketing councils across the industry. He is also VP of business development for Locally.com.
Hosts Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola are joined by Christina Schiavoni, who is a food sovereignty activist and doctoral researcher at the International Institute of Social Studies in The Hague. She has engaged in solidarity work in Venezuela and focuses on food issues, and she lived in a working class community in Caracas from early 2016 to 2018. Schiavoni describes how she became involved in activism around food sovereignty in Venezuela. She addresses the issues of food shortages and who owns most of the major food companies. She also grapples with the lack of diversification in Venezuela's economy. Later in the interview, Schiavoni talks about food aid that is handed out to poor and working class Venezuelans by the government. She outlines the impact of sanctions and provides an explanation for why the government may not want to allow the humanitarian aid from President Donald Trump's administration to enter Venezuela.

EPISODE PREVIEW: In this week’s show, I interview our “wintersports correspondent,” Teddy Schiavoni. Full disclosure: He had no idea he had an official title at Channel Mastery! But he’s earned it (and so much more) with his amazing insight and insider knowledge of snowsports, retail and the evolution of both industries. This episode is all about what’s happening NOW. We talk the HUGE news of the rising optimism in retail, REI joining Locally.com, the money and movement behind ski industry development in China, and the SIA evolution. If you come away with one message from Teddy, it’s this: participate! There are a zillion tools out there right now ALL aimed to helping us do better. [Hey! Channel Mastery is one of them, so you’re definitely earning a point for showing up!] Enjoy… GUEST PROFILE: Teddy Schiavoni is a multi-hyphenate in the snowsports world, but his center is always grounded in specialty retail. He owns the award-winning Summit Ski and Snowboard Shop, a two-store chain in Massachusetts, together with his wife. He is the president and founder of Slope, Style, Life, a snowsports consulting firm. He is an advocate, an innovator, and a force of nature in snowsports industry, who has actively served on boards and leadership positions. Currently, he is chairman of the Retail Advisory Board for the Snowsports Industries of America (SIA); chairman-elect for the National Ski and Snowboard Retailers Association (NSSRA); on the product council for SMC; and contributes to product development and marketing councils across the industry. He is also a partner (with Mike Massey) in Locally.com.
Public affairs editor Darrel Rowland and reporter Marty Schladen talk with gubernatorial candidate Joe Schiavoni on what makes him a great candidate to potentially become Ohio’s governor. We further discuss gun safety, what could be done to change gun laws, and his proposed ban on assault style weapons. Next we talk about where Schiavoni would get funding for his potential revitalization projects, discuss the opioid crisis, and the medical, recreational use of marijuana.
We open the show up in lovely Modena, Italy, where we visit with sisters, Sara and Chiara Fantoni. They own Bar Schiavoni, the legendary cafe renowned for its panino al cotechino – small sandwiches. Don't have fancy wine glasses? Don't worry says our buddy, wine writer, Jameson Fink, who joins us for another turn of “Snacky Tunes 5’s” in which he discusses all things glassware. Brooklyn punk rock five-piece, Heaven's Gate, is currently working on their third full length album, and they took a break from recording to join us in-studio for a live performance. As part of an ongoing series of recordings of unusual sounds of the Venice lagoon, these tracks were made on 29th april 2008 at 2100 in a night-depot of boats of the public transport service at Riva dei Schiavoni, not far from San Marco square. Headphones are recommended. Recorded 24/96, with binaural stereo mic. "Sapientum super acquis" is the title attribuited to the "Magistrato alle acque" of the Serenissima Venetian Republic, an organ istituited on 1501 by the "Council of ten", that had the job of keeping safe the delicate natural/artificial balance of the lagoon, and looking after the "health" of the water. Today the water is mostly polluted because of Porto Marghera, one of the biggest industrial areas in the whole Europe.
