Matthew Dicks is an internationally bestselling novelist, a storytelling champion, and the author of 2 non-fiction books that had a big influence on me. One is Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life through the Power of Storytelling -- a book that inspired me to start this very podcast in 2021. The other one is Someday Is Today: 22 Simple Actionable Ways to Propel Your Creative Life -- a book that turned me into a more confident and productive creator. I admire Matt. He's a kind man who's dedicated his life to creating, teaching, writing, and connecting with others through stories (check out his YouTube channel below). I invited him to discuss storytelling, creativity, the art of writing, and other things that writers and creatives may find interesting and useful. Enjoy! In order to excel in his professional life, as well as do what he loves in his personal life, he's developed a set of strategies that help him be more creative and productive, and can be used by anyone who wants to start making the most of life.Matt writes about these tactics and mindset shifts in his latest book Someday Is Today: 22 Simple, Actionable Ways to Propel Your Creative Life, and he shares some of them with us today on the show, including why you need to think in minutes, be an eagle rather than a mouse, practice deliberate incuriosity, and always do your best to act like a decent human being. Along the way, Matt and I talk about why you should floss in the shower and how restaurants that make guacamole at your table are a great example of the folly of making a thing, a thing.Resources Related to the PodcastMatt's previous appearance on the AoM Podcast: Episode #462 — How to Tell Better StoriesAoM Article: The 7 Habits — Begin With the End in MindMatthew telling the story of how he was robbed AoM Article: Possibilities in Spare MomentsConnect With Matthew DicksMatthew's Website

Matthew Dicks wears a lot of hats. Among other things, he's a storyteller, communications consultant, writer, and schoolteacher. As artists, you're likely great with painting a story on canvas, in watercolor, through music or whatever medium you play in, but storytelling is a wonderful skill we can all benefit from improving. Telling stories well is art, and it's something that each and every one of us can do easily every day.  Matthew Dicks is an international best seller with awards for being a nationally recognized storyteller. He joined us in Episode 203 and discussed his latest book, Someday Is Today, which I highly recommend checking out!   In this two-part series, we're continuing the conversation around his other book, Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life through the Power of Storytelling. So now we're diving into what the art of storytelling looks like for the average person who doesn't identify as a storyteller.  Noteworthy points with master storyteller, Matthew Dicks:  Why story worthy moments on the most boring days are precious commodities  How Homework for Life makes you look at your days in a meaningful way  What Crash and Burn style writing is and how you can get started (right now!)  4 strategies for dealing with negative people and why an enemy list is a superpower Live a better life with more ‘Yes' and get remarkable results  “Most of the time, we allow our memories to be tossed away like trash, when they are our most precious commodities.”  -Matthew Dicks  Matthew Dicks is the co-founder and artistic director of Speak Up, a storytelling organization that produces shows in New England. In addition to being an internationally bestselling author of multiple fiction and non-fiction books, he is also a 56-time Moth StorySLAM champion and 9-time GrandSLAM champion. The most important thing for you to learn today is that, given all the accolades Matthew has, his best advice for being a better storyteller is to simply become a better listener.   “Be the last person to speak in every room you enter, and I think you'll find it's really helpful in terms of just being a better communicator and a better person.” -Matthew Dicks  Connect with Matthew Dicks:  Website  Twitter   Interested in applying for the Artist Incubator Program's Masterclass Track? "Life is not lost by dying; life is lost minute by minute, day by dragging day, in all the thousand, small, uncaring ways." --Stephen Vincent Benet I've always been the kind of person who wants to limit mindless, activities that keep me as a consumer, on the sidelines, a watcher. I prefer to live a more active and creative life. I feel good about the day when I've contributed to the world--whether by weeding my garden, walking the dos, writing a blog entry, or coaching a client. Today I'm talking with Matthew Dicks. Matt is a bestselling novelist, nationally recognized storyteller, playwright, communications consultant, award-winning elementary schoolteacher, humor and advice columnist, minister, wedding DJ, and professional public speaker. He has won bucket-loads of Moth GrandSLAM story competitions and, together with his wife, Elysha Dicks, created the organization Speak Up to help others share their stories. Earlier this month, his latest book, the inspirational and practical "Someday is TODAY was published! In this interview, we talk about the book and the concepts he lays out to help us move forward in our creative lives. A few of the concepts we cover are..."Homework for Life", "Your 100-year-old Self", and getting better by making terrible things. When asked about his legacy, Matt believes that "Hardwork will overcome talent every time." You can get more Matthew Dicks, his storytelling, and his inspiration...
