LEADERS BEWARE THE BEAUTIFUL LIE “The beautiful lie isn't always the same lie. However, beautiful lies have this in common: they play hard on the vanity and ego of the recipient of the deceit. If you are being offered a grand gesture, an opportunity which sounds too good to be true, a offer you can't refuse, do your homework first. Also take time to do an internal gut check for just how much of the offerings, services or products serve only the purpose of making you feel good about yourself but in the end do not impact the bottom line. One of the most beautiful voices performing today, is that of Marlon Williams. The New Zealand singer has been a rising star over the past few years, not only with his music but increasingly on screen with roles in A Star is Born, The Beautiful Lie, and True History of the Kelly Gang. It's been around four years since his last solo record, but he's just returned with My Boy. And it's quite the flip from his last, full of jaunty rhythms, 80's synths, and a lighter quality all round. On the day he released it, Marlon joined me to Take 5. From Maori children's songs to Duran Duran, this is a beautiful and grounded conversation about renewal and finding you way back to your foundations. On todays episode of the Frame & Reference Podcast, Kenny talks with cinematographer John Brawley, ACS about LAKEWOOD staring Naomi Watts. In this episode, John goes into his journey to becoming a DP as well as shooting LAKEWOOD with the BlackMagic 12k. John built a reputation as one of Australia's most talented, innovative and collaborative Directors of Photography before relocating to the US where he's continued to build on that reputation, working nonstop on projects including Apple's critically acclaimed hit series THE MORNING SHOW starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell; the highly praised Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult led period dramedy THE GREAT for Hulu/MRC, and NBC's upcoming true-crime limited series THE THING ABOUT PAM starring Renée Zellweger. In 2017, John arrived in the US to shoot the USA drama series QUEEN OF THE SOUTH starring Alice Braga. Fox's first year medical drama THE RESIDENT immediately followed – he also shot Season 2 and made his directorial debut on the series. Other recent credits include the Fox pilot GONE BABY GONE for director Phillip Noyce; the Syfy/UCP series HUNTERS for producer Gale Anne Hurd and Matchbox Pictures; and THE BEAUTIFUL LIE, a contemporary retelling of ANNA KARENINA, starring Sarah Snook, for ABC Television (now on Hulu), which received considerable critical and audience acclaim and earned him an AACTA nomination for Best Cinematography in Television. John began his career shooting many of Australia's most beloved series including PUBERTY BLUES, where he used a ground breaking mix of cutting edge technology and period lenses to achieve the 70's era look; the first six seasons of the award winning dramedy OFFSPRING; the well-known UNDERBELLY series; political drama PARTY TRICKS; and THE WARRIORS for acclaimed Australian producer Robert Connolly, amongst many others. Other feature credits include 100 BLOODY ACRES starring Angus Sampson and Damon Herriman, cult favorite LAKE MUNGO and THE PERFECT HOST, starring David Hyde Pierce, which premiered at Sundance prior to its US release. John graduated with an MA from the prestigious Australian Film Television and Radio School and received his ACS (Australian Cinematographers Society) Accreditation earlier this year. She's also starred in the award-winning TV series ‘Laid', Logie Award winning drama ‘Offspring' and in all five seasons of Working Dog's show ‘Utopia', for which she won another AACTA Award for Best Performance in a Television Comedy in 2015. Internationally, she's been a guest on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Chelsea Lately and The Rob Brydon Show. In 2016 she also co-created, co-wrote and starred in the smash hit comedy Rosehaven with Luke McGregor, for which she won the 2017 award for Best Performance in a Television Comedy at the AACTAs, has been nominated twice for Most Popular Actress at the Logies, as well as two nominations for her writing at the AWGIEs (Australian Writers Guild). Heftig! Viel Spass! http://www.cosmopolytix.com

"It's a heroic person to believe a lie for 20, 30, 40 years and face it, and then have to deal with the emotions that come from that shift in your belief system. The vaccine...what a beautiful lie to believe in. That's easy right? If we could believe in that lie then all you have to do is get your two shots, then you don't have to wear a mask, and you could get back to normal, and you could hug your family..."

Episode 25 of The Blank Canvas Podcast with Mark Fennessy. Mark is an entrepreneur, television and film producer. I’ve worked with Mark on a few occasions and he’s become somewhat of a mentor and actually a mate. Had I known the full extent of his achievements, I actually would have been a little intimidated to do this interview, he’s a giant in the world of media, broadcasting and production. Mark started out in 1981 as an Assistant Cameraman in the news department of network 7 in Melbourne, rose quickly through the ranks to become a highly respected producer with Seven and Nine, with dozens of major credits including 4 Olympic Games broadcasts. At 26 Mark Headed up MTV Australia, eventually joining the team at MTV International when it was a global phenomenon. Mark returned to Australia to create Crackerjack with his brother Carl. As a little independent production company, they made a big name for themselves as producers of comedy and trail blazed the new world of unscripted television. Among the slate were Backberner, Comedy Inc, Chaser Non Stop News Network, Jamie’s Kitchen Australia, and the legendary Enough Rope with Andrew Denton. Crackerjack was sold to Fremantle Media in 2003, with Mark taking the reins as CEO and his brother Carl COO. They quickly built a slate of 19 different productions including the very new Australian Idol, Australia’s Got Talent, Newstopia, The Farmer Wants a Wife, The Apprentice, Project Runway, Choir of Hard Knocks, The Biggest Loser and MasterChef. In 2010 Mark & Carl left Fremantle to head up the local affiliate of the Shine Group launched by Elisabeth Murdoch. What followed was a blitzkrieg of TV content with an extraordinary slate tv franchises and super brands including Beauty & The Geek, The Bachelor, Shark Tank and The Voice. During this same period they launched highly successful Dramas including INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, Catching Milat and Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door . Within just 3 years Shine was the No. 1 production company the Southern hemisphere. Following a global merger, Mark and Carl Fennessy agreed to oversee a new company Endemol Shine Australia. What followed is another incredible output of content and hits including: Lambs of God, Mystify, Australian Survivor, Offspring, The Beautiful Lie, Wake in Fright, Gogglebox, Australian Ninja Warrior, Married At First Sight, Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds, Blue Murder - Killer Cop. In 2017 Mark was awarded an Order of Australia, recognising him for his significant service to the broadcast industry. He was recently ranked No 1 in the Australian Financial Review’s Cultural List. The brothers Fennessy recently departed Shine after almost 11 years and whilst the world waits to see what these industry trailblazers might do next, Mark is overseeing the highly anticipated scripted series Last King of The X. He also runs a small independent record label in keeping with his passionate and longstanding relationship with the music business. Mark has a relentlessly creative mind, always ticking over with new ideas and possibilities. Combine that with his fierce work ethic and ability to articulate his vision, well, it’s kind of epic! He is a very private family man and this is a rare opportunity to see what makes a man like this tick. More money equals more happiness...right??
It's the 30th episode of The Album Concept Hour! In order to commemorate it correctly, we're doing an episode about 30 Seconds to Mar's 3rd album, "This Is War." Coming off the heels of their successful sophomore release "A Beautiful Lie," which pulled people in with it's high-budget music videos/short films, brothers/bandmates Shannon and Jared Leto were poised to make another hit record. Jared Leto had reached huge success in his acting career and now he had reached that in his music career. To put it bluntly, this symmetrically-faced, actor/rock star/heart-throb was worth a lot of money. In 2008, 30 Seconds to Mars was trying pivot away from Virgin Records, who had acquired the label they originally signed to, Immortal Records. EMI (who owned Virgin Records) was pissed about possibly losing such a big asset and, seeing a chance to make some quick cash, attempted to sue the band for only completing 2 of the 5 albums they felt they were owed. However, Jared Leto pointed out that in California, contracts can't legally bind you more than 7 years and they were on their 9th year. Although they ultimately declared their contract null and void, they did end up staying with EMI for "This Is War," putting their differences aside. They have made peace, but the album they released is about the personal war they went through in the legal system during that time and is a big shift in their sound. Join Brad, Scott, Dave, and Jon as they try to discover what the war is all about. Wtf have we been? A Resident Evil Review Is coming? Where's the lie in the episode? Find out on the next episode of Dragon Ball Z!!!
What makes Cheer on Netflix so compelling? We react to Cheer and its look into the cheerleading subculture of the U.S., and discuss some of the controversy around the series. Next up is A Beautiful Lie, available on the CBC Gem App here in Canada. This series is a modern take on Anna Karenina, one of the foremost novels in history. We also wonder why Australian series don't get as much love as they should here in North America. Lastly, the 90s film The Player. It's aged badly, but is it still interesting? Welcome! Jesse and Chris here today, and, as expected Jesse managed to spend an entire episode talking about the Snyder cut of the Justice League movie. Enjoy!
I talk with the great Chris Jones, the writer and producer of the forthcoming Netflix series "Away," about his profile of the magician Teller. Chris is a two-time National Magazine Award winner and his story on Teller is his all-time favorite, the one he keeps returning to and thinking about, even seven years after Esquire published it. It's about magic and storytelling but mostly the eternal fight between what the brain knows and the heart wants. In our time together, Chris and I discuss a lot of books and magic tricks and videos. In the final installment of this year's Music Mayhem, the crew let's fate decide on which album they'll be listening to. We wanted to end Music Mayhem with something out of the ordinary, so we came up with the Wheel of Mayhem. It's a very basic spin-wheel/wheel of fortune contest. Each of us chose two albums, one good album, one bad album, we threw the titles up on the wheel, and we gave it a spin. We want to shroud the episode in as much mystery as possible, so if you want to know what we end up listening to, you'll just have to press play! We hope everyone enjoyed this year's epic edition of Music Mayhem. We all had a blast and hope that next year will be even bigger, bolder, and mayhemm-y. The church auditorium was full of friends and relatives that had come to pay respects and to comfort the grieving family. A dear lady had died of an illness that was unresponsive to treatment. She was beloved mother and grandmother as well as a staunch supporter of her husband in a successful family business. She was not young, but not old either and her loss was keenly felt by all who knew her. Full text here: http://www.tomorrowsworld.org/commentary/a-beautiful-lie

Alice's first screenplay, Suburban Mayhem, went to the Cannes film festival she hasn't looked back from there. She was noticed by prolific TV Producer John Edwards and has worked for him ever since. Actor and writer Jonathan Gavin (OFFSPRING, PUBERTY BLUES) has written for some of Australia’s most loved and most acclaimed TV shows. His latest offering is THE BEAUTIFUL LIE, a contemporary reimagining of ANNA KARENINA for the ABC. He talks us through the inevitable trade offs made when it comes to modernising a classic. He shares what it’s is like to work with the powerhouse partnership of John Edwards and Imogen Banks, dealing with schedule clashes and the fear of being 'found out’. We also discuss how each show he has worked on is a reflection of the particular personalities involved. And the essential truth that if the writers' room doesn’t work, invariably the show won’t get made!
On this week's podcast we discuss the new Aussie film The Dressmaker, starring dream babes Kate Winslet and Liam Hemsworth. Then we watch the six part ABC drama and Anna Karenina adaptation The Beautiful Lie. And finally we listen to actress Sophie Lowe's new single Pink Flowers.
