In this episode, Wellington and Savon review Beyoncé’s Lemonade, the vividness and pain that was highlighted as one of her most complete projects, Jay-Z’s 4:44 as a late-career gem and his permanent legacy as one of his most influential artists, ever for hip-hop. And to close out the first half, we review Future’s latest High Off Life album and if his sound has progressed enough. In the second half, they review The Departed, the 2006 crime thriller directed by Martin Scorsese and headlined by Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson. What’s discussed is if this Oscar win for Scorsese was more of a lifetime achievement award, compared to some of his earlier classics, Mark Wahlberg’s memorable supporting role and the elite elements of DiCaprio and Matt Damon headlining a film.

Whether or not you know the full, hard history of Lee Fields, I think 50 years into his music career, 10 years since he found the Expressions, and nearly 7 decades of a life that began in Civil Rights-era North Carolina make 2019 a prime time to celebrate "the coolest motherf***er to sing words into a microphone" (Vice). Across dozens of record labels, countless periods of defeat, and stretches of near-retirement, Lee jumpstarted the legacy of Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones, laid the groove for songs by Travis Scott and J Cole, and - with April 5th album It Rains Love (Big Crown) - will affirm his position as the new, benevolent standard of soul. On Episode 45 of HOWA, I feel very lucky to had a (rather scratchy sounding) phone chat with both Lee and producer Leon Michels (Lana Del Rey, Adele, Beyoncé & Jay Z) on how they've spent the past 20 years or so together, crossing analog and digital mediums, multiple generations of tape saturation, and six consecutive hours of vocal takes at a time to get this music to our ears. 20 years?!?!? Here's a link to the album! https://bigcrownrecords.com/store/it-rains-love/ ______________________________________ In this show I take a hint from the Episode number hitting 45 and start cutting into some wax. New life to old 45s in the nitty. Just rerun that runout groove! Well, hello! Alice and Deanna welcome themselves back from their accidental sabbatical, declaring this episode to be the beginning of Season 3. And that's not all! They also discuss '90s fashion, how much the world is going to hell, what's the worst thing to say to someone in a dark place, why new music is our salvation right now (but note to Beyoncé and Jay-Z, uh, the country is in flames), and what happens when your cardiologist enters the office on his Segway. Plus: delightful things! Show notes and more: leagueofawkwardunicorns.com PS -- You may notice some audio distortion this episode. Our incredibly overpaid sound engineer was asleep on the job, and couldn't totally make it perfect later, and not that she's a perfectionist, but SHE BEGS YOUR FORGIVENESS.
This week Beyoncé & Jay-Z dropped an album which meant a “new” singles mix had to be done. Many of the below songs you will not here on the radio. It's a mix of Pop, R&B and Hip Hop. Here’s the playlist in order: 1. Ape S**t - the Carter’s 2. Powerglide - Rae Sremmurd 3. Banana Clip - Miguel 4. Lady, Lady - Masego 5. Like This Guy - Bulow 6. Entertainer - Zayn 7. Win - Jay Rock ft. Kendrick Lamar 8. Rocket - En Vogue 9.Black - The Dream (this song is a social statement song which I was impressed that The Dream went deeper than superficial lyrics to touch on the issues plaguing America today) 10. Boss - The Carter's Enjoy, Dj Shizz
Going APES**T over Beyoncé & Jay-Z, AND the fact that Jada Pinkett Smith is here IRL!

Next, 10 Q's for chef Alan Geaam about his Cinderella story - youth in war torn Liberia & Lebanon (10:43), life as a homeless dishwasher (16:08), the buildup to receiving a Michelin star (19:46), & his 3 restaurants in Paris (24:20, 29:10). To close, comic Taylor Ortega talks eating in secret (31:18)
As founder and CEO of 22 Days Nutrition and author of the New York Times best-selling book The 22-Day Revolution, Marco Borges is one of the most sought-after experts in the field of plant-based nutrition and functional foods. Growing up in Miami in the late '70s—and attending public school during the heyday of cocaine in the city—he credits his strong sense of self and determined personality for his lack of interest in drugs and alcohol. He originally wanted to be a doctor, but the more he learned about health care, the more he realized that it's a much too reactive system. Eventually, Borges became interested in fitness and cycling and learned what to eat, what not to eat, and how foods made him feel. He says he owes his success to being eternally curious about everything and refusing to compromise. In this episode we discuss starting his own business and why it's not really work when you're doing something you love. He talks about creating 22 Days Nutrition abd how one Instagram post by Beyoncé caused everyone to go crazy overnight about the 22-Day Challenge. Borges has dedicated his life to teaching people how to transform their lives through movement and nutrition—including people like Jay-Z and Beyoncé. His incredible energy and wisdom make him one of my favorite people in the world, so don't miss this one! This week's guest on Special Sauce, Alex Guarnaschelli, is constantly juggling the roles of TV chef (she's a regular judge on Chopped), working chef (at the two Butter locations in Manhattan), and mom (to one beautiful daughter). When you're faced with all those demands, it probably doesn't hurt to be whip-smart and funny as hell, which Alex most definitely is. What more could a podcast host ask for?
After the previous show on the budding "friendships" between Kanye West, Kirk Franklin and Lecrae, we did some further research. The common thread that continued to surface is the executive producer: S1 (Symbolic One). S1, a professing Christian, is under contact on Kanye West's music label, does music for Eminem, Beyonce, Jay-Z and many others and yet, he also holds fast to his profession and feels equally comfortable doing music for Christian artists like Lecrae. "The music is just my contribution; what they do with it is on them," says S1 in defense of his work with secular artists. So, is he justified in collaborating with whomever he wishes? Biblically, is it S1 absolved from what they do with his music? Tune in to today's show for a biblical analysis.
