In 1980, Queen was on top of the world. Their eighth album The Game went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "Another One Bites the Dust" topped the Hot 100. At the time, late director Saul Swimmer approached the band about making a possible concert film. When Queen performed at the Montreal Forum in Canada in 1981 on November 24 and 25, Swimmer captured the band in all their essence for Queen Rock Montreal. Originally released in 1981, the film has been digitally remastered for the first time for IMAX and will run for a limited time from January 18 through 21. The film showcases Queen at their apex with Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon performing through a ferocious 26-song setlist featuring "We Will Rock You," "Somebody To Love," and the live debut of "Under Pressure," along with "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Are The Champions," and many more. In 2007, nearly 30 years since the concert film premiered, the live album recording from the Montreal Forum dates, Queen Rock Montreal, was also released. In the late 1970s, Walt "Wally" Versen was recruited along with five of his fellow football players from Northwestern College to work as the band's security on their tour. "For the six of us, an already extraordinary journey took an unbelievable veer into the world of biggest-time rock and roll," said Verson, who has remained friends with Brian May and is executive producing the upcoming documentary Play the Game: A Jock N Roll Story. The security guard was also at the Montreal concert in '81 and captured never-before-seen images of the band from his point of view backstage. Versen also played into Mercury's stage theatrics. Mercury would oftentimes come on stage on the shoulders of security guards dressed as Superman and other characters in costume. Dressed as Darth Vader, Versen once carried Mercury out on his shoulders.

Freddie's flash of genius "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" really did materialize in five or ten minutes, and it further proves Queen's ability to play anything with ease. It was the first song recorded for The Game, and by Roger's account, one of the easiest to knock out. Brian may have (politely) protested the use of a Telecaster in this song, but he knew how important it was to capture that style. John performs fun boogie woogie bass. But this is all Freddie, on acoustic guitar(!) and crooning perfection at us. Do you like the band Queen?    I do:  For good or bad, they maximized the potential of the modern recording studio with repeated vocal passes until the magnetic tape was almost transparent, pushing the envelope literally to the breaking point. They never EVER limited themselves to one style. One need only listen to the first four tracks of “A Night at the Opera”. From almost prog changes in “Death on Two Legs” to the underrated, brave, funny, and effortless whimsy of “Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon” to Roger Taylor’s best Queen song, “I’m In Love With My Car” to the light, breezy but taut pop masterpiece “You’re My Best Friend”. I didn’t even mention what would come on Side Two.  No Band Rocked Harder. Go back and listen to “Tie Your Mother Down” or “Killer Queen” (my first Queen record) and they effortlessly mastered style after style. And surprisingly, in the time of Glam, they weren’t Glam. Sure, they looked it. But looks were part of the contradiction.  Freddie Mercury never took himself too seriously. We all knew he was gay, but we didn’t care. In 1975, Elton John was flamboyant, but Freddie was gay. And the reason it never hurt him was because he didn’t care, at all, about what we thought of that. Think about how many gay pop singers had come out before that. Besides John Lennon, I mean.  Hits, hits, more hits. All styles. You just never knew what was going to come out of that radio. Every member wrote and every member wrote hits (in England, anyhow). And those hits were big, never cheap, never gimmicky.  They had a joy and a sense of daring that no one since The Beatles had tried. I cannot emphasise enough how many chances they took. Some, like “Mustapha”, didn’t land, but some most assuredly did.  I will also add that no member released anything remotely approaching solo success or artistic transcendance. I think this speaks to an overall undefinable chemistry. For a band, this is a GOOD THING.  I don’t:  Queen had the pretension to put the words, “No synths!” in their liner notes. Isn’t multi-tracking guitars until you gag pretty much the same thing? And making your vocal arrangements dense and multi-tracked to the point of sounding like a chorale, to me, was the same cheat.  I said no band rocked harder. But they were severely limited by their drummer. They couldn’t swing. Cheap Trick, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles...they could swing. I never heard a Hammond organ on a Queen record or soul of any kind. Or real emotion except for rage, lust, and occasional whimsy. There was nothing...whiter...than a Queen album.  Roger Taylor should not have been allowed to put his own songs on Queen albums. Those songs were all pretty much dreck, sounding like the opposite of the good things about Queen. They sounded like studio jam sessions. I never liked a single one. His boring solo records bear this out.  Queen is the bonafide best example of “live album as placeholder”. By no means were they the only ones. But if you’re the hottest band in the world (and would continue your run) why break your momentum with one of the worst, most lifeless live albums of the ‘70? It could only be as a money grab. This is a theme with Queen. In fact, by the end, Queen, like Journey, became a money-making Queen tribute band. I HATED HATED HATED that movie. We’ll never truly know how it went down since Roger Taylor and Brian May had control of the way the story was told. But as an amateur movie critic, I would have really liked a bio that discussed the band less and just focused on Freddie’s amazing life, warts and all. That IS the remaining member’s fault. Reinventing the history, even of a band, does a disservice to Freddie Mercury. I think by now we can handle the dissonance and contradictions. “The Game”, from 1980 was their only #1 album in the US. None of their subsequent albums reached even the Top 20. Sales don’t necessarily reflect quality, but I can assure you, young reader, in this case, the dearth of subsequent sales tells the story. Queen was decidedly on the downswing in America. Queen had 2 #1 songs in the US. Both from “The Game”. And “The Game” was their sole #1 album on Billboard. Ironically, it was the first album on which they DID use synths. “Another One Bites The Dust” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” were both departures. Almost parodies of styles derived from Black music.  This podcast is all Queen but very little...QUEEN. Every member is represented (including Paul Rodgers, but only one Bad Company song) but like I said, Queen was an unidentifiable mix of talents, and not only that, their chemistry was never duplicated...by them, anyhow. Queen’s trajectory was closer to The Doors than The Beatles in that every one of their albums had some pretty bad songs to go with the ringers.  I saw them for the “Jazz” tour, Buffalo, NY. 1979. They were ok.  So...I like Queen. For their constant bravery, which cannot be faked. For their daring use of harmony. For their very underrated bassist John Deacon. And because, like The Doors, those singles were like nothing before or since. Who would dare?  Man Friday & Jive Junior - Picking Up Sounds (1983) Man Friday is a former member of Funkapolitan who did this one 45 with John Deacon, which was produced by Wham! guitarist Robert Ahwai. Queen - Fun It (1979) A precursor to "Another One Bites The Dust", no? Freddie Mercury - In My Defence (1986) From Wikipedia: Dave Clark...wrote a science fiction stage musical, Time, which debuted in 1986. It played for two years in London's West End, starring Cliff Richard (replaced later by David Cassidy). The musical also launched a concept album called Time which featured Richard, Freddie Mercury, Leo Sayer, Stevie Wonder, and Dionne Warwick. Two million copies were sold and it spun off several hit singles. In the UK. Not so much in the US. Hoy vamos a repasar la vida y milagros de uno de los mejores grupos de la historia del rock: THE QUEEN. Para ello contaremos con la colaboración de dos periodistas de prestigio: Miguel Ángel Bargueño y Carlos Marcos que hace unos días publicaron un artículo en el periódico El País en el que, a través de 12 de las mejores canciones de este grupo, recorrían la trayectoria musical de esta fantástica banda. Así que, y apoyándonos en ese trabajo, empezamos con el número 12 de esta lista: Another One Bites the Dust, de 1980 e incluida en el disco “The Game” La línea de bajo resulta tan adherente como un buen estribillo. Y es una apuesta segura para poner patas arriba una discoteca. El bajo de John Deacon, autor del tema, es el protagonista absoluto del 'single' más vendido de la historia de Queen (fue número uno de ventas en Estados Unidos y en casi todo el mundo). Como buen bajista, flipaba con el funk y la música disco, y con esos mimbres, creó esta base rítmica prodigiosa. Mocedades (sí, Mocedades) grabó en 1981 una notable versión ('Amar a alguien'); parece que para conseguir el permiso de Mercury un representante de la discográfica tocó el timbre de su casa de Londres y le puso 'Eres tú', tras lo cual accedió. Y ya estamos en el número dos: I Want to Break Free de 1984 e incluida en el disco ‘The Works’ Si Queen vivieron una segunda edad dorada en los ochenta fue por temas como este. Aunque la mayor parte del repertorio de Queen nació de la pluma de Freddie Mercury, el bajista John Deacon escribió unos cuantos temas, de los que este y 'Another one bites the dust' son los más logrados y famosos. No está claro qué llevó a Freddie Mercury a escribir este drama sobre un hombre que confiesa a su madre que ha cometido un asesinato y se prepara para ir al infierno. Algunos biógrafos apuntan a que se trata de una metáfora sobre la ruptura de Mercury con su pasado (hasta poco antes había estado saliendo con una chica, Mary Austin) y la aceptación de su homosexualidad. El autor nunca lo aclaró y prefirió alimentar la incógnita. Las múltiples capas de voces supusieron un reto para la tecnología de la época, que se resolvió poniendo a Mercury, May y Taylor a grabar los coros durante jornadas enteras; luego el productor Roy Thomas Baker duplicó docenas de cintas. Pese a que la discográfica no lo veía claro por su duración (casi seis minutos), se publicó como 'single' y fue un gran éxito: número uno durante nueve semanas seguidas en el Reino Unido. Aunque ya se habían rodado vídeos musicales anteriormente, el de esta canción es uno de los primeros en constituir una obra de arte en sí mismo. Today is the 14th day of competition at the 23rd Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. Here are a few things you might not have known about these Olympics and the Olympic Winter Games in general. Ninety-two nations are competing in 102 events in 15 sports during the 19-day competition. The host South Koreans marched with their counterparts from North Korea under a unified Korean flag during the opening ceremony. The two countries combined to field a unified women’s ice hockey team, but otherwise participated separately. This is the third time the Winter Olympics have been held in East Asia, and the first of those to be held outside of Japan. Japan hosted the 1972 Winter Games in Sapporo and the 1998 games in Nagano. It’s the second time South Korea has hosted an Olympics, the first was the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul. It’s the first of three consecutive Olympics that will be held in Asia, with the 2020 Summer games scheduled for Tokyo and the 2022 Winter Olympics set for Beijing, which will become the first city to host the Summer and Winter Olympics. 2,914 athletes are competing, with 1,672 men and 1,242 women qualified. Six countries are making their Winter Olympics debut: Ecuador, Eritrea, Kosovo, Malaysia, Nigeria and Singapore. Ecuador, Eritrea, Kosovo and Singapore have each sent one athlete, while Malaysia has sent two and Nigeria has sent three. One country not officially represented is Russia, which was suspended following a doping controversy at the 2014 Olympics. Select Russian athletes are being allowed to compete under the Olympic Flag as Olympic Athletes from Russia. Our question: This was not the first time North and South Korea marched together during the opening ceremony. What other years, and in what cities did the Koreans march as one?
