On today's show: Kanye West has his social media accounts locked and draws the ire of Gigi Hadid, why Prince Harry's memoir might never be released, Carrie Bickmore departs The Project, the oh-so juicy claims that this year's Miss USA pageant was “rigged”, and then, it feels like every corner of the internet is declaring “thin is in”. Happy Saturday, book club fam! This month we read the incredible memoir from writer Amy Bloom, called In Love. In January 2020, Amy travelled to Switzerland with her husband Brian where he was helped by Dignitas to end his life after a diagnosis of Alzheimer's. The book details their love story, Brian's slow decline ,and Amy's doggedness in ensuring her husband died with dignity. It's a book about love, agency, and grief and encourages the reader to think a lot about what it means to live, and what it means to die. It was a heavy one, but a beautiful one. Hellooooo, book clubbers!!!!This month, we read the non-fiction book from bestselling Aussie author Trent Dalton called Love Stories. For about two months, Trent sat on a busy Brisbane street corner, asking more than 150 strangers for their best love stories. What sparked this idea? Why hello there, book clubbers! This month, we read ‘You and Me on Vacation' by Emily Henry, and boy oh boy did it deliver on its promise to be a sugary, frothy read. Protagonists Alex and Poppy have nothing in common. She's a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. And somehow, ever since a fateful car-share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. For most of the year they live far apart—she's in New York City, and he's in their small hometown—but every summer, for a decade, they go on holiday together. It's a story of girl meets boy, girl befriends boy, girl falls in love with boy, girl loses boy, and then, finally, girl gets boy back.Today on the show, Mich, Zara, and Annabelle discuss the book's structure, believability, ending, and eeeverything in between.Got some thoughts on our October pick, ‘The Henna Artist' by Alka Joshi? Gooooood morning, wonderful listeners!Today on the show, we bring you the brave Yumiko Kadota. Yumiko, as you’d read in her new memoir Emotional Female, has been an over-achiever her entire life, studying medicine at university and deciding to enter the perilous surgical stream when specialising as a doctor. Only, it was when Yumiko found herself trying to become a surgeon that she encountered the true, brutal nature of Australia’s hospital culture. Yumiko was subjected to such a ridiculous work schedule, colleagues who were unflinching in their coldness, and institutionalised sexism and racism that she was pushed to a mental breakdown in her late twenties, prompting her to take extended leave from her career and spend time as an inpatient in a psychiatric facility. In this chat, we talk about the highs and the lows of being a female doctor in Australia, as well as what can be done to ensure the next generation of female surgeons aren’t pushed to a place they can’t come back from. For more from Yumiko, follow her on Instagram at @mindbodymiko. And to grab a copy of her book, Emotional Female, head here.Thank you so much to today’s sponsor, Quay Australia. Ashley Abercrombie fought to overcome addiction, rape, abortion, perfectionism and dysfunctional relationships to become an honest, whole and free woman (most days). She wore a mask more than half her life, and considers herself too old, and too annoyed to ever put that thing on again. Ashley is a speaker and a writer, featured in many magazines and digital outlets, including Darling, Relevant and Grit and Virtue. Her YouVersion Bible study, Finding God in the Hard Places, has been completed by over 200,000 people. Her first book will be released in the fall of 2019, with Baker Books. Alongside fellow author and speaker, Tiffany Bluhm, Ashley is the co-host for the hilarious and helpful podcast Why Tho. She has an unrelenting passion for justice, particularly anti-human trafficking and mass incarceration initiatives, and served the city of Los Angeles for seven years, winning commendations from the LAPD and Los Angeles Mayor’s office, before transitioning to Manhattan to pastor at Liberty Church, Downtown, alongside her husband, Cody. Ashley is an executive board bember of Treasures, a non-profit that reaches and supports women in the sex industry and victims of sexual exploitation, while training leaders globally. The Abercrombies are nearly brain dead from sleep deprivation, but love their life, raising two incredible sons, Levi (5) and Lucas (2), in their beautiful neighborhood in Harlem, New York. I recently had a week where everything just felt so off and so out of my control. Can you relate? We’ve all been there. It’s hard. And... it’s ok to not be ok. Sometimes we try to just blow past our emotions or frustrations. We feel like we don’t have time for them. I mean, who has extra time to sit around feeling dumpy?? But it’s also necessary to process why we are not ok. Some questions to ask: What got me here? Why is it so uncomfortable? Did I make a poor choice? Am I absorbing and owning someone else’s junk? How can I make things better - not just put a bandaid on it - but really make it better? How can I create some space to figure out positive and powerful next steps? If you find yourself putting up a front on the regular, this episode is for you. Give yourself permission to stop faking fine and be less than awesome every now and then. She also helps tens of thousands of families become debt-free by sharing her real life getting out of debt story and challenge #FindTheMoneyProject. I have been following Danny on social media for a while now. When I learned she gave up a baby for adoption as a teen mom, I asked her to come on the show to be interviewed as a Shameless Mom. Danny’s story is filled with trauma and heartache, but it ends in triumph and so much love and joy that she could never have anticipated as a young desperate and clinically depressed young woman. In this interview, we dive deep into Danny’s childhood, which was deeply impacted by her family’s religion, sexual abuse at the hands of her cousin, learning her biological father was a sperm donor, a serious eating disorder, depression with ongoing suicidal ideation, and a pregnancy at age 15 that ultimately saved her life. Listen in to hear Danny share: How having a baby at 16 saved her from her eating disorder, depression and suicidal thoughts How giving up her baby actually gave her life purpose again How her grown daughter coached her on meeting her sperm donor bio dad last year How opening all the doors in her biological family relationships has improved all her relationships with her parents Why she is a Shameless Mom even though she didn’t raise her daughter PLEASE NOTE: this episode has been divided into Part 1 and Part 2. Jen Lumanlan is the host of the Your Parenting Mojo podcast, which distills scientific research on child development into a format that parents can actually use. She has done a TON of research on both child development and education, and also recently launched a course called Your Homeschooling Mojo, which helps parents to decide whether homeschooling is right for their family. So all that said, a lot of Jen’s friends think it’s pretty ironic that she never thought she would be a parent because she didn’t have an inkling of a motherly instinct in her body. Jen earned a bachelor’s degrees from U.C. Berkeley and a Master’s of Environmental Management from Yale and spent several years in consulting before realizing that she was way more passionate about being a parent than she ever thought she could be, so she went back to school and got a Master’s in Psychology focused on Child Development and is now working on another in Education. She’s still doing a less-rigorous day job while she ramps up the business that she hopes will enable her daughter’s homeschooling. We’ll talk about what she’s learned from the research she’s read that has helped her to be a better parent but also stop worrying so much about being a better parent and just enjoy life! We’ll also dig into some of the surprising things she learned about the education system while she was doing her master’s thesis research on what motivates children to learn in the absence of a curriculum. Listen in to hear Jen share: How and why she uses research to lead her parenting The truth about only children and social skills and intelligence How she knew homeschooling would be the best decision for her daughter – even though she’s not school age yet Why our current education system is not meeting the needs of our kids The myths (and truths) of homeschooling and homeschooling stereotypes Why homeschooling is becoming more popular, especially among black families Links Mentioned: Podcast: The Your Parenting Mojo podcast - research-based ideas to help kids thrive (and make parenting a bit easier!)
